Still seeking a destination for your weekend break There are some places which are
probably a mere walk away from your college.
King's Art Centre
A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most
interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an
exhibition of four local artists.
You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative
with paint ---- free of charge.
The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee. The Botanic Garden
The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of
living plants for Cambridge University.
The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers
above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.
Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the
Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.
The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A
snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.
Byron's Pool
Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it
高二英语(6 月)学生学业能力调研试卷 第 3 页 共 14 页
seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about
the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.
It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now
known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire
countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of
invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the
village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf-
----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.
36.As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_____.
A.attending the masters' class B.working with local artists C.learning life drawing D.seeing an exhibition
37."Torch Aloe" and "Venus Flytrap" are_____.
A.common insects B.impressive plants
C.rarely-seen snakes D.wildlife-enthusiasts
38.We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed_____.
A.to fear pet bears B.to like walking
C.to be a heavy drinker D.to finish university in 1805 39.In the passage Byron's Pool is described as a lake_____.
A.surrounded by fields B.owned by Lord Byron
C.located in Grantchester D.discovered by Virginia Woolf
40.What is the passage mainly about
A.Some places for weekend break B.A way to become creative in art.
C.The colourful life in the countryside.
D.Unknown stories of Cambridge University.
B
As a young person, I never thought of myself as a sports enthusiast because I was quite
clumsy. But there was one thing I enjoyed: running. It felt like I was soaring (翱翔) through the
air. Sadly, this changed when I hurt my knee two years ago. I had to stay in bed for two weeks
and even walking a short way was hard for me. I was so upset that I cried as I moved to the car
for several days.
When therapy (治疗,疗法) wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class
for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a blessing because it helped
me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state
of mind, body and spirit.
Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel
a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts
were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times.
However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away (动摇) by my
negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.
After 3-4months of practising hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition.
I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I
gradually started shedding the pounds (减轻体重) from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as
高二英语(6 月)学生学业能力调研试卷 第 4 页 共 14 页
if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and
made my overall health better.
As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think
maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations
physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative
limiting terms.
Also, practising yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practising
with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity
whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger
picture in life!
41.What once depressed the author terribly according to Paragraph 1
A.Her inability to walk. B.Her negative thoughts.
C.Her failure to find her car. D.Her serious physical disease.

C.She became mentally stronger. D.She accepted herself as she was.
43.What difficulty did the author meet while attending each yoga class
A.The temperature was difficult to control in yoga class.
B.She couldn’t bear the pain the knee injury brought. C.Lack of confidence prevented the author doing yoga. D.She was greatly influenced by negative thoughts.
44.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 4
A.Her physical state has acquired a new outlook.
B.Her social circle was widened in the yoga classes. C.She has developed many healthy eating habits.
D.She did better than her classmates at school.
45.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A.To call on readers to sign up for yoga courses.
B.To present the benefits of practising yoga regularly.
C.To show readers the necessary skills needed to do yoga.
D.To share with readers her experience in taking yoga classes.

Perhaps it is time for farmers to put their feet up now that robots are used to inspect crops,
dig up weeds, and even have become shepherds(牧羊人), mercial growing fields are
astronomically huge and take thousands of man-hours to operate. One prime example is one of
Australia’s most isolated cattle stations, Suplejack Downs in the Northern Territory, extending
across 4,000 square kilometers, taking over 13 hours to reach by car from the nearest major town
— Alice Springs.
The extreme isolation of these massive farms leaves them often unattended, and monitored
only once or twice a year. which means if the livestock falls ill or requires assistance, it can be a
long time for farmers to discover.
However, robots are coming to the rescue. Robots are currently under a two-year trial in
Wales which will train“farmbots” to herd, monitor the health of livestock, and make sure there is
高二英语(6 月)学生学业能力调研试卷 第 5 页 共 14 页
enough pasture for them to graze on. The robots are equipped with many sensors to identify
conditions of the environment, cattle and food, using thermal and vision sensors that detect
changes in body temperature.
“You’ ve also got color, texture and shape sensors looking down at the ground to check
pasture quality,” says Salah Sukkarieh of the University of Sydney, who will carry out trials on
several farms in central New South Wales.
During the trials, the robot algorithms (算法) and mechanics will be fine-tuned to make it
better suited to ailing livestock and ensure it safely navigates around potential hazards including
trees, mud, swamps, and hills.
“We want to improve the quality of animal health and make it easier for farmers to
maintain large landscapes where animals roam free,” says Sukkarieh.
The robots are not limited to herding and monitoring livestock. They have been created to
count individual fruit, inspect crops, and even pull weeds.
Many robots are equipped with high-tech sensors and complex learning algorithms to
avoid injuring humans as they work side by side. The robots also learn the most efficient and
safest passages, and allow engineers and farmers to analyze and better optimize the attributes(特
质) and tasks of the robot, as well as provide a live stream giving real-time feedback on exactly
what is happening on the farms.
Of course, some worry lies in replacing agricultural workers. However, it is farmers that
are pushing for the advancements due to ever-increasing labor vacancies, making it difficult to
maintain large-scale operations.
The robots have provided major benefits to farmers in various ways, from hunting and
pulling weeds to monitoring the condition of every single fruit. Future farms will likely
experience a greater deal of autonomy as robots take up more and more farm work efficiently.
46.What may farmers be able to do with robots appearing on the farming scene
A.Upgrade farm produce. B.Enjoy more leisure hours.
C.Modify the genes of crops. D.Cut down farming costs.
47.What will “farmbots” be expected to do
A.Take up many of the farmers’ routines. B.Provide medical treatments for livestock. C.Lead the trend in farming the world over. D.Improve the quality of pastures for grazing.
48. What can robots do when equipped with high-tech sensors and complex learning algorithms
A.Help farmers choose the most efficient and safest passages. B.Help farmers simplify their farming tasks and management.
C.Allow farmers to learn instantly what is occurring on the farm. D.Allow farmers to give them real-time instructions on what to do.
49.Why are farmers pressing for robotic farming
A.Farming costs are fast increasing. B.Robotics technology is maturing.
C.Robotic farming is the trend. D.Labor shortage is worsening.
50.What does the author think future farms will be like
A.More and more automated. B.More and more productive.
C.Larger and larger in scale. D.Better and better in condition.

