2025 promises to be another year for great art exhibitions. From 15th-century Italy to new works by living artists, there is something for everyone. We round up Turner and Constable from Tate Britain, which is the UK’s national gallery of British art from 1500 to the present day.
Plenty of artists who have big anniversaries (周年纪念日) in 2025 are not getting exhibitions. Jean Francois Millet might have been expected to get better recognition than the small show at the National Gallery with Life on the Land (August 7 — October 19, 2025). Robert Rauschenberg will have a collection of exhibitions in 2025 across the globe. Tate Britain will give J. M. W. Turner major birthday honors on November 27, 2025: a joint (共同的) show with John Constable which runs until April 12, 2026 (the latter’s anniversary).
Chalk and cheese painters and personalities, the two men had very different but equally influential landscape styles. This is being described as “the definitive exhibition”, a combination of the artists’ personal stories, with added details from sketchbooks and artifacts, running alongside a context of industrialization, urbanization, and changing views of landscape. On one hand, Turner was driven by his love of travel, drama, and narrative, on the other, Constable was characterized by his careful observation and homesickness, but above all both loved nature and sought the best means they could to represent it.
This is billed as the heavyweight battle of the year but these artists complement (补充) each other. However you like your landscape, you will find it here.

Pablo Guerrero has spent his life exploring the cacti (仙人掌) in the Atacama Desert. He first saw them during a family trip along Chile’s coast and soon fell in love with the strange shapes and bright flowers of the cacti. Later, as a researcher, he studied the impacts of climate change and human activities, like illegal poaching (偷盗), on these special plants.
Guerrero began visiting the Atacama as a researcher in the early 2000s and observed the plants that he had admired as a child. Their ability to live in such tough conditions impressed him. However, he grew concerned as human activities might make it even harder for the species to continue to survive.
The cacti in the Atacama are particularly subject to changes in their habitat. Many species live in very small areas, sometimes just a few square kilometers. And in the driest reaches of the desert, the cacti depend on fog alone for water. But the desert is getting hotter and drier, and in some places, the fog is disappearing.
At the same time, mining and energy projects have led to more roads, making the fragile (脆弱的) environment more accessible. This change has brought more litter and broken-down cactus remains along the roadsides. These remains do not disappear quickly, making the desert look even more lifeless.
Recently, Guerrero learned that many cacti are being stolen at the Chilean border. As people around the world grow interested in having cacti as houseplants, theft has increased, which has put the species in danger, along with climate change.
Determined to help save the Atacama’s cacti, Guerrero has been exploring how the cacti survive in such a terrible environment and working with local and international groups to stop poaching. He believes that setting up protected areas and training park rangers are the game changer.
4. How did the family trip to Chile influence Guerrero
A. He was attracted to the cacti.
B. He planted bright flowers at home.
C. He fell in love with the country.
D. He started to explore strange shapes.
5. Why did Guerrero grow concerned when visiting the Atacama in the early 2000s
A. It was hard for people to live there.
B. The villagers suffered from heavy rain.
C. The cacti there faced greater risks.
D. Numerous visitors flooded into the area.
6. What can we know about mining and energy projects in the Atacama
A. They create lots of well-paid jobs.
B. They bring the desert back to life.
C. They save the fragile environment.
D. They threaten the local ecosystem.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The necessity of training park rangers.
B. Guerrero’s efforts to protect the cacti.
C. The pilot national park in the Atacama.
D. Guerrero’s hopes for the local groups.

