Housing officials say that lately they are noticing something different:students seem to lack the will, and the skill,to deal with ordinary conflicts.“We have students who are mad at each other and they text each other in the same room,” says a teacher.“So many of our conflicts are because kids don’t know how to solve a problem by formal discussion.”
And as any pop psychologist will tell you, bottled emotions lead to silent discontent (不满) that can boil over into frustration and anger. At the University of Florida, emotional conflicts occur about once a week, the university’s director of housing education says,“Over the past five years, roommate conflicts have increased. The students don’t have the person-to-person discussions and they don’t know how to handle them.” The problem is most dramatic among freshmen;housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.
Administrators guess that reliance on cell phones and the Internet may have made it easier for young people to avoid uncomfortable encounters. Why express anger in person when you can vent (发泄) in a text “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Meta like:‘Oh,my roommate kept me up all night studying,’” says Dana Pysz,an assistant director at the University of California,Los Angeles.“It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other, consequently creating even more conflicts as complaints go public.” In recent focus groups at North Carolina State University, dorm residents said they would not even deal with noisy neighbors on their floor.
Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even modest conflicts. Some parents continue to interfere (干涉) on campus.
24.What is the main reason for many roommate conflicts
A.Students are not good at reaching an agreement about the problems.
B.Students are not satisfied with each other.
C.Housing directors are not responsible for them.
D.Students are not strong-willed.
25.What do we learn from the second paragraph
A.Students, especially freshmen, should bottle up their dissatisfaction.
B.Students in Florida sit down and have a person-to-person talk once a week.
C.Not all students are able to handle conflicts by the time they graduate.
D.The number of conflicts among roommates has decreased in the past five years.
26.What is the attitude of Dana Pysz when he mentions roommates reveal their conflicts in the media
A.Disapproving. B.Indifferent. C.Supportive. D.Unclear.
27.What should parents do according to the passage
A.They should be involved in their children’s life on campus.
B.They should deal with their children’s problems in their whole lives.
C.They should constantly contact the administrators of the college.
D.They should teach their children the skills to tackle the conflicts.
C
Does it ever seem like something is going on with our attention spans Gloria Mark,an attention researcher at the university of California, says there is scientific evidence that attention spans have shrunk considerably.“We started studying attention span length over 20 years ago,” Mark said.“In 2003,we found that attention spans averaged about two-and-a-half minutes on any screen before people switched. In the past five, six years, they are averaging 47 seconds on the screen.”
Mark maintains that a shorter attention span has three downsides:The first is that people make more errors when they do attention shifting;the second downside is that it takes longer to do something, because we have to adjust to every new task every time we shift;the third downside — maybe this is the worst of all — is that stress increases. When people are working on multiple tasks and they have to shift their attention, their blood pressure rises.
You don’t have to be a professor to guess at the cause of our great distract ability:It’s technology,of course—phones, social media, texting. It might be hard to think of the last time you even had a tech-free hour.So she offered a couple of tips for staying focused:First, when you feel the itch to change tasks, analyze why.If it’s just boredom or procrastination (拖延症),make a deal with yourself to work another 20 minutes, and then treat yourself to a reward.
Second, picture yourself at the end of the day. What do you want to have accomplished What do you want to feel “A concrete visualization of yourself sitting on the couch, you know, watching your favourite show is really good motivation,” she said.
The Internet has this incredible resource available to us,so rather than be upset by it because it distracts us,how can we turn that around and instead find value from it And how can we utilize our time best when we use the resources from the Internet without getting exhausted from it These questions are what Gloria Mark will focus on in her subsequent research.
28.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.Negative effects of short attention spans. B.Benefits of long attention spans.
C.Causes of short attention spans. D.Ways to deal with short attention spans.
29.What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean

The Yellow River is the cradle of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it.Now,scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things.Devices (设备) set up along the river collect and transmit information to the center.Based on the information,a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (治理) is “smart stones”.According to Wang Qin,a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau,a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips,a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones.“Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao from the bureau.“Now the smart stones can do this for us,more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects.According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information.“Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the hatches (未雨绸缪),”said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts.According to the Ministry of Water Resources,in the future,we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
32.What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River
A.To conduct historical research. B.To create a virtual tourist attraction.
C.To raise public awareness of river protection. D.To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
33.How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance
A.They record water quality.
B.They improve the river’s beauty.
C.They monitor and report dike movements.
D.They serve as markers for important locations.
34.What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River
A.Entertaining tourists. B.Collecting information on dike conditions.
C.Patrolling and taking wildlife photos. D.Testing water quality.
35.What does the underlined word “comprehensive” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Complete. B.Basic. C.Beautiful. D.Natural.

How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends What if the only way of getting news from far away friends was writing letters that took ages to be delivered 36 Thanks to progress in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has changed significantly.
Nowadays,we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with. 37 All you need is a wi-fi connection. The digital age also helps us find people who share our interests, such as playing an unusual instrument.Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect people who share the same hobbies, even if they live on the other side of the world.
38 It depends. If people always exchange true personal information online, these friendships can be real and meaningful.Yet we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth. On social media sites, people tend to post only positive updates that make them appear happy and friendly. 39 Remember the saying:on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.A young person could be old;a woman could be a man;we could even be sharing our information with bad guys.
This doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bath water, though.Technology has changed the way we make friends, but the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. 40
A.The Internet helps us make more friends.
B.But smiling photos can hide real problems.
C.This was how things worked not very long ago.
D.However, does the Internet really bring people closer
E.However, are the “friends” you make online really your friends

Losing a parent is one of the most painful parts of life.No matter how old we are when our parents leave us,it can be a heartbroken experience. Our memories are all that are left of them and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures. That’s how Mara Soriano feels about the teddy bear that she tragically (不幸地) lost during her recent move to a new apartment.
Diagnosed (诊断) with cancer,Mara Soriano’s mother,Marilyn, gave her daughter the bear as a gift. After her mother’s death last June, the gift became even more special.“That bear was basically the last reminder of my mom.It was her voice that accompanied me,” she said in an interview.
The toy didn’t cost a lot,but it contained a recording of her mother’s voice telling her that she loved her so much and was proud of her.The bear, called Mama Bear, was in the backpack that contained electronics like an iPad.When the bag was lost last week during the move, the 28-year-old was heartbroken—not for the devices (设备),but for Mama Bear.
Mara posted a photo of her and her Mama Bear on the Internet, explaining the importance of the bear.Millions of netizens were touched by the story.More and more people were talking about the bear, but there was no good news for Mara.So again and again she posted online about the item and the story behind it,hoping it could catch more viewers’ attention in a big way.
Actor Ryan Reynolds was moved by Mara’s story and then posted an appeal for Mama Bear’s safe return.“I think we all need this bear to come home,” he wrote.Along with the message,he also offered a reward for the people who found the bear.

On Wednesday, the 8th of December 2021,more than 100 officials met in Los Angeles to celebrate the city’s 40 years of friendship with the Chinese city of Guangzhou.A similar celebration took place in Guangzhou on the 6th of December, with the opening of the Guangzhou-Los Angeles Friendship Garden.
Los Angeles,on America’s West Coast,is the second largest city in the US (after New York City,on the East Coast),while Guangzhou is the capital of China’s southern Guangdong province.
The relationship between the two “sister cities” first began in 1981,shortly after the US and China first began working together in 1979.
The main idea of “sister cities” is to share goods and ideas with other cities around the world, and for the past four decades,Guangzhou and Los Angeles have been a great example of this. They have also worked together to support one another through difficult times and to fight climate change and coronavirus.
