(2025·湖南省长沙市第一中学高三阶段性检测(一))When our youngest sister was born, my little brother Tom was six and I was eight. I had always been the “Big Sister” and he had always been “The Baby”.
Our sister's arrival was a complete surprise to both of us. In those days no one worried much about sibling rivalry (兄弟姐妹间的较劲), and no “experts” told us how to deal with another child in the house. We had wise and loving Grandpa and Mom, however.
I was excited about the baby and loved to hold her and help care for her. Tom's feelings were quite different! He just looked at her and left, preferring to spend the evening in his room. When I went to his room to talk to him and try to get him to play games with me, he just looked away. “Why did they have to get that baby?” Tom asked.
Later that night, Grandpa came over to see the new baby. As he held her, he said to Tom, “You know, she's a lot like the baby lamb I'm raising on the bottle. I have to take care of her and feed her often, just the way your mom does with the baby.” Tom said, “I'd rather have the lamb.”
Grandpa heard and said, “Well, if you'd rather have a lamb, maybe we could trade your little sister for it. I'll give you a day to think it over, and if you still want to trade tomorrow, we'll do it.” I thought I saw him wink at Mom, but I knew I must have been mistaken because Grandpa never winked at anyone.
After Grandpa left, Mom read to Tom for a long while. Tom kept looking at the baby, and Mom asked him to hold our little sister while she went to the bathroom. When Mom came back, Tom was gently touching the baby's smooth black hair, and as he held her hand, she took hold of his finger.

“Mom, look! She's holding my hand!” Tom smiled. “Sure, she knows you're her brother,” Mom smiled. He held the baby for more minutes, and seemed much happier at bedtime. The next day, Tom and I spent much of the day watching the baby bathe, watching her sleep and holding her. That evening, when Grandpa came back and asked Tom whether he was ready to trade, Tom looked surprised that Grandpa had remembered the bargain. He began to worry that Grandpa would take our sister away.
“She's a day older now. I think she's worth five lambs now,” Tom said. Grandpa looked shocked, and said he had to think it over. Anxious, Tom went to Mom's room and held the baby for long. The next day, Grandpa visited us and told Tom he was preparing five lambs. Tom took a deep breath and said, “The baby is worth fifty lambs now!” Annoyed, Grandpa answered, “I can't afford fifty lambs. I guess you'll have to keep her and help your parents look after her.” Tom smiled, and this time I really did see Grandpa wink at Mom.

(2025·黑龙江省哈尔滨市第三十二中学高三月考)Every Sunday, the competition started. The three of us would set our alarm clocks to wake up earlier than anyone else. I had set my alarm clock to six in the morning, hoping that my brothers wouldn't start before me.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Groaning, I reached over to my nightstand and slapped the top of my alarm clock. “Too early on this cold winter day,” I murmured. I curled back into my warm blanket and fell asleep again.
My eyes blinked open to the whirring sound of the vacuum cleaner. “They chose their chores first!” I thought with despair. I jumped up from my bed and rushed to the bathroom, where I started the only chore that was left for me. I would definitely be shoveling (铲) the driveway while they built an igloo (冰屋), I thought cheerlessly, rubbing and wiping madly at the toilet bowl.
When I finished cleaning the toilet and sink, my brothers came into the bathroom to watch me clean the bathtub as they mocked me about how I'd overslept and got stuck with the longest chore. “Whoever finishes last has to shovel the driveway, remember?” my older brother reminded me with a triumphant smile when we put on our big coats and snow pants to go outside.
The three of us stepped outside into the knee deep snow and shielded our eyes from the brightness. My brothers wasted no time and dashed off to play in the yard, leaving me behind to tackle the frustrating task of shoveling the driveway. With a heavy sigh, I inched through the thick snow to the driveway, my boots sinking with each step. I grunted (嘟哝) with effort as my brothers yelled with joy. Sunday would never be my day, I sighed.