Characteristics, such as ability to follow gestures (手势) and reaction to unsolvable tasks in 3- to 7-month-old dogs, were related to desirable behaviors in those puppies (幼犬) in adulthood, researchers report in the May Applied Animal Behaviour Science. These findings could help pet owners determine the best way to train their dogs and what kinds of activities the animals may enjoy as they age.
Katriina Tiira and her team at the University of Helsinki invited pet owners, show-dog handlers and working-dog trainers to bring their dogs for cognition (认知) tests designed to show how dogs think and learn.
227 dogs between the ages of 3 months and 7 months were directed to do things like follow gestures pointing at a bowl with treats, attempt unsolvable tasks or access treats placed in a clear box with an opening in the back. 99 of those dogs repeated the tests as adults, between ages 1 and 8. Many characteristics remained almost the same from puppyhood to adulthood, the team found, especially in dogs that were tested at 6 months or 7 months old.
Researchers then surveyed some owners about their now-adult animals’ behavior and trainability, and compared that data with dog test results for 227 dogs. The surveys showed that dogs who quickly learned to follow gestures became more trainable as adults. Puppies that showed fear when meeting a stranger often remained shy around new people.
These findings offer a clear way to match training and activities to each dog’s natural strengths, helping every dog grow into a happy, well-adjusted adult. For example, Tiira suggests that dogs that tend to stay away from strangers might have lower self-confidence. “What I would do with these kinds of dogs is that I would give them a lot of experiences and feelings of success in all training,” she says, adding that encouraging them — as long as they are well-behaved — and creating positive experiences in new situations might help as well.
8. What did the researchers find in their study
A. How a dog follows gestures in a strange environment.
B. When pet owners should correct their dogs’ mistakes.
C. How a puppy’s thinking ability affects its adult behaviors.
D. When working-dog trainers start to test a dog’s response.
9. What were the dogs directed to do in the experiments
A. Perform some tasks with treats.
B. Place a bowl next to a clear box.
C. Share food with other animals.
D. Remain on the floor for some time.
10. Why did the researchers survey some pet owners
A. To discover a treatment for animal diseases.
B. To praise these owners for their achievement.
C. To seek advice from these owners on raising pets.
D. To match test scores with behaviors of adult dogs
11. What can we infer about the findings from the last paragraph
A. They help pet owners live a peaceful life.
B. They can form the basis of how to train the dogs.
C. They find the strengths of all the pet dogs.
D. They show different dogs have similar characters.

Mars once had a thick, warm air rich in carbon dioxide (CO2), but that carbon has been trapped in its rocks for thousands of years. That’s the story shown by a hidden secret of carbon-bearing minerals unearthed by NASA’s Curiosity rover (探测器) along its route up a Martian mountain. This finding gives us the first clear proof of a carbon cycle on Mars, and shows why the planet’s life-friendly climate disappeared.
Long ago, Mars had abundant water and a warm climate, supported by a thick CO2 atmosphere. But today, the planet is a cold, dry desert with almost no atmosphere. Scientists long wondered where all that CO2 went. Geochemist Benjamin Tutolo and his team thought it must be locked in carbonate (碳酸盐) minerals, but previous searches hadn’t found enough to explain the loss.
In 2022 and 2023, Curiosity drove across a region where the rocks change from soft, wet clay — marking the great drying of Mars. The rover drilled four samples (样品) from different rocks and used its onboard lab to study them. The research team identified siderite, a carbonate mineral that forms when water, rock and heat interact and then dry out. Each sample held between 5 and 10 percent siderite by weight-much more than expected. “We found it here, for the first time,” Tutolo said, “That’s the main point that makes this cool here. This discovery brings us much closer to solving the carbon mystery.”
This work provides a great explanation for how Mars could once support rivers and lakes, yet later lost its warm air. Looking ahead, scientists hope to match orbital data with ground findings and, finally, return samples to Earth for further research. In the meantime, Curiosity’s discovery shines a bright new light on Mars’ change from a habitable world to the dry desert we see today.
12. Where is the carbon that once kept Mars warm according to the text
A. It has been locked in Mars’ rocks.
B. It has escaped into the atmosphere.
C. It is trapped in the lakes and rivers.
D. It is drawn by a sea of burning sands.
13. Which best explains the underlined word “abundant” in paragraph 2
A. Salty. B. Dirty.
C. Plentiful. D. Drinkable.
14. How did Tutolo feel about the discovery
A. Worried. B. Excited.
C. Doubtful. D. Regretful.
15. What can be learned about the discovery
A. It mismatches these ground findings.
B It accounts for climate change on our planet.
C. It brings us closer to solving energy problems.
D. It might explain why Mars lost its habitable climate.

