In a 10-episode series,a sixth-grade class at the Georgetown School of Innovation in Georgetown,Calif.,shares stories from the damaging Mosquito Fire in 2022.This group of eight students asks two firefighters from the Georgetown Fire Department what it’s like to fight fires and protect loved ones in their hometown.

Flowing Through Time
In this podcast from Peak Academy,a group of eight middle schoolers reports on dealing with water shortages in Bozeman,Montana. They trace the history of their growing hometown’s water supply, which has been dependent on mountain snowmelt. As that source becomes less reliable in a warming world, the students turn to the grown-ups to ask what they can do to conserve water.
Washed Away

(2025·四川攀枝花统考)
In spring 2015,after 39 years with Columbia Pictures,I retired and found myself with lots of free time to spare.
I decided to use that time to volunteer. While tutoring with the adult literacy program at my local library,an advertising flyer for a neighborhood group called Westchester Villages caught my eye.Its main job is about matching aging neighbors with local volunteers who help them in a number of different ways: Making short visits, being a walking partner,or driving to doctors’ appointments and the like.
I am happy to offer myself as a responsible person and a comfort to someone who is nervous about their appointment and concerned about getting there safely on time.I’m usually available to stay with the person I’m driving during their visit and accompany them back to my car for the ride home. These drives also can be ideal times for relaxing conversation.I’ve had many discussions with them, discovered many common interests, and heard numerous extended stories of past travels and family histories.
I often begin rides by comforting a nervous neighbor by calmly saying,“I know where we’re going, the most direct route, and the best place to park. You’re in good hands with me.” These driving experiences also have afforded me opportunities for reflection.I’ve come to feel united with the neighbors I have come to know, and a more eager awareness of the aging process we all share. In living through so much time with them,I realize I’m going through the same stages.
A final irony(讽刺) for this movie lover is that I no longer need to go to a darkened theatre and gaze at a big screen in search of high drama.Whether it’s a World War Ⅱ-era family story or anxiety about current events or good news from a doctor,I experience all from a definitely front row seat.
24.What did the author decide to do during his free time
A.Work as a librarian.
B.Give rides for elderly people.
C.Making short visits to sick people.
D.Play matches with aging neighbors.
25.Which of the following can best describe the author
A.Creative and competent.
B.Talented and warm-hearted.
C.Devoted and considerate.
D.Ambitious and hard-working.
26.What might the author’s driving experiences remind him of
A.His own aging process.
B.A driver’s responsibility.
C.The value of conversations.
D.Passengers’ words of comfort.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The author has been anxious about his health.
B.The author has no interest in dramas anymore.
C.The author prefers watching movies from a front row.
D.The author has found a new way of experiencing life.

(2025·山东滨州模拟预测)
When we are desperately searching for our glasses, wallet or keys,we might wish to have a photographic memory, but the truth is that we are designed to forget.
In fact, the majority of what we experience in a given day is likely to be forgotten in less than 24 hours. And that is a good thing.Think of all the passing encounters with people you will never see again, the times you spend waiting in a queue at the supermarket, and those awkward times while stuck in a crowded elevator. If our brains stored away every moment of every experience,we would never be able to find the information we need amid an ever-increasing pile of junk.
I have studied how we are able to recall past events,an ability known as “episodic memory(情境记忆)”.Endel Tulving,a pioneering cognitive psychologist who coined the term, described episodic memory as the unique human capability for “mental time travel”,wondering at will over what has happened as readily as over what might happen.
Recalling a rich episodic memory, you’ll have a feeling of being transported back to a point in your past,a specific time and place. For instance, the smell of freshly baked pastries might remind you of having breakfast with your grandmother,or a song by the Stone Roses might evoke your first kiss. This is why,if you have misplaced your keys, getting in touch with the sights, sounds and thoughts from an earlier time period can be an effective way of accessing those memories, enabling you to relive these past experiences.
On average, episodic memory gets worse as we get older, and that is due,at least in part,to the strange developmental path of the prefrontal cortex—an area of the brain that helps support episodic memory. In humans, the prefrontal cortex continues to develop throughout childhood and adolescence, only reaching maturity in young adults. Then it begins to decline in function, starting as early as your 30s.Consequently,ageing is a bit like having a dysfunctional time machine that frequently sends us to the wrong place.
28.Why is it a good thing to be forgetful
A.It is beneficial to health.
B.It makes room for significant things.
C.It frees people from worries.
D.It can signal some potential diseases.
29.Why does the author mention “baked pastries” and the “song”?
A.To illustrate his idea.
B.To clarify a concept.
C.To present his viewpoint.
D.To explain a phenomenon.
30.How can you refresh your memory
A.By making use of your five senses.
B.By contacting your family members.
C.By building mental relations with the present.
D.By putting yourself into the relevant context.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Old people are likely to get lost.
B.Memory decline is irresistible at 30.
C.Age plays a vital role in memory declining.
D.The prefrontal cortex determines our memory.

