Make Your Own Noodles
What You’ll Need
●1/2 cup flour (面粉): all-purpose or bread flour, but bread flour makes chewier (更有嚼劲的) noodles
●4 tablespoons water
●1/4 teaspoon salt
●Mixing bowl, rolling pin, pizza cutter or scissors
Adult helper for cutting and boiling
★Mix Mix flour, water and salt in a bowl. Start with 2 tablespoons of water. Add a little water or flour when necessary. A well-mixed dough (面团) should not stick to your hands too much.
★Knead Spread a little flour on your table and knead the dough. Hit, fold, and pull it until it’s smooth. Smooth doughs lead to chewier noodles.
★Rest Cover the dough and let it sit for about 30 minutes. This lets the dough develop.
★Roll Spread some flour on the table. Cut your dough ball into 4 pieces. Take one piece at a time, and roll it out with a rolling pin, as thin as you can.
★Cut When it’s pretty thin, cut your noodles narrow, thick, or whatever shape you like! Some people fold the dough before cutting, so it’s easier to make straight lines. When ready, unfold the noodles or they’ll stick!
★Cook You can cook your noodles right away or dry them for an hour for a bit chewier noodles. Cook fresh noodles in a pot of boiling water for just a few minutes. Fresh noodles cook much faster than dry ones. How long will depend on how thick your noodles are—thicker noodles take longer.

The Yingge dance, also named “Dance of the Heroes”, has a history dating back to the Ming Dynasty. It is a folk art form that mixes opera, dance and martial arts (武术). It is quite popular in Guangdong Province in south China and Puning is home to over 100 Yingge teams. In 2006, Puning Yingge dance was listed as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
The Yingge dance usually gets inspiration from The Water Margin, one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. During major festivals, the sound of Yingge drums fills cities and villages. The dancers wear colorful traditional costumes, put on beautiful facial makeup (化妆) and dance joyfully. When watching the dance, people can always feel the spirit of fighting for the good besides a lively air with energy and youth.
Typically, in the Yingge dance, the lead dancer acts like a snake as the snake means being flexible (灵活的) and wise, which gives the dance deep cultural importance. Holding a cloth snake, the lead dancer copies the snake’s movements. When he makes his way through the dance team, he also guides the team’s direction. His fine steps and skillful movements make him the focus of the performance.
During performances, dancers hold the Yingge sticks at their mid-points, waving them and forming the shape of number 8. At the same time, their fingers create continuous movements. Moreover, each dancer jumps sideways and hits the sticks to the drum beats as if they are riding a horse. Their heads and bodies move naturally to the beat too.
Traditionally, only adult men could join the Yingge teams. Today, the Yingge dance has greeted both men and women. Also, modern dance is added while the most important part of traditional dance is kept, which suits the taste of people today.

Plastic waste is an increasingly important problem. Up to now, only 9% of the plastics ever produced have been recycled. The rest remain on earth for hundreds of years. They wash out to the ocean to become rubbish, harm wildlife and break down into small plastics that can enter the human brain and other parts of our bodies.
Recently, scientists have developed a new method to break down plastic waste with the help of water in the air. The researchers mixed a special metal and activated carbon (活性碳) with PET, the most common type of polyester (聚酯) plastic. Then they heated the mixture. After a short time, this broke the chemical connections in the polyester. Next, when the team left the material in the air, the mixture turned into TPA, a polyester material, and acetaldehyde, an industrial chemical. Finally, these valuable chemical materials were recycled.
After the first success, researchers tested the method on different plastics and found it worked on polyester plastic only. That meant they didn’t need to separate different kinds of plastics. Also, when they added water, it stopped working because the amount (数量) of water in the air was just right.
The team’s next plan will be to use the method widely in industry.
“It’s hopeful that our technology can hugely reduce plastic pollution, lower the environmental footprint of plastics and help materials be reused instead of being thrown away,” researchers said. “It’s a leap towards a cleaner, greener future, and it shows how creative chemistry can solve world challenges in a way that joins hands with nature.”

Farming and creativity don’t often go hand in hand, but rice paddy art (稻田画) is turning ordinary fields into pictures. However, you may be asking, “How is the art created from only rice plants ” The secret is to use different kinds of rice seeds (种子). As the plants grow, each type shows a different color, from green to purple, to bring an artwork to life.
Creating rice paddy art takes a lot of work and planning. First, farmers draw a picture with a computer program. Then, they mark the design on a map of the field. This helps show which kind of rice should be planted in each section. After that, they’re ready to sow (播种) the seeds, either with the help of drones or volunteers.
Rice paddy art in China started in 2010 in Shenyang, showing dragons and Chinese paintings. Then the practice started to catch on in some other places like Harbin and Hangzhou. On October 24, 2023, a huge 3D rice field painting in Tianjin set a Guinness World Record! Named “Celebrating Harvest, Promoting Harmony”, it covers 50,798 square meters—bigger than any other 3D rice field artwork ever around the world.
Rice paddy art is a fun way to bring beauty and energy to the countryside. A great number of tourists come to the countryside to enjoy the new art form. It is a great example of how tradition and creativity can go together to uplift communities.

26. What harm of plastics is mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. Polluting the sea. B. Warming the air. C. Reducing wetland. D. Causing wildfire.
27. How did the team do the research
①Heat the mixture.
②Leave the mixture in the air.
③Recycle the chemical materials.
④Mix a special metal, activated carbon with PET.
A. ④-②-①-③ B. ④-②-③-① C. ④-①-②-③ D. ④-①-③-②