How to Be a Better Active Listener
Part of knowing how to communicate better is learning how to listen better. People often praise active listening, but many don’t know how to put it into practice. One of the main challenges to active listening is the preoccupation(思虑)with a response. ____16____ . To break this habit, which is not really in service of the speaker, consider the following steps.
Rethink how to add value. You may think that adding value to an exchange is mostly about what you say. ___17___ . Most of us value responses that help us think through our own ideas. We often don’t need a listener to impress us with their words. Instead, we value most how they help us sharpen our thoughts.
Paraphrase(转述)without judgment. ____18____ . Instead of aiming to add your own thoughts, task yourself with giving a summary that withholds your opinion or judgment. In other words, aim to briefly explain what speakers mean in your own words.
____19____ . The next step from paraphrasing is to ask questions that move the needle. Much like the way a coach listens, these questions push speakers to go deeper into their own thinking, or consider possible concerns, which is a true gift to a speaker and helps you stay focused on listening.
Interrupt(打断)politely. Active listening isn’t a mindless engagement, and not all interruption is rude. Sometimes speakers get lost in their speech, providing depths of detail you don’t need. ____20____ .
A. Be open to various understandings
B. Ask questions that help speakers think
C. But that is not always how others understand it
D. If you are eager to reply, change how you respond
E. In this case, interruption can help them stay on the topic
F. These are the problems that speakers commonly face in a speech
G. When focusing too much on a perfect reply, you can’t pay full attention

One morning, I sat in the back of the classroom, feeling nervous and restless. I had always been shy and hated being in the spotlight. I rarely participated in activities or spoke in class. That day, however, our teacher announced we would have a class assembly (集会) next week, and each class needed to select a student to give a short speech about the importance of honesty.
The room fell silent as my classmates looked at each other nervously. The teacher asked, “Who would like to volunteer ” She looked directly at me and I shook my head, hoping not to be chosen. But she smiled and pointed, saying, “You, Richard.” My heart raced. I wanted to say no, but I could feel everyone’s eyes on me. My face turned red and my hands were shaking, but I accepted the challenge.
After school, I still could not believe it. I rehearsed (排练) giving a speech on honesty in the empty classroom. Fear and excitement mixed inside me as I imagined all the students waiting for me. I knew it was a big challenge, but a small voice inside told me it could be a chance to change something.
The next morning, I bought a notebook and started writing the speech. I rehearsed each line in front of a mirror. My voice quivered (颤抖) at first, but slowly I gained courage. I wrote and rewrote the speech, remembering how honesty had helped me before. It felt strange but comforting to watch myself speak.
On the morning of the assembly, my knees shook backstage as I waited for my turn. Finally, the moment came and I walked up to the stage with sweaty hands but determined eyes. I took a deep breath and stepped forward. My heart was racing as I prepared to speak.

【答案】
The audience was completely silent as I spoke the first sentence. My voice, initially weak and trembling, gradually grew stronger as I continued. I shared personal stories about honesty, how it had guided me through difficult times and taught me valuable lessons. With each word, I felt more confident, as if a new strength was flowing through me. The silence in the room was replaced by focused attention, and I could see some of my classmates nodding in agreement. I realized that I wasn’t just speaking; I was connecting with them, sharing something meaningful. The fear that had gripped me earlier faded away, replaced by a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
When I finished the speech, all my classmates stood up and cheered. The applause was thunderous, and I was overwhelmed with a mix of relief and joy. My teacher walked up to me with a big smile, patting me on the back and saying, “Well done, Richard! You really nailed it!” My classmates surrounded me, offering congratulations and words of encouragement. I felt a warmth in my heart that I had never experienced before. That day, I not only delivered a speech but also overcame my shyness and gained newfound confidence. I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone could lead to amazing experiences and personal growth. From then on, I became more active in class and participated in various activities, no longer afraid of being in the spotlight.
