Ernest Miller Hemingway was a famous American writer born on July 21, 1899, near Chicago. His father
was a doctor who loved to take him fishing and hunting. This is where Hemingway developed a love for nature
and the outdoors. When World War I started, Hemingway wanted to join the army. However, because his eyesight
was not very good, he became an ambulance driver in Italy. During the war, he was hurt while helping others, and
this experience played a role on his writing later on.
After the war, Hemingway moved to Paris, where he met many other writers and artists. He became part of a
group known as the “Lost Generation,” which included many young people who felt confused and lost after the
war. Hemingway’s writing style was special; he used short sentences and simple words that were full of feelings.
His first novel, The Sun Also Rises, was published in 1926 and told the story of young people trying to find
meaning in life after the war. In 1929, he wrote A Farewell to Arms, a sad love story set during World War I that
showed how cruel(残酷的) war could be and how powerful love is.
In the 1930s, Hemingway traveled to Africa for a big game hunt, and he later reported on the Spanish Civil
War(西班牙内战). These experiences helped him write the book For Whom the Bell Tolls, published in 1940. His
most famous work, The Old Man and the Sea, was published in 1952. It tells the story of an old fisherman named
Santiago who fights to catch a huge fish. This book won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in
Literature(诺贝尔文学奖) one year later.
Even though Hemingway had a lot of success, he faced many personal problems, including health problems
and trouble in his mind. He died on July 2, 1961, but his stories continue to encourage readers around the world.
His works often teach important lessons about courage and resilience(坚持), making them valuable for both young
and older readers. Hemingway’s ability to capture(捕捉) the human experience in simple yet powerful words has
made his books timeless classics.

Xiaoman
by Ouyang Xiu
A nightingale sings in the willow green,
Shining a bright moon in vast horizon.
My favorite wheat buds on field ridges,
Beaming at faded flowers in the wind.
— Xu Yuanchong’s translation Xiaoman
This 900-year-old poem opens the story of Xiaoman (Grain Buds), the 8th solar term(节气) (May 20–22). Its
name means “small fullness” — wheat grains are growing but not yet ready, a symbol of growth and hope in
Chinese culture.
Nature’s Three Signs of Xiaoman
During Xiaoman, nature shows three clear changes:
Bitter herbs(苦菜) grow everywhere. In ancient times, people ate them to stay healthy in the hot summer.
Soft grasses wither under the sun. This makes space for stronger plants.
Wheat(小麦) turns golden. Farmers start to prepare for harvest(丰收), singing folk songs in the fields.
Old Traditions
Long ago, Xiaoman was a busy time for traditions:
Praying for silkworms: In south of the Yangtze River, people lit candles to thank silkworm gods for good
cocoons(茧).
The “Water Snatching( 抢 )” ceremony: Farmers in Zhejiang used waterwheels together to water fields,
shouting and laughing as they worked.
Eating bitter(苦) vegetables: Families served dandelion salad dishes to teach kids that life is not only sweet
but also bitter.
Xiaoman Today
Now, Xiaoman reminds us to slow down. In cities, some people:
Plant small gardens on balconies, growing wheat or sunflowers to watch “small fullness” happen.
Join “solar term clubs” at school, where they read poems like Ouyang Xiu’s and make wheat-themed art.
Cook simple meals with seasonal foods, like fresh vegetable salads or wheat noodles, to feel connected to
nature.

Xiaoman isn’t just about crops. It teaches us that happiness is in small steps. Just like the wheat in the poem,
we don’t need to be “perfect” to be happy. Being proud of our growth — like getting a good grade or making a
new friend — is what matters.
So next time you see willows swaying(柳树摇曳) or hear a bird sing, think of Xiaoman. It’s a reminder that
every “small fullness” in life is worth celebrating.
52. How does the writer start the story of Xiaoman
A. By describing a modern festival activity. B. By sharing an old poem about Xiaoman.
C. By listing farmers’ daily work in Zhejiang. D. By teaching readers to plant wheat at home.
53. What does the underlined word “wither” mean
A. grow strongly B. become dry and die C. move beautifully D. move with the wind
54. What do the silkworm prayer and water ceremony have in common
A. Both use firecrackers for good luck. B. Both happen during the harvest time.
C. Both teach kids to eat bitter foods. D. Both are about working with nature.
55. What does the writer want us to learn from “small fullness”
A. To never be happy with our life. B. To always be 100 percent perfect.
C. To stay away from hard work. D. To enjoy small growth and small steps.

Mary spent a whole week working in her garden. She pulled out thick weeds(杂 草 ) that covered the plants. The garden was her special kingdom, and every weed she took out felt like uncovering hidden magic. The sun
warmed her face, and the smell of fresh earth filled her with joy, making her feel light and happy.
During her breaks, she watched the gardener, careful not to disturb(打 搅 ) him. One morning, she surprised
him, and he laughed, saying she was like a playful robin(知更鸟) trying to impress another bird. The robin sang a
sweet song that filled the air with happiness.
Interested in flowers, Mary asked the gardener about his favorites. ▲ She loved her roses deeply,
treating them like her children. Although she had passed away, the roses continued to bloom bravely, keeping her
memory alive. Mary imagined how lovely the lady’s roses must have been.
Later, while wandering in the woods, Mary heard some soft music. Following the sound, she found a boy
named Dickon, playing music with a squirrel(松鼠) on his shoulder and a rabbit at his feet. He smiled warmly and
introduced himself, saying he had brought her gardening tools, like a knight(骑士) helping a princess.
At first, Mary wasn’t sure if she could trust him with her secret garden. But his kind eyes made her feel safe.
She decided to show him the hidden garden. When they entered, Dickon let out a surprised breath in amazement at
the wild beauty all around them.
Mary felt a warm excitement inside her, realizing that her garden was no longer just a secret. It was a promise
of life and adventure, ready to bloom( 开 花 ) with Dickon by her side. Together, they would take care of this
magical place, bringing it back to life and filling it with joy and color. With new hope, Mary knew that their
friendship would make the garden grow once again.
56. How long did Mary work in her garden at the beginning
A. One day B. Three days C. A whole week D. Two weeks

