Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can also help us manage bad feelings.
“Referring to (指代) yourself in the third person leads people to think about themselves more.
19 ” said Jason Moser, a professor from Michigan State University, US. This can help us see
things in a different way, especially when we’re feeling sad or angry.

Huang Xuhua, an outstanding Chinese scientist, is widely known as the “Father of China’s
Nuclear Submarines” (核潜艇). He was born on March 12, 1926, in Guangdong. In his early years,
China was in a mess. Japanese planes often made attacks on Chinese cities. From then on, he
made up his mind to study shipbuilding, believing that it was the key to making China stronger.
Building China’s first nuclear submarine was a highly secret project. For more than 30
years, Huang Xuhua was kept away from his family. Whenever he thought of his family, a strong
feeling of guilt (愧疚) would hit him, but his sense of duty to the country always won out.
The working environment was not good at all. Without modern computers, Huang and his
team had to use simple abacuses to do difficult figuring (计算). However, their hard work finally
produced fruits. In 1970, China’s first nuclear attack submarine, Long March No.1, was ready for
sea tests and entered service (服务) in 1974, making China the fifth country in the world to own
this powerful weapon (武器).
In 1988, at the age of 62, he still went to the research center often, hoped to pass on his
knowledge and experience to the young people. His story is a powerful reminder that we should
always run after our dreams and give our time and energy to our country, no matter how many
difficulties lie ahead.
