A
The covering veil of a Chinese bride is a piece of square-shaped red color silk which is usually decorated with designed peony or phoenix patterns. The meaning behind this tradition is that people believe a red covering veil can drive away the misfortune and also covers the nervous flushing face of the bride.
During the traditional Chinese wedding ceremony, the bride is handed by her groom. Her head should be covered by a red veil which is falling down to her shoulder for the whole ceremony. The covering veil is not taken off until all the relatives and friends have left. It is the g room who can take off her covering veil. Traditionally, the groom should take off her veil using a small steelyard (杆秤). Imagine the special and sweet moment when the groom takes the veil off and sees a blushing and excited face with the faint candle-light while they sit on the edge of the new bed. The bride’s covering veil is connected with the special occasion where the lovers are eager for their life.
In ancient China, the covering veil or gaitou was just a method to keep warm. It later turned into an accessory (配饰) for maids serving the emperor’s palace. Starting from the Yuan Dynasty, the bride covers her entire head with a piece of red cloth or gaitou to prevent herself from being seen by others on the wedding day, including the groom. This veil is only to be lifted up by the g room on the wedding night. For most of them in old China, it would be the first time they saw each other. The reason why the arm of the steelyard is used to lift the veil is that the Chinese character for this device also has the meaning of “satisfied” and thus, by using this device, the groom expresses that he would be completely satisfied with the look of the bride.
21.What is the meaning of the red covering veil in the wedding ceremony according to the custom
A.Getting rid of bad luck.
B.Attracting people’s curiosity about the bride.
C.Representing the bride’s loyalty to her family.
D.Adding a romantic atmosphere to the wedding.
22.What can we know about the traditional Chinese wedding ceremony according to the passage
A.The steelyard is used to measure the weight of the veil.
B.The bride’s red veil is removed by the groom using a steelyard.
C.In ancient China, the groom could see the bride’s face before the wedding.
D.Relatives and friends are present when the groom removes the bride’s veil.
23.Why would a steelyard be used to lift up the covering veil
A.It was deeply rooted in the palace. B.It reflected the groom’s expectation.
C.It stood for good luck and sweet life. D.It could be easily found in old times.
24.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Wedding Ceremonies in China’s History.
B.Things Used for a Traditional Chinese Wedding.
C.Wearing a Covering Veil on a Chinese Wedding.
D.Customs of Traditional Chinese Wedding Ceremonies.

Best Websites for Booking Cheap Flights
When it comes to booking flights, travelers may naturally head to an airline’s website. However, that’s not always the best choice. The best flight booking site can vary depending on your situation.Google Flights
For ease, speed and features, Google Flights is arguably the best website for flight searches. Search results appear almost immediately. Filters (过滤器) let you narrow down to nonstop choices, and limit by price or factor in the price of a bag. One downside is that it doesn’t always show the cheapest prices.Kayak
Perhaps the most important reason to use Kayak instead of Google Flights is that it can catch better deals. For example, we found a $550 round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Barcelona using Google Flights. Kayak found a way to lower that price to just $472.Capital One Travel
If you are a Capital One cardholder, Capital One Travel might just be the best choice as you can get up to $300 off travel booked through the Capital One Travel portal each cardholder year. Also, you’ll get up to a $50 credit toward future travel if the price drops within the next 10 days.Kiwi
Are you willing to book a trip as two separate tickets in order to save money That’s the idea behind Kiwi. It could mean taking a bus or train from your home city to another to catch a flight to your destination. But if a delay or cancellation causes you to miss your connection, the second airline/bus/train company won’t honor your ticket.
25.What is a disadvantage of Google Flights
A.It filters nonstop flights. B.It shows limited search results.
C.It does not show the price of a bag. D.It may not present the cheapest choices.
26.Which of the following offers credit card rewards
A.Google Flights. B.Kayak. C.Capital One Travel. D.Kiwi.
27.Where is the text probably from
A.An airline’s website. B.A finance journal.
C.A business magazine. D.A flight booking guide.

