The Self-Portrait Challenge
Have you ever done a self-portrait in an art lesson at school?Today,we’re challenging you to write self-portrait poems. It’s not uncommon to feel like the way people see you on the outside doesn’t quite match up with how you feel on the inside. So creating a self-portrait can be a good opportunity to address those differences and present the realest, truest version of yourself.
Your challenge is to create a self-portrait in lines, using words instead of paint.Read on for some more inspiration.
Writing Tips
·Have a go at writing a list of metaphors exploring your physical appearance, starting from your head and working your way down towards your feet.
·Instead of representing yourself directly, take on another character, such as a fictional character,a historical figure,or even a different version of yourself.
·Play around with personification,by taking on the voice of a physical object in your poem.Think about what a self-portrait from the point of view of a mirror,or a bowl of your favourite food would look like

As an ordinary man,I have a special habit to confess.Whenever I walk down the street,I offer to pour a bottle of water from the nearby river into the dirt of a street tree. It’s just my personal habit, and I think it doesn’t make a difference, but I’d like to do it.I mention this in light of a campaign launched by the Arboricultural Association to call on the public to water new street trees.
The UK government has committed to planting millions of trees to help meet climate targets and aims to increase tree cover from 14.5% to 16.5% by 2050.However,as John Parker, chief executive of the Arboricultural Association, says,“Planting a tree is just the start of the story. The health and survival of new urban trees is threatened by increasingly dry weather. It is recommended that the newly planted trees be given about 50 litres of water per week for the first three years.” While in rural settings, the newly planted trees and woods can take care of themselves and adapt, the challenging conditions mean trees in the urban areas need a bit more care.
Long ago,I assumed that the good of street trees was to soften the hard edges of urban environments. But,what an underestimation of tree power that was! A study from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities illustrates they can provide inspiration or a calming atmosphere in an otherwise crowded city.Trees are responsible for easing urban heat island effects and air and pollutant filtration. And I think they provide the habitat for wildlife, especially birds.
Trees can’t run away.Unfortunately for them and fortunately for urban residents, city trees are stuck with us.If we want to continue enjoying all the good they do,we should try to understand their needs and do all that we can to support them.A bottle of water won’t do much, but next time you all together have a bucket of water to pour, you know what big effect will happen.
24.What does the author think of his personal habit
A.It is of little effect.
B.It is enforced.
C.It is of much significance.
D.It is common.
25.What does John Parker say about urban trees
A.They have started to be watered regularly.
B.More work needs to be done for their living.
C.They are threatened by the increasing flood.
D.The newly planted ones can’t look after themselves.
26.What can we learn about street trees from paragraph 3
A.Their usage is overrated.
B.Their value is thought highly of by the public.
C.They benefit residents physically and mentally.
D.They can thoroughly solve environmental problems.
27.What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A.When in need,ask for it.
B.Tall trees catch much wind.
C.Misfortunes seldom come alone.
D.Many hands make light work.

New research suggests that night owls may be more likely to develop heart disease or diabetes than early birds.People who get up early in the morning seem to burn more fat as an energy source and are often more active than those who stay up late.
According to a study in the journal Experimental Physiology by Rutgers University researchers, early risers use more fat during both rest and exercise, regardless of their aerobic fitness, compared to night owls. The former are also more active throughout the day, using more fat, while their late-night counterparts tend to store more.
While the two groups had similar body compositions, the early risers were more sensitive to insulin(胰岛素) blood levels and burned more fat during exercise and rest. The study found that night owls used carbohydrates for energy instead of burning fat for fuel.
Dr.Steven Malin, the study’s lead researcher, mentioned that his team had not decoded why these two groups had different metabolisms(新陈代谢).It could be due to a “mismatch” between their bedtime and natural circadian rhythms(昼夜节律).
Night owls are reported to have a higher rate of obesity,Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease compared to early birds. This could be because they become misaligned(偏离) with their circadian rhythm, especially among adults who work and may have to wake up early, disrupting their natural body clock. This chronic misalignment is often referred to as “social jet lag”.
In addition to health risks, the article pointed out that night owls are more likely to engage in risky behaviors and consume more tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine. They also tend to skip breakfast and consume more food later in the day.
This research adds to the understanding that being a late sleeper has been associated with a higher risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. While some night owls may outperform early birds on certain cognitive tasks, the study highlights the potential health consequences of staying up late.It suggests that morning people may have better metabolic health, even if night owls are more alert during late hours.
28.What can we learn from the new study
A.Night owls are less likely to develop diseases.
B.Early risers tend to store more fat than night owls.
C.Night owls are more sensitive to insulin blood levels.
D.Early risers are more active and burn more fat than night owls.
29.What does the underlined word “decoded” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Accepted.

