A
Duncan Jurman became interested in butterflies when he was around 5 years old. He noticed a couple of caterpillars (毛虫) in his backyard and was attracted by the different ways that caterpillars can disguise (伪装) themselves to stay safe in potentially dangerous surroundings. From there, he started to learn more about caterpillars and butterflies.
Jurman believes that butterflies play a vital role in our ecosystems. They’re very low on the food web, so they support a lot of different species that rely on them. They’re an indicator species for the health of the environment. Once they disappear, everything else is soon to follow.
Jurman’s goal is to transform the landscape of Florida’s Broward County by turning a weedy suburb into a lively butterfly reserve at a time when insect populations are decreasing quickly worldwide. Jurman believes that every flower planted is a potential home and source of food for caterpillars and butterflies. He eventually developed a butterfly-friendly garden in his backyard by researching the different plants that butterflies prefer. He’s already raised and released more than 5, 000 butterflies from his garden.
Jurman also launched the Bring Butterflies Back campaign to educate people about butterflies and invite them to join his cause of protecting butterflies. He said that a lot of people are surprised to learn that insects are declining at such an alarming rate, largely because the decline has been so gradual. This phenomenon, known as the shifting baselines theory, helps to explain why people are unwilling to take meaningful action to save the environment.
In 2018, Jurman helped to build a butterfly garden at his high school. The garden has had a regenerative effect on the surrounding environment — birds, native lizards, and other insects have returned in great numbers. Other schools have been inspired to start gardens. “I don’t know if we can ever reach the point that we were once at with butterflies, but I think that if everyone gets involved and starts their own garden, they can make their own impact,” Jurman said.
21.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2
A.The significance of butterflies in nature. B.The potential danger to butterflies.
C.The competition between species. D.The food web of insects.
22.Why did Jurman develop a butterfly-friendly garden
A.To research butterflies’ favorite plants. B.To boost the quantity of butterflies.
C.To spread the knowledge about butterflies. D.To enhance the beauty of his backyard.
23.Which of the following illustrates the shifting baselines theory
A.The rapid decline of butterfly populations worldwide.
B.People’s unawareness of gradual change in environment.
C.The process of transforming natural landscapes into reserves.
D.The impact of human activities on insect habitats.
24.What can be inferred from Jurman’s statement in the last paragraph
A.He is enthusiastic about gardening.
B.He feels satisfied with his garden-building efforts.
C.He will carry on despite an uncertain future.
D.He holds a pessimistic attitude to the future of butterflies.

Lots of people are concerned about the ability that artificial intelligence (AI) has to copy their voices. When AI is used to make false recordings of things that a person never said, it is called a “deepfake (深度伪造).” However, AI is helping people who can no longer speak, regain a version of their voice.
21-year-old Alexis Bogan used to love singing along with songs by her favorite musicians like Taylor Swift. She was a singer in her school music group as a teenager. But last August, doctors successfully removed a tumor (肿瘤) from the back of her brain. Then Bogan had trouble speaking. Though she has regained some ability to speak, there is no sign that she will ever be able to speak like she used to.
Last month, Bogan got her voice back in a way. Experts created a tool for her using AI. She uses a text-to-voice app on her phone by writing words and holding it up at the coffee shop so servers can hear her.
The app uses OpenAI’s voice tool. Programmers trained the app using a 15-second sound recording from a cooking video Bogan made as a teenager. Most of the video had cooking sounds, so that is all they could use. But it was enough.
The doctors are working with other patients to gather voice samples, hoping to bring the app to other hospitals around the world. But right now, the app, called Voice Engine, is not publicly available. The company is very limited in who we're giving the technology to because they want to be sure everyone whose voice is being used has given permission. Other AI companies, however, are making their voice-cloning services available to entertainment companies or other organizations.
Bogan believes the technology will progress over time so that when she is older, she does not have to depend on the voice she had as a teenager. She is excited that she is contributing to a change that will help people who are currently using robotic-sounding voices.
25.What happened to Bogan last year
A.She had difficulty singing with famous singers. B.She had a failure in the operation on her brain.
C.She failed to make her school music group. D.She lost voice after a brain surgery.
26.How does Bogan use the app tool
A.By writing down her needs in her phone. B.By making a 15-second sound recording.
C.By recording a cooking video of herself. D.By copying the sound of a teenager.
27.What should the users of Voice Engine do first
A.Gather voice samples from patients. B.Permit OpenAI to use their voices.
C.Record robotic-sounding voice themselves. D.Provide voice-cloning services for companies.
28.What might be the best title for the text
A.AI Generates a New Voice B.AI Can Spot Deepfake Easily
C.AI Helps a Patient Regain Voice D.AI Recognizes Your Voice Well