[高分范文]
Suddenly. I heard the sound of a shovel rubbing against the driveway concrete. Turning around, I saw my brothers busily scooping snow from the driveway. “We're not helping; we just need blocks of snow for our igloo,” my younger brother explained hastily. Watching them, I couldn't help but smile. Despite their explanation, it was clear they were helping me, which greatly warmed my heart. With their help, the task became easier, and soon scoop by scoop, we cleared out the driveway together, laughing and chatting as we worked. We dug up enough snow to build the igloo of our dreams.
After we finished, we sat inside the igloo, laughing about our morning adventures. As we sipped on some hot cocoa, the warmth of the cocoa and the snugness of the igloo made me forget all about the cold outside. Looking around at my brothers' smiling faces, I felt a warm sense of contentment. Despite our silly competitions and occasional teasing, there was nowhere else I'd rather be than right there, surrounded by my family. As we sat together, I couldn't help but feel grateful for these moments. It wasn't just about the igloo or the hot cocoa; it was about the bond we shared as siblings. That day, as we sat in our cozy snow fortress, I realized that our rivalry was just a small part of the love and support we had for each other. And that's what made our Sundays so special.

(2025·湖北省襄阳市襄城区襄阳市第五中学高三月考)It was late, about 10:15 pm when Janice Esposito safely arrived at the Bellport, New York, train station; she happily jumped into her little car, and couldn't wait to begin the 20 minute drive home to see her loved husband and seven year old son. She had just returned from visiting her older mother in Los Angles and had traveled the route many times before. She drove on autopilot (自动驾驶) practically and skillfully: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then suddenly—wham!
Out of nowhere on that awful night a truck hit Janice's car, violently pushing her to move backward some 100 feet away onto the railroad tracks. She sat in the car, bruised (撞伤) but mostly just knocked out by the impact and by the vehicle's airbags.
As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed. He'd just closed his book, turned off the light and was lazily crawling under the covers when he heard the high pitched clang sound of metal on metal and breaking glass coming from not far outside his bedroom window. As a volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, DiPinto, 64, instantly became alert and never stopped to think. He quickly grabbed a big professional flashlight out of habit, put his own cellphone in the pocket of his pajamas (睡衣), and hurriedly ran out the door without getting changed. “Any firefighter would have done what I did,” he later told Newsday. “We're always on duty.”
The first truck DiPinto came upon, 2,000 feet away from his front yard, was the one that had hit Janice, who was trapped in her car still, her eyes closed and her mind semiconscious. He looked around and spotted one wheel of Janice's car positioned on the railroad tracks.

And then he heard a terrible sound: the bells signaling an oncoming train. DiPinto's heart froze in his chest as he realized the upcoming danger. Without any delay, he rushed towards Janice's car. After quickly assessing the situation, despite the huge potential risk, DiPinto swiftly smashed open the car's window with his big professional flashlight, swung open the door and mightily pulled Janice out of the vehicle before it was too late. The speeding train was roaring towards the car like a monster in times of crisis.
The heavy train, traveling at 65 miles per hour, crashed into the car. With a loud bang, the car was knocked off. Some flying debris shooting in all directions, DiPinto instinctively protected Janice from being hurt again with his own body. Fortunately, they both narrowly escaped! DiPinto calmly dialed 911 and it didn't take long before Janice was rushed to hospital. Thanks to DiPinto's heroic rescue, Janice had a near brush with death. Afterward, DiPinto was reported and awarded “A Hero in Pajamas” to honor his fearless and selfless actions.

(2025·江苏省靖江高级中学高三月考)There's a lot that goes into moving to a new city. You're house hunting in areas you aren't familiar with, dragging all of your belongings around, trying to figure out which grocery store keeps your favourite noodles in stock, and wondering when you'll ever find a new dentist. This was exactly what I went through when I settled in Chicago.
Every day, I was fully occupied, exhausted. I found my new city so big and unfriendly.
After graduating from college in May, I moved from the town of Oxford, Mississippi, to Chicago to start my full time job. Typically, when I went through lots of change in my life, I had consistent faces around me: my family or my friends. This time, however, it was just me. And for someone who's an introvert (内向的人), this was anything but easy.
Besides, the job itself was also something beyond my expectation. What I learnt in college was totally different from what I needed to do in the company. I worked longer hours to sort things out and couldn't sleep well at night. It was a lot of change at once. It was too much. I was helpless.
What's worse, my poor health added to the helplessness. Due to days of pressure, I had a physical problem. It seemed that I had to go to hospital for a thorough examination. It seemed a small challenge compared to the one I was about to face, but things started to go wrong right from the beginning.
Not having a car or knowing the city, I was depending on a couple of buses to get around. Although I'd left myself plenty of time, soon it was obvious that I was going to be late, as I had mistakenly got on a bus that was taking me in the opposite direction.

I had no choice but to get off the bus. Suddenly, a car stopped in front of me and it was the same woman.

