I am a reporter of China Daily. Today, I decide to write about some challenges when trying to learn just a
little Putonghua.
When I remember words in pinyin, I'm amazed that most of the words are no more than four letters,
which may be easy for speaking but actually doesn’t help with memory. The simpleness makes a lot of words
seem similar, in fact, they're not. Even the same word may have 20 different meanings, not to mention the
changes created by the four tones(音调)!
Another thing about pinyin is that an English speaker can pronounce most of the sounds just as he or she
would speak English. But when he or she meets “he” (huh) or “zi” (zuh) or “qi” (chur), it becomes difficult.
Don’t even try those words if you can’t pronounce them well.
In the newsroom, I try to learn the Chinese that I usually hear: tou ban (page 1), hao le (it’s done), fa le ba
(send it). My goal is to not cause lots of laughter when I try something in Chinese, but let the Chinese listener
guess the pronunciation after a three-to-four-second stop.
I also find an interesting thing. That is an English speaker who has learnt Putonghua well can’t
understand Cantonese(广东话). Sure, people from New York, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta all have different
accents(口音), but we can understand each other for the most part.
34. From Paragraph 2, we can know .
A. The writer can both pronounce Chinese words and remember them
B. The writer can neither pronounce Chinese words nor remember them
C. The writer finds it not easy to pronounce Chinese words in pinyin
D. The writer finds it not easy to remember Chinese words in pinyin
35. Which of the following words best describes the writer’s feeling in the last paragraph
A. excited B. tired C. surprised D. bored
36.What does the article mainly tell us
A. Something happens when an English speaker studies Putonghua.
B. It’s difficult for an English speaker to learn Putonghua very well.
C. An English speaker can understand Putonghua better than Cantonese.
D. Some words have many different meanings and tones in Putonghua.
37. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Making My Way to Putonghua B. Reasons for Learning Putonghua
C. Teaching others to learn Putonghua D. Suggestions on Learning Putonghua

I(Robinson) was now in my twenty-seventh year on the island, and I did not want to be there for another
year. One evening Friday went out to look for food. But in less than an hour he came back with fear.
“Master! Master!” he cried. “There’s a great ship near the island, and men are coming to the shore in a
boat!”
I ran with him down to the shore. It was an English ship! We were careful not to be seen.
There were eleven men in the boat, but three of them were prisoners. Their arms were tied with rope, but
their legs were free and they could walk. The other sailors pushed the three prisoners up the beach. Then some of them sat down on the sand and began to drink. Others walked away to look at the island, and two men

stayed to watch the boat. The three prisoners walked slowly along the beach and sat down under a tree, not far
from us. They looked very unhappy.
Very quietly, I came up behind them through the trees, and called out to them in English.
“Don’t be afraid,” I said. “I’m an Englishman. Perhaps I can help you.”
The three men turned and looked at me. They did not answer at once, they were too surprised. Perhaps
they thought I was a wild man. Then the oldest man spoke.
“I am the captain of that ship,” he said, “last night there was a mutiny(叛乱), and the seamen took the
ship from me. Now they’re going to leave the three of us here, to die on this island.”
“Do these mutineers(反叛者) have guns ”
“Only two,” he answered, “and they’ve left those on the boat.”
“All right,” I said. “We’ll fight them, but if we get your ship back for you, you must take me back to
England.”
The captain agreed immediately and thanked me very warmly for my help. Friday ran back to my house
to get all the guns, and the captain and I made a plan.

A. the seamen B. the guns C. the prisoners D. the foods
39. Robinson decided to help the captain, because .
A. the captain was also an Englishman B. he wanted to go back to England
C. he had great pity on the captain D. he wanted to get the ship from the captain

C.fourteen men came to the island D.the captain knew Robinson before
41.What do you think would happen next

Have you heard the latest buzz(蜂鸣)?Bumblebees have.According to a new study, trends can pass
through a bumblebee colony (族群)as bees watch and copy one another's behavior. This means the bees have
a culture, which is a set of shared behaviors animals learn from one another.People once thought humans were
the only species to develop cultures, but chimpanzees and some birds have also been found to have this ability.
A research team from the UK set up puzzle boxes that offered a sweet﹣tasting reward when opened.
"Demonstrator"(演示者)bees were taught to open the boxes by pushing a red tab or a blue tab. Some "
Observer" (观察者)bees saw the demonstrator bees open the boxes, while other bees were not allowed to
watch before trying to open the boxes themselves.
The group of bees that had watched a demonstrator were able to open the puzzle boxes about 28 times a day, while the other group opened them only once a day.The observer bees almost always used the same method as the demonstrators did.For example, those who watched a bee open a box using the red tab almost
always pushed the red tab as well.
"Some of them would play around with the box and nd another way,but they still would return really
strongly to the demonstrator's preferred behavior," Alice Bridges, the lead author of the study, told The
Washington Post. She said the bees were developing "a local trend."
Even when the researchers allowed groups of bees to see both methods, each group soon developed its
own trend.A skill was passed along as new bees learned from more experienced bees. After several days, one
colony came to prefer the "blue method",while the other almost always chose the "red method."
"The fact that bees can watch and learn, and then make a habit of that behavior, adds to the fact that they
第 5 页 共 8 页
are far smarter creatures than a lot of people have thought," said study co﹣author Lars Chittka.
42.How does the scientists explain their findings about the bumblebees?
A.By introducing some rules. B.By mentioning achievements in others' studies.
C.By listing a lot of numbers. D.By making comparisons in different experiments.
43.What does the underlined phrase "a local trend" mean?
A.A bumble bee colony. B.The blue method.
C.A set of shared behaviors. D.The red method.
44.What can we learn from bumblebees according to the passage?
A.The observer bees could open the box only once a day.
B.Some bees would play around with the box and fly away.
C.The bees who watched a bee open a box using the red tab may prefer the red method.
D.The bees who watched both methods would use both red and blue tabs to open the box.
45.What is the most suitable title for the passage?
A.A Recent Study on Different Bees B.A Culture among Bumblebees
C.How do Bumblebees Make a Buzz D.Why Bumblebees Live as a Colony

五、阅读表达(共 5 小题;每小题 2,计 10 分,每题答案不超过 10 个词)
Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all,we can't win all the
time. However,we can learn something valuable from every failure (失败).This may help us succeed in the
future. So we must know how to be a good loser.
We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of
it.Failure can't be avoided in our life.Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb (灯泡).
When he was asked how he felt,he said that he hadn't failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things
which didn't work.We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success
although they failed many times.
Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it.Remember
that it can be helpful.Take action to walk out of it.When we lose, think about what we did and how we can
improve. If someone else can help, we'll be lucky enough.Maybe he or she has been through the same
experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning
how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while
第 6 页 共 8 页
some lose. That is a usual way of life.If we offer the winners our congratulations (祝贺) and share in their
happiness,we won't feel sorry for our failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life.It might be painful at the beginning, but there
are many advantages.Good losers set examples to us,and most importantly, they finally win.
56.What can we learn from every failure according to the text?

I'm Jack. I’m helpful and generous. I often help my classmates with their homework. Helping

I like reading. I think reading is so useful that it opens up my mind. While reading, I feel like
communicating with the writer closely. I learn a lot from books.
I’m not good at pronouncing English words. Sometimes I read the words incorrectly and my
classmates laugh at me. So I hope our English teacher will help me improve my pronunciation.
I want to make friends with all of you. If something worries you, you can always come to me.
I’ll try my best to cheer you up.