How to Be a Good Master of Ceremonies
A master of ceremonies (MC) is the host of an event, performance, or party. Their main job is to introduce speakers, make announcements, and keep the audience engaged to ensure the event runs smoothly. 31 We’ll guide you on how to prepare and perform your role perfectly.
Do your research on key event guests.
Acquire and study a guest list from the event organizers. 32 Use that information to prepare introductions for the speakers that are more personal and genuine.
Welcome the audience and thank them for coming.
Introduce yourself and welcome the attendees in your speech. Identify the specific groups of your audience (like special guests and the audience themselves), and welcome them individually. These welcomes don’t need to be long-winded, but they do need to be sincere. 33
Tailor (调整) your performance style to the event.
34 Being an MC means that you have a great sense of humor, you can work a crowd, and you’re a practiced public speaker. Memorize the major points you’ll need to hit, and consider your posture and hand gestures, which keep the audience more engaged. Also consider the event’s audience, and what sort of presenter they’d like to see — adjust your tone to be more serious or more casual accordingly.
35
Ask an event organizer for the dress code, and then punch it up a bit. If an event is casual, dress in slacks and a button-up or a smart dress. If an event is semi-formal, wear a nice jacket or more elegant gown. As the MC, you’re the most-seen person there, and it’s better to overdress than underdress.
A.Dress a little nicer than you need to.
B.Let your audience know who the speakers are.
C.Practice public speaking before the day of the gathering.
D.Smile, take a deep breath, and center yourself to remain calm.
E.Though it can be challenging, there are ways to succeed as an MC.
F.Tell everyone you’re glad they came, and remind them of the purpose of the event.
G.Contact or research your key speakers to find out some background information on them.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was pretty proud of my idea for a secret signal (信号) with my little sister Ariella.
“OK, Ariella, show me the signal,” I said, excited. She pinched (捏住) her nose. “Right! Whenever you see me at school, you do it.” Ariella nodded her head but asked, “Why do I have to do that when I see you ” “Well, it’s a cool way for a kid to say hi to her older brother,” I said firmly. Actually, I had decided it was the perfect way to avoid something really embarrassing, like a hug or a kiss, or hearing “I love you!” yelled in front of my friends.
At school, I didn’t see Ariella until gym class. At that time, our gym teacher, Mr. Schwartz, was showing us how many sit-ups he could do when Ariella and her classmates walked by and spotted me. Then she grabbed her nose. Mr. Schwartz frowned. “Young lady, this is a gym class after all. A little sweat isn’t a bad thing!” Frightened, Ariella dropped her hand. I nodded a quick hello, but Ariella didn’t notice.
The next time I saw Ariella was at lunch. Just as Mrs. Watson was offering a spoonful of spinach (菠菜) to Ariella, I was passing by to return my tray (托盘). Ariella saw me and pinched her nose again. “Does it smell that bad ” Mrs. Watson chuckled. Ariella hesitated, “But…” “It’s OK. I don’t love spinach either.” Mrs. Watson whispered. Ariella shot me a glare, and I mouthed “sorry.”
As the day was almost over, I was called to the principal’s office. My heart racing, I feared the signals had caused trouble. However, I was asked to take the bus permission slip (小纸条) to Ariella. She was listening to a story at her classroom. Upon arrival, I requested her teacher, Ms. Brown, to give her the note. At the sound of my voice, Ariella smiled and opened her mouth as if to speak. But instead, she made the signal. Pinch!
注意:
1.续写短文词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: To my great surprise, Ariella’s classmates copied her signal.

【原文】W: Welcome to the Roman baths. My name is Amanda and I’m your guide for today. If you don’t want to carry your coats and bags around with you, there is a coatroom behind the reception. Also, does anyone want to use the bathroom There’s one here in the reception hall, opposite the ticket office. OK, let’s begin our tour. The bath you can see from here is called the Great Bath, not very imaginative, but it is the biggest. The bath itself is 1.6 meters deep, ideal for bathing, and has steps leading down to the water on all sides. Let’s move on to the spring. This is in the heart of the site where the hot water comes from the ground at a temperature of 46℃. The water is rich in minerals and it’s said that it would cure various illnesses. Next, we will pass through the site of the temple. Here, we are. This temple is one of the only two known classical Roman temples in Britain. The other is the temple of Claudius at Colchester. This temple is said to have been built for centuries, and over time, due to serious damage caused by human activities, what you can see here are just bits of the original temple. Okay, let’s move on.

To my great surprise, Ariella’s classmates copied her signal. One by one, the kids around her began pinching their noses, their eyes darting between Ariella and me with a mix of curiosity and amusement. Almost instantly, the room erupted into a sea of pinched noses, with waves of laughter spreading. “Hush! Put down your fingers!” Ms. Brown looked puzzled and tried to figure out what story was behind this funny signal. As the class got quiet, Ariella explained, “It’s just the way I say hi to him. It’s our secret code for…” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “I love you!” All the kids started laughing all over again. My heart racing, I felt my face burning with embarrassment. I knew I had to escape the situation before it got worse, so I quickly turned and hurried out of the classroom.
After school, Ariella met me by the bus and begged. “Can we use a different signal tomorrow ” I looked at her, feeling guilty for the trouble our signal had caused. “Sure, we can come up with something else.” I said firmly. On the bus ride home, we started to brainstorm ideas, laughing and experimenting with different signals. Finally, I suggested, “How about a simple thumbs-up ” Ariella nodded, giving me a thumbs-up and I returned it with a subtle wink. I felt relieved that we had found a new signal, which wouldn’t make both of us embarrassed. It was a small change, but it showed how much I cared about my little sister. By the time we got home, we had practiced our new signal, which was simple but ours. It dawned on me that no matter what signal we used, what mattered most was the love and connection it represented. From then on, I decided to be more open to Ariella’s love in front of friends. Maybe a simple hello or a hug wasn’t so bad after all.