[高分范文]
I had no choice but to get off the bus. Standing on the pavement, I felt totally at a loss. Strangers passed by, but I couldn't gather the courage to ask for directions. Just at the moment, a middle aged woman, instead of moving on, stopped to ask if I needed help. After I explained my situation to her, she pointed to a bus stop across the street. “No.5 bus will take you to the hospital,” she said kindly. I showed my thanks and hurried to the stop, where I waited for the bus restlessly.
Suddenly, a car stopped in front of me and it was the same woman. She waved her hand and offered to give me a ride. The smile on her face was so bright that I was nearly moved to tears. With gratitude filling my heart, I got in the car. “I see you're not familiar with the city,” she chuckled. I told her about my helplessness in the new city along the way. “Don't worry. Everything will work out here,” she comforted me when dropping me off at the hospital. Yes, everything would go fine, starting from making such an amazing friend.

(2025·云南省云南民族大学附属高级中学高三月考)Dressed in my white polo shirt and black pants, I was ready for my first day as a fashion's worker. I had been working on a register for over two weeks when they decided that I was ready to work as a shop assistant.
I remember the feeling of excitement because this was something new, and nervousness because I didn't know what was going to happen. I didn't even know whom I would be working with. So many thoughts came floating into my head as I walked from my car to the store.
“What if the customers don't like me What if I can't handle this job Will I remember everything?” With my mind filled with all these what ifs, I walked back to the break room and put my purse in my locker. Then, with my shaking hands and upset stomach, I walked back to the front of the store and met with Theresa at the service desk where Theresa greeted me warmly.
“We are going to have you work with Vicki today. She is a friendly lady and takes charge of the men's department. She can teach you how to communicate with the customers. So let's take a walk back to the men's department, and she can get you trained in,” Theresa said.
“Okay,” I replied with nervousness.
Walking for what seemed like a long time, we finally reached our destination. Vicki, a young lady in her early thirties, came bouncing out to receive us with a light hearted walk and a brilliant white smile. We must have caught her a little off guard because she stopped, stared at us for a moment, and said, “Hi Theresa!”
“Hey, Vicki! I'd like you to meet Kayli. She is going to be working with you for the next couple of weeks.” Theresa introduced me to this young lady.
“Hi, Kayli,” she replied with more enthusiasm than I had expected.
“Well, I'll leave it up to you, Vicki,” Theresa happily replied, then turned and walked away, leaving Vicki and me standing there.

In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. I had a smile on my face. But as a matter of fact, I had butterflies in my stomach. I expected the usual uncomfortable silence that always happens when two strangers meet, but I was wrong. Vicki was very comfortable to be around and easy to talk to. She felt my nervousness. “Take it easy. Just be yourself and you will do a good job,” Vicki smiled at me. Then she explained different styles and trends, and how to assist customers.
Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. I recited the information of many clothes and couldn't wait to serve the customer on my own. That day I received ten customers and all of them showed satisfaction with me. I regained my confidence and no longer doubted myself. That day, I ended up learning more than just the tasks of a fashion's worker. I learned to communicate, and to just be myself. Vicki has taught me that it was okay to be myself, and for that, I will be forever grateful.

(2025·福建省福州市高中毕业班质量监测(一模))Emily Harper sat at her desk, staring blankly at the math problems in front of her. Numbers and variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't make sense of it.
Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her confidence. Her parents decided to step in. “We need to find you some help,” her mother gently suggested one evening.
Then came Mr Jenkins, a retired local teacher known for his unique teaching style. Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But she unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change.
Their first session was tense. Mr Jenkins, sensing her frustration, didn't dive straight into problems. Instead, he asked about her interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you know where to look.”
Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的). For the first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a puzzle waiting to be solved.
However, progress was slow. Weeks passed with minimal improvement, and Emily's patience wore thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears, convinced she was sure to fail. Mr Jenkins said, “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas. Masterpieces aren't created overnight.”
Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on. She began to see the connections between the steps, how each solution followed a logical path. Small victories in practice problems gave her some hope. Mr Jenkins was always there, celebrating her successes, no matter how minor.

[高分范文]
Gradually, Emily's confidence grew with Mr Jenkins' help. She found herself approaching math problems with a newfound curiosity instead of anxiety. The once confusing numbers and symbols began to become patterns she could understand. Mr Jenkins continued to teach her in his unique way. When it's time for her to take the mid term test, her once hesitant hand now moved steadily across the paper. The joy she felt when a solution clicked into place was something she had never expected to experience with math.
Emily's heart raced when the results day arrived. She sat in the classroom, her hands trembling slightly as she received her test paper. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she saw the grade—a solid A. Tears of relief and happiness welled up in her eyes. At that moment, Emily knew that she had not only conquered her fear of math but also discovered the power of perseverance.

