一、阅读理解
Shanya Gill is a 13-year-old girl from California, US. In April, 2024, she got a special invitation to visit the US Fire Administration’s Office with her father. There, they had a talk about fire control. They were invited because Gill made a new fire detector (探测器), which made her win the top prize in an international competition the year before they talk.
It all started with a big fire. When Gill was in Grade 6, the restaurant behind her house burned down. No one died, but the accident made Gill and her family feel afraid. “The restaurant had smoke detectors, but still, the restaurant could not be saved,” Gill said. “I came to realize that smoke detectors simply are not good enough and decided to make a better fire detector.”
She studied programming and made a system that can detect warm things with 98% accuracy (准确率). It detects hot ones with 97% accuracy and sends warnings to people. This is better than traditional smoke detectors which only have about 82% to 94% accuracy. Gill now hopes to share her invention with the world. She doesn’t want to patent (申请专利) it because she hopes everyone can use it. She wants it to save as many lives and buildings as possible. Nature has many ways of solving problems. Humans learn a lot from animals and plants. There is a science that studies how we copy ideas from nature to create useful products. This science is called biomimetics (仿生学).
Some animals, like the sugar glider, have wing-like structures (结构). They spread out their arms and legs to slow down and land easily. The idea for wing-suits, special clothes that let people experience flying, comes from the sugar glider.

Also, some hold a traditional point that dads just make the money while going to school meetings feels like more of a mom’s job.

When dads spend more time with their kids, the kids can do better in language and math, feel more confident and even make more friends. “Dads are also important in shaping young kids’ personalities (性格),” said Luo Xuepeng from Guangdong, a father of a 9-year-old boy. “A rational (理性的) and strong dad can help kids have good habits and become more lively,” he added.

Are you afraid of getting old Do you think age stops people from being powerful
DonnaJean Wilde, a 59-year-old grandmother from Alberta, Canada, has shown that age doesn’t stop you from being amazing. She set two world records: the most push-ups (俯卧撑) by a woman in one hour, with 1,575, and the longest plank (平板支撑) time for a woman, at 4 hours, 30 minutes and 11 seconds.
Wilde started doing 500 push-ups every day while practising planks. She loved push-ups and decided to challenge herself. She practised outside near her home in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. She said that nature’s quiet power gave her inspiration (鼓舞).
When she broke the push-up record, she had 17 minutes left. Her 11 grandchildren cheered her on, counted her sets, “My grandma is officially amazing! Even though she hurt her shoulder, she kept going. She believes that staying active and having health goals are the key to aging ‘gracefully (优雅地) and powerfully’.”

On August 24, a school in Hangzhou had a special meeting to which only dads were invited. The meeting hoped to “encourage dads to actively take part in family education”, reported Guangming Daily.
In the last few years, people have been talking about the fact that fathers are missing from family education. Most moms in China help their kids with homework, according to All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF) and National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Why do dads miss the school meetings and even family education Some fathers say that they are too busy with work to take time off or they think the moms are better at communicating with teachers. Also, some hold a traditional point that dads just make the money while going to school meetings feels like more of a mom’s job.
However, dads and moms both play important parts in their children’s education.
