The best electric bikes of the year
If you’re looking for a way to travel to work or do your shopping without using your car—and paying at the pump—then one of the best electric bikes could be your answer. These battery-powered bicycles have a little motor that can give you an extra boost when you need it.
We’ve tested a number of the top models to give you the best recommendations for all kinds of electric bikes.
1. Aventon SolteraSPECIFICATIONSBattery: Phylion Lithium-Ion 36V, 10Ah with LG cells (removable) Max estimated range: 20 to 63 miles, depending on assist setting Max assisted speed: 20 mph
REASONS TO BUY:
● Impressive comfort
● Easy to read head unit
● Throttle (油门) is helpful getting the bike going from a dead stop
If you’re looking for a low-cost electric bike to get you around town, this is definitely a model to consider. However, the Soltera’s rear hub motor does feel a little underpowered, especially on hills.
2. Aventon AventureSPECIFICATIONSBattery: 720 Wh Max estimated range: 45 miles Max assisted speed: 28 mph REASONS TO BUY ● Flexible power with pedal assist and full throttle modes ● Excellent color LCD controller
If you’re looking for a fat-tire electric bike that’s less than $2,000, the Aventon Aventure is hard to beat. It’s as good off-road as it is on pavement, has a beefy battery and a clear color display, as well as fenders (挡泥板) that’ll save your clothes from getting too muddy. What’s more, the battery can be removed for charging. While not as capable as a dedicated mountain bike, the Aventure was able to get us up and over hilly terrain, though there was a minor disadvantage in the power boost.
3. Charge Bikes CitySPECIFICATIONSBattery: 418Wh (unremovable) Max estimated range: 50 miles REASONS TO BUY ● Excellent handling ● Complete set of features
If you plan on commuting (通勤) to work, Charge Bikes City may well be the best ebike for you. Not only does it come with features like full-fenders to keep the mud off and a rear rack for a pack or bag, but it does everything well for a very reasonable price. It comes with all the necessary bells and whistles a commuter is going to want, including a very loud electronic horn. The bike is available in both step-over and step through, and in a few color options, too.
21.What do Aventon Soltera and Aventon Aventure have in common
A.Both of them have fenders to keep the mud off.
B.Both of them provide color options.
C.Their batteries can be removed for charging.
D.Both of them can cover 50 miles.
22.Who is the most likely target buyer of Charge Bikes City
A.Ivory: a young girl who is keen on outdoor activities.
B.Tom: a new employee whose work place is 20km away.
C.Bruce: an 89-year-old man who lives with his daughter.
D.Lucy: a single mother with two daughters who works in a bike shop.
23.Which of the following details about Aventon Aventure is right
A.It has a clear color display matching your clothes well.
B.It is best choice among the electric bikes less than $2,000.
C.It is capable mountain bike suiting all hilly terrain.
D.It has a shortcoming in power boost.
In casual conversations, government documents, and formal job interviews, there is a seemingly simple question I can never answer without hesitating: “Where are you from ”
I could say I am from Japan—I was born there, after all. Or, should I say I am from the United States, whose culture, philosophy, and language are deeply rooted in my life In my mind, none of these answers are satisfying enough. I gave in to this constant sense of sadness, until very recently.
Inside my drawer is a simple, white bath towel that I have not used since I brought it from my parents’ house last summer. On an ordinary evening, I took it out to take a bath, but stopped after the soft, sweet, artificial smell of laundry detergent (洗涤剂) that my parents used back in Japan floated into my nose. I felt my eyes water as that random smell brought my mixed emotions to the surface: sadness, loneliness, and nostalgia. It’s silly, but I still avoid using that towel to this day because I don’t want to replace the smell of nostalgia with my Tide detergent.
A similar thing happened when I was walking through a supermarket. Somehow being in the vegetable section, with the smells of raw vegetables and some unidentifiable spices, brought up the broad strokes of a memory from when I lived in California. That smell took me back to an open market my father always loved to go to. Anytime I come across that “vegetable smell,” I can blurrily (模糊地) picture the green plastic crates with onions, savory spices, and people’s voices. I don’t know the name of that market, where it was, or if it even exists now, but I can remember that it always brought a sense of comfort.