(2025·广东省中山市濠头中学等校高三检测)It was a sunny day. Anabia, an 11 year old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anabia was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was disturbing her today.
Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was. Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Rida was quick, smart and intelligent. Anabia became jealous of Rida's intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anabia's roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Saima wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒). Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Saima.
Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia's carelessness and told her that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to come prepared for the contest that had been announced a week in advance. Anabia's best friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything, much to Anabia's surprise and disappointment.

Anabia's eyes were filled with tears. She found something hard to swallow. To her sadness, she lost the art competition before she even started. Just then, a box of oil painting sticks appeared in front of her eyes. “If you don't mind, I think we can share these.” Rida, the girl who she once hoped to beat, extended a helping hand. Anabia hesitated, but quickly they were both devoted into their works. Time flies in the blink of an eye. After handing in their works, Anabia reached out her hand.
Then Rida held Anabia's hand, and the two girls waited for the winners to be announced. “I'm sorry. I once became jealous of your intelligence, and hoped to beat you,” Anabia apologized sincerely. Rida hugged her delightedly and said she hoped they would be friends in the future. It seemed that who would be the winner was not so important at the moment. The sun shone warm sunlight into the room and also shone on the hearts of the two girls. The world always prepares a surprise for the people who like the sun. They both got the first place.

(2025·辽宁省鞍山市普通高中高三质量监测)In the small town of Elmsworth, there lived a boy named Daniel, who was often overshadowed by his more outgoing siblings (兄弟姐妹). He was quiet and thoughtful, preferring the company of books to that of people. Yet, deep inside, there was a burning desire to prove himself, to step out of the shadows and into the light.
One day, a golden opportunity presented itself when his school announced a public speaking competition, an opportunity that Daniel knew he had to seize. The competition represented not just an academic challenge but a personal one. It was a chance to remove his self doubts and show his true abilities to himself and others. But the thought of standing alone on a stage filled him with fear, a terrible feeling that always kept him in the shadows. Daniel didn't tell his mother the news of the speaking competition when he got home after school that day. But his mother sensed his hesitation and pain. Instead of suggesting anything, she took him for a walk in the woods just beyond their backyard. There, among the towering trees, she showed him a tiny acorn (橡子) lying in the soil. “This small acorn,” she bent down and said, “has the potential to become a powerful oak (橡树). It will push through the soil, fighting against the darkness and seeking the light. It's the same with you, Daniel. The strength to grow, to reach for the sky, is already within you.” She paused, allowing the words to sink into his heart, her gaze filled with the belief that he too could achieve greatness.
Daniel looked at the acorn, then at his mother, and felt a spark of determination. It was as if the tiny acorn had whispered to his soul, “You too can rise above the ordinary.” With a newfound sense of purpose, he knew he would face the competition with the same strength that the acorn would one day display as a towering oak.

With renewed courage, Daniel began to prepare for the competition. Immersed in the world of words and ideas, he rose early, referring to books and practicing his speech every day, with his voice echoing through the quiet house. He also stayed up late, polishing his message. He felt his confidence grow as he mastered the art of public speaking. He stood in front of the mirror, his voice growing increasingly strong with each repetition. The words that once stumbled on his tongue now flowed with ease. With time going by, he was fueled by the belief that he could achieve what once seemed impossible.
The day of the competition arrived. Waiting backstage, Daniel felt his heart pounding in his chest and nervousness surging through him, which almost weakened his resolution. Closing his eyes, he recalled the acorn's silent strength and his mother's words. With the image of the strong oak guiding him, he stepped on the stage, ready to embrace his moment in the spotlight. He delivered his speech in clear, persuasive and infectious language, which surprised even himself. Thunderous applause lingering in the room, Daniel knew he had proved himself, stepping out of the shadows and into the light.

