二、阅读理解记叙文
One of the most memorable volunteering moments for me was when I received a call from another volunteer who works for the Metropolitan Police.
“Loraine, I’ve found a pair of false teeth in the back of my car ... What do I do ”
“Well, give them back. I assume they aren’t yours Who did you take home after the tea party ”
“Er, Peggy, Joan and Alan ...”
“Well, there’s your answer.”
“What do you mean What should I do ”
“You’re the detective!”
I’m 62 now and always planned to volunteer with older people when I retired. I knew there was such a big gap in the care and support this generation receives and I found the thought heartbreaking—no one should have to feel lonely and stuck at home.
Since I started volunteering three years ago, my team of volunteers have set up seven groups in our town. We host tea parties for those aged 75 and older who live on their own and regularly provide support, friendship and companionship (陪伴) for the most isolated older people in the community.
Working with my older neighbors is rewarding. To hear their stories and the hardships they have overcome is inspiring. I feel like I’m making a positive difference to the lives of older people by sharing my time with them, helping them stay active and social and making clear to them that they are valued by our community.
As an area coordinator (协调人), I also help recruit (招募) and manage volunteers, without whom none of the work would be possible. So many go above and beyond what’s asked, giving their time, energy and kindness, just because they care. I’ve found so much enthusiasm (热情) from people wanting to make the lives of our older neighbors better, and they are a constant source of inspiration for me.
I’ve met so many amazing people from all walks of life (各行各业). It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done and it’s enriched my life so much. I will keep focusing on reducing loneliness and isolation among the elderly and helping older people enjoy the old age that they deserve.

Today, while walking to work on a busy street, I passed a poor old lady with her hand out on the corner. Seeing her aged face and sightless eyes, I stopped at once. A wave of sympathy (同情) washed over me, and I remembered the money that had been lying in my wallet all these months.
I took out the money from the wallet and bent down to her level. Gently, I took her hand, placed the notes into it, and closed her fingers over the notes so that she could feel the money and understand my action. After I got up, I slowly moved away. I felt like I had achieved something. I had kept my word to myself. The lady nodded her head a little bit. I felt happy and moved on.

Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence” system (远程遥控系统)—allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, healthcare and government services. Around the city, escalators (自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.
About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

Speaking or listening in a foreign language is tiring, and ▲ . I advise that you read online newspapers or join chat groups in your language.
Every culture has unspoken rules, which influence the way people treat one another. You may find these confusing (令人困惑的) and difficult to understand. One student didn’t follow safety rules and put all wastes together in one bottle. As a result, the lab exploded (爆炸) and a fire broke out.
The last student that used the waste bottle reported that he saw some brown smock coming from it. Then he added more waste, covered the bottle and walked away. A minute or two later, it exploded. Glass pieces flew across the lab. Luckily, these students were wearing safety glasses at all times in the lab and nobody was hurt.
When students follow the rules strictly, this kind of accident can be avoided. Here are some rules you must follow in chemistry labs.
Firstly, pay attention to what you are doing! Lab accidents happen mostly when you are cleaning up or doing something that you don’t think is dangerous. If you notice unusual smoke coming from a waste bottle, to not cover it. Protect your eyes and call the teacher. Then, always check the name on the bottle twice before use anything because some chemicals (化学物质), when put together, can produce fire, or even explode. Thirdly, if you’re not using certain chemicals, put them away. Never do experiments without your teacher’s instruction, nor touch any chemical with your hand, nor smell chemicals with your nose near them.
30.What can we know from the accident
A.Chemistry labs are fun places to study. B.Chemistry labs are always too dangerous to work in.
C.Following rules in a chemistry lab is important. D.Students shouldn’t get into a chemistry lab.
31.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.How to stop accidents from happening.
B.How the accident happened.
C.Where students should go when an accident happens.
D.Who students should ask for help when an accident happens.
32.Which of the following should we do in a chemistry lab
A.Do the experiment ourselves without any help.
B.Cover a bottle when there is unusual smoke.
C.Take chemicals with our hands.
D.Check the name on the bottle carefully.
When we think of the most respected awards in the world, the Nobel Prize (诺贝尔奖) must be on the list.
Created by Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel in 1895, the prize recognizes achievements in sciences and people behind them. Every year in October, the announcement of winners catches the world’s attention.
But what is the importance behind this award According to founder Nobel himself, the prize is for people who have provided “the greatest benefit (好处) to humans”.
A number of Nobel Prizes have rewarded discoveries that have led to cures for diseases and health problems. A lot of parts in telephones, computers and telecommunication systems are also the fruits of Nobel Prize-awarded work. Other prizes have recognized those who have helped to create a more peaceful world.
The individuals selected and the contributions they made show how science, literature and peace efforts improve and change the world and better our lives.
In the series of books about the Nobel Prize, the author says, “many everyday things would be impossible without the work of the winners of the Nobel science prizes”.
Think about the plastic bags. Plastic wouldn’t have been invented without Friedrich Wilhelm Ostwald’s research. The German scientist won the Nobel Prize in 1909.
In recent years, Chinese people have paid more attention to the results of the Nobel Prize. Chinese scientists and writers are known to the world by their achievements, such as 2012 Nobel literature prize winner Mo Yan, and Tu Youyou, China’s first Nobel winner in physiology or medicine in 2015. The opera of Dream of the Red Chamber (红楼梦) , the first opera adapted (改编) from an 18th century Chinese novel under the same name, returned to San Francisco in mid-June this year, six years after its world debut (首演) . The opera, developed for Western audiences (观众), has received international praise since its first performance.
Zhang Meigui, a 28-year-old opera singer, played the role of Daiyu in the opera. Bright Sheng, the opera’s composer, explained in an interview why Daiyu sang in a loud voice. “Music carries feelings that words cannot explain or say. To me, it has to be loud crying, beating her chest as she looks up at the sky to ask these questions.” For the new production, Sheng said he made some changes. He said, “A great opera is not only a big musical theater in action, but also a perfect mixture of music and drama.”

