They say that “travel is the best teacher” and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming Dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake(1587—1641).His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encouraged the love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country’s land and geography.
Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family,Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18,however.Xu’s father died and so,it seemed, did his travelling dreams. He was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as the tradition required.
But his mother had different ideas.Understanding her son’s love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modern-thinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work.
So at the age of twenty and with his mother’s support,Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well.He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years.During this time,he travelled throughout the Ming Kingdom, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500,000 words, would eventually become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.
Although rich,Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hard-to-reach mountain areas, and through wild forests where few people lived. His willingness to face hardships came at a cost however.Progress was slow and tiring and he was frequently sick, robbed and beaten during his journeys.
Sadly,Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey,a 4-year trip through the Southwest of China. He died in 1641,soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after his death, much of it had been destroyed or lost.Although incomplete,it still made Xu a travelling legend around the world.

Animals can express their needs using a lot of ways. For instance, almost all animals have distinct vocals(声音) that they rely on to either ask for help, scare away any dangerous animals or look for shelter. But cats are special creatures who possess amazing vocalization skills. They are able to have entire conversations with humans using meows and you’re able to interpret it.If a pet cat is hungry,it will keep meowing to attract attention and find food. However, when a cat is looking for affection, they tend to produce stretched and soft meows.Meowing starts as soon as a baby cat is brought to life and uses it to get the mother’s attention and be fed.
Cats have many heightened senses, but their sense of smell is quite impressive. They use their noses to assess their environment and look out for any signs of danger. They will sniff out specific areas before they choose a place to relax. However, another way the cats are able to distinguish between situations is by looking for familiar smells.Your cat will likely smell your face and store the smell in its memory and use it to recognize you in the future. That’s why most pet cats are able to tell immediately if their owners were around any other cats, which they don’t usually like.
Dogs are known for their impressive fetching habit, but cats take this behavior up a notch. Many cats will find random objects outside and bring them to their owners. This is a very old habit that’s been present in all kinds of predators(食肉动物).Cats bring gifts for their owners to show they love you. These adorable little hunters are just doing something that has been in their nature since the beginning of time.So just go along with it!

Sheep farmers can profit by planting trees and selling carbon credits, according to a new study. The report by the University of Sheffield, published in the journal Environmental Research, suggests that farmers with more than 60 acres of land could turn a profit if their land were returned to forest and they received £3 per ton of CO2 captured. The farmers could then sell the carbon “credits” to companies looking to offset(抵消) their emissions(排放物),such as airlines.
The study was released as the UK farming sector prepares to move away from the Basic Payment System to the new Environmental Land Management Scheme(ELMS),which focuses on producing “public goods”,such as recovering ecosystems, flood defenses and carbon storage.Carbon credits are currently being sold for £15 per ton,a price that could make any forest size profitable, according to the study. The research also suggests that if the UK increased its tree cover from 8% to 12%,the amount of carbon emissions captured by forests would increase by 10%.
“Sheep farming in the UK is not profitable without subsidies(补贴),but forests that sell carbon credits can be economically workable—so it makes sense for the Government to help farmers transition(过渡),” believes Colin Osborne, the lead author of the study.“In the end, these come down to political questions of how we want our countryside to be used, how we value livestock production over the global costs of climate breakdown and how the Government supports farmers and rural communities.”
However, critics say that the study is far too simplistic, with the National Sheep Association(NSA) saying land management shouldn’t only focus on carbon emissions, but has to be multi-functional.Speaking to Farmers Guardian,NSA CEO Phil Stocker says it’s “really easy for scientists to justify the planting of forests through a carbon calculation(计算),because it is easy to measure how much carbon is in a tree and then apply an offset value”.
Mr.Stocker notes that grassland can effectively capture carbon and he adds,“I appreciate trees as much as anyone, but to introduce policies to destroy grassland by creating forest is short-sighted at best.”
32.What is the new study about
A.Forests giving way to sheep farming.
B.UK sheep farmers preferring to plant trees.
C.Sheep farmers contributing greatly to environmental protection.
D.UK sheep farmers getting paid for replacing their grassland with forest.
33.What is the aim of the new ELMS
A.To help sheep farmers get richer and richer.
B.To support those suffering from natural disasters.
C.To use the land in an environmentally-friendly way.
D.To encourage people to plant more trees on their land.
34.What do Colin Osborne’s words focus on
A.The role of the Government.
B.The future of sheep farming.
C.The costs of climate breakdown.
D.The problems of rural communities.
35.Which of the following would Phil Stocker agree with
A.It is meaningful to measure carbon emissions.
B.It is unwise to replace grassland with woodland.
C.Subsidizing farmers helps improve soil quality.
D.Grassland plays a more vital role than woodland.

Farmers, especially in developing countries, are often criticized for cutting down forests. But a new study suggests that many farmers recognize the value in keeping trees.
Researchers using satellite images found at least ten percent tree cover on more than one billion hectares(公顷) of farmland. 36
The study found the most tree cover in South America. 37 North Africa and West Asia have the least. And it also found that climate conditions alone could not explain the amount of tree cover in different areas. 38
There are areas with few trees but also few people, and areas with many trees and many people. The findings suggest that things like land rights, markets or government policies can influence tree planting and protection.
Dennis Garrity heads the World Agroforestry Center. 39 The problem,he says,is that policy-makers and planners have been slow to recognize this and to support such efforts.
The satellite images may not show what the farmers are using the trees for,but trees provide nuts, fruit, wood and other products. They provide windbreaks and shade from the sun. 40 Even under drought conditions, trees can often provide food and a way to earn money until the next growing season.
A.Almost all of it is covered by trees.
B.That is almost half the farmland in the world.
C.They also help prevent soil loss and protect water supplies.
D.He says farmers are acting on their own to protect and plant trees.
E.Next comes Africa south of the Sahara, followed by Southeast Asia.

第一节
Dear Tom,
I’m delighted to learn that you are interested in our tree-planting activity.
The activity is held annually with different themes. This year’s theme is “Building a Green Home”.The activity was held on March 12,our National Tree-planting Day.Early in the morning, all the teachers and students gathered on the West Hill, where we spent the whole morning digging, planting and watering.Eventually about 200 trees were planted.Seeing the trees waving in the warm wind,we all felt excited and proud despite tiredness.
Undoubtedly,we benefit a lot from the activity, which not only brings us the pleasure of labor but also helps us to develop team spirit.Hopefully you can join us next year.
Yours,
Li Hua

Several days later, when Jenny’s father came in to read her a story,Jenny was sitting on her bed and her lips were trembling.“Here,Daddy,” she said, and held out her hand. She opened it and her beloved pearl necklace was inside. She put it into her father’s hand. With one hand her father held the plastic pearls and the other he pulled a blue box out of his pocket.Inside of the box were real, genuine, beautiful pearls. He had had them all along. He was waiting for Jenny to give up the cheap stuff so he could give her the real thing.
