二、阅读理解
Top Cookbooks of 2024The Wok: Recipes and Techniques by J. Kenji López-Alt
The Wok’s appeal is not innovation; you can find many dishes like Kung Pao Shrimp and Cumin Lamb on many Chinese restaurant menus. But you don’t have to leave your home. As far as I’m concerned, it’s worth the sticker price to learn the techniques.Turkey and the Wolf: Flavour Trippin’ in New Orleans by Mason Hereford
Chef Mason Hereford has put to paper some of the magic that draws locals and tourists alike to his popular New Orleans sandwich shop, Turkey and the Wolf. The cookbook is full of recipes accessible to home cooks. The meatloaf is my favourite. Mi Cocina: Recipes and Rapture from My Kitchen in Mexico by Rick Martinez
With seven sections focused on different regions across the country, Rick Martinez guides you through some of the essential recipes for each. The recipes are lovely, but what I love most are the stories alongside each of them. Food is deeply personal and with Mi Cocina, Martinez is sharing his life in food and inviting you to come along. I Am from Here: Stories and Recipes from a Southern Chef by Vishwesh Bhatt

In 2016, when I was on the graduate scheme (计划) at Deutsche Bank, Marie Inafidon, chief executive of Stemettes, who encourages girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), was also working there. I didn’t meet her at the time, but I did read an article about her and her career.
Learning at 21 years old about the career of a young black woman’s succeeding in a traditionally white male-dominated industry was one of the most influential things that ever happened to me. It gave me confidence that it was possible to do well in the office and work on personal external project at the same time.
Role models can play a central role in shaping a young professional’s career. They are especially important if you belong to an under-represented group for whom a lack of representation in the workplace can lead to feeling isolated and lacking in confidence. They can help those just starting out, whether or not they are a graduate as I was, to believe in their own abilities.
There’s a growing need to have accessible role models. Given the tendency to exaggerate (夸大) success stories, hearing from women who talk honestly about the challenges they have faced, either when starting a business or forming a new career path, is much more effective. A study revealed that 70 per cent of girls say they think differently about their futures after hearing from women role models.
I’m frequently asked about what businesses could be doing to increase racial diversity in the workplace. A good starting point is to actively promote and support the voices of the people in the organisation that are leading positive change and inspiring others. This makes a real difference. Unlike the tokenism (装样子) I still come across, which results in individuals being made the lone representative for a group without real support from the organisation.
Things came full circle for me when I interviewed Ms. Inafidon for my book in 2019. I was able to tell her of the incredible impact her passion and confidence had had on me as a graduate trainee and how grateful I would always be for that.
24.What do we learn about Marie Inafidon?
A.She became successful at 21.
B.She was a trainee at Deutsche Bank.
C.She encouraged girls to take up STEM-related work.
D.She helped the author with her external project personally.
25.Who can benefit most from role models in the work place according to the third paragraph?
A.Experienced professionals. B.A graduate eager to succeed.
C.People without special abilities. D.The young from an under-represented group.
26.What is effective in changing girls’ mindset?
A.Taking on challenging projects.
B.Reading more made-up success stories.
C.Starting their own business as early as possible.
D.Listening to women role models share their experiences.
27.What should businesses do to increase racial diversity in the workplace according to the author
A.Encourage positive opinions.
B.Make more colored people authorities.
C.Include more people of different races.
D.Understand the true meaning of tokenism.
Extremely authentic-looking prosthetic (假体的) eyes can now be 3D-printed in a fraction of the time it would normally take to produce the eyes by hand, scientists demonstrate in a new study.
The new technology can create a prosthetic eye in just 90 minutes, compared with the eight hours it would normally take a skilled technician, or ocularist, to produce one by hand. The 3D-printed eyes require five times less labour to make than traditional methods, the scientists behind the technology wrote in a new paper published in the journal Nature Communications.
The 3D-printed eyes also look more natural than traditional prostheses; this could help improve a patient’s self-confidence in using the devices. “Patients are very conscious about wearing a prosthesis, and they don’t want others to notice,”Johann Reinhard, lead study author and a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Germany, told us. “With these more realistic eyes, it might help them to participate more in society,” he said.
The new printing approach involves taking a specialized image of a patient’s empty eye socket (眼窝) and of their healthy eye. These images are then processed and used to draft blueprints that can be sent to be 3D-printed in the lab. These 3D-printed eyes closely replicate the colour, size and structure of the patient’s healthy eye and are particularly good at capturing the coloured part of the eye, known as the iris, and the white part of the eye, called the sclera. Once finished, the eyes take 15 to 30 minutes to be installed by an ocularist, Reinhard said.
