Later, Jennifer tried to help a boy in her neighborhood. “He was having trouble reading,” she said. “But his parents didn't know he had dyslexia.” She also wanted to help other kids and their parents. Then the girl decided to do this by writing a book about her story.

California recently passed a new law. It requires the state's clothing companies to get clothing reused, repaired and recycled. The law is the first of its kind in the United States. It aims to deal with the growing problem of fashion waste.
Every year, millions of tons of unwanted clothes end up in landfills(垃圾填埋场) across the state. Some of them get burned. Some are given to second-hand shops. When second-hand shops can't resell these clothes, they' re often shipped to developing countries. In Ghana and Chile, for example, unwanted clothes are piled up along rivers.
The problem of clothing waste has been getting worse with the trend of“fast fashion”. Under this trend, low-cost clothing moves quickly from designers to stores. Such clothing is only worn or used a few times.
“We are hopeful that this nation-leading law will reduce clothing waste,” said Fiona Hines. She has worked hard to support the passing of the law. “We also hope that, in the future, companies will produce quality clothes. We could repair, reuse and recycle them when they reach their end of life.”
Under the new law, companies that make clothing in California are required to create an organization(组织) by 2026. This non-profit (非营利的) group would set up hundreds of collection sites at second-hand shops. People can drop off unwanted clothes at these places. They could also choose to mail them back. The group will take other steps in California to take back and recycle their products by 2030.

Do you wear glasses If yes, would you like to have surgery (外科手术) so you don't need to wear them anymore Many believe that surgery can fix the problem forever, but that's not always the case.
Most people wear glasses because of nearsightedness (近视). When we see things, light comes into our eyes and focuses on the retina(视网膜). But for people with nearsightedness, in their eyes, light focuses in front of the retina. This makes faraway things seem blurry but close things seem clear.
Surgery can treat this. Xu Jiayi, a 19-year-old student from Beijing, had the surgery five months ago during the winter vacation. “After the surgery, I can see very clearly. Life is more convenient without having to wear eyeglasses,” said Xu.
However, the process is not as easy as you might think. Xu said that her eyes hurt badly right after the survey. Also, she needed to use medicines for at least three months. “At first, there were four types of medicines, and then the number became six,” she said. These medicines help the eyes heal and prevent eye problems.
Moreover, if you don't look after your eyes well, nearsightedness may return even after surgery. “Because I use my eyes too much both at work and at home, things have started to look blurry to me again,” said Du Anni, 32, who had the surgery nine years ago.
“Instead of fixing nearsightedness, the surgery just lets you take off your glasses,” said Wei Wenbin from the Beijing Tongren Hospital in a speech in July. He said that the surgery doesn't fix the changes in the eye's structure.
13. How does the writer start the text
A. By showing ideas. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By telling a story.
14.How does light normally focus in the eyes when we see things
15. What does the underlined word“heal” mean
A. To become healthy again. B. To become happy again.
C. To put an end to something. D. To become easier to bear.
16. According to the text, what is a possible reason for nearsightedness to return after surgery
A. Not taking good care of eyes. B. The age of the patient.
C. The type of surgery performed. D. The length of time after surgery.

Names can affect how people look, according to a study by scientists in Israel. The scientists asked people to match names to pictures of adults’ faces. 17 However, this was much harder with children's photos.
The scientists then wrote a computer program to compare people's faces with their names. As it turned out, adults with the same name look more similar than those with different names. 18 This made the scientists think that we may grow into our names. “This is a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy (自证预言)’,” the leading scientist told a newspaper. In other words, without knowing why, we may have been changing our looks to match what other people expect from our names.
19 An American study found that “Virginias” were more likely to live in Virginia Beach in Virginia, the US. Also, people named Dennis were more likely to become dentists. This is because we like things that remind us of our names.
However, this does not mean our looks and lives are totally decided by our names. As William Shakespeare said, “ 20 ”

What's more, home robots can accompany people and make them feel less lonely. They can also help people stay in touch with other people. — Emily No! Dear Eric,
How is everything going I'm writing to tell you something about the family dinner on Chinese New Year's Eve.
On that day, family get together to enjoy the dinner. There are all kinds of delicious food and drinks. In my hometown, niangao is the main dish, which means“having more luck and becoming better”. Another main dish is fish, which means“having more than we need”. At dinner we receive not only best wishes, but also lucky money from our parents.
I hope you can come and enjoy the dinner with me this year. I'm looking forward to your reply.