In recent years, aggression on social media has become commonplace.More than half of the victims said they didn’t know the identity of the perpetrator(作恶者).Most people agreed that the anonymity(匿名) of the Internet provides cover for nasty and harassing(骚扰) behavior.
Does this growing aggression on social media give us a glimpse of our real human nature Are we—at our core—aggressive beasts It’s true that hate crimes are on the rise, and political divisions appear to be growing. The level of public bitterness—especially online—is substantial. But I don’t believe that is because social media has unlocked our cruel human nature.
As an evolutionary anthropologist,I have spent years researching our transformation as a species.Over the past two million years,we have evolved from groups of apelike beings armed with sticks and stones to the creators of cars, rockets, and nations. Our bigger brains have allowed us to bond and cooperate in more complex and diverse ways than any other animal.Meanwhile,“you are whom you meet.” How we perceive, experience, and act in the world is shaped by who and what surround us on a daily basis. This process has deep evolutionary roots and gives humans what we call a shared reality.
I would argue that the rise in online aggression is a product of our evolutionary social skills, the social media boom, and the specific political, economic and social context where we find ourselves. This explosive combination has opened up a space for increasingly more people to fan the flames of aggression and insult online.Aggressive behavior—especially to those you don’t have to confront face-to-face—is easier than it’s ever been. And for the aggressor, there are often no consequences.
Yes,it seems that the world is getting more aggressive, but that’s not because we are more aggressive at our core. It’s because we haven’t been standing up against bullying, abuse, and aggressive harassment, and promoting prosocial attitudes and actions our contemporary world demands. In person and on social media,we must do both.
32.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph two refer to
A.Hate crimes on the rise.
B.Growing political divisions.
C.Considerable online bitterness.
D.The transformation of humans.
33.What’s the author’s attitude toward social media
A.Objective. B.Critical.
C.Approving. D.Ironic.
34.What does the author propose to address the issue of growing aggression
A.Embracing our aggressive nature to compete in today’s world.
B.Strengthening laws to hold perpetrators responsible for their online actions.
C.Focusing only on reducing anonymity on the Internet to reduce offensive behavior.
D.Promoting positive behaviors and interactions in both real-life and digital spaces.
35.What is mainly discussed in this passage
A.The impact of social media on society.
B.The reasons behind rising online aggression.
C.The influence of evolution on our behavior.
D.The factors in the social media development.

Sarah was a kind-hearted girl who lived near a big forest. She loved animals more than anything else. The forest was her favorite place, where she enjoyed watching the animals.
One cold winter day,she found a hurt deer caught in a trap.It looked awfully scared, and Sarah knew she had to help immediately. She approached slowly and set the deer free. The deer seemed to know that Sarah was kind, and they became friends. She named the deer Grace. She built a rough shelter from old pieces of wood for Grace.
Every day,Sarah went to see Grace. She brought food, water, and bandages for Grace’s injured leg.Gradually, the leg got better. They liked to spend time together.Sarah would read to Grace, and Grace would listen attentively.
When spring came,Grace’s leg was completely healed. It was time for her to return to the wild.Saying goodbye was very hard for Sarah. She hugged Grace and cried as she watched her go back to the forest. But she knew it was the right thing to do.
As the years passed,Sarah never forgot about Grace. She wanted to keep helping animals,so she became an animal doctor for wild animals. She assisted many animals, but Grace was always special to her.
Their time together was filled with love and trust. It changed Sarah’s life and helped her know what she wanted to do.Every day,she thought about Grace’s gentle eyes and their friendship. It made her want to help other animals just like she had helped Grace.
Sarah’s story with Grace was more than just a girl and a deer.It was about love, trust, and understanding. It was about knowing what is right and doing it,even when it’s difficult. Most of all,it was about a friendship that would lasted forever in Sarah’s heart.

A.They have started to be watered regularly.
B.More work needs to be done for their living.
C.They are threatened by the increasing flood.
D.The newly planted ones can’t look after themselves.
根据第二段中John Parker 所说的话“Planting a tree is just the start of the story. The health and survival of new urban trees is threatened by increasingly dry weather. It is recommended that the newly planted trees be given about 50 litres of water per week for the first three years.”
26.What can we learn about street trees from paragraph 3
A.Their usage is overrated.
B.Their value is thought highly of by the public.
C.They benefit residents physically and mentally.
D.They can thoroughly solve environmental problems.
答案 C

27.What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A.When in need,ask for it.
B.Tall trees catch much wind.
C.Misfortunes seldom come alone.
D.Many hands make light work.
答案 D

根据第一段中“People who get up early in the morning seem to burn more fat as an energy source and are often more active than those who stay up late.”
29.What does the underlined word “decoded” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Accepted.
B.Understood.
C.Ignored.

第二段中“Does this growing aggression on social media give us a glimpse of our real human nature Are we—at our core—aggressive beasts It’s true that hate crimes are on the rise, and political divisions appear to be growing. The level of public bitterness—especially online—is substantial.”
33.What’s the author’s attitude toward social media
A.Objective. B.Critical.
C.Approving. D.Ironic.
答案 A
根据第一段中“Most people agreed that the anonymity(匿名) of the Internet provides cover for nasty and harassing(骚扰) behavior.”和第二段中“The level of public bitterness—especially online—is substantial. But I don’t believe that’s because social media has unlocked our cruel human nature.” 故选A。
第二段中“But I don’t believe that’s because social media has unlocked our cruel human nature.”

根据“over the past years”可知,此处应用现在完成时。 故填has served。
61.答案 to strengthen
故填to strengthen。
62.答案 As
故填As。
63.答案 the
故填the。
65.答案 and
分析句子可知,动词短语“make breakthroughs...”,“promote the cooperation...”和“improve the...” 故填and。
