第一节(共15小题:每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Jennifer Egan made her name with her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad, which was praised for its changing structure. The Candy House, Egan’s companion to Goon Squad, borrows its structure from Goon Squad and appears to be part of the trend for fiction based on interventions (干预) in human memory. In Goon Squad, the characters are trapped in the digital age and long to return to the past; in The Candy House, now firmly in the brave new world, the characters — many of whom we met in the earlier book — find that they can return.
But there’s one significant change: where Goon Squad was organized primarily around the music industry, The Candy House shifts its focus to tech. All the familiar technologies are present. But there’s also a new service, Own Your Unconscious. This allows users to upload their memories onto a device called the Consciousness Cube, where they can rewatch past experiences as if they were streaming TV, fast-forwarding through the boring bits or silencing the sound. They can edit these memories with MemoryShop software. They can also access other people’s memories in the Collective Consciousness.
The Candy House begins with Bix, who we last met in Goon Squad as a brilliant Black grad student in the early 1990s. Now it’s 2010, and Bix runs a social media empire. He’s a big noise, a Steve Jobs-like figure as famed for his style preferences as for his technological work.
But Bix has developed a fear. Like a novelist staring down the follow-up to the book that made him famous, Bix has become afraid that he won’t be able to make something else as good as his social media network was. He finds his way forward with the concept called the Collective Consciousness.
We live in an era of unprecedented (前所未有的) access to other people’s minds. Does this access — Egan asks, through the Collective Consciousness — actually make us better at understanding one another Or are we better off with the novel to connect with others
It probably won’t shock you that this novel comes down hard for novels as the winning option. Like Goon Squad before it, The Candy House more than makes its case.

Reducing calorie intake may lead to a thinner body and a longer life. People usually think it is because of weight loss and metabolic (新陈代谢) changes from eating less. But a recent study on diet limits in laboratory animals challenges this traditional view.
To study how diet works, researchers observed 960 mice. These mice were genetically different, like humans. Some mice had calorie-limited diets, some fasted (禁食的) regularly, and others ate as they liked. It was found that diets with restricted calories caused weight loss and metabolic changes. However, factors like immune health, genes, and the body’s ability to bear stress seem to better explain the link between fewer calories and a longer life.
Gary Churchill, a mouse researcher, said, “Metabolic changes are important, but they don’t directly lead to a longer life.” Other scientists think this shows how complicated the body’s response to calorie reduction.
Cutting calories by 40% made the mice live the longest on average. But fasting regularly and less strict calorie limits also increased lifespan (寿命). As is known, dieting mice have positive metabolic changes such as less body fat and lower blood sugar.
However, the effects of diet limits on metabolism and lifespan didn’t always go together. Surprisingly, mice that lost the most weight on a low-calorie diet sometimes died younger than those that lost less. This means that more than just metabolism affects how the body reacts to fewer calories. Immune health and red-blood-cell function were important for a longer life. Also, the body’s overall ability to handle stress was important.
The findings may change how scientists think about diet limits in humans. In a human trial of a low-calorie diet, researchers found that it reduced metabolic rates. But the mouse data suggests that metabolic measures may only show “health span”, not lifespan. Scientist Edmma notes that the study needs more evidence and warns not to directly use mouse results for humans, but he also admits that the study shows healthspan and lifespan are different.
8.How was the study conducted
A.By comparing mice with human beings.
B.By developing the feeding habits of mice.
C.By conducting experiment on different animals.
D.By adopting the controlled experiment method.
9.What surprising result does the study reveal
A.All mice live longer under diet restriction.
B.Dieting mice have positive metabolic changes.
C.Regular fasting have little impact on the lifespan of mice.
D.Mice with significant weight loss can have shorter lives.
10.What is scientist Edmma’s attitude toward the study
A.Cautious. B.Critical.
C.Optimistic. D.Uncaring.
11.What’s the best title for the text
A.Metabolism: The Key to a Longer Life
B.Less Food, Longer Life: The Simple Solution
C.Diet and Lifespan: It’s More than Metabolism
D.Calorie Restriction: Weight Loss and Metabolic Change

