Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogy (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad ” He tearfully asked me.
The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive and communicate with the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own; the first to impact him with the mix of tragedy and joy.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him.
Once our discussion ended, Henry requested to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects.
We both agree it is worth the wait. Roz leaves the island again to stop an underwater threat: “the poison tide.” Brown expertly balances between breathtaking adventure and unsettling ideas- not just happiness and sadness, but also, given the climate-change undercurrents, hope and despair.
And, here’s something special about Roz: her physical clumsiness and confusion about life, conveyed through her expressive eyes and down-turned mouth. Her story reflects the challenges of surviving in a strange place, much like a child’s journey. Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they learn alongside her. Roz gave Henry the power to push through the first book’s sad parts, getting him ready to appreciate that, sometimes, sadness isn’t a bad thing to feel.
24. What made the author read The Wild Robot
A. Its tragic ending. B. Its attractive cover.
C. Henry’s emotional response to it. D. Henry’s tearful recommendation.
25. How was the trilogy different from books Henry had read
A. It referred to the topic of robots. B. It expressed complicated feelings.
C. It prevented an underwater threat. D. It described the scene of an island.
26. What makes Roz in the trilogy special
A. Her robotic power. B. Her adventurous spirit.
C. Her strange expressions. D. Her struggling experiences.
27. What does the author want to convey to us
A. Misfortune inspires great literary works.
B. Robot stories work like magic on children.
C. Reading tragedies facilitates personal growth.
D. Book discussions help kids survive tragedies.

At dusk and dawn, the sky dances with three phases of in-between light. When the sun has just set in the west, the sky changes from the vibrant blue of afternoon to a more relaxed tone, as if it’s settling down for the evening. Soon the east will darken even as the west goes through an abundance of reds, oranges and yellows. And then, at last, the black of night will reign once again. Astronomers are so familiar with twilight that we’ve classified its various stages.
The first that occurs after sunset is called civil twilight, so named because when the sun is just below the horizon, the sky is still bright enough for people to conduct typical “daytime” outdoor activities. This is also when you’re likely to see the most colors in the sky toward the west. Those same molecules (微粒) that distribute sunlight don’t do so randomly; the angle of distributing depends on the color of the light. All the blue light from the sun is sent away in all directions, leaving only the redder colors to shine through, thus creating those breathtaking sunsets.
The next phase is nautical twilight, when the sun is between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon. The sky maybe a deep purple, and stars begin to appear. The term “nautical twilight” came about because sailors used the stars to get their bearings, and it’s at this time of the early evening that celestial navigation (天文导航) becomes possible.
After that comes astronomical twilight. This is when the sun is 12 to 18 degrees below the horizon and the sky finally appears black, with the stars truly shining. We call it astronomical twilight because it may look dark to your eye, but through a telescope, the sky is still bright enough to intervene in some observations.
This last phase of twilight concludes once the sun drops below 18 degrees; the sky becomes fully dark, and it is time for astronomers to enjoy the beginning of their work night.
28. What does the underlined word “reign” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Fade away. B. Draw near. C. End up. D. Take over.
29. What causes breathtaking sunsets during the civil twilight
A. The standout of red colors. B. The absence of artificial light.
C. The reflection of colorful tones. D. The spread of all colors of light. 30. What can we learn about the three phases of twilight
A. Each twilight is different in the sun’s position.
B. Each twilight allows for various scientific researches.
C. Nautical twilight is too bright to use celestial navigation.
D. Astronomical twilight is ideal for telescope observations.
31. What will the author introduce next
A. The impacts of twilight. B. The process of observing stars.
C. The interpretations of twilight. D. The workplace of astronomers.

Electric vehicles (EV) are a key component of the global shift toward sustainable energy, but a new study highlights a significant challenge: the refining (提纯) of critical minerals for EV batteries could lead to pollution hotspots near manufacturing centers.
The study reveals that fully domesticating the supply chains for EV production could drive national sulfur dioxide (SO ) emissions up by as much as 20% compared to current levels. Most of these emissions would stem from the refining and production of nickel and cobalt (镍和钴), essential materials for modern EV batteries.
The researchers argued that if left unaddressed, pollution from battery manufacturing will become an increasingly global challenge as EV adoption rates rise. Even if some countries were to outsource battery manufacturing, without strategies to reduce SO emissions, they would simply be offloading the problem to another country.
For countries like India who is in the early stages of supply chain development, the lowest-hanging fruit would be to focus first on cleaning up pollution from the power sector. This would require enforcing stricter SO pollution control measures for thermal power plants, using mature technologies like flue-gas desulfurization. For others, which already have strict emissions control s for the power sector, the focus needs to shift to mitigating SO emissions from the battery manufacturing process.
In addition to their policy recommendation for proactive air pollution standards, which would likely happen at the national or subnational level, the researchers also examined how changing the battery chemistry in EV could avoid unwanted SO emissions at a more global scale. While most EV batteries today rely on cobalt and nickel, the rise of alternative chemistries that use iron and phosphate (磷 酸 铁 锂 电 池 ) could circumvent some of the concerns associated with mining and refining nickel and cobalt.
In all events, the findings serve as a reminder to keep people at the top of mind when designing decarbonization plans, as even the most promising technologies could come with unwanted and unintended consequences.
32. Why does the author write the text
A. To compare different types of EV batteries.
B. To warn about the pollution risk from EV batteries.
C. To call for global cooperation in EV development.
D. To explain why EV development has slowed down.
33. What would happen if EV battery manufacturing were fully domestic
A. It would promote the national economy.
B. It would speed up EV battery production.
C. It would boost nickel and cobalt refining.
D It would cause more domestic SO emissions.
34. Why does the author mention India in the passage
A. To criticize India's current emission control measures.
B. To suggest that developing countries face pollution risks.
C. To show that countries need tailored pollution strategies.
D. To illustrate India's progress in supply chain development.
35. How does the author feel about promising green technologies like EVs
A. Cautiously optimistic about their future.
B. Fully confident in their economic benefits.
C. Disappointed in their environmental impact.
D. Deeply alarmed by their potential side effects.