Scientists exploring the ocean floor in Antaretica have found the largest group of fish nests ever discovered. The huge area of nests came as a surprise, and will help scientists develop a more complete idea of the ocean food web in the area.
In the south Weddell Sea, scientists discovered a group of roughly 60 million icefish nests on the ocean floor. Before this, the largest group of icefish nests ever found had about 60 nests. Researchers from Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute on the research ship Polarstern were studying the ocean floor in Antaretica. To do this, they used a special device called OFOBS. The device collects information and takes pictures and video from 5 — 8 feet (1.5 — 2.5meters) above the sea floor. Lilian Boehringer, a research student, was the first to spot the nests. “They were everywhere,” she told the New York Times. During the first four-hour filming session, the scientists found over 16,000 nests.
The researchers used OFOBS to make two more four-hour “dives”, trying to discover the limits of the nesting area. This allowed them to calculate that the nesting site covers at least 92 square miles (240 square kilometers). The scientists were studying the area because the temperatures there are slightly warmer than the areas around it. The water is still cold — barely above freezing — but that seems to be perfect for icefish.
The nests scientists found were in the shape of a circle, and about 2.5 feet (75centimeters)across. Each nest held about 1,700 eggs. Most of the nests were being guarded by a male icefish. Researchers also spotted some dead icefish and some nests with no fish.
Because of the massive numbers of nests found, the scientists believe the icefish must play a very important part in the ocean’s food cycle in the area. The researchers think the icefish are an important food source for Antarctica’s Weddell Seals.
29.What does the author want to explain in paragraph 2
A.How researchers found icefish nests. B.What the newly-found icefish nests looks.
C.What icefish nests means to the ocean. D.Why icefish build the nests in the ocean.
30.The icefish build their nest in the south Weddell Sea because of its ________.
A.depth B.purity C.area D.condition
31.What’s the significance of the find of icefish nests
A.It provides more evidences about icefish’s living habits.
B.It helps scientists know more about the ocean food chain.
C.It tells us the importance of protecting the big oceans.
D.It helps the fishers get more information about fishing.
32.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Icefish’s Position in Ocean Food Cycle B.Further Studies about the Ocean Food Cycle
C.The Largest Group of Fish Nests Discovered D.The Necessities for the Ocean Food Studies

I sat on the sofa with coffee in hand, and turned on the morning news. I needed something to take my mind off my worries. A few days earlier I’d suddenly decided to fly all the way across the country to Florida for my dad’s birthday. In fact, my dad and I didn’t get along. I hadn’t seen him for a long time.
I thought back painfully on the past. When I was very little, Dad started his own business by opening a car repair shop. Business at the shop was struggling. Dad often came home tired and ill-tempered (脾气暴躁的), and I made sure to stay out of his way. I couldn’t honestly say whether he loved me.
This time I had scheduled a flight to Florida, hoping I would manage to please him and improve our relationship. Now I needed a gift. But what Suddenly I remembered I’d begun making a quilt (被子) for Dad years ago. I’d set the quilt aside pretty quickly because I thought he wouldn’t appreciate it anyway.
Then I searched through a bag storing quilts in the back of my closet. I caught my breath as I found several unfinished pieces of the quilt. I gathered the pieces and studied them, deciding to finish this quilt using a special pattern. I looked online for some patterns and quickly found one called Mourning Cloak-a butterfly.
Suddenly a wave of memories made my heart race. I always loved butterflies as a kid. I once brought a caterpillar (毛虫) home and raised it until it turned into a butterfly. That day, totally unexpectedly, Dad took me to meet Augie Schmitt, a professional butterfly collector in a nearby town. He had taught me everything I knew about insects. Maybe the shared memory about butterflies could help renew our connection, I thought to myself.
I carefully stitched (缝) butterflies onto the quilt, completing the gift the day before my flight. I planned the parents’ house, I walked nervously to the front door and knocked. My visit as a total surprise. After arriving at my dad almost fell over when he saw me.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
“Happy birthday, Dad,” I said, bringing out the quilt.

My mum has always told me to help others. One day last week I was walking back to my home and I passed by an old lady who seemed to be in trouble. I turned back and asked if she was OK, she explained that she was sick and had to struggle to walk with her shopping bags. I offered to carry her things and walked her back home, but she refused because she didn’t want to give me any trouble. I told her it didn’t matter and her home was on my way home. It was a white lie. As I walked with her she talked with me and introduced herself. I in turn told her my name. She asked if I knew Ray Robert. I was shocked and said yes, that was my dad. It turned out that this lady was my dad’s neighbor who had looked after my dad when my grandmother died thirty years ago. My dad had often spoken of her but I had never met her as she had moved away with her family. It was a lovely moment for both of us. When I got home and told my dad about the incident, it made him cry. I was so moved. I am glad that my small active kindness ended in a chance meeting that meant so much to the two people.

