Novelist and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi remembers only bits and pieces of the day in 2022 when his life changed forever. He recalls being sick with a stomach infection and starting to feel faint (昏眩) and then his memory got unclear. Looking back, Kureishi says, he likely stood up to walk, and then fell flat on his face, breaking his neck.
Kureishi says when he woke up, he was in a pool of blood. He could speak, but he was unable to move his hands or other parts of his body. He spent a year in hospital before he was able to return home, where he was assisted by 24-hour caregivers.
“In the beginning, there was a lot of anger,” he says. “Your ordinary life was taken away from you by an illness — as will happen to so many of us — you are absolutely angry. And you become angry with the people around you. You become angry with your life.”
Kureishi was nominated (提名) for an Oscar for his screenplay of the 1985 film My Beautiful Launderette. He went on to more films and books, including the 1990 novel The Buddha of Suburbia. Kureishi started writing his new life story, Shattered, just days after the break by dictating (口述) the story to his wife and his son. In it, he describes being completely dependent on others, feeling helpless and ashamed.
But he says writing about his condition also gives him purpose. Even though he can’t use his fingers to hold something or pick up a pen or anything like that, he is writing a blog every single day about his condition. He feels stronger than he was. Now he is writing another book. He is very excited about what he is doing, and he gets up in the morning and looks forward to the day, thinking what he is going to do today and whether it is going to be exciting.
1. What happened to Kureishi in 2022
A. He lost his memory.
B. He suffered an accident.
C. He had his face broken.
D. He got a sudden stomachache.
2. Which of the following best describes Kureishi

C. Productive and carefree.
D. Fearful and disheartened.
3. What can be the best title for the text

An experiment in central Mexico brings hope for the important winter habitat of millions of moving monarch butterflies (帝王蝶). When scientists planted hundreds of young oyamel firs (冷杉) about 100 kilometers from their native habitat, they weren’t sure how many trees would survive. Today, researchers report in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change that most are growing well. Even at 3,800 meters above sea level, high above where they usually grow, nearly 70% of the young trees have survived at least three years.
Every fall, monarch butterflies move from southern Canada to the mountains of central Mexico. They sleep through the winter only on the oyamel firs. Thousands might gather on a single branch. However, the forests and the butterflies are in peril. Monarch butterflies’ populations continue to drop, and due to climate change, oyamel firs are expected to almost disappear by 2090.
“We need to move the forests to a higher location,” says Cuauhtémoc Sáenz-Romero, a forest geneticist in Mexico. Oyamel firs, growing between 2,400 and 3,500 meters, need cold mountain air to survive. The cold at higher places also slows the metabolism (新陈代谢) of butterflies, making them survive the long winter. As central Mexico gets warmer, new generations of oyamel firs will likely be moved higher.
Sáenz-Romero’s team collected oyamel fir seeds from 3,100 to 3,500 meters in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and grew them in a nursery (苗圃). They planted around 960 trees at four locations on the Nevado de Toluca volcano. Three years later, the higher location the trees were planted at, the smaller and shorter they were. However, many survived their first year, indicating long-term survival.
Turning the experiment into reality would face many challenges, including getting the community’s and government’s support. And even if the trees can survive, another question remains: Will the monarch butterflies find them During the winter of 2023-2024, some large monarch groups didn’t sleep through the winter in the reserve.
4. What do we know about the experiment of planting oyamel fir trees
A. It would benefit monarch butterflies’ habitat.
B. It would help monarch butterflies fly farther.
C. It focused on the monarch butterflies’ food.
D. It was carried out by Mexican locals every fall.
5. What does the underlined word “peril” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Harmony. B. Balance.
C. Danger. D. Safety.
6. What message does the author want to express in the last paragraph
A. More butterflies are supposed to be needed.
B. There are uncertainties about monarch butterflies.
C. Moving oyamel firs to higher places proves hopeless.
D. The government should provide more oyamel fir seeds.
C
You may remember the things you were told as a child about watching too much TV. In the UK, parents may even tell their kids their eyes will turn square!
Now, a new review of more than two decades of research into the impact of screen time on the brains of young children has found no evidence of square eyes. But the researchers have decided that screen time does have a significant and lasting impact.
A team from universities in Asia and Australia examined 33 studies that used neuroimaging (神经影像) or images of the brain to review the effect of screen time on the brains of children up to the age of 12. This included playing video games, watching television and using other electronic equipment.
The team found that screen time can lead to changes in a number of different parts of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层), which has been called our “personality center”. The prefrontal cortex controls things like working memory and the ability to make plans and respond to situations. Screen time has also been found to affect the temporal lobe (颞叶), which deals with memory and language.
The research also noticed that children who use tablets to watch TV and play video games may be worse at problem-solving tasks, while playing a lot of video games and using the Internet for long periods of time were found to affect intelligence scores.
In response to the results, one of the study’s authors, Hui Li, said that limiting screen time is not the only answer. He said this could be effective, but it may also cause arguments. He suggested using other friendly and practical ways, and encouraged teachers and parents to give advice to young people based on the latest research.
7. What is the main purpose of the study mentioned in the text
A. To explore the history of screen time among children.
B. To show how long children use electronic equipment.
C. To understand how screen time affects children’s brains.
D. To prove that watching TV causes children’s square eyes.
8. How did researchers prove the effects of screen time on children
A. Through long-term behavioral studies.
B. By tracking their performance in school.
C. Through different types of video games.
D. By using brain network and function data.
9. Which of the following may Hui Li agree with
A. Students must be forced not to use mobile phones.
B. Parents should allow children to use mobile phones.
C. Teachers and parents should say no to mobile phones.
D. Children are supposed to develop meaningful hobbies.
10. Where is this passage most likely taken from
A. A science magazine. B. A travel brochure.

A. Despite tough conditions, they solved key problems like creating the nuclear power system and the submarine’s shape. They built China’s first nuclear submarine, the Long March 1, which was launched in 1970. This made China the fifth country in the world to have nuclear submarines.
B. Huang Xuhua is a key figure in China’s nuclear submarine (核潜艇) program. He was born in 1926 in Shanwei City, Guangdong Province. From a young age, he wanted to help his country through science. In 1958, he was secretly called to Beijing to work on nuclear submarines and lived under a false name for 30 years.
C. Throughout his life, Huang Xuhua did not seek fame or wealth. He often donated his money and awards to research and education institutions. He set up the “Huang Xuhua Science and Technology Innovation Award Fund” to inspire future generations. He showed the spirit of self-reliance, hard work, teamwork, and selfless giving. He is a role model for all of us.
D. At that time, China had no technology for nuclear submarines and faced strict blockades (封锁) from other countries. Huang Xuhua and his team had to start from nothing, using simple tools like abacuses (算盘) and slide rules for complex calculations. They even used scales to weigh parts to make sure the submarine’s weight was balanced.
E. In 1988, Huang Xuhua himself took part in a deep dive test for the nuclear submarine, becoming the first chief designer in the world to do so. His actions inspired all the research staff and helped ensure the test was a success.
