We’re often told to follow our dreams, and one person in Canada has done just that after building a wonderland for animals. In his own backyard, the eight water features which Robert Perkins dug into the ground are now a shelter for birds, frogs, beavers(河狸) and other animals in the middle of suburban development. But for Perkins, creating habitat for wildlife is not only about doing his part to help the environment. It’s a labor of love for a woman he met when he was 16 years old.
Perkins met Rhonda in 1974 and the two of them hit it off. They both loved animals, and she always wished to have a place where they could live in harmony with the land.Rhonda, whom Perkins stayed with all his life, passed away in 2006.Perkins resolved to build a wonderland where her spirit could stay in peace.
Ignoring planning departments and neighbors alike,Perkins began digging large holes for water to flow.Over the course of nine years his property went from being a neighborly headache to a perfect home for wildlife.
Perkins says he won’t take all the credit for the wetland he built. When Perkins started creating the wildlife habitat in the early 2000s,a family of beavers got wind of it soon and claimed the land.“When we built our subdivisions,we cleared all the trees, dried the hills, drove all the water down to the lakes...In turn, the beavers helped dam(筑坝) and purify the water.”
Wetland habitats not only attract wildlife, but probably offer the most complete package of ecosystem services, including preventing pollution, enriching the soil, and promoting the well-being of wildlife species.
Perkins says he doesn’t need to wonder what Rhonda might think of the place;he feels her presence whenever he walks alone among the trees, the grass, and the ponds, looking at birds or beavers, and listening to the songbirds and frogs.Perkins hopes his project will one day become an educational place that local people can visit to learn about the importance of wetlands.
24.Why did Perkins build the water features
A.To fulfill his childhood dream.
B.To show his love for his wife.
C.To preserve endangered wildlife.
D.To adapt to suburban development.
25.Which best describes Perkins’ wetland building process
A.Effortless but creative.
B.Discouraging but efficient.
C.Painful but influential.
D.Demanding but rewarding.
26.What can we infer about building the wetland from Perkins’ words
A.Perkins had a strategic plan for it.
B.Human’s role in it was overvalued.
C.Nature itself also played a part in it.
D.Beavers were invited to help with it.
27.What is Perkins’expectation of the wetland
A.To serve as an inspiration.
B.To be a recreational spot.
C.To bring economic value.
D.To help spread his story.

Sometimes called “Earth’s twin,” Venus is similar to our world in size and composition. The two rocky planets are also roughly the same distance from the sun,and both have an atmosphere. While Venus’s cold and unpleasant landscape does make it seem far less like Earth, scientists recently detected another striking similarity between the two—the presence of active volcanoes.
When NASA’s Magellan mission mapped much of the planet with radar in the 1990s,it revealed an unexpectedly youthful surface—there were surprisingly a few craters(火山口)which suggested active geologic(地质的) processes.Although few missions have visited Venus since then, researchers have continued to mine the collection of data from Magellan.
Using this decades-old data, planetary scientist Robert Herrick discovered that a volcano called Maat Mons is alive with volcanic activity. In this case, lava(岩浆) flows moved for eight months during an imaging cycle from 1990 to 1992,according to a study published in Science in 2023.The findings are the first real evidence that volcanoes have erupted on Venus during modern times.
What’s more, volcanic activity on Venus could be even more common and dramatic than on Earth.A study published in JGR Planets in 2023 mapped out enormous potential volcanic features on Venus’s surface, and there’s a good chance that some of them could be active today. On top of that, another 2023 study, also in JGR Planets, found that the very high surface temperature on Venus, over 900 degrees Fahrenheit, allows lava flows to slowly leak out.
A list of new missions are headed to Venus over the next decade, including NASA’s VERITAS mission, which aims to map the planet’s surface to better understand its geologic history. These projects should settle the question of how the paths of Venus and Earth divided so sharply, with one becoming a hell and the other able to harbor life, and confirm whether volcanoes are still erupting on the planet today.
28.Why does the writer mention Venus is Earth’s twin in paragraph 1
A.To prove a theory.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To clarify a concept.
D.To make predictions.
29.What can we learn from paragraphs 3 and 4
A.Robert Herrick’s discovery was based on previous data.
B.The findings are the first evidence of volcanoes on Venus.
C.There are huger volcanoes on Venus than on Earth.
D.Volcanic activities on Venus are as common as on Earth.
30.What is the significance of NASA’s future study of Venus
A.Mapping the volcanoes on Venus with accuracy.
B.Analyzing how volcanoes came into existence.
C.Understanding how Venus and Earth evolved differently.
D.Confirming whether Venus is suitable for humans to live.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Venus Is Earth’s Twin
B.Venus Is an Awful Hell
C.Venus Is a Youthful Planet
D.Venus Is Volcanically Active