M: Grace, thank you for sparing time to attend Entertainment This Week.
W: It’s my pleasure.
M: People say you’re doing work in the new season of My Fair Lady for free. Is this what the show business has become
W: No, not really. All of my acting in the new season is unpaid, but the crew is paid. This is to raise money for the promotion of the show.
M: I notice you’ve tried many different kinds of things: film, TV, and even theater.
W: Yeah, my company arranges me for all-rounded development, though I mainly majored in theater in college.
M: Tell us about the six months you recently spent at the workshop of the film center.
W: I really benefited from this experience—teaching young actors and actresses and working with some great acting artists. It’s very helpful for making you a really well-rounded and active member of the film and television industry.
M: Thank you very much, Grace. We look forward to your new season.

M: You kidding ! I cannot stand YouTube. There are advertisements all the time. It really ruins the experience for me.
W: I agree with you. That is the only problem with it. Especially when an advertisement appears between what you are watching, it is annoying. However, it can recommend what you like according to your browsing history. That’s my favorite feature. What is your favorite then

In 1965, Millard and Linda Fuller decided to trade in their lives as millionaires for a simple life helping others. They made this decision after visiting a community-run farm, where everyone worked together and helped each other. The farm inspired the Fullers to help others, and in 1976 they founded Habitat for Humanity, a non-governmental organization that aims to build houses for poor people around the world. Habitat houses are built by volunteers, and the materials used to build the houses are donated. Because the Fullers believed that people should work to improve their own lives, those who receive a house must also help build their homes. In keeping with their belief that people should help themselves, the Fullers wanted to ensure that houses were not simply handed to people in need. Habitat houses are not free, but they are less expensive than other houses because the organization does not profit from them. Today there are volunteers all around the world. If you can join us, you will help Habitat for Humanity build hope around the world.

根据第二段“Jurman believes that butterflies play a vital role in our ecosystems. They’re very low on the food web, so they support a lot of different species that rely on them. They’re an indicator species for the health of the environment. Once they disappear, everything else is soon to follow. (Jurman认为蝴蝶在我们的生态系统中扮演着至关重要的角色。它们在食物链中处于非常低的位置,因此支持着许多依赖它们的不同物种。它们是环境健康状况的指示物种。一旦它们消失,其他物种也将很快随之灭绝)”可知,第2段主要介绍蝴蝶在自然界中的重要性。故选A。
根据第三段“Jurman’s goal is to transform the landscape of Florida’s Broward County by turning a weedy suburb into a lively butterfly reserve at a time when insect populations are decreasing quickly worldwide. Jurman believes that every flower planted is a potential home and source of food for caterpillars and butterflies. He eventually developed a butterfly-friendly garden in his backyard by researching the different plants that butterflies prefer. He’s already raised and released more than 5, 000 butterflies from his garden.
根据第四段中“He said that a lot of people are surprised to learn that insects are declining at such an alarming rate, largely because the decline has been so gradual. This phenomenon, known as the shifting baselines theory, helps to explain why people are unwilling to take meaningful action to save the environment. (他说,很多人对昆虫以如此惊人的速度减少感到惊讶,这主要是因为这种减少是如此的缓慢和渐进。这种被称为“基准漂移理论”的现象有助于解释为什么人们不愿意采取有意义的行动来保护环境)”可知,基准漂移理论描述的是人们对环境的逐渐变化缺乏察觉,因此不能及时采取行动保护环境。故选B。
24.推理判断题。根据最后一段中““I don’t know if we can ever reach the point that we were once at with butterflies, but I think that if everyone gets involved and starts their own garden, they can make their own impact,” Jurman said. (Jurman说:“我不知道我们是否还能恢复到曾经与蝴蝶共处的那种状态,但我认为,如果每个人都参与进来,开始建造自己的花园,他们就能产生自己的影响。”)”可知,尽管未来充满不确定性,Jurman仍将继续坚持下去。故选C。

“Happy birthday, Dad,” I said, bringing out the quilt. Catching sight of the design on the quilt, he froze with his mouth wide open and throat tightened. His smile lit up his face, as if he had been waiting for me. Gently I put the quilt in his arms. My dad held the quilt close, saying, tears sparkling in his eyes, “This is the best gift I have received. I love you, baby. Thank you.” A wave of warmth came through my body. I hugged my dad tightly, saying in a guilty voice, “Please forgive me for not being able to see you early.”“It doesn’t matter! baby.” He said gently. “I’ll show you around your old bedroom.”
As I stepped into my old bedroom, I noticed some lovely butterfly pictures on the walls. When I was watching them, my dad said softly, “I’ve been collecting butterfly pictures over the years. I always hope you will come back home some day.” Touched by his words, I replied, “Dad, I’m here now . Let’s create new family memories together.”It’s love that removed misunderstanding between us, which I felt deep in my heart.
