Clara Barton, born on December 25,1821,is widely known as one of the most honored women in American history. She lived in Washington,D.C.,when the Civil War began in 1861.She heard stories of wounded soldiers. She immediately recognized that the poorly equipped soldiers needed help.Instead of waiting for others to step in,Clara collected necessary things on her own, asked the public for donations and learned how to store and distribute them to the soldiers in the battlefield.
After the Battle of Cedar Mountain in northern Virginia in 1863,Clara arrived at a field hospital at midnight with a vehicle full of supplies.A doctor named Paul Smith at that hospital would later write,“Her assistance arrived at exactly the right time.”

One day,Vinod Menon, head of the physics department at City College of New York, was going through his office mails. He opened a box, only to find $180,000 with a nameless letter and a return address.Having never seen so much money,he was too shocked to know what to do with it.
City College of New York is one of the most productive public university systems in the United States, and the physics department has played a key role.Three Nobel Prize winners in physics received their education there, and in 1921 Albert Einstein gave one of his first lectures at the Harlem campus.
“Supposing that you are a bit curious as to why I am doing this, the reason is simple,” the letter read.It continued to explain that many years before, its generous writer had taken advantage of the excellent educational opportunity, available at City College to study physics, earn a master’s degree, and do a long,productive,well-rewarding scientific job.The sender wished to offer the money to poor students learning physics and other sciences.
The return address was to a house in Pensacola,Florida whose owners had no idea of the money. The money was first put aside, but after the two-month-long research which had found nothing that could link it to activities which are not lawful, the leaders of the college decided to keep and make good use of the money.
Dr.Menon, who grew up in India, noted that the gift would provide for two fully-funded scholarships every year for ten years, and that he would try to see it go into the hands of the students who had the fewest means—such as immigrants like him.

An Indiana school system is testing a new program that turns food that would normally go to waste into meals for children who need them.
As part of a pilot program,20 students at Woodland Elementary School (小学) in Elkhart went home on Friday with an insulated (隔热的) backpack filled with eight frozen meals to help them get through the weekend. The program is just getting started, but it seems to be going well.Cafeteria staff stood up and clapped when the plan was announced.“It’s heartbreaking, you know, seeing our kids hungry and not being able to do anything about it,” said Bickel, the director of student services for Elkhart Community School.
The school partnered with Cultivate,a “food rescue” group in nearby South Bend,to prepare the meals, which include protein (蛋白质) and a vegetable. The group comes to five Elkhart school production kitchens on Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays to collect food that was prepared but not served. That food had been going into the garbage.Cultivate gets food from local restaurants, hospitals and other businesses as well. The University of Notre Dame athletic department and the South Bend Cubs league baseball team also donate unused food.
Cultivate is also running pilot programs with two South Bend schools.“It’s been a long-term mission for myself,” Cultivate co-founder Randy Z said,“I was the kid who went home with no food and didn’t eat on the weekends when I was younger.”