“About 80% of adults in need of prosthetic eyes could theoretically have one made this way, either due to a birth defect that causes an eye to be small or missing or because they’ve lost an eye,” the team said. “However, this wouldn’t be possible for all patients, such as those who have a very complex eye socket, as the software wouldn’t be able to find a matching shape for the prosthetic eye,” Reinhard said.
“More data are needed to see if this technique could also be used to make prosthetic eyes for children, which would require more regulation,” Reinhard said.
28.Which of the following can best describe the 3D-printed eyes
A.Time-consuming. B.Eco-friendly. C.Realistic-looking. D.Fit-of-all.
29.How does the author develop his idea in Paragraph 2
A.By giving examples. B.By justifying an idea.
C.By making a comparison. D.By providing evidence.
30.What can we know about a 3D-printed eye
A.Every adult in need of a prosthetic eye can’t possibly have one.
B.The patients prefer to show off their prosthetic eyes.
C.The installment of one is 5 times faster than a traditional prosthetic eye.
D.It normally takes a skilled technician, or ocularist, to produce one.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.3D Printing—a Promising Technology
B.3D-printed Eyes—a Better Alternative
C.Prosthetic Eyes—the Hope for all Blind People
D.3D-printed Eyes—a Source of Confidence
One bird may not make a summer but seeing or hearing birds does improve mental wellbeing, a ground-breaking study in the journal Scientific Reports has found.
Researchers tracked 1,292 participants’ everyday encounters with birds last year via a smartphone app called Urban Mind. Over the course of two weeks, the participants, from the UK, Europe, the US, China and Australia, were asked every two hours to document how they were feeling, including whether they were happy or stressed.
The researchers found that participants’ average mental wellbeing scores increased when they saw or heard birds, including among those who said they had been diagnosed (诊断) with depression.
Andrea Mechelli, professor of early intervention (干涉) in mental health at King’s College London, said that the positive effect of bird encounters on people with depression was significant because many “interventions that help so-called ‘healthy people’ don’t work for individuals with mental health issues”. Mechelli said, “We know exercise makes everyone feel better. But it’s so challenging to motivate someone with depression to exercise, while contact with bird life is something that, perhaps, is feasible.”
Adrian Thomas, the author of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ Guide to Birdsong, said the report’s findings came as no surprise as most people described their reaction to birdsong as joy. He added, “Birdsong would have once been the natural soundtrack to all human lives, and I do think that it is rooted somewhere deep within us. It is related with spring and good times coming, which is just one of the reasons why we need to appreciate the role of birds in our life and ensure that nature.”
32.What were the participants asked to do
A.Keep record of moods. B.Keep track of birds.
C.Analyze feeling changes. D.Report health issues.
33.What does the underline word “feasible” mean in Paragraph 4
A.Inspiring. B.Practicable. C.Ineffective. D.Measurable.
34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.A reasonable doubt to the research question. B.Potential application of the research results.
C.A further explanation of the research findings. D.Detailed descriptions of the research process.
35.Which of the following may the research contribute to
A.Stress relief methods. B.Bird watching activity.
C.Mental health treatment. D.Bird protection campaign.
Sports is getting its increasing popularity among teens. Many teens in high school want to try sports because they think it will make them popular. 36 Here are some of them.
With electronic products becoming more popular, it has become much easier for teens to be by themselves. Kids used to hang out around the town; now they just sit at home. 37 In this case, they’ll learn how to interact and work as a team— something they’ll find useful later in life.
38 Playing a team sport will help your teens get some exercise to lose weight or get into shape. What’s more, these days, it is becoming harder to show your teens that you love and support them. A great way to do this is by showing up while they are playing games. You can also help them practise, and help with the team fund-raising. These are also great ways to spend time with your kids and talk to them.
You may think your teens aren’t good enough to make their school team. 39 There are plenty of other places besides the school to play team sports. You can also check other “for-fun clubs”. You could look into sports that you may not have thought of. If you do a little research, you are sure to find something your teens will enjoy.
Sports are a great way for your teens to get out of the house, get moving, make friends, and even get a scholarship to college. 40
A.Take it easy.
B.Sports help address teens’ overweight.
C.In my view, it is a waste of time and energy.
D.So why not talk to them about getting into sports today
E.However, there are other benefits your teens don’t realize.
F.How can we develop a hobby of doing sports from now on
G.Yet getting into a sport gives them a chance to go out and socialize.