Though, I still struggle when answering where I am from, in random moments, when a smell hits me with the memories it brings, I like to believe the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home. Myself, my “home,” are still split, but I am lucky enough to feel like I am “at home” in these brief moments.
24.What is the main challenge the author faces when asked “Where are you from ”
A.She has never lived in a single country.
B.She feels conflicted about her cultural identity.
C.She dislikes talking about her background.
D.She doesn’t understand the question.
25.What does the underlined word “nostalgia” mean in the third paragraph
A.Depression. B.Homesickness. C.Embarrassment. D.Thrill.
26.The “vegetable smell” in the supermarket reminds the author of ____________.
A.her current cooking habits
B.a specific market from her past in California
C.her desire to become a chef
D.the differences between Japanese and American markets
27.In the last paragraph, the author suggests that “home” is______________.
A.a fixed geographical location
B.a connection to birthplace
C.an emotional experience that can occur briefly
D.something that can only be found in one’s native country
Every Wednesday, retiree Zhang Zhili travels an hour by bus to an education center, drawn by the pulsing rhythms of the African drum she plays there in a classroom filled with fellow retirees whose hands move together, every beat lifting her spirits.
Many older Chinese are looking beyond traditional nursing homes, afraid of abandonment by their families and quality issues. That’s driving a boom in universities, home care services, and communities catering to older adults. Though some providers struggle to turn a profit, they persist because they see promise in the growing market.
China has a rapidly aging population. Last year, about 297 million people were aged 60 or above, over one-fifth of the population. By 2035, this number is forecast to go beyond 400 million, or over 30% of all Chinese.
That’s fueling growth in services and products aimed at older adults in what Beijing calls the silver economy, which is expected to grow from about 7 trillion yuan (about $982 billion) currently to approximately 30 trillion yuan (about $4.2 trillion) in 2035, raising its share in the economy from about 6% to roughly 10%, Hu Zuquan, a researcher at the State Information Center, a public institution linked to with China’s main planning agency, told state media. The government is expanding basic care services to all elderly people in need, moving beyond its traditional focus on those without family support.
Various companies are looking to grab a slice of this government-backed market. Property developers like Vanke Co. and Sino-Ocean Group and insurance companies such as Taikang Insurance Group have built high-end communities for older adults with amenities such as movie-screening and mahjong rooms and dining services.
Still, questions remain about the spending power of many older Chinese. China’s silver economy is still in its early stage, said Gary Ng, a senior economist at Natixis Corporate and Investment Banking. “There are prospects here, but it seems there’s still much that needs to be done,” he said.
28.What can be inferred about Zhang Zhili from the first paragraph
A.She seeks joy and socializes with others.
B.She learns a new skill and prepares for future employment.
C.She struggles with loneliness and relies on her family for support.
D.She prioritizes exercise and improves her physical health.
29.What is the main reason for the rise of the silver economy
A.China’s rapidly aging population creating market demand.
B.Technological advancements in elderly care products.
C.Government restrictions on traditional nursing homes.
D.A cultural shift toward valuing individualism over family care.
30.What did Gary Ng think about China’s silver economy
A.It has already reached maturity and requires no further investment.
B.It faces challenges with rural gaps and unstable profits.
C.It targets urban wealthy and ignores ordinary seniors.
D.It shows potential but significant efforts remain necessary.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the article
A.The Challenges of Silver Economy in China
B.The Reason for Silver Economy in Chinese Society
C.The Impact of the Silver Economy in China
D.The Rise of the Silver Economy in China
The rise of generative AI by Western firms like OpenAI and Anthropic has concentrated technological power. Much like the early industrial revolutions, the development of AI appeared to have promoted us into an era where only a handful of firms — armed with vast source of funding, specific data, and deep-seated ecosystems — are set to dominate the market. However, it is challenged by DeepSeek, a new player, claiming its R1 reasoning model was developed at a fraction of the typical cost — $5-6 million versus hundreds of millions.