Have you watched livestreaming (直播) shows given by virtual hosts They look like real people, but in fact, they’re just digital humans created by AI companies.
Xmov is such an AI company in China. Set up in 2018, it has created lots of great digital humans. Xmov is the first company in China to create a virtual star named Ling, who is always in a traditional Chinese costume. Last year, the company also used a 3D AI host to manifest their new products to over 300 guests at an event.
Now, many companies are using virtual hosts to sell their products. For one thing, it costs much less than building a traditional livestreaming room and team. For another, virtual hosts can work 24 hours a day.
Virtual humans are used in more industries. In the near future, we may see them act as teachers, guides, and so on. It will not only improve many industries, but also allow human workers to put more energy into creative work instead of doing boring tasks.

Dear Mr. White, To be honest, I disliked you when I first met you. I disliked you when you made me stand up straight. I disliked the rule that you made me wear my uniform. What I disliked most was that you didn’t accept my homework unless it was the best. We had lots of arguments. But you never lost your temper (发脾气). You were always patient with me. Thank you, my dear teacher! Yours, Nick

1.Why does the author mention the call in the first few paragraphs
A.To introduce a volunteer she works with.
B.To explain why she started volunteering.
C.To show she enjoys her volunteer work.
D.To describe a problem older people often meet.
2.What does the underlined word “isolated” in paragraph 9 probably mean
A.friendly B.lonely C.helpless D.supportive
3.What does the author think of her work as a volunteer
A.It is meaningful. B.It gives her confidence.
C.It is challenging. D.It reduces her loneliness.
4.What quality of the other volunteers inspired the author
A.Their people skills. B.Their creativity.
C.Their optimism (乐观). D.Their passion.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.D
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。本文主要讲述了作者作为志愿者的经历和感受,特别是她与老年人互动的一些趣事以及志愿工作对她生活的积极影响。
1.推理判断题。根据“One of the most memorable volunteering moments for me was when I received a call from another volunteer…”和“I’m 62 now and always planned to volunteer with older people when I retired…”
根据“who live on their own”和“regularly provide support, friendship and companionship (陪伴) for the most isolated older people”可知,有些老人是独自生活的,由此可知提供支持、友谊和陪伴的对象也是孤独的老人,所以“isolated”与“lonely”意思相近。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据“Working with my older neighbors is rewarding ... I feel like I’m making a positive difference to the lives of older people ...”可知,作者认为她的志愿工作非常有意义,能够对老年人的生活产生积极影响。故选A。
4.细节理解题。根据“So many go above and beyond what’s asked, giving their time, energy and kindness, just because they care ... I’ve found so much enthusiasm from people wanting to make the lives of our older neighbors better ...”可知,作者从那些想让老邻居生活得更好的人们那里发现了如此多的热情,由此可知,其他志愿者的热情和奉献精神深深打动了作者。故选D。
For the first time, the highest prize in architecture has been awarded to an African person. This year, Diebedo Francis Kere, of Burking Faso (布基纳法索,非洲国家), won the Pritzker Architecture Prize (普利兹克建筑奖).
Kere’s buildings are made out of natural materials and built for local people. His most famous work is a school in Gando, the village where he grew up.
When he was 7, Kere had to go to a faraway city to study. That’s because Gando didn’t have a school. Back then, it also had no electricity or clean drinking water. Kere was the first person in his village to go to school. The villagers had great hopes for him.
A few years later, when Kere became an architect in Germany, he raised $50,000 (about 318, 300 yuan). Then, he went back to Gando to build a school.
The school has three buildings. Each has one classroom for 50 students. Kere built them with old materials but in new ways. The clay (陶土的) houses don’t look fancy (华丽的), but they keep cool under the hot African sun.

When do you become an adult The answers are different from country to country. In modern China, adulthood for both boys and girls starts at the age of 18. By the time most people reach 18, they have finished high school and are ready for university. So a person’s 18th birthday often means a celebration of both adulthood and the start of college life.
Did children in ancient China become adults at 18 In fact, boys in ancient China became adults at 20 and girls at 15. And there was a ceremony (仪式) to celebrate this time. After the ceremony, a young person could be called an “adult”.
For girls, the ceremony was called Ji Li. “Ji” is a kind of hairpin (簪子). In ancient times, only girls from rich families could have this ceremony. It was simple and didn’t take much time.