Last September, a strange seismic signal (地震信号), lasting more than a week, attracted the attention of researchers around the world. It took 68 experts from 15 countries to discover the cause of the “USO” -Unidentified Seismic Object.
The term USO is used informally by scientists for unusual seismic signals that can’t be explained, according to Kristian Svennevig, the lead author of a new report on this signal. From the start, scientists agreed this signal was not from an earthquake.
Svennevig compared earthquakes to hitting piano keys with force, creating a mix of sounds that disappeared quickly. However, the unusual signal was like a single piano key producing a clear sound that lasted for nine days.
Researchers tracked the signal to a huge snowslide in eastern Greenland’s Dickson fjord (峡湾), which was formed by melting (融化) ice due to climate change. Some 1.2 kilometers above the fjord, a mountaintop fell, driving more than 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice into the water-enough to fill 10,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The resulting tsunami (海啸) reached a height of 200 meters. The wave’s energy was caught in the rocky fjord, causing the water to move back and forth. This movement created the seismic signal.
Svennevig noted that understanding this event took time. Even when they had ideas about what happened, they needed more information and improved models to support their findings. “We could only show that the tsunami was caught and kept moving inside the fjord for nine days after we used special army maps and improved our tsunami models,” Svennevig explained.
To the researchers, the signal served as a wakeup call-similar events may happen with landfalls in other fjords or lakes due to climate change, which could lead to more landfalls and tsunamis in the Arctic. Understanding this event helps scientists learn more about how the Earth is changing due to global warming. There is still much to discover as we face the effects of climate change.
12.Why did Svennevig mention piano keys
A.To explain the strange signal. B.To introduce a musical instrument.
C.To compare the sounds in nature. D.To give tips on playing the piano.
13.What caused the seismic signal
A.A wildfire. B.A snowslide.
C.A heavy rain. D.An earthquake.
14.What can we know from Svennevig’s words
A.It’ll take much time to receive the seismic signal.
B.It’s slow for scientists to find an answer to the event.
C.A group of scientists was caught in the deadly tsunami.
D.The researchers will make public the recent finding soon.
15.What does the author stress in the text
A.Landfalls always happen along with tsunamis.
B.Scientists should keep an open mind on opinions.
C.This event may shape our view on various cultures.
D.The signal gives us fair warning of climate change.

Do What You Enjoy
Sometimes you may find that you are not happy in your life, although everything is going well. You have a job in your dream city. You exercise three times a week. You enjoy your holiday through some short trips. It seems life is so perfect that you have nothing to complain about. But inside you know you are not leading a life you want. You are fed up with your boss. You don’t want to repeat your yesterday today. You don’t want to waste your life on meaningless and boring things. Yon really want to change.
However, people around you say you should be satisfied and grateful because it is hard to find a job in recent years due to epidemic. Your parents won’t agree if you want to quit your job and then spend some time to find a new one. What matters most is that you don’t have enough courage. So most of the time you have to continue this kind of unhappy life, since it is really hard to make changes and move on to a new business, which often involves taking risks.
My father, however, was a quite different example. When I was about 9 or 10, he told me that I should be whatever I wanted when I grew up, so long as I enjoyed it. He said that if I were not feeling comfortable, I should try to change my life to make it more delightful, and I would find real pleasure as a result. From him I learned a great lesson on the value of doing one’s favorite.
My father got into the insurance industry when he was very young, and he was very successful. He became one of the company’s top salesmen, even though he was only 25 years old. Soon he became one of the first independent insurance salesmen in our state. However, he decided to leave his successful career and move on to other fields. You might wonder why he did so. The answer was simple: he liked to do something challenging, something that tested his strength and ability, especially in a way that is interesting.

52.范文
My father just wanted to have a try, and so he did. My father harbored a simple yet earnest desire: to take a leap of faith and explore new possibilities, and without hesitation, he embarked on that journey. After leaving the insurance company, he worked in social media and then in digital technology, which really attracted him. Of course he wasn’t successful in everything he tried, but he told me for certain that he did something he liked, and that he had the satisfaction of doing what he enjoyed. Leaving one’s comfortable life is not easy.
I’ve learned this from my father, and I can say no matter result is good or bad, it is worthwhile to do one’s favorite. I firmly believe that regardless of whether the outcome turns out to be favorable or not, devoting oneself to what one truly loves is an endeavor that is inherently valuable and meaningful. When we do something we love, it gives us extra motivation to meet our goals, which are associated with psychological well-being and health. As long as we have no regrets and give it a try, we are forced to push against ourselves. After all we all want to be where we are challenging ourselves.