Should we focus on our goal, or on the process
What happened to Brenda Martinez, a US Olympic runner, may provide us with the answer.
She lost her balance in the 800-meter run and failed to qualify for the Olympics. Instead of
focusing on her failure, she prepared to win in the next race. “I just quickly let go of what
happened in the 800m and got back to my routine, to focusing on all the little things I could do
that would give me the best chance of running well later in the week,” she told New York
Magazine. She said it was this mindset that led to her winning third place in the 1500-meter race
about a week later to qualify for the Olympics in Rio. Instead of attaching herself to the goal of
making the Olympic team, she concentrated on the process.
There is a problem with setting goals. Researchers from Harvard, the University of
Pennsylvania and Northwestern found that overemphasizing goals based on measurable
outcomes often leads to risk-taking, unethical (不 道 德 的 ) behavior and reduced motivation.
Their results were published in a Harvard Business School report titled Goals Gone Wild: The
Systematic Side Effects of Over-Prescribing Goal Setting.
When you become overly focused on achieving the goal, you may lose sight of your original
purpose for accomplishing the goal in the first place. Another danger is actually completing the
goal without setting a plan for what’s next. For example, some marathon runners experience
what’s called the “post-race blues”. Achieving your goal may cause you to drop the good habits
that got you there in the first place. Dieters often experience this in what’s called “yo-yo dieting”
when they drop down to a desired weight, but then gain all the weight back when they resume
(重新开始) their bad habits.
“After you set a goal, it’s best to shift your focus from the goal itself to the process that
gives you the best chance of achieving it and to judge yourself based on how well you complete
that process,” columnist Brad Stulberg wrote on the website The Cut.
Ultimately, changing your attention from goals to process will cause you to achieve little
victories on your way to accomplishing long-term goals. Amy Cuddy, a Harvard Business School
psychology professor, wrote that focusing on this process “leaves you with a sense of satisfaction
and accomplishment, regardless of the measurable outcome”.
51.Why is Brenda Martinez’s experience mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.To show opportunity favors the prepared mind. B.To describe how important it is to set big goals.
C.To suggest learning from failure can bring success.
D.To show how focusing on the process can lead to success.
52.According to Paragraph 3, overemphasizing goals could bring about________.
A.the use of unfair means B.ignoring the whole picture
C.overestimating the setbacks D.being stressed by the risks involved
53.With the examples in Paragraph 4, the author intends to show that________.
A.we can’t focus on the goal too much
B.we must keep in mind why we set the goal
C.we should resume our habits when completing the goal D.we should accept it is normal to feel down after success
54.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about
高二英语(6 月)学生学业能力调研试卷 第 7 页 共 14 页
A.Ways of judging a goal. B.Ways to set long-term goals.
C.The best chance of achieving goals. D.Benefits of focusing on the process.

A.by making a comparison B.by reasoning with examples C.by giving statistics D.by doing an experiment

A man in black clothes jumps high into the air. Before he lands, he strikes a pose.
Sometimes, he carries a red fan. With long white sleeves(袖子), he spreads his arms like wings.
His dance is eye-catching, often attracting crowds.
He is Chinese dancer Ma Jiaolong. Since 2020, he’s made short videos of himself dancing in
London. He has performed at the city’s parks and iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge. The
35-year-old has nearly 5 million followers on Douyin, where he shares his videos.
Classical Chinese dance combines martial arts movements with those of traditional Chinese
opera. He started to learn it at 12. “I was attracted by the dancers who play ancient heroes
through the movements of classical Chinese dance,” said Ma.
Later, Ma studied at the Beijing Dance Academy. Since 2019, he has been teaching classical
Chinese dance at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Two years ago, Ma had to give online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his small
home, he could only make small moves. One day, he took his wife’s suggestion and danced at
Greenwich Park, a popular tourist spot. She recorded Ma. He then edited the video, added music
and sent it to friends. “Surprisingly, they loved it, which inspired me to share it online,” said Ma.
Later, Ma made more short videos. He combines his dance moves with dazzling action.
People are often curious about his performances. So, while dancing, he likes to interact with
them. As his videos went viral, he received messages from people around the world.

73.书面表达(满分 25 分) Dear Sir/Madam,
I'm Li Jin, a senior high school student from China. I'm writing to apply for the
Chinese tutor position you advertised online.
I'm excited about this opportunity because I want to share my love for Chinese culture
with others. As a native Chinese speaker, I have a deep understanding of our traditions and
language. Plus, I've studied English for over 10 years and can explain things clearly in both
languages.
During winter break, I taught basic Chinese to three foreign friends using fun games
and stories. They improved a lot and even tried writing Chinese characters! This experience
made me realize how rewarding it is to help others learn.
If given this chance, I'll prepare interesting lessons about Chinese festivals, calligraphy,
and daily conversations. I truly believe language learning should be enjoyable and
meaningful.
Thank you for considering my application. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