This breakthrough depends on targeted optimizations (优化): mixed-precision arithmetic (算术), GPU load balancing, and YaRN context extension. These innovations reduce computational demands, potentially lowering barriers to AI development. Critically, DeepSeek’s approach builds on prior research and development fundamentals by Western firms. Open-source frameworks pioneered by well-funded labs enabled DeepSeek to refine existing technologies rather than starting from scratch.
While its cost-efficiency could democratize (使民主化) AI by empowering startup companies, significant risks accompany its model. Security analysts warn that DeepSeek’s promises of impressive performance and low operational costs come with heightened risks. Critics have raised alarm bells around security, warning that its cost-effective, open-source design appears to come at the cost of strong safeguards — making it notably easy to generate harmful, insecure, or biased outputs. Studies suggest it produces harmful content at higher rates than Western models and collects sensitive user data (e.g. IP addresses) stored on Chinese servers, raising privacy concerns.
Policymakers face a dual reality: DeepSeek breaks the assumption that AI dominance requires vast fund, yet its operational model introduces ethical dilemmas. The key to solving the problem lies in balancing competition with safety standards. Market strategies may shift toward efficiency-driven, open-source cooperation. Ultimately, DeepSeek’s emergence highlights a tension — democratizing AI while reducing risks of insecure outputs.
In an era of rapidly evolving AI economics, DeepSeek’s breakthrough may serve as a catalyst (催化剂) for a broader, more inclusive technological revolution — one where competition, rather than concentration, defines success.
32.What is the key breakthrough claimed by DeepSeek in AI development
A.Reducing computational demands significantly.
B.Building its AI system with a substantially lower cost.
C.Creating a new form of mixed-precision arithmetic.
D.Balancing GPU load more efficiently than previous models.
33.Which of the following statement is TRUE about DeepSeek regarding data practices
A.It refuses to share research with Western companies.
B.Its models require expensive user subscriptions.
C.It collects sensitive data stored on Chinese servers.
D.It has strong safeguards to avoid generating harmful outputs.
34.What dilemma do policymakers face regarding AI development
A.Balancing technological competition with safety standards.
B.Choosing between funding startups and established firms.
C.Prioritizing data collection over user privacy.
D.Promoting closed-source over open-source models.
35.Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage
A.The rise of generative AI by Western firms has led to market domination.
B.DeepSeek faces criticism over its potential security risks.
C.DeepSeek introduces a new era of AI democratization.
D.DeepSeek challenges traditional AI development with a cost-efficient model.
The first response in any emergency is to provide the necessary first aid for the injured person while waiting for emergency medical services. 36 If left unattended, the victim could lose his/her life. Different types of injuries and health emergencies require distinct first aid procedures.
For cuts and bleeding, the first step is to apply direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth or bandage to promote clotting (凝血) and stop the bleeding. 37 . And it should be applied with caution due to the risk of tissue damage.
38 For a conscious person, perform the Heimlich maneuver by standing behind him/her, placing your fist just above his/her stomach, and delivering quick, upward push-ups until the object is forced out. Note that the Heimlich maneuver is only for conscious individuals; CPR is required for unconscious choking victims.
In case of sprains, use the RICE method—Rest, Ice, Compression (压迫), and Elevation. After resting the injured area and applying ice to reduce swelling, it’s important to provide additional support. 39
Whenever a loved one becomes a victim of these emergencies, you will do everything to save his/her life. 40 To be prepared for various emergencies and assist individuals with injuries or health crises, it’s essential to enroll in first aid and CPR certification courses.
A.If the bleeding is heavy, use a tight bandage only if nothing else works.
B.Wrap the injured area with a bandage and keep it elevated.
C.Basic first aid knowledge is important because accidents can happen anywhere.
D.If someone is unable to speak, cough, or breathe, immediate action is essential.
