As a student,I heard the line “graduate school is stressful” so many times that it began to bear no meaning:
Sure, there were campus resources that encouraged healthy behaviors, including deep thought, and the benefits of self-care,but self-care sounded expensive and time-consuming to me;I had work to do.And I was not a fan of deep thought:The thought of sitting still for 30 minutes only caused me greater stress. But one thing I couldn’t stay away from was walking my dog.
Tessa is a six-year-old lovely coonhound that I got as a gift to myself, for completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston.I first saw Tessa as a thin and little dog in a photo on the Internet. She was found, huddled up with her friends,in a deserted house in Alabama.
Because of Tessa,I took frequent walking breaks while studying for a master’s degree in public health at Yale University in New Haven,Connecticut.I discovered the best corners and crannies on campus, including the sloping grass land behind the school, filled with squirrels and sticks — a safe place for dogs.I found a tree accidentally with a swing, overlooking the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, which offered the best sunset view in town.On our daily walks,I found calm in the woods and quiet in the early morning enveloping the city streets.
Now,as I work from home,Tessa continues to help me deal with a lonely existence.Just like in graduate school, she demands that I stop working, however briefly, and accompany her on a walk. These forced breaks throughout the day take me away from my computer and help me to stay active, greet my neighbors and come back to work refreshed. And although I certainly haven’t escaped from stress, and I am still trying to find my footing in research,I will continue to make time for walks every day.I recommend it very much.

D.The author likes both the city and the university.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The author often feels lonely at home. B.The author works hard but exercises less.
C.Both the author and the neighbors like Tessa. D.Walking with Tessa benefits the author much.

A new study finds that bird species with extreme or uncommon combinations of traits (特征) face the highest risk of extinction. The study led by researchers at Imperial College London finds that the most unique birds on the planet are also the most threatened.Losing these species and the unique roles they play in the environment, such as seed spread, pollination and predation, could have negative impacts on the functioning of ecosystems.
The study analyzed the extinction risk and physical traits, such as beak shape and wing length,of 99% of all living bird species, making it the most general study of its kind to date. The researchers found that in simulated scenarios (模拟场景) in which all threatened and near-threatened bird species became extinct, there would be a significantly greater reduction in the physical diversity among birds than in scenarios where extinctions were random (随机的).
Jarome Ali,a PhD candidate at Princeton University who completed the research at Imperial College London, said,“Our study shows that extinctions will most likely prune a large percentage of unique species from the bird family tree.Losing these unique species will mean a loss of the specialized roles that they play in ecosystems. If we do not take action to protect threatened species and prevent extinctions, the functioning of ecosystems will be thrown into disorder.”
In the study, the authors used a dataset of measurements collected from living birds and museum specimens, totalling 9,943 bird species.Although the dataset used in the study was able to show that the most unique birds were also classified as threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species,it was unable to show what links uniqueness in birds to extinction risk.
Jarome Ali said,“One possibility is that highly specialized organisms are less able to adapt to a changing environment,in which case human impacts may directly threaten species with the most unusual ecological roles.More research is needed to dive deeper into the connection between unique traits and extinction risk.”
28.According to researchers, what may the loss of unique birds lead to
A.The reduction of certain research. B.The damage to ecosystem function.
C.The development of ecological tourism. D.The better living environment of human race.
29.What may the underlined word “prune” mean in paragraph 3
A.Cut out. B.Pick up. C.Get in. D.Add to.
30.What do researchers need to explore in the future
A.Human’s impacts on unique birds. B.The parts unique traits play in birds’ life.
C.Links of uniqueness in birds to extinction risk. D.The approaches to preventing birds’ extinction.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Some birds with special physical traits B.Key roles unique birds play in ecosystems
C.Measures to protect threatened unique birds D.More unique birds at higher risk of extinction
D
In a world on fire and underwater, scientists have announced some good news:Several important tuna species have stepped back from the edge of extinction.
Two bluefin tuna species,a yellowfin, and an albacore are no longer seriously endangered or have moved off the leading international list of endangered species entirely.
The unexpectedly fast recovery speaks to the success of efforts over the past decade to end overfishing. But tuna are not the only species scientists are thinking carefully at the 2021 World Conservation Congress in Marseille,France, which is organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).Researchers warn that many other sea species continued to be imperiled. For example, more than a third of the world’s sharks are still threatened with extinction due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change.
“I think the good news is that sustainable fishing industry is possible,” says Beth Polidoro,a biologist at Arizona State University.“We can eat fish without reducing the population to the point where it is on the road to dying out or extinction.” At the same time, she warns that the recovery should not encourage us to catch as many fish as we want.“We need to keep doing what’s working,” Polidoro adds.
The IUCN,which determines the world’s most endangered species on its Red List of Threatened Species, also announced at the meeting that some animals are moving in the other direction, onto the Red List.Like the Komodo dragon,a lizard,it is at particular risk from climate change.
Of course, the work of protection is never over, and it will require close and continuous attention to make sure neither tuna nor Komodo dragons return to the edge of dying out.But for now, people can celebrate a few wins for the animal world.
32.What is the good news about tuna
A.They have been removed from the list of endangered species.
B.The fishing of tuna has been put to an end completely.
C.The population of some tuna species has recovered.
D.The number of some tuna species increases slowly.
33.What does the underlined word “imperiled” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Dangerous. B.Sustainable. C.Disappointing. D.Endangered.
34.What can we learn from Beth Polidoro’s words
A.We can fish tuna as much as we want. B.Protecting tuna has a long way to go.
C.We shouldn’t encourage tuna fishing. D.The population of tuna will reduce.
35.Why does the writer mention “the Komodo dragon” in paragraph 5
A.To introduce a topic. B.To make a comparison.
C.To explain an idea. D.To give an example.

