The therapy began with a simple greeting. Wang Hanlin, strumming his guitar, gently played the opening notes of the Hello Song, and introduced himself with the lyrics: “Hello, my name is….”
Gu, a man in his 80s suffering from mild cognitive impairment — his condition makes him forget not only the names of loved ones, but even his own sometimes — was invited to complete the phrase. Slowly, with some encouragement, he eventually uttered his name. This sparked an emotional response and signaled a shift from passive observation to active participation. It was a small, but crucial step in his recovery.
In the corners of hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, music therapy is tapping into the healing power of sound and rhythm. Wang is a young music therapist who works in a nursing home in Beijing. He has been using songs and therapy initiatives to help spark seniors’ memories and encourage social interactions. “My job is a delicate balance of therapy and artistry, creating a space where music becomes a bridge to connect, comfort and bring joy to those living with the challenges of aging,” he said.
Music can stimulate both emotional and cognitive responses in ways that are not possible through words alone. For patients with a cognitive impairment, music provides a unique way to connect the brain’s neural pathways, often by passing areas that have been damaged by age or illness. It was a combination of music and healing. In clinic treatment, therapists are trained to assess the patients’ strengths and weaknesses and then design activities that target those areas, improving their cognitive or emotional health.
With the fast pace of modern life, many people use music to cope with stress, anxiety or sadness. They listen to their favorite songs to find calm, or feel energized and uplifted. However, engagement with a music therapist is a more structured, therapeutic process aimed at long-term emotional, mental and sometimes physical healing. Music therapy is not limited to appreciation and enjoyment; it is a scientific intervention that engages perception, movement, and social systems.
4. Why did Wang Hanlin play the Hello Song
A. To show off his skills of playing his guitar. B. To help Gu recover from his cognitive impairment.
C. To introduce himself with the lyrics. D. To test Gu’s ability to memorize lyrics quickly.
5. What does the underlined phrase “music becomes a bridge to connect” in Paragraph 3 probably suggest
A. Music therapy can connect damaged neural pathways with new ones.
B. Music therapy is more effective than medication for cognitive disorders.

D. Music therapy acts as a tool to reconnect patients with their identity and others.
6. According to the text, what is one key role of a music therapist in clinic treatment
A. Assessing patients and designing targeted activities.
B. Diagnosing the severity of cognitive impairments.
C. Replacing traditional medical treatments entirely.

A high school student’s parent in Panzhihua, Sichuan province, recently raised concerns on a local c-government platform over a planned two-day weekend policy that will be introduced in regular senior high schools, drawing widespread attention and debate.
The parent said their child is in the second year of senior high school, a crucial period with a heavy academic workload, and expressed worry that the policy might negatively impact their child’s chances of getting into a good university. The national college entrance exam, or gaokao, is the most critical exam in a Chinese student’s academic life. It determines university admission and future career prospects. Fierce competition for limited spots in top universities means rigorous preparation, with students dedicating nearly all their time to studying. In response to the parent’s concern, Panzhihua’s education and sports bureau said the Sichuan provincial education department issued measures strictly prohibiting schools from organizing group tutoring or new courses on weekends, holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
Since the start of this year, many regions across China have gradually rolled out the policy. The policy has sparked mixed reactions from parents, leading to heated discussions online. A parent from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, said the policy is widely welcomed by her child and his classmates, who now have more time to rest. “Studying depends more on self-discipline. Even if you keep your child at school on weekends, it may not necessarily be effective,” she said. But Chen Junlong, a parent from Gongxian county in Sichuan, worries that if the policy is fully implemented, his child may fall behind if others use weekends for extra classes.
Chu Zhaohui, a researcher at the China National Academy of Educational Sciences, said the two-day weekend policy aims to control excessive academic competition and reduce students’ burdens. The 2023 Blue Book of Mental Health in China found that the detection rate of depression among high school students reaches up to 40 percent. Chu said excessive study time may not improve scores and could instead leave students exhausted, reducing learning efficiency. He said the new policy will allow students to participate in social activities, develop hobbies and engage in physical exercise, giving them breathing room for growth.
8. What is the main concern of the parent from Panzhihua regarding the two-day weekend policy
A. A heavy academic workload in senior high school.

9. According to the Sichuan education department, what is officially restricted under the new policy
A. Students attending private tutoring.
B Students participating in social activities.
C. Parents hiring personal tutors.
D. Schools organizing group tutoring or new courses on weekends.

A. Parents’ reaction varied distinctly concerning the new policy.
B. The two-day weekend policy has been successfully carried out across the country.
C. Chu Zhaohui approved of facilitating study efficiency by reducing study time.
D. Dedication is essential to be admitted to a key university.
11. What does the 2023 Blue Book of Mental Health reveal about high school students
A. Over 40% struggle with physical health issues.
B. Excessive study time may not improve scores.
C. More than 40% show signs of depression.
D. Self-discipline promotes academic performance.