As most Americans spend at least 50% of their food budget dining out, public criticism falls on restaurants to help consumers make healthier food choices. The Menu Labeling Final Rule has come into effect, requiring restaurants with more than 20 locations to show the calories of food on menus.
By representing these values in a discrepant way—using physically larger numbers on the page for lower-calorie options, and smaller numbers for high-calorie foods—businesses can shift customers’ preferences toward healthier food, according to Ruiying Cai from the Washington State University.
In their study,Cai and her colleagues asked participants to choose between a less healthy item and a healthier option after randomly assigning them to two groups. In the first group, calorie counts and font sizes rose and fell together. In the second group, the size became larger as the calorie count fell.Researchers also asked participants questions to assess their health-consciousness.
Results showed participants in the second group, who saw low calorie counts printed in large sizes, were more likely to adopt the healthier option. Moreover, less health-conscious participants were the most affected, while people with more health awareness were less influenced since they already favored healthier food.
This research adjusted customer behaviors by creating a Stroop effect.Named after psychologist J.Ridley Stroop, the Stroop effect refers to a delay in reaction to mismatch in its classic form. For example,if the word “purple” is written in green,it takes respondents longer time to identify the color than if the word and the color match.Similarly, the effect is observed when the physical size of the number does not match its number in this study.
“Restaurants are interested in encouraging customers to make healthier choices,”Cai said. However, simply labeling the food as healthy may not have the intended effect.“Healthy food items could be profitable for restaurants, but whenever a ‘healthy’ label is attached, people may assume it does not taste good,” she explained.“We’re trying to provide restaurants with indirect suggestions, rather than saying it out loud.”
32.What does the underlined word “discrepant” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Creative. B.Relative.
C.Misleading. D.Conflicting.
33.Which of the following types of customers would be affected most from the research
A.Strict diet followers.
B.Convenience food fans.
C.Homema de meal lovers.
D.Health magazine readers.
34.What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A.The significance of research results.
B.The measurement of response delays.
C.The psychological basis of the study design.
D.The influential variations of the Stroop effect.
35.Which of the following might be Cai’s suggestion for restaurants
A.Use font magic to drive healthier choices.
B.Pay more attention to the taste of the food.
C.Create a quiet dining atmosphere for customers.
D.Attach “healthy” labels to the food on the menu.

Two-Man Ironman
On Sept.17,2022,Jeff and his son,Johnny, set out to begin the first of three legs of the Ironman competition in Cambridge, where competitors must complete a 140-mile of swimming, bicycling and running in under 17 hours.Johnny was born with cerebral palsy(脑瘫) and could barely walk a few steps with the help of a rolling walker. But his dream of being a runner never stopped.
Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete,Jeff helped him engage in running. They began waking up at 4 am,so Jeff could run while pushing his son in a special wheelchair called a racing chair.Every morning, they drove themselves to run increasingly longer distances.Soon, they were entering 5K races, then on to Ironman competition. At first,Jeff would act as Johnny’s arms and legs, carrying the weight of his son.Gradually,Johnny could even run a few miles using a rolling walker.
The race began with a 2.4-mile swim in the Choptank River.Jeff helped Johnny into a kayak(皮划艇).With one end of a rope tied to a harness around his back and the other end to the kayak,Jeff eased himself into the water.Swimming while dragging another person was tough enough—Jeff also had to struggle with jellyfish.“I occupied my mind by counting the number of times I got stung(蛰),” he said.
The pair completed the swim in 90 minutes, and it was on to the next leg:a 112-mile bicycle ride.Their custom-built bike has an extra-strong frame and an additional seat in the back for Johnny that faces backward, better to cheer on other competitors.
After completing the tough bike section in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race—a 26.2-mile marathon with Jeff pushing Johnny in the racing chair. They’d been competing for 10.5 hours, leaving another 6.5 hours to make their time.

W:I’m trying to get a book published, but I don’t know how to begin.Should I call a publisher or try to advertise it myself
M:Maybe you should ask Mr Wyatt. He knows a lot about the book industry.
W:Good idea!I always love his English classes. He’s the reason why I started writing!
M:I’d like to read your book sometime though. How long is it?I usually just read books that are less than 200 pages.Remember that book Ulysses which we read in Mr Wyatt’s class? That is over 700 pages!
W:Oh yeah, that took forever to read.My book is not as thick as that. It’s probably about half that long.I won’t have an actually printed book to give you,at least in a few more months. The only things I have are computer files and my handwritten copies.
M:Can you just give me a computer file
W:Yes.I’ll do that right away. Please give me your honest opinion after you finish reading it.It is the only way I can get better.

