Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age novel told through a series of vignettes.
The story follows the observations and feelings of Esperanza Cordero, a Mexican-American girl growing up in a
poor Latino neighborhood in Chicago. Esperanza longs for a home of her own- one that represents stability, beauty,
and freedom- but the house on Mango Street symbolizes none of these. Instead, it reflects her family’s struggles
with poverty and societal marginalization (边缘化).
Throughout the book, Esperanza observes the lives of those around her. She witnesses the trapped existence
of women in her community, such as her friend Sally, who marries young to escape abuse but loses her
independence. These observations shape Esperanza’s desire to break free from cultural expectations. Writing
becomes her tool for self-expression and liberation. Though she feels a deep connection to her neighborhood, she
swears, “I will not belong to Mango Street, but it will belong to me.”
The novel blends (混合) poetic language with raw honesty, addressing themes of identity, gender roles, and
the immigrant experience. Cisneros uses symbolic elements, like the recurring image of windows (representing
both imprisonment and hope), to highlight the tension between dreams and reality. While Esperanza’s journey is
deeply personal, it also speaks to universal struggles of finding one’s voice and place in the world.
24. The word “vignettes” in paragraph 1 most likely means ______.
A. long, vivid chapters
B. short, descriptive scenes
C. poetic rhymes
D. historical facts
25. What can be inferred about Esperanza’s future

B. She will likely leave Mango Street to pursue her dreams.
C. She will reject her cultural heritage entirely.
D. She will prioritize culture expectation over independence.

A vast piece of dark rocky glass littering a Chilean desert has remained a mystery for a decade. Some
researchers have assumed that the glass resulted from ancient grass fires, as the region wasn’t always desert. And
it’s been suggested that widespread fires may have burnt hot enough to melt the sandy soil into large thick glassy
pieces.
But the new research conducted by Schultz and colleagues found that simple fires were an impossible
formation theory. The glass shows evidence of having been twisted, folded, rolled and even thrown while still in
molten (熔化的) form. That’s consistent with a large incoming comet (彗星) and an airburst, which would have
been accompanied by tornado-force winds. The analysis of the glass made Schultz and colleagues convinced that
the grassfire idea didn’t hold water. Through analyzing dozens of samples taken from the glass across the region,
they found minerals in the samples which typically appear in temperature over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit— far
hotter than what could be generated by grass fires.
“Those minerals tell us that this object has all the markings of a comet,” said Scott Harris, a planetary geologist
and also the co-author of the study. “To have the same minerals we saw in the samples is really powerful evidence
that what we’re seeing is the result of a cometary airburst.”
“More work needs to be done to establish the exact age of the glass,” says Scultz. But the tentative dating puts
the impact right around the time when large mammals (哺乳动物) disappeared from the region. It’s too soon to
say if there was a casual connection or not. Scultz hopes that further research may help to make the answer come
to light.
“There may be lots of these explosion scars out there, but until now we haven’t had enough evidence to make
us believe they were truly related to airburst events,” Scultz said. “I think this site provides a pattern which helps
improve our impact models and will help identify similar sites elsewhere and reveal the potential risk posed by
such events.”
28.What might the rocky glass be formed from according to previous studies
A. The grass ash. B. The tiny glassy rocks.
C. The sand of a Chilean desert. D. The sandy soil of grassy land.
29. How did scientists of the new research figure out the origin of the glass
A. By testing the melting point of the glass.
B. By tracking the path of tornado-force winds.
C. By analyzing the chemical substance of the glass.
D. By reproducing a scene similar to a cometary airburst.
30. What might be the purpose of Scultz’s future research
A. To calculate the size of the glass.
B. To confirm the exact time of the impact.
C. To identify potentially dangerous comets.
D. To explore the evolution of large mammals.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Uncovering the Mystery of Black Glass in a Desert
B. Restoring a Vast Glass Piece on a Chilean Desert
C. A Piece of Rocky Glass Caused by Grass Fires
4
D. Serious Risks of Comet Explosion Events