The forest was attractive, with towering trees that seemed to touch the sky and colorful wildflowers under my feet. I walked deeper into the woods, attracted by the pleasant sounds of birds. The path I followed was winding and narrow, but I paid little attention, carried away by the beauty. I started to notice that the trees around me looked unfamiliar. Soon I found myself lost. I realized that I had no idea which way to go.
The sun was setting and I knew that I needed to find a way out before it got dark. I started walking, trying to remember which direction I had come from. But the forest was a maze (迷宫) of winding paths, and I soon found myself going in circles. Every tree looked the same, and every path seemed to lead nowhere.
The sound of leaves made me jump. Was it a wild animal My heart was racing and I tried to stay calm as I listened for other sounds. But there was only silence, broken now and then by the distant calls of birds.
As the sun set, I fully understood the seriousness of my situation. There was no food or water left. I was completely alone, lost in a wilderness that could easily devour (吞噬) me. I walked nervously, tripping over things in my path, feeling frightened with a racing heartbeat. Hours passed, or maybe only minutes. Time had lost all meaning in this place.

But then, as I was about to give up hope, I saw a weak light in the distance. As I came closer, the light grew brighter. It was coming from a small area in the forest. In the center stood a tiny wooden house, its windows shining warmly in the darkness. With a feeling of hope, I ran towards the house and knocked on the door. A man opened it, with his face filled with worry. “Are you lost?” he asked. I nodded, too tired to speak.
The house's owner welcomed me inside. I sat down on a chair and the man offered me food and water. We talked for hours about his life in the forest. His eyes told me that he had found peace in that wilderness. He kindly allowed me to stay overnight at his house. As the sun rose above the treetops, I knew that it was time to leave. The man offered to guide me out of the forest. From then on, we became friends. I learned something valuable from my journey that sometimes when we are lost, we find unexpected treasures.

(2025·安徽省合肥市第七中学高三月考)After a busy week, Emily and her parents decided to go on a mountain picnic. They longed to fully experience nature's beauty and enjoy quality family time. Little did they know, this outing would be filled with unexpected twists and turns (波折).
Arriving at the mountain's base, they discovered a house, in front of which Mike and his father had just finished loading a boat onto Mike's truck. Emily approached them and asked for the best picnic spot in the area. Knowing the mountain well, Mike suggested a location about two hours' walk away. “It's worth the effort,” he assured them.
Parking their car next to Mike's truck and carrying their picnic supplies, Emily and her parents set off on the winding road. Tall green trees on one side, a flowing stream on the other, the road eventually led them to a breathtaking clearing dotted with colorful wildflowers. They enjoyed their delicious sandwiches, fruits, and snacks, engaging in pleasant conversations.
Just as they finished their meal and settled down to relax, dark clouds unexpectedly rolled in. It looked like rain. Panicked, they hurriedly set up the tent they had brought. No sooner had they entered than raindrops began pouring on the roof. Heavy rain enveloped the surroundings, making it impossible to see anything. They had no choice but to patiently wait it out.
After what felt like a century, the rain ceased. Emily and her parents wasted no time packing up their belongings, ready to get downhill. However, their excitement turned to worry when they discovered that the small stream they had previously crossed had turned into a wide and impassable river. With no cellphone signal, they were trapped without a means of seeking help. To make matters worse, darkness was approaching.

Suddenly, they heard the sound of a vehicle from across the river. A truck appeared around the bend of the road—a sense of relief washed over them as they realized it was Mike's truck. It turned out that Mike had noticed that it was getting dark but Emily's car was still parked in the open space in front of his house. Thinking of the heavy rain, he suspected something bad might have happened to them. Without delay, Mike and his father jumped into the truck and headed uphill. Nearing the picnic spot, Mike heard the shout for help and, in the next moment, saw Emily and her parents waving their hands desperately on the other side of the river. Mike immediately stopped, and with his father's help, moved the boat from his truck into the water.
Emily and her parents boarded the boat. Safely crossing the river, they returned to the base of the mountain in Mike's truck. Emily and her parents were not only grateful for their safe return, but also for the kindness and assistance they received from Mike and his father. They expressed their heartfelt thanks to Mike and his father for their swift response and invaluable assistance, tears welling up in their eyes. This unforgettable experience taught them the power of kindness and inspired them to pay it forward. They also learned a valuable lesson on the importance of being well prepared for exploring nature. No doubt it is a mountain picnic that has left a deep impression on them.

What if the customers don't like me What if I can't handle this job Will I remember everything?” With my mind filled with all these what ifs, I walked back to the break room and put my purse in my locker.

There, among the towering trees, she showed him a tiny acorn (橡子)
lying in the soil.

(2025·江苏省射阳中学高三月考)One summer day, I decided to go for a walk in the nearby forest. I had my backpack prepared with water, food, and sunscreen. I was excited to spend some time in nature, away from the busy city.