W:OK,so our topic for the presentation is bees. How many main points do we have
M:Three.
W:There’s a lot of information, but we only have eight minutes.
M:I think we can organize the whole presentation around our three main points.
W:Should we start by showing that bees are an important natural resource? They help plants reproduce.Without bees,a lot of crops would be more expensive to grow.
M:Let’s make that clear so people understand why we all need bees.
W:Now,I’ve found a report that says a lot of bees are dying right now.The report has a lot of statistics about population numbers.Should we use that
M:Well,I’m worried those statistics might be confusing.Mr Lee said we have to make our presentation brief and to the point, and that’s important for our grades.
W:OK.Maybe we could just put some of the statistics in a diagram.
M:Let’s do that. And we could show some photos of bees.
W:Good idea.
M:So for the last part,we could make a list of what people can do to help bees.
Text 10
W:Lisa is my best friend. She moved to Chicago from London with her family at a very young age.We first met when we were both just five years old.Her family lived next to mine, and we became friends as soon as we knew each other. We went to the same kindergarten and always played together. Now twelve years has passed. We have been friends all these years and we are still neighbors. However,at the beginning of this year,I found that Lisa didn’t hang out with me as much as before.Whenever I asked her to hang out with me,she always said she was busy. One day,I asked her to go to a movie with me,but she said she had to prepare for an exam at home. However, later that day,I saw her walking on the street with another girl.It really upset me,so I just ran up to her and asked her why she lied to me.She apologized and said she just wanted to make more friends. She didn’t tell me the truth because she was afraid she’d break my heart. After knowing the reason,I told her it was alright.Everyone needs new friends.I have also made some new friends. Now Lisa and I are still good friends. But we both have more friends than before.

语篇解读 这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项研究——菜单上标记热量多少的数字大小是如何影响顾客对食物的选择的。
32.What does the underlined word “discrepant” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Creative. B.Relative.
C.Misleading. D.Conflicting.
答案 D
解析 词义猜测题。根据画线词下文“using physically larger numbers on the page for lower-calorie options, and smaller numbers for high-calorie foods”可知,这是对 discrepant way的解释,即用大数字表示低卡路里,小数字表示高卡路里,这是一种相冲突的方式,故推知discrepant应表示“矛盾的,相差的”,与conflicting同义。故选D。
33.Which of the following types of customers would be affected most from the research
A.Strict diet followers.
B.Convenience food fans.
C.Homema de meal lovers.
D.Health magazine readers.

答案 A
解析 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, simply labeling the food as healthy may not have the intended effect.‘...but whenever a ‘healthy’ label is attached, people may assume it does not taste good,’”可知,她认为给食物贴上“健康”的标签并不能鼓励顾客去选择它。再根据第二段说明了食物标签上字体的大小会影响人们对健康食物的选择可推知,她可能会建议餐馆利用字体的魔力来促使顾客做出更健康的食物选择。故选A。

My desk has accompanied me for many years, and some of the items on it do have special meanings for me.
Of all the things on my desk, the clock on the left side is the most meaningful for me because it is an obvious reminder of the saying:Time and tide wait for no man.Whenever I want to be lazy, the sound of the clock tells me to value time.Besides, the bookshelf in the middle indicates the power of knowledge. The books on it,whether textbooks or extracurricular ones, satisfy my curiosity, offer me excellent stories and enrich my life.I can’t imagine how boring my life would be without them.
I hope my desk will always be a part of my life, witness my progress and lead me to a successful life.

参考范文
But at Mile 19,Jeff began to panic, convinced they were going too slow.Somehow he found the energy to pick up the pace, puffing and panting.Spotting sweat trickling down from his father’s wrinkled forehead,Johnny offered to run on his own with his rolling walker.Jeff stopped to help Johnny out of his racing chair, handing the rolling walker to his son. After years of painstaking work,Johnny increased his step counts and was determined to finish his race by himself.Johnny saw the clock ticking down and worried they wouldn’t make the cut-off.However,with Dad’s encouraging words echoing in mind constantly,Johnny managed to carry on.
After 16 hours,55 minutes and 35 seconds, father and son crossed the finish line together. As the crowd engulfed and cheered on an overwhelmed Johnny,a weary Jeff kept a low profile.“My father didn’t want his finish line moment,” said Johnny, tears in eyes.“He wanted it to be mine. What he taught me is that it’s much easier to take on life one step at a time than it is to think about the huge task ahead of you.” Small steps lead to bigger steps. To Johnny, the competition represented what his whole life with cerebral palsy had been about:hard work, dedication, optimism, and determination.