Some Canary Island ants have found an unexpected guest―plastic waste. Plastic entanglement (缠住 ) is
commonly associated with ocean life. Finding plastic-wrapped ants suggested that human’s harmful plastic
pollution affected a wider range of wildlife than previously thought, researchers reported in Ecological
Entomology.
Scientists noticed the poor insects while studying 113 ants they’d collected from the volcanic island of La
Palma. One Lasius grandis ant was wrapped in a thin, red fiber, while a Monomorium ant in a black fiber.
Chemical and physical analyses of the fibers around the ants’ bodies and legs proved they were made of plastic.
Plastic waste is known to be treacherous for seabirds and ocean life, but it can cause problems for land
animals too, blocking camels’ organs and killing songbirds. Scientists have also documented some insects
associated with plastics. Caddisfly larvae (石蛾幼虫 ) could use small plastic parts to make their protective body
coverings, said Bethanie Carney Almroth, an expert at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
There was little evidence of plastic entangling ants and other small land insects, though. The La Palma ants
represent one of the first known examples of plastic trash-entangled land animals.
“In the last 15 years, we have acquired enough knowledge about what happens in ocean ecosystems, but it is
time to expand to other systems and species to obtain a greater outlook,” said an urban ecologist lvaro Luna of
the European University of Madrid.
The two ants, which Luna and colleagues collected from a forest and near the top of La Palma’s volcano,
may have picked up the plastic accidentally while looking for food. Because the ants were still alive and mobile
when caught, it was unclear whether the plastic harmed them, Luna said.
The roads nearby and hiking paths could serve as the fibers’ origins, the researchers suspected. Plastic
particles could be carried by the wind to remote areas like those in parts of La Palma where the team found the
ants, said an ocean ecologist Melanie Bergmann.
It’s possible that insects have been entangled in plastic for a long time and it’s just gone unnoticed. “The
more we research, the clearer it becomes that plastic pollution is ubiquitous (普遍存在的),”Bergmann said.
32. What happened to the two ants when they were collected from the island
A. They were fed on the fibers. B. They were unable to move around.
C. They were entangled in plastic fibers. D. They were hidden in the plastic waste.
33. What does the underlined word“treacherous”mean in Paragraph 3
A. Dangerous. B. Significant. C. Common. D. Motivating.
34. What’s the focus of scientists’ research according to lvaro Luna
A. How to handle plastic waste.
B. Where the plastics should go.
C. What happens in the ocean ecosystem.
D. How plastics impact on other systems and species.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To remind us of land pollution.
B. To introduce the poor condition of two ants.
C. To update us on scientific research about pollution.
D. To propose new means to protect the volcanic island.

Kareem sighed as he counted his money again. He was still short of fifty dollars to buy the latest Speedster X
bike. In order to save his pocket money to replace his old bike, he had been packing sandwiches to school for the
last three months.
“How can I get that fifty dollars ” he thought to himself. His mind was wandering when Mother’s voice
disturbed his thoughts. “Kareem, I just ran into Aunty Kim, our neighbour who just moved in next door. Her son,
Shawn, will cycle to school next week. Could you show him the shortcut to school later It’s Saturday anyway!”
Hearing this, Kareem had no option but to obey it. He knew Mother had probably already volunteered his service
7
to Aunty Kim. “Oh, here’s a mail from your Grandma. Open it!” added Mother.
Kareem’s grandmother lived abroad and she would send him photos and cards. He opened the envelope and
pulled out a greeting card. Incredibly, a fifty-dollar note slipped out as well! Kareem was wild with joy. Waving
the note in the air, he shouted happily, “Enough money for my bike!”
At 2 p. m. Kareem met Shawn as arranged by their mothers. The sooner he finished this task, the sooner he
could go to the bike shop. While the boys were cycling, a squirrel (松鼠) appeared behind a parked car and dashed
across the road so suddenly that the boys knocked into each other and fell down heavily. Kareem said regretfully,
“I forgot to warn you about the squirrel population here.” As Kareem was lifting up his broken bike, Shawn cried
anxiously, “Oh, my poor bike! It’s completely broken.”
Watching Shawn carrying the disabled bike home in silence, Kareem hurried to the bike shop for his dream
bike. The sign “Half Price for Old Models” in the shop attracted his eyes. He knew the price of an old model was
exactly half the price of a Speedster X bike.

How to Arrange the Time for Study
Effective time management is vital for academic success and personal well-being. Without a clear plan,
students may struggle with stress, incomplete tasks, or exhaustion.
Here are three practical tips. To begin with, create a realistic schedule by breaking tasks into smaller goals
and setting deadlines, which can boost productivity. What is suggested next is to prioritize tasks based on urgency
and difficulty. Tackle challenging subjects first when your mind is fresh. What’s more, avoiding distractions like
social media during study hours is also an effective way to stay focused.
Let’s take action today! Remember, small daily efforts lead to long-term achievements. By managing time
well, you will not only excel in studies but also enjoy more freedom for hobbies and relaxation. Begin now—your
future self will thank you!
读后续写参考范文:
“A Speedster X bike or two old models ” Kareem hesitated. He thought to himself, “Whatever
happened was not my fault. I’m buying Speedster X anyway.” However, as the image of Shawn and his
disabled bike flashed before him repeatedly, he felt a shiver running down his body. An inner voice
insisted that he should reach out a helping hand. Just at that moment, his initial guilt gave way to a sense
of responsibility. After a quick mental calculation, he decided to buy two old models.
“Hi!” Kareem appeared at Shawn’s door cheerfully and asked, “Want to ride together ” Shawn
got annoyed at the silly question. He moved his lips as if to say something but before he could say
anything, Kareem took a stride to the side, revealing two shiny identical bikes magically. “What... How
come No, it couldn’t be...”, Shawn beamed with excitement, tears clouding his eyes. Mother, who had
witnessed the scene from the window, walked up to Kareem and patted his shoulder gently and playfully,
“Son! I’m really proud of you.”