A. He told her stories about a lady who owned a beautiful rose garden.
B. The gardener explained that roses need special care and attention.
C. Mary asked him if he could teach her how to grow flowers.

59. What does the secret garden mainly mean for Mary

The 2025 Beijing Yizhuang Half Marathon and the world’s first human-robot half marathon happened on
April 19 in Beijing. The event had 21 teams of human-shaped robots, including famous companies like Yushu
Technology and UBTECH. This new competition got a lot of attention because it brought advanced(先进的)
technology and sports together.
The best part of the event was the “TianGong Ultra”, which finished the race in 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 42
seconds, winning first place. TianGong Ultra is about 1.8 meters tall and weighs 55 kilograms. This year, its speed
went from 6 km/h to a top speed of 12 km/h, because of a smart platform(平台) called “Hui Si Kai Wu.” This
smart platform lets the robot do many tasks more cleverly and quickly.
To get ready for the marathon, the team solved problems like staying steady(平稳), being light, and
controlling heat during long runs. They also made the robot’s movement control better to improve how it moves
and gets used to different roads. During the race, TianGong Ultra kept a speed of 7 to 8 km/h, showing its great
ability to keep going.
The half marathon course needed the robots to make about 250,000 joint movements, testing their balance(平
衡), heat control, and energy use. This race not only tested the robots but also helped developers find things to
make better. The competition wanted to show the robots’ abilities and encourage more new ideas in robot
technology.
Xiong Youjun, the head of the Beijing Human-like Robot Innovation Center, talked about the importance of
this competition for testing the robot’s skills in real situations. It helps make a way for future uses in factories and
daily life. He thinks this event is a big step for how humans and robots interact(交互), showing how robots can
live and work with humans.
In a word, this event was a big step forward in the development of human-shaped robots and what they can
do for human’s life. This marathon is just the start of a new time in robotics, where humans and robots work
together for a better future. The event has made people excited and curious about what the future of robots will
bring.

I was driving to my office for a meeting with an important new client( 客 户 ). Bo Chen, a Chinese culture
expert for the training, arrived early. His advice was very important for the day’s success. Confident and
knowledgeable, Chen was perfect for the job. I asked him to prepare business examples, and he gladly agreed.
My client arrived. Taking a deep breath, I began the introduction. As the morning went by, I explained each
part of the main problems, answered the questions, and carefully kept an eye on Chen so I could make sure his
advice was shared. But Chen didn’t seem to have any advice. After finishing the first part, I paused briefly and
looked to him for his advice, but he didn’t speak up. He didn’t open his mouth, move his body forward, or raise
his hand. Clearly, he had no example to provide. Not wanting to embarrass Chen or to create an uncomfortable
situation by asking him to speak when he was not ready, I simply continued with my next point. To my growing
disappointment(失 望 ), Chen remained silent. He nodded politely while I was speaking, but that was all; he used
no other body language to show any reactions, good or bad. I gave every example I could think of and continued
for three full hours. I felt helpless. I needed his advice for the program to succeed. Finally, I decided to take a
chance. “Bo,” I said with a smile, “please share some of your examples with us!” Then Chen sat up straight in his
chair, smiled confidently at the client, and opened up his notebook, which was filled with pages of notes. “Thank
you, Erin.” he replied. “All right.” And then, to my great comfort, Chen began to explain clear and amazing
examples one after another. The truth is that the story of Silent Bo is a story of culture, not personality. But it is
not as simple as you might think.

Classroom environments are very important for students’ learning experiences. A classroom that is too messy
or crowded can look untidy and make it hard for students to concentrate(集中注意力). When there are too many
things to look at, it can distract(使 分 心 ) students and hurt their ability to learn well. Therefore, teachers need to
think carefully about how they want their classroom to look.
Teachers need to think about materials on the walls to help reduce(减少) distractions. When there are too
many decorations(装饰) in the classroom, it can be too much for students to control their thoughts. Their brains
work hard to understand both pictures and words.
Sometimes, schools think that having lots of posters means they are doing a good job, but that is not always
true. Studies show that too much excitement can hurt students’ reading and writing skills, while a clean classroom
with few posters can help students with math learning. Students can play a role in their classroom decoration. It
builds a sense of belonging and personal ownership in their learning space.
Teachers can put up student work to show that they value their students. The colors in a classroom are also
very important. Bright colors like red and orange can make students feel anxious, while calming colors like blue
and green can help them focus better. Younger children usually like bright colors like yellow, but older students
often prefer softer shades of blue and green.
