Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night.
Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30, 34-year-old Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions. “It was -20℃, and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,” said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street.
For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the street at one point in his life. Based on his experience, Payne knew that the homeless people still living on the street desperately needed help and she wanted to step up.
However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn’t want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.
Payne’s selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention. “I am a regular person,” said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers. “It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side.”
11.What was the biggest problem homeless people had when extreme weather came (no more than 10 words)
12.Why was Candice Payne determined to help homeless people (no more than 10 words)
13.How did Candice Payne help the homeless people (no more than 8 words)
14.What does the underlined part mean in the last paragraph (no more than 3 words)
15.What do you think of Payne Please give your reasons. (no more than 20 words)
“Lonely” is defined in the dictionary as “unhappy because you are alone or do not have anyone to talk to”. However, in my perspective, “being alone” can also be meaningful and enjoyable. In other words, “being alone” isn’t equivalent to “loneliness”. Actually, we can literally enjoy our time when staying alone.
Think of loneliness as the “tunnel phase” of our lives. It’s a time when we don’t have a group of friends around to keep us company; when we are away from the hustle and bustle (熙熙攘攘) of the outside world; when we get the chance to tune in to our inner monologue (独白); when we are given the time to recharge ourselves on our own so that we can focus entirely on ourselves. It is during these periods that, without being disturbed and distracted, we are able to discover the things we truly want from our lives. This process is like digging a tunnel, through which we improve ourselves, achieve our goals and get a jolt of power to prepare for the or darkness we may meet with in our future lives.
A distinguished figure skater (花滑冰运动员) once said in his interview that he often felt lonely, but the external environment would to some extent affect his mind and body, making it difficult for him to concentrate during his practice and performance, and thus he was actually willing to be alone and at times would rather be isolated from the world. This type of “loneliness” must be one of the reasons why he has been able to deliver so many elaborate and splendid performances throughout his career.
So don’t be frightened by the temporary void or unhappy feeling when you have to he alone. Instead, cherish and enjoy the sense of loneliness you get when you are completely free. Spend time with yourself.
We become more independent in loneliness. We grow stronger in loneliness. Most importantly, we find our complete selves in loneliness. When we learn to embrace the feeling of “loneliness” and enjoy the time in which there is no other, loneliness itself ceases to exist.
16.What’s the author’s opinion about “being alone”

B.To demonstrate the factor of the success.

A.Time spent with yourselves is more enjoyable than that with others.

D.Loneliness can exist all the time, so we should change our attitude toward it.

Likely to suffer from loss of memory from time to time Smart cameras can now remind you.
Khai Truong at the University of Toronto in Canada and his colleagues have created a smartphone app that records interactions with household objects. The system involves a barcode-like markers that the user sticks to objects whose use they would like to track.
With the smartphone worn around your neck, the app automatically records a short video clip when a marked object comes into view. “The user is able to look through the application and see the last time they interacted with it.” says Truong. The app can help people track the state of objects — such as whether they locked a door or switched a light off — as well as routine actions. At present it successfully records about 75% of interactions, but only works for fixed objects.
A similar but separate system can solve the problem. E. Akin Sisbot and Jonathan Connell at IBM Research in New York have invented a ceiling-mounted (安装在天花板上的) camera that monitors objects and people. It continuously watches an area such as a tabletop in your home, tracking the placement of objects in relation to one another. It also remembers who first brought an object into the field of view as well as anyone moved it for afterwards. When asked, “Where is my wallet ” the system might respond, “It is next to the vase, under the magazines.”
The camera could also be used in factories or operating theatres to track a vital tools, says Sisbot. For now, the camera uses a deep sensor to spot things. It is limited to detecting objects thicker than 3 centimeters, meaning that it has trouble with thin objects such as a closed laptop placed flat on a table.
The accuracy of such smart camera systems may need to improve before they are widely adopted. “You’ve got to trust the technology for it to be of any comfort or reassurance.” says Geoffrey Ward at the University of Essex in UK.

My mother loves flowers. As soon as warm weather comes around, you will find her planting, watering and weeding over everything. For many years we lived next door to each other, and she spent as much time in my garden as she did her own. After the flowers became plentiful each summer, she would cut colorful bouquets (花束) to enjoy inside the house — both hers and mine. I would often come home from work and find a beautiful arrangement (布置) of fresh flowers on my coffee table.
Shortly before Christmas one year, a local flower shop offered a bouquetamonth special. It seemed to be a great way to thank her for all of the flowers she had given me through the years.
After the holidays, in early January, I drove her to the flower shop to pick up her first month’s bouquet. The small fresh colorful bouquet would hardly fill a small vase (花瓶).
I was so embarrassed. However, after we returned home, she began to arrange the flowers she had received. “Mom, I’m sorry,” I told her. “I can’t believe how skimpy that bouquet is.” She looked at me and smiled. “It’s okay,” she said. “It allows me to better enjoy the beauty of each one.”
Mom’s words helped me to realize something bigger and more important — when we have too many good things, we often fail to enjoy the beauty of each one.
Thanks, Mom, for helping me understand that less is sometimes more.

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to tell you something about the Labor Skills Competition held in our school.
Aiming to enrich our school life and develop students’ basic life skills in our daily life, the Labor Skills Competition included various activities such as making a home-cooked meal, repairing a bike and making traditional handcraft. I took part in the competition of making a home-cooked meal. What excited me most was that our team got the first place. In addition, we also organized various handcrafting activities such as paper cutting.
The Labor Skills Competition was widely welcomed by us students. From these activities, I not only learned team spirit, but also realized the important role of labor in improving our daily life skills.

Based on his experience, Payne knew that the homeless people still living on the street desperately needed help and she wanted to step up. She knew homeless people’s struggle from her husband’s past experience.或She knew the homeless desperately needed help. 或She worried about those stuck on the street.
根据文章第四段“However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn’t want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.(然而,当Payne解释她的意图时,当地的许多酒店拒绝让她支付房费,因为他们不想让无家可归的人住在他们的房间里。Payne说:“没有人想要这些房间,但有一家叫Amber Inn的酒店很好,让我买下了房间。”)”可知,Payne打算通过在旅馆买下房间或支付房费来提供给无家可归的人居住过夜从而帮助他们。故答案By buying hotel rooms for them.或By paying for hotel rooms for them.或She paid for/bought hotel rooms for them.
根据划线单词下一句“However, she insisted she had never done it for attention.(然而,她坚称自己这么做绝不是为了引起注意)”中的“however”可知,前后存在转折关系。 故答案为Was known或Became famous 或Drew public’s attention
She is a warm-hearted person, because she cares about homeless people and tries her best to help them.
