Can you guess their meanings
Some time ago, I was chatting with a Chinese friend about the top attractions in New York. When he asked me to compare two art museums, I naturally replied, “Ah, they're just like chalk and cheese.” My answer left my friend scratching(挠) his head. Although he was really good at English, the expression“like chalk and cheese” went completely over his head. That's when I realized how easy it is to confuse people from non-English-speaking countries with our idioms (习语). But learning idioms can be a lot of fun! Would you like to find out more about them
Let's start with “like chalk and cheese”. It's used to say that two things are completely different. It's not hard to understand if you think about it— cheese is soft and creamy, while chalk is dry, dusty and hard. They couldn't be more different!
Now, can you guess the meaning of“like a dog with a bone” It's easy if you' ve ever tried to take a tasty bone away from a dog. This idiom means that someone is stubborn(固执的) and won't let a topic or task go easily. You get the picture, right
Another idiom I'd like to show today is“as the crow flies”. I remember getting this one wrong on a primary school test. This expression refers to traveling the shortest distance between two points— in a straight line, or the most direct route.
There are too many interesting idioms to explore in one short article. If you' re curious(好奇的), look up the meanings of these idioms below and learn to use them.
▲a dog's dinner ▲the bee's knees
▲beat about the bush ▲be all mouth and trousers
Idioms add spice to language. Have fun with them!

Are you dreaming of a vacation to a warm place next to the sea
You may be thinking of sitting under a palm tree(棕榈树), or next to a banana plant. Or you may dream of walking on a faraway island in the tropics among colorful flowers.
Tropical(热带的) plants make us feel like we are in warm places with a pleasing climate. In cold climates, these plants can grow outside during the summer. But they may die in cold weather.
A gardening expert, Jessica Damiano, says some people in the United States have to treat tropical plants like annuals because cold winters can bring them so much harm that they can't live.An annual is one that lives for one year or season.
Let's take the canna as an example.
If you buy potted cannas, bring them inside. Place them near a sunny window, and water them often as directed.
If the plants are too big for the house, leave them outdoors until the first frost(霜冻) causes their leaves to turn into other colors. Then cut the plants to about 15centimeters tall and dig them up.
Wash and separate their roots, and let them dry completely. Then prepare boxes with some air holes to store the roots. Place the box in a cool, dark place.
Examine them once a month, add water if they seem to be drying out, and throw out any bad piece. Plant them outdoors and fertilize them when the soil has warmed up in spring. You can also give them a head start by planting them indoors in a pot a month earlier. Set them by your sunniest window or under special lights. Keep the soil a little wet.
13. How does the writer start this text
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example.
C. By listing some numbers. D. By asking a question.
14. What can we know from Paragraph 3
A. It's not easy for the tropical plants to live during cold days.
B. Living in warm places is pleasing.
C. Tropical plants can't grow outside during the summer.
D. Tropical plants can grow well in cold climates.
15. How often should you look over the plants after placing the box in a cool, dark place
A. Once a week. B. Once a month.
C. Twice a week. D. Twice a month.
16. What's the best title for this text
A. How to Plant Tropical Plants
B. How to Save Tropical Plants

To become a vet, you'll need to...
My name is Arvid Edward. I've been a vet for over 25 years. Now I work at an animal hospital in Atlanta, USA. I work with many different animals, such as horses, cows and birds. Not long ago,for example, I treated a rabbit for a tooth problem. 17
Develop an interest.
You can take biology and zoology courses in high school in your free time. 18 You can also volunteer at an animal hospital. By following a vet for a day, you can find out if you really like the job.

You will need to learn about the habitats and lifestyles of many different animals. At the best veterinary schools, there's a lot of hands-on work. For example, you' ll dissect(解剖) dead animals and study how their bodies work. You have to learn this with some degree of perfection (完美).When you get a job, you must use this knowledge with few or no mistakes.
Take care of yourself.
Being a vet can be stressful. Many of the pets you treat will get better, but not all of them. You can't bring your feelings to work. That doesn't mean you don't care, but bad feelings may cause you to make wrong decisions when you treat an animal. 20 All you can do is to try your best at work. When you leave the hospital, don't bring the stress from work back home with you.
A. Bad feelings can also influence you.
B. Be prepared to work hard in veterinary school (兽医学校).

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my support for the recent decision by some schools to extend the break time between classes from 10 minutes to 15 minutes.
In my opinion, this change is beneficial for several reasons. Firstly, longer recess allows students to relax well, which is important for keeping focus during classes. Secondly, it provides a chance for students to engage in physical activities.Lastly, the extended time helps enhance students’ communication skills with others.
In conclusion, I believe that increasing the recess period to 15 minutes is a positive step towards helping the overall students develop.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hui
