The smell of fried rice fills the air as you sit around the family table. But instead of sharing stories, everyone’s eyes are fixed on their phones. This is becoming common in Chinese families. A survey shows 68% of Hangzhou teenagers check social media during meals. Does this habit hurt our real-life relations
Screen Time vs Family Time
Studies show that no-phone dinners improve relationships. When a phone is placed face down, people make 20% more eye contact according to Peking University researchers. Simple acts like passing dishes or laughing at grandparents’ stories create warmth that WeChat stickers (表情包) can’t replace.
The “Fear of Missing Out” Trap
Many teenagers argue they need to check phones for fear of missing latest news. But Dr. Li from Zhejiang University warns, “FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) actually makes people more worried. Those endless group talking will still be there after dinner.” Interestingly, 54% of students in a Hangzhou No. 2 High School study agreed that they felt more relaxed after phone-free meals.
Finding the Balance
Completely stopping phone use may cause arguments. Why not try small steps Some families create “tech baskets” to collect phones during meals. Others allow 5-minute phone checks after eating main courses. The key is to treat real conversations as the main dish, and phone time as just side dishes.
When you finish today’s dinner, take a moment to think: Will I remember the funny videos watched alone, or the laughter shared with family over home-made dishes
12.What’s the writer’s main purpose in Paragraph 2
A.To compare different dining habits
B.To show benefits (好处) of phone-free dinners
C.To explain how eye contact works
D.To discuss popular social media apps
13.The word “FOMO” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A.fear of making offline friends B.worry about missing online information
C.joy from family gatherings D.stress about school exams
14.What does the author want to show by using “side dishes” in Paragraph 4
A.To show that phones can make meals more enjoyable
B.To explain that family talks should be the main focus
C.To prove that technology is unnecessary in daily life
D.To suggest that desserts should be eaten after phones

根据“interested...everything about nature.”
follow跟随,动词;根据“Her sister Gen, is always...her around.”
根据“The four students are not friends...one of them gets caught in a well.”
big大的,形容词;根据“Chet Bullens is the...bully”可知,前面有the,这里用形容词最高级,所以填big的最高级形式“biggest”,故填biggest。
they他们,主格;根据“try...best to save”可知,这里考查固定短语try one’s best“尽某人最大努力”,因为主语是Valencia, Tanaka, and Gen,复数,所以物主代词用their。故填their。
friend朋友,名词;根据“about the...between four kids.”
child儿童,名词;根据“the highest award in the field of literature (文学) for...”

Screen Time vs Family Time

When you finish today’s dinner, take a moment to think: Will I remember the funny videos watched alone, or the laughter shared with family over home-made dishes