E.However, you wouldn’t be able to help the victim without the necessary skills.
F.First aid is used to help preserve the lives of victims in specific health emergencies.
G.Make sure to clean the wound with alcohol before applying pressure.

The camp’s diving board (跳水板) loomed over Ethan, making his stomach churn (搅动). His palms were sweaty as he shuffled forward in the line of campers. The instructor’s voice boomed, “Everyone jumps today, or no certificate (证书)!” Ethan’s throat tightened. Seven years ago, a near-drowning in a lake had filled his mind with fear — dark water swallowing his screams, lungs burning for air. Now, at fourteen, he was trapped again.
The boy ahead of him, Jake, leapt off the board with a whoop, slicing into the water like a knife. The crowd cheered, but Ethan barely heard them. His legs turned to lead. What if I froze What if they laughed Last week, his little sister looked up at him with wide eyes and said, “You’re my hero, Ethan.” But he was not a hero. He gripped the railing (栏杆), staring at the lake’s surface — it mirrored dark clouds, turning like a storm in the sky today.
A hand clapped his shoulder. “Your turn, Ethan,” Coach Miller said gently. The man’s eyes held no judgment, only quiet encouragement. Ethan forced one foot onto the board. It creaked, swaying under his weight. Below, the water seemed to yawn wider, hungry. His childhood nightmare flashed: arms and legs struggling, bubbles rising as he sank…
“Breathe, kid,” Coach murmured. “Fear’s just a bully. Face it, and it backs down.” Ethan’s fingers trembled, but he took another step. The board dipped. Maybe I can…

Reading habits look different around the world. In India, the average person devotes 10 hours to reading per week — which is five hours more than the average person spends in the US. What people choose to read also varies depending on their geographic location. Scientists in Switzerland looked at international Google search numbers to determine the most popular book types in countries where data was available. According to search trends, American readers prefer the classics to other popular categories. Book lovers in New Zealand and Ireland are also searching for older books that tend to be taught in literature classes. In Latin America, horror and romance are the most popular genres. Scary books dominate in Mexico and Argentina, and love stories win over readers in Brazil. Fantasy is another popular one read round the world, coming out on top in Italy, Germany, and Poland. No matter what your choice is, reading is a great way to feel well-traveled without leaving home. Scientists have summarized 10 benefits of reading.

66.Dear Henry,
How are you Last week, I visited an Ancient Art Exhibition Of China. The highlight was a colorful mural painting of a lady wearing a flowing red dress with golden patterns, playing the pipa and her fingers lightly touching the strings. Behind her, cherry blossoms feels like pink snow—so poetic! Despite its long history, it looks as fresh and full of life as the day it was created.
Looking at the face of the lady in the mural painting, I felt history was brought to life. A small taste of ancient Chinese art as it was, I was deeply moved by the great skills craftsmen showed in creating these beautiful pieces.
If you visit China, let’s explore them together!
Yours,
Li Hua
67.The first raindrop hit his cheek as Ethan inched toward the trembling edge. Raindrops began to patter, mixing with his sweat. “Thirty seconds, Ethan!” Jake called. Mock or motivate He wasn’t sure. Taking a deep breath, he tried to keep calm as Coach had taught. One step. Another. The edge was inches away. The water below hissed like a snake, threatening to swallow him. Jump or run His lungs seized/ His throat tightened. Then, a memory surfaced — his little sister’s voice last week: “You’re my hero, Ethan.” Determined, gritting his teeth, he jumped forward.
The water was colder than expected, but the darkness never came. Sunlight shone through the water, making the bubbles sparkle as he kicked upward. Breaking the surface, he gasped — not from panic, but exhilaration. The lakeside exploded with cheers. “You did it!” Jake yelled loudest. Shortly after, clutching his certificate, Ethan came to realize, “True courage isn’t fearlessness. It’ s choosing to jump despite all the fear.” Glancing at the board, now glowing in the sun after the storm, he cracked a smile. The water still scared him... but no longer controlled him.