Every year,as the surface water temperature off the United States’ mid-Atlantic coast rises steadily from late spring through the summer,a pocket of uncharacteristically cool and crisp water gets trapped at the bottom of the ocean.Packed with nutrients, this thick band of cold water, known as the mid-Atlantic cold pool,is a vital home for shellfish species.Extending at its seasonal peak from Nantucket,Massachusetts,to Cape Hatteras,North Carolina, the cold pool creates a diverse ecosystem ranging from algae(海藻) to fish—and some of the most valuable shellfish fisheries in the United States.
Now,however, two pressures have scientists worrying about whether the cold pool will last. The first is no surprise:climate change.Over the past five decades, climate change has destabilized the cold pool, causing it to warm and pared with 1968,the cold pool is now 13℃ warmer and has lost more than one-third of its area.
The second concern is less certain. In 2023,the US federal government approved plans to install(安装) 98 wind turbines(涡轮机) off the New Jersey coast, covering an area of more than 300 square kilometers.Yet putting so many turbines to the seafloor could have unexpected consequences for the cold pool. That’s why Travis Miles,a researcher at New Jersey’s Rutgers University, and his colleagues are investigating. So far,Miles and his colleagues can’t definitively say what will happen to the cold pool when New Jersey’s new wind farm gets going. However, their initial analyses suggest the cold pool should be fine—at least in normal conditions.
New Jersey’s offshore wind plans are strongly opposed mainly by fossil fuel-industry funded opposition efforts.Miles worries that an overabundance of caution or fear of potential impacts, including on the cold pool, might slow down the development of renewable energy.“...it’s quite clear that climate change is far more damaging than installing wind farms,” he says.“I don’t think any scientist would argue with that.”
32.What do we know about the mid-Atlantic cold pool
A.It forms in early spring.
B.It’s a band of cold near-bottom water.
C.It serves as a habitat of most sea species.
D.It extends from Nantucket to New Jersey.
33.What does the underlined word “shrink” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Break down.
B.Get polluted.
C.Dry up.
D.Become smaller.
34.What is Miles’ attitude toward offshore wind plans
A.Supportive. B.Dismissive.
C.Overcautious. D.Skeptical.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.The Cold Pool Plays a Role on Biodiversity
B.Opinions Divide on Offshore Wind Plans
C.Scientists Eye Potential Risks to the Cold Pool
D.Renewable Energy Helps to Race Against Climate Change

39 Being responsible, reliable and dependable is key to forming strong friendships.Keep your engagements and arrive on time.Follow through on commitments you’ve made to your friends. When your friends share confidential information, keep it private.
Make yourself available. 40 Make an effort to see new friends regularly, and to check in with them in between meet-ups.You may feel awkward the first few times you talk on the phone or get together, but this feeling is likely to pass as you get more comfortable with each other.

Katie was happily jumping rope on the grass in front of her house facing the expansive city park just across the road. The neighborhood residents often enjoyed walking around the lake in the park, and on this pleasant day, with the sun casting its warm light,Katie spent the unhurried moments devoted to her jumping routine.
Her thoughts were focused on her jumping: how to match the spinning of the jump rope in her hands and the jumping of her feet so that they didn’t get mixed, causing her to trip. When her mind and muscles were working together, and when every move flowed smoothly, all of it felt pretty good in the afternoon sunshine. While jumping, she remembered that her grandmother had given her the jump rope for Christmas. She knew that her grandmother didn’t have a lot of money and had to save up to buy the jump rope for her. Before Christmas, her grandmother had taken her to some toy shops to look at different things, hoping to find out what Katie wanted. When Katie finally got the gift,it was not just a jump rope but the very jump rope she had wanted for a long time. She felt especially loved by her considerate grandmother.
The warmth of the afternoon sun enhanced the joy Katie felt as she skipped along.Suddenly a boy rushed across the road to her.Without any warning he robbed her of her jump rope, shouting,“Give me that” and raced back across the road towards the park.
Empty-handed,Katie was left in confusion. It took her a while to recover from the shock. When she came to her senses and realized the theft of her grandma’s gift, tears welled up.A wave of anger and disappointment swept over her.But in that moment of upset, something unusual in the park captured her attention.

M:Oh I did,but when the never-ending advertisements came on,I just switched it off.
W:I understand, but sometimes the ads are more entertaining than the programs, like that brilliant one for using your cash card properly.
M:Yes,I have no clue who handles their advertising, but they always come up with clever ideas.
W:So do the radio commercials.Have you seen their recent billboard campaign? They’re doing a series of eight.I’ve already spotted four of them, and they’re quite remarkable. It’s not just about selling products or services any more, but it’s also about telling a story or creating an experience.
M:Yes,I’ve definitely noticed that trend too, which makes it harder for us to ignore them.
W:Exactly.