Chinese researchers have recently developed a novel wearable artificial intelligence (AI) system to assist blind individuals with navigation, with the findings published Monday in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence.
The system integrates visual, sound, and touch signals, using AI algorithms to scan the surrounding environment. When the wearer approaches obstacles or objects, it sends signals to guide them through movements, object handling, and other visual tasks, thereby enhancing their independence in daily life. For instance, if someone is about to bump into a chair, the system will warn them through voice messages or gentle vibrations (振动), allowing them to avoid danger and handle tasks more easily.
This breakthrough in biomedical engineering was led by Gu Leilei, an associate professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in cooperation with researchers from Fudan University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, East China Normal University, and other partners.
The team innovatively combined advanced AI algorithms with hardware systems. Equipped with a camera for visual data collection, the device processes environmental information through AI, then sends navigation commands via bone-conduction earphones (which don’t block outside sounds) and a soft electronic patch on the wrist. When obstacles or targets are identified, the system generates real-time commands like “advance,” “turn left,” or “grasp” until tasks are completed.
During virtual simulations and real-world tests, the system demonstrated superior performance in experiments involving both humanoid robots and visually impaired participants. Humanoid robots using this technology successfully moved through complicated hospital hallways, avoiding obstacles 98.7% of the time. Meanwhile, blind participants completed difficult object-finding tasks with an 89% success rate. Notably, the system’s active learning capability allows continuous performance improvement through user interaction. Clinical evaluations showed a 40% reduction in collision frequency compared to traditional white cane navigation.
This innovation not only redefines assistive technology for the visually impaired but also pioneers new applications for human-machine cooperation in medical rehabilitation and smart city infrastructure. The team has initiated partnerships with disability organizations to conduct large-scale field trials, aiming for regulatory approval and commercialization within two years.
12. What is the main purpose of the wearable AI system mentioned in the text
A. To replace traditional white canes completely.
B. To combine sensory signals for navigation assistance.
C. To monitor users’ health conditions remotely.
D. To provide entertainment for blind individuals.
13. How does the system help users avoid obstacles
A. By physically moving them away from danger.
B. By automatically stopping their movement.
C. By sending voice messages or vibrations.
D. By changing the environment’s layout.
14. Why might researchers have chosen bone-conduction earphones instead of regular head phones
A. To ensure users can still hear environmental sounds.
B. Because they are cheaper to produce.
C. To make the device look more futuristic.
D. Because they provide louder audio feedback.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the breakthrough of this assistive technology
A. Disapproving. B. Promising. C. Indifferent. D. Conservative.

Victor had spent all summer thinking about seventh grade, and most of those thoughts had been about Teresa. She had smiled at him once after math class last year, and that single moment had fueled his daydreams for months. Now, on the first day of school, he spotted her near the lockers, her dark hair pulled back with a yellow ribbon that matched her notebook.
When he walked into French class and saw Teresa sitting near the window, Victor’s palms began to sweat. Mr. Bueller asked if anyone had studied French before. Victor’s hand shot up before he could stop himself. He’d never taken a French lesson in his life, but maybe Teresa would notice him if he seemed smart.
“Parlez-vous fran ais ” Mr. Bueller asked directly at Victor.
The classroom suddenly felt extremely hot. Victor swallowed hard and muttered something that sounded like “Oui, je…la fenêtre…le crayon…” mixing the few French words he’d heard in cartoons.
A giggle started in the back row, then spread through the class like wildfire. Even Mr. Bueller’s mustache twitched with suppressed amusement. Teresa turned in her seat, her eyebrows raised not in admiration but confusion. Victor wished he could melt into the floor tiles.
When the bell rang, Victor bolted for the door, his ears burning. He’d ruined everything. Why had he thought pretending would work As he shoved books into his locker with shaky hands, he heard quick footsteps behind him.
“Hey, Victor ” Teresa’s voice made him freeze. “That was… interesting in French class.” She tilted her head. “Do you really speak French ”
Victor’s mouth went dry. This was his chance — one more lie could keep up the act, but the weight of his earlier embarrassment pressed down on him.

Attention Should Be Paid to Spelling
Nowadays, students attach less importance to the spelling of words in the process of English study, greatly influencing students’ writing and bringing on worries among teachers. As I see it, it’s high time that our school took action to improve our English spelling.
First of all, it’s essential for teachers to modify exams to add some factors into spelling, which will help students to pay more attention to it. Besides, the school should also set effective mechanisms to help teachers as well as the students to realize the importance. Finally, varieties of activities, ranging from spelling competitions to exhibitions, are sure to make students become interested in spelling.
If measures are taken right away, we can make a great difference to our English spelling in the near future.
47.
Victor’s fingers tightened around the locker door as he made his decision. “Actually, no,” he admitted, forcing himself to meet Teresa’s eyes. His voice trembled slightly but he continued to explain that he had wanted to impress her. Then Teresa’s expression shifted from surprise to something softer, perhaps even admiration, saying, “Honesty is more impressive.” Victor felt his cheeks grow warm, but this time it wasn’t from embarrassment. As Teresa walked away, he noticed how her yellow ribbon caught the sunlight — a sight far brighter than any lie he could have told. (81 words)
Two weeks later, Victor was waiting outside the library when Teresa arrived with two cups of hot chocolate and a worn French dictionary. “I thought we could study together,” she said, handing him a cup. The afternoon sunlight filtered through the trees as they settled at a study table. Victor traced his finger along the phonetic guides Teresa had penciled in, each mark representing hours of her own learning. They spent the afternoon practicing basic phrases, with Victor carefully repeating after Teresa. When he correctly pronounced a French word for the first time, Teresa clapped excitedly. Victor realized that being himself and making real effort was far more rewarding than pretending. (88 words)