Although cigarette ends are small, they are bad for the environment.Worldwide, about 4.3 trillion cigarette ends are littered every year.As well as ruining the beauty of the environment, they contain poisonous chemicals. 37 In this way, they affect water quality and endanger plants and animals in the water.Cigarette ends can take up to 25 years to break down, and the poisonous chemicals add up to a large amount with so many littered. So,if people want to smoke, they should clear up the ends properly in a rubbish can.
38 They are easily blown by wind and float in water,so they can travel long distances. They find their way to rivers, parks, beaches, and oceans, killing many birds, mammals, and sea animals each year worldwide. They can last for hundreds of years in the environment. We should not let plastic bags become litter. We should use fewer plastic bags, and reuse and recycle what we have already used. One way to reduce the use of plastic bags is to charge for them.Shops used to give plastic bags for free. 39 Some shops also have a “bag-for-life” plan. They sell stronger bags that can be reused, and they replace them for free if the bags ever break.
Waste is a big problem for the environment,so we need to do something. Not littering at all or cleaning up “small waste” saves money spent on clearing off litter properly. 40
A.They are harmful to our health.
B.These find their way into the water supply.
C.In today’s world,the answer is certainly “Yes,it can!”
D.Proper measures should be taken to deal with the pollution issues.
E.However,it would be better not to smoke or use plastic bags at all.
F.Plastic bags are another common form of litter dangerous to the environment.
G.But in some countries, including China, customers are now charged for each bag.

Ever since a 2009 cycling accident put him in a wheelchair,Dan Black of Chepstow,Wales, has had one dream—walking.
He has adapted to his limitations, but he longs for the freedom and activity he once had.His mother says he “goes to bed dreaming he can walk and run”.That is why he was excited to learn about cutting-edge stem cell research being done in China, and a treatment that could possibly lead to the recovery of his legs.
But there are two big problems between Dan and his dream.First, the research is so cutting-edge that it may be years before the treatment is an actual, real possibility for him.And second is the most practical of all considerations:money. The procedure would doubtless cost tens of thousands of dollars—maybe more.
And these are not all for Dan.He lost the use of his legs and his right arm in the accident. He requires around-the-clock care,so it’s hard for him to find a job.His lifestyle is,according to his mother,“ing up with the money he will need for those treatments—when and if they are available—was a source of great concern to the young Welshman.
Encouraged by love and concern for Dan,friends worked hard through a series of fundraising activities over a period of five years to get more than 20,000 pounds for the procedure.Dan was moved by this extraordinary kindness and felt he could really start looking towards the day when he could turn his dream of walking again into a reality.
Then he heard about Brecon,a 5-year-old who also lives in Chepstow and suffers from spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, which severely limits his ability to walk.Dan learnt that a new surgical procedure being done in the United States could allow the little boy to walk unaided. But the surgery would require more than 60,000 pounds—money Brecon’s parents were having a hard time raising.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
“It appears that Brecon can walk if he gets his operation, but I can’t right now,” Dan said to himself.

Brecon’s parents were greatly moved by Dan’s behaviour.

故选A项。

36.C 上文“After all,if it is so small,it cannot possibly be that harmful,can it ”提出问题,C项给出答案,符合上下文。故选C项。
37.B 根据下文“In this way, they affect water quality and endanger plants and animals in the water.”

40.E 根据上文“Waste is a big problem for the environment,so we need to do something. Not littering at all or cleaning up ‘small waste’ saves money spent on clearing off litter properly.”
42.A 根据上文的“should have...the course earlier than”可知,Bailey耽搁(delay)了比赛,同时根据下文可知,Bailey背着一个参赛选手(competitor)冲过终点线。
45.C 根据下文的“took her arm”以及“carried her”可知,Bailey停了下来(stopped)去帮助那位参赛选手。
go away“走开”;stand up“站起来”;step aside“让开”;bend down“弯腰”。

interrupt“打扰”;assess“评估”;identify“确认”;appreciate“感激”。

Good morning,everyone!
My name is Li Hua.I’m here to appeal for your small acts in your daily life to protect antelopes.
The recent decades have witnessed a dramatic decline in antelopes’ population on account of humans’ illegal hunting for their precious fur as well as their habitat loss.
As responsible students on this shared planet,we’re expected to obtain more knowledge to raise public awareness of animal protection and buy sustainable products to restore their habitats.Only in this way can we exist in harmony with nature.Let’s make a difference from now on!
Thank you!
第二节
“It appears that Brecon can walk if he gets his operation, but I can’t right now,” Dan said to himself. So he felt that the money seemed more valuable to the boy.“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone...who has helped me out,” he said.“But this boy needs it more than I do at the moment.” So he took the cash—also his dream—out of the bank and handed it over to Brecon’s parents, telling them “it would make me very happy to see the difference made to Brecon’s life.”
Brecon’s parents were greatly moved by Dan’s behaviour.“It is really an amazing gift,” Brecon’s mother said.Brecon’s father could only shake his head in wonder.“How do you even start saying ‘thank you’ for something like that ” he asked. But for Dan’s part,no thanks are required. He just wanted to help someone whose life could get better, and if he can help someone to walk, that is just like his dream coming true.