M:Excuse me,I need some information about some classical gardens of Suzhou near here.
W:What would you like to know
M:Well, first I’d like directions to Gusu District.I believe there lies the number one classical garden in Suzhou. It isn’t far,is it
W:No,Gusu District is about six miles east from here, the railway station, and you’re right, dating back to the Ming Dynasty,Zhuozheng Garden in Gusu District is listed as a World Heritage Site and it is a must-see.
M:Oh good. Now what about Liuyuan Garden featuring the Qing Dynasty’s garden landscaping? And I also want to visit Tuisi Garden. Are they near each other
W:Hmm.Well,Liuyuan Garden is northwest, while Tuisi Garden is about eighteen miles southeast.
M:Eighteen miles southeast.Well,maybe I won’t go there this time.
W:I’d recommend visiting the Garden Museum next to Zhuozheng Garden and then you may want to visit the nearby Suzhou Museum, famous for its abundant and rare cultural relics of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
M:I see.Good,thank you.
W:You are welcome,sir.

W:Good afternoon, everyone.I’m here to offer you some tips on public speaking. One of the worst mistakes you can make as a public speaker is talking too long.It doesn’t matter if your entire speech is good and the audience comes away with information that will change their lives. If you talk too long, they will leave saying,“That speaker just wouldn’t quit.” Don’t let this happen to you.Say what you have to say and sit down. Before you do,give them a well-thought-out closing. The last thing you say is generally what the audience remembers most.Just like your opening, your closing doesn’t have to be humorous. It could be challenging, thoughtful,or it could retell your point in a different way. Please,at some time during your talk, ask the audience to do something. Many a great talk goes no further than the walls of the meeting room because the audience isn’t moved to action. If you haven’t asked them to do something by now,the closing is your last chance.

语篇解读 本文为一篇说明文。文章说明了遗忘并非坏事,可避免大脑被无用信息充斥,着重介绍了情境记忆以及其与年龄增长的关系。
28.Why is it a good thing to be forgetful
A.It is beneficial to health.
B.It makes room for significant things.
C.It frees people from worries.
D.It can signal some potential diseases.
答案 B
解析 细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“If our brains stored away every moment of every experience,we would never be able to find the information we need amid an ever-increasing pile of junk.”可知,遗忘可以帮助我们找寻需要的信息,避免大脑被无用信息充斥,即遗忘可以为重要的事腾出空间。故选B。
29.Why does the author mention “baked pastries” and the “song”?
A.To illustrate his idea.
B.To clarify a concept.
C.To present his viewpoint.
D.To explain a phenomenon.
答案 A
解析 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段的句子“Recalling a rich episodic memory, you’ll have a feeling of being transported back...For instance, the smell of freshly baked pastries might remind you of having breakfast with your grandmother,or a song by the Stone Roses might evoke your first kiss.”可知,作者先陈述自己的观点,后面通过这两个例子来说明情境记忆的特点,因此作者提到“baked pastries”和“song”是为了说明他的观点。故选A。
30.How can you refresh your memory
A.By making use of your five senses.
B.By contacting your family members.
C.By building mental relations with the present.
D.By putting yourself into the relevant context.
答案 D
解析 细节理解题。根据第四段的句子“This is why,if you have misplaced your keys, getting in touch with the sights, sounds and thoughts from an earlier time period can be an effective way of accessing those memories, enabling you to relive these past experiences.”可知,把自己置身于相关的环境中,利用感官回忆与记忆相关的元素,可以刷新自己的记忆。故选D。
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Old people are likely to get lost.
B.Memory decline is irresistible at 30.
C.Age plays a vital role in memory declining.
D.The prefrontal cortex determines our memory.
答案 C
解析 推理判断题。根据最后一段“On average, episodic memory gets worse as we get older...ageing is a bit like having a dysfunctional time machine that frequently sends us to the wrong place.”可知,随着年龄的增长,情境记忆能力会变差,前额叶皮层的功能会下降,可推知,年龄在记忆衰退中起着重要的作用。故选C。

(2025·福建名校联盟大联考)

Dear James,
Last month,my school organized a month-long reading activity named “Classics for English”.We were encouraged to read selected English masterpieces and discuss them in groups.Every week, there was also this special session where teachers would explain intricate parts of these books at great length.
Through this event,I enhanced my English vocabulary and comprehension. But what is more significant is that I discovered the sheer joy of reading classics. It was fascinating to see how the universal themes in these old stories still resonate in today’s world.Discussing viewpoints with peers was also enlightening,as it exposed me to diverse interpretations and thus enormously broadened my horizons.
Does your school have similar activities?Looking forward to your sharing.
Yours,
Li Hua

Following the boy quickly, she spotted a group of kids crying anxiously by the lake. The boy who had taken her jump rope was sprinting towards them.As Katie neared the water, she saw,to her horror,a little girl was struggling in the water. The boy was throwing one end of Katie’s jump rope out for the child to grab.Fortunately, the little girl caught hold of it.Without a moment’s hesitation,Katie stepped forward to lend a helping hand.Working in tandem, they pulled the child onto the bank.
After making sure the drowning girl was okay, the boy walked up to Katie with the jump rope.Handing it to Katie,he gave a shy smile and apologized,“I’m sorry if I frightened you just now,but I had to act quickly in an emergency.I can’t swim, you know.It was your jump rope that served as a lifeline.” Katie’s initial anger had transformed into appreciation for the boy’s quick response to save the little girl. She replied she didn’t mind her jump rope being snatched at all.Instead, she was glad about the part her jump rope had played in the rescue.