How can you better understand body language to feel more confident and be more effective in a range of situations If you are struggling to understand how to interpret body language of colleagues in different cultural contexts and how to respond, you may find yourself 56 (search) for a checklist of dos and don’ ts. But this isn’t necessarily the 57 (great) approach. Besides, you can start your interpretation 58 analysing groups, rather than looking at each gesture in isolation.
For example, imagine that you are presenting an idea for a new process in a meeting, and your boss is smiling. Many experts would advise you that smiling is 59 (cultural) universal, so you might assume that your boss must be happy with your presentation. However, making this 60 (assume) without deeper investigation could prove problematic. If you take 61 second look at your boss, you might notice that she is also laughing slightly, looking down and moving her pen. This could mean a range of different things. How can you understand your boss’s reaction correctly The answer is to check that your analysis of their body language matches with 62 the person says and how they say it.

Biar Kon grew up in a shelter in Kenya, after his parents were forced to migrate from neighbouring Sudan. When he was 17, he moved to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, to attend school.
Once he arrived, he needed to get some documents from the Sudanese embassy (大使馆) . But when he went to look for the embassy, he couldn’t find it. He asked a few people for directions, and no one knew where it was. Then an older woman tapped him on the back.
The lady said to him, “Hey, my son. ” “That was the first word, ” Kon recalled. “She said, ‘Hey, my son, how are you doing ‘” The woman told Kon that she had seen him asking questions of multiple people as they passed, and she wondered if he needed money for food, or a place to stay. Then Kon realized that the woman thought he was homeless.
“Because in Kenya, it’s very common,” Kon said. “Kids at 17, kids at 15, kids at 12—kids of any age can be on the street looking for survival. ”
They cleared up the confusion, and the woman was able to give Kon directions to the embassy. Then she told him about the deeper reason she had asked if he needed help: because of her experience as a mother.
“I wouldn’t want my child to be on the street,” the woman told him. “And anytime I see a child on the street, I feel like I have an obligation (义务) to help.”
The woman’s generosity left a deep impression on Kon. And it inspired him to pay it forward, five years later, when he moved to Boston, Massachusetts.
When he arrived there, Kon expected that everyone he saw would be well-off and successful. So he was shocked at the number of homeless people he encountered on the street.

【原文】 It’s good to see people live longer lives. But how we can help people who live longer live better has been a big challenge. Now, a number of businesses are offering services specifically designed for the elderly. One of them is True Call. True Call is a UK telephone communication service that can block unwanted telephone calls. Businessman Robert Smith has set the system in his mother’s home, since a group of people had stolen her life savings through phone calls a few months earlier.
Another one called Red & Yellow Care is a health care service. According to the director Mike Hart, their staff is trained to be able to explain their service in a simple and clear way, and unafraid of repeating the information. All the training is to provide safer and friendlier service for the elderly.
Then there is Safeway, a supermarket chain. One of the staff, Martin Bateman says that he and his co-workers now ask older customers more frequently if they need help at the checkouts. These customers may not know what to do with the self-checkout machines. All in all, the elderly are gaining increasing attention from the society. They’ll be living longer and better.

66.As we all know, the cloning technology is the achievement in science. However, whether cloning technology should be developed or not is debatable.
Different people hold different opinions. Some people argued that cloning should be encouraged because it can speed up the development of science and bring us into a new age of progress. Besides, cloning is beneficial in that it helps cure many diseases and save lives. However, other people held that cloning technology has too many problems at present, and that the misuse of it may lead to unimaginable consequences. Further more, the cloning of humans could lead to many problems, such as rapid population increase.
In my opinion, since cloning is such a new technology, we must be careful to make appropriate use of it. In this case it could bring us a lot of benefits; otherwise, we may end up suffering because of it.
67.One possible version:
One day, outside a coffee shop, he observed an interaction between a young woman and a homeless man. The homeless man asked the young lady if she could spare change. And she said, “Why don’t you go to look for a job ” Kon reflected back to that moment five years earlier, when the woman in Nairobi had mistaken him for a homeless person. Kon was still touched by her kindness. So he went up to the man, to see what he could do. He told Kon why he was on the street—because he made a mistake when he was in high school, and he couldn’t get a job now.
After learning the young man’s story, Kon knew it was time to pass on what that kind lady had done to him. Kon bought the man some breakfast, and gave him a little bit of money. The young man was moved to tears and thanked him again and again. Today, it’s an encounter he reflects on often. For him, it was a reminder that you never know what people are going through unless you make a point to talk to them—the way the woman in Nairobi made an effort to talk to him. Kon hopes in the future he could start a non-profit to provide housing and social support for people living on the street—an idea partly inspired by his unsung hero.
