The Spring Festival
The Spring Festival, also known as the lunar New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China. According to Chinese legends, Nian was originally the name of a monster beast. On the eve of the Spring Festival, it is a folk custom to stay up late or even all night. A get-together banquet is usually a must for every Chinese family. The most popular food is jiaozi, or dumplings. People wear new clothes, set off firecrackers and post couplets on the gates. Moreover, people go out to visit relatives and friends. For many children, The Spring Festival offers them a special chance to receive “lucky money”.

The painting journey
A family reunion dinner is an important tradition to celebrate Spring Festival. Nowadays, some people choose to have the dinner in a restaurant, but not everyone is keen on this idea.
Wang peng, software engineer
Eating out for the Spring Festival family dinner only changes the form of this tradition, but the love between the family members remains the same.
Disadvantages of eating at home: prepare clean up
Advantages of eating out:
a good choice
have nothing to do
the same people
without tiring cooking
the dishes taste better

The process is even more important than the dinner itself.

but for the opportunity…

sit around the table
enjoy the food toast each other
It just won’t feel like Spring Festival having the dinner out. The process of preparing the dinner together is more important than the dinner itself.

What do you think the retired teacher means by “to me, the
process is even more important than the dinner itself”
For him, the sweet memories of having the whole family getting together and preparing for the dinner are more important than the delicious food itself.
2. Which of the two opinions do you agree with Why
Open answers.
eg I agree with the one of having the dinner at home, because I think the time spent doing sth together with family members at home is very precious.
or I am in favor of Wang Peng’s opinion. Our world is developing and we need to change with the times. I think eating out for the Spring Festival family dinner is a good choice, because we can get rid of the tiring cooking and we needn’t clean up after the dinner, and the dishes taste better! Besides, I believe that eating out doesn’t change the love between family members.
3. How would you describe a Spring Festival family dinner to a friend from overseas
Open answers.
eg. Chinese People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members have a reunion dinner together. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded, for in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively "ji", "yu" and "doufu," mean auspiciousness, abundance and wealth.
adv.在海外,在外国
4. Can you think of any other Chinese festival traditions Share them with the class.
Open answers.
The Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the "reversed fu" is homophonic with "fu comes", both being pronounced as "fudaole." What's more, two big red lanterns can be raised on both sides of the front door. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass .
Time for a Change
A family dinner (家宴/年夜饭) is an important tradition to celebrate Spring Festival. Nowadays, some people choose to have the dinner in a restaurant, but not everyone is keen on this idea(不是每个人都支持这个想法). What do our readers think
Dear Editor,
We have eaten out (eat out) for the Spring Festival family dinner for the last three years, and we have enjoyed it no less than eating at home. I don’t understand why some people refuse to embrace the change(接受改变).
Can’t they admit that the preparations for the dinner are hard work I really don’t think it’s worth the effort (值得花精力)of spending so much time preparing for a single meal, and then another hour cleaning up the mess (收拾残局;收拾干净) after it’s over. We work all year, so why can’t one day be about spending time with family and relaxing
Eating out is a good choice and it has nothing to do with loss of traditions(和丢弃传统无关). We still have the dinner with the same people, just in a different place. The occasion (场合) is more enjoyable without all that tiring cooking, and the dishes taste better!
In my opinion, what or where we eat on Spring Festival Eve really doesn’t matter. Eating out may change the form of this tradition(这种传统的形式), but the love between the family members sitting around the table together remains (仍然是) the same.
Wang Peng, software engineer
Dear Editor,
For this year’s Spring Festival family dinner, my son has booked (预定) a table at the best restaurant in town, but I’m a bit unhappy about it. For me, it just won’t feel like Spring Festival having the diner out.
When I was a little boy, the dinner on the eve of Spring Festival was what I looked forward to most. It was not only for the delicious food that we seldom got to eat, but for the opportunity to have our whole family gathered together(让全家人团聚在一起). I would run around the house, listening to the adults chatting about their year. I’d get under my mother’s feet in the kitchen, watching her make dumplings. She’d put tokens (象征; “彩头”) in some dumplings: candies for a sweet life and peanuts (坚果) for a long and healthy one. In the evening, all of us would sit around the table, enjoying the food and being together again. We toasted each other(互相敬酒), we laughed, and the simple, homemade dishes (家常菜) tasted more delicious than anything cooked by a top chef.
I hope my children and their children will still value our memories of preparing the dinner together(珍视全家人一起准备年夜饭的回忆). To me, the process is even more important than the dinner itself.

Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals for Chinese people all over the world. During the Spring Festival, there are many traditions and people may celebrate in slightly different ways. Among these traditions, I think the family dinner on the Spring Festival Eve plays a leading role.
China is a country with more than 5,000 years’ history. Having a big dinner on the Spring Festival Eve is a tradition which has been kept for thousands of years and Chinese people value the importance of home and the respect to the elders. Nowadays, with the growing pace of life in cities, we seldom have time to have dinner with our family. Therefore, the family dinner provides an opportunity for us to express our love to each other. We can also enjoy the well-prepared delicious food, especially some specific food that has certain symbolic lucky meanings.
One Sample
When I was a little boy, I was always looking forward to the family dinner on Spring Festival Eve. Interested in cooking, I could watch how the adults prepared for every tasty dish. Wandering in the kitchen, I would have a taste of every newly-cooked dish, a bite of this, a piece of that. When it was time for dinner, I had already had enough and couldn’t eat anything, watching my cousins enjoying the feast. Seeing this, my grandma would jokingly say: “You will be a great chef when you grow up! Next Spring Festival, you should cook for us all.” The family all laughed and the dishes tasted more delicious.
For Chinese people, the family dinner on the Spring Festival Eve means more than a meal. It connects every member in the family; it is heavy with sweet memories of the past; most importantly, it passes the traditions through generations forever.

Dear editor,
These days, a growing number of people overseas are celebrating Chinese Spring Festival, an important traditional festival that features hope, reunion and happiness. A wide variety of Chinese cultural activities, such as gala performances, film shows, temple fairs and other forms of celebrations, are held overseas. There are several reasons accounting for this phenomenon.
To start with, the spread of Chinese Spring Festival is partly due to the increasing overseas Chinese population. What’s more, more and more countries have noticed or benefited from China’s growing economic and political influence, so they are also embracing our culture and traditions. Also, many overseas stores and recreational venues are taking the opportunity to profit from the celebration. Last but not least, the Chinese government and various institutions have made great efforts to help the festival go global.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s not only a good opportunity for foreigners to know about China, but a sign of China’s growing influence on the world. I hope everyone can do his or her part to bring more Chinese traditions worldwide, and more people around the globe will embrace the diversity of culture.

Dear editor,
It seems that more and more countries around the world are holding celebrations of Chinese Spring Festival. I think the reasons are as follows:
First and foremost, millions of Chinese spend their holiday overseas during the Spring Festival, bringing huge tourism revenues(旅游收入) to their popular destinations, which greatly contributes to the spread of Chinese Spring Festival.