Are you as good at things as you think you are How good are you at managing money Are you better than average at grammar Psychological research suggests that we’re not very good at evaluating ourselves accurately. 36 . This phenomenon is called the Dunning-Kruger effect.
37 . On average, people tend to rate themselves better than most in health, leadership skills, and beyond. What’s particularly interesting is that those with the least ability often overrate their skills to the greatest extent.
When psychologists Dunning and Kruger first described the effect in 1999, they argued that people lacking knowledge and skill in particular areas suffer a double curse. They make mistakes and reach poor decisions. 38 . In other words, poor performers lack the knowledge needed to recognize how badly they’re doing.
The effect shows people usually do admit their weaknesses once they can spot them. This may be why people with average knowledge or skill often have less confidence in their abilities.
39 .
Meanwhile, experts tend to be aware of just how knowledgeable they are. But they often make a different mistake: they assume that everyone else is knowledgeable, too. 40 . When they’re unskilled, they can’t see their own faults. When they’re extremely competent, they don’t perceive how unusual their abilities are.
So what can we do First, ask for feedback from others. Second, keep learning. The more knowledgeable we become, the less likely we are to have invisible holes in our competence.
A. They know enough to realize their shortcomings.
B. They all have incompetence they don’t recognize.
C. Actually, we often wrongly estimate our own abilities.
D. In short, people are often caught in inaccurate self-perception. ·
E. This effect explains why people display imaginary superiority.

After our family settled in America, we made our home on Pearl Street in New York’s Chinatown. Downstairs from our apartment, my parents managed a small Chinese bakery. My mother chose my name after our street address—Pearl Wong.
Like many strict Chinese mothers, mine constantly stressed the need to excel. "Be the best or be forgotten," she’d say in her choppy English. She inspected my school grades like a detective, ready to scold me if she saw a B instead of an A.
One holiday, my brother got a chess set missing several pieces. Mom called it “worthless trash,” but my siblings and I couldn’t stop playing with it—especially me. I flooded everyone with questions: “Why can’t this piece move farther ” “Why does that one attack sideways ” My mother wiped flour from her hands and gave me the rule book. “You figure it out,” she shrugged.
I studied every page, memorized strategies, and practiced until my fingers memorized the board. Before long, I was defeating my brothers effortlessly. Each win sharpened my skills and fueled my obsession to dominate.
When I began competing in tournaments, trophies (奖 杯 ) started piling up. Mom transformed into my loudest cheerleader—in her unique style. She demanded perfection at every match and arranged each prize in the bakery’s display window. Though I begged her to stop, she’d wave me off. Soon, her cakes sat beside gleaming awards. “This my Pearl—chess genius!” she’d boast to customers, glowing with pride. But her boast made me feel like a puppet (木偶), as if my victories belonged to her, not me.
One weekend, Mom dragged me from shop to shop in Chinatown, not buying anything. “Meet Pearl Wong—chess queen of our neighborhood!” she announced to every store owner.
Their forced smiles tightened as we stayed, their annoyance growing with each introduction. 注意:

Dear Patrick,
I’m Li Hua from Class 6. I’m writing on behalf of our study group to ask for some clarification regarding the “Discovering Campus Plants” project assignment you gave us.
We’re a bit confused about the scope of the project. Specifically, we’re not sure if we should focus only on the plants in our schoolyard or if we can include those in the nearby botanical garden as well. Also, when it comes to presenting our findings, we’re unsure about the format you expect — should it be a written report, a PowerPoint presentation, or something else
We’d really appreciate it if you could provide some guidance. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写
Yet, she went on and on, totally ignoring my burning eyes. As she was ready to take me to the next stop, I erupted, “I wish you wouldn’t do that!” She grabbed my hand tightly, her eyes blazing with a mix of shock. In a trembling voice, she asked if being her daughter was something I found embarrassing. Though I knew I should stay silent, I heard myself yelling, “You are using me to show off! ” She stopped talking, a blend of anger and hurt appearing on her face. Panicked and outraged, I fled in dead silence, not daring to look back.
When I finally returned to the bakery, my mother was putting away the trophies. Her hands moved swiftly yet quietly. I almost thought she was going to “give me color to see”. However, suddenly she spoke, “I’m sorry, Pearl. I didn’t mean to use you. I’m just too proud to be your mama.” Hearing that, I looked up, her wrinkled face telling a long story. Tears blurred my vision as I stepped forward, wrapping her in an American-style hug. For the first time ever, I felt like a real champion not only in my own heart but also in my mum’s heart.

For those of you planning to go boating on the lake, you should have very good weather until late on Sunday afternoon when the wind is expected to increase. So please pay attention to the weather forecast just in case you need to return to land. We’ ll be back at 9 am tomorrow. Have a good weekend!
