Born in 1958 in Nanning,Guangxi,Dr.Huang Danian became interested in geophysics early. His parents, teaching at a local geological institution, passed the passion down to him.In 1978,Huang was admitted to Changchun Institute of Geology and later taught there. He once wrote that rejuvenating (使恢复活力) the Chinese nation was their generation’s responsibility.
In 1992,he went to Britain for further studies. There,he obtained his doctorate in geophysics and joined a local firm.During his time in the UK,Huang’s heart remained devoted to the motherland, frequently flying back to China to attend academic meetings or seminars related to his field. In 2008,he returned to China with great resolution. For him,no matter how successful he was abroad, the biggest satisfaction would be improving his home country.
Upon his return to China,he was entrusted to work at Jilin University as a professor and chief scientist in a branch of China’s biggest deep earth exploration program.Over 400 scientists participated in the program, which aimed to fix high-tech cameras on aircraft, ships, and satellites that would enable scientists to see through the earth’s crust (地壳) without digging into it.
For seven years,Huang worked racing against time. Many of his co-workers called him a workaholic while he thought he was more like a “lunatic (疯狂的人)”.“China is in urgent need of ‘lunatics’ if it is to become a stronger country. It would be an honor if I could be one of them,” he added. The lunatic’s madness paid off.He and his team helped China greatly narrow its gap with developed countries in obtaining precise data on deep earth exploration. They created a number of China’s No.1s,filling many technical gaps for China’s sky survey, ground detection, and sea exploration.
During his whole life,he sought no fame, and always kept the motherland in mind.As a scientist,he fulfilled his dream of rejuvenating the nation with exceptional achievements.
24.Why did Dr.Huang decide to return and work in China
A.To work at Jilin University. B.To attend academic meetings.
C.To devote himself to researching. D.To serve his motherland whole-heartedly.
25.What did the deep-earth exploration program focus on
A.Discovering new mineral resources.
B.Competing with developed countries.
C.Equipping various platforms with cameras.
D.Helping scientists explore beneath the earth’s crust.
26.What did Huang and his team achieve
A.They won many international awards.
B.They got accurate data on the deep ocean.
C.They attained many firsts in relevant fields.
D.They helped China overtake developed countries.
27.Which of the following can best describe Dr.Huang
A.Committed and patriotic. B.Enterprising and crazy.

Recorded lectures have become a part of course instruction recently, and college students often try to watch these recordings at double their normal speed or even faster. But does comprehension(理解) suffer as a result
Surprisingly,no—up to a point.A new UCLA study has found learning and knowledge memory is not negatively affected when students watch recorded lectures at faster playback speeds. However, comprehension was found to suffer when playback reached 2.5 times normal speed.
The study divided 231 students into four different playback speed groups(normal speed,1.5X,2X and 2.5X).Each group watched a pair of short lecture videos and then immediately completed a 40-question comprehension test.
Little difference was found between the normal playback speed group and the 1.5 times or double speed groups. They all performed similarly on the tests, but the group watching videos at 2.5 times normal speed didn’t do as well.A second test a week later saw similar results, suggesting neither short-term or long-term comprehension was negatively affected by watching videos at faster playback speeds.
“Surprisingly, the video speed had little effect on both immediate and delayed comprehension until learners go beyond twice the normal speed,” explains lead author Dillon Murphy.
Murphy says students should be careful about how they use faster playback in terms of finding optimal study strategies. If students choose to speed up lecture playback,Murphy says, they should use the time saved for additional learning.
“While our study didn’t show obvious negative results to watching lecture videos at up to double the normal speed,we are against using this strategy to simply save time,” Murphy says.“Students can deepen learning if they spend the time saved on things like reviewing flashcards or taking practice tests.”
28.Why does the author mention the question in paragraph 1
A.To express his doubts. B.To introduce the topic for discussion.
C.To describe recorded lectures. D.To compare different ideas.
29.How did the researchers make the findings
A.By using earlier studies. B.By building models.
C.By comparing experiment data. D.By interviewing teachers.
30.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “optimal” in paragraph 6
A.Best. B.Simplified. C.Complex. D.Acceptable.
31.What is the purpose of the study
A.To check the speed of understanding.

The Nobel economics prize was awarded on Monday to Harvard University professor Claudia Goldin for research that has advanced the understanding of the gender (性别) gap in the labor market.
The announcement went a tiny step to closing the Nobel committee’s own gender gap:Goldin is just the third woman to win the prize out of 93 economics laureates (获奖者).She has studied 200 years of women’s participation in the workplace, showing that despite continued economic growth, women’s pay did not continuously catch up to men’s and a divide still exists despite women gaining higher levels of education than men.“I’ve always been an optimist. But when I looked at the numbers,I found in the 1990s,our labor force participation rate for women was the highest in the world, and now it isn’t the highest in the world,” Goldin told The Associated Press.
“Although Goldin’s research does not offer solutions,it allows policymakers to deal with the problem,” said Randi Hjalmarsson,a member of the Nobel committee.“She explains the source of the gap,and how it’s changed over time and how it changes with the stage of development.By finally understanding the problem and calling it by the right name,we will find a solution.”
Goldin,77,told AP that what happens in people’s homes reflects what happens in the workplace.Women often have to take jobs that allow them to be on call at home—work that often pays less.
“Goldin tried to fill in missing data for her research,” Hjalmarsson said. For parts of history, systematic labor market records did not exist, and,if they did, information about women was missing.“So Goldin had to be a detective to find novel data sources and creative ways to use them to measure these unknowns.”
32.What can we infer from the second paragraph
A.Men gained higher levels of education than women.
B.Women’s pay caught up to men’s 200 hundred years ago.
C.Many women scientists have won the Nobel economics prize these years.
D.In the late 20th century,American women labor force participation rate was the top.
33.Which of the following is right
A.Randi Hjalmarsson didn’t agree with Goldin.
B.Most women usually prefer to be housewives.
C.What happens in family life often mirrors that in the workplace.
D.Goldin’s research offered the policymakers solutions to the problem.
34.Which is a challenge that Claudia Goldin faced in her research
A.Lack of experience. B.Lack of support. C.Lack of money. D.Lack of data.
35.What’s the best title of the passage
A.A Solution to the Gender Gap in the Labor Market
B.Claudia Goldin—a Great Economics Data Detective
C.The Third Woman Who Wins the Nobel Prize in the World
D.Nobel Economics Prize Goes to Harvard University Woman Professor

How to Succeed in Science
To succeed in science, you need a lot more than luck.In my view, you have to combine intelligence with a willingness not to follow conventions when they block your forward path. Thus, these have come to be my rules for success.
36
That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are brighter than you. It’s like playing any game.Even as a child,I never wanted to play games with anyone who was as bad as I was.If you win,it will give you no pleasure. And in the game of science or life, the highest goal isn’t simply to win; it’s to win at something really difficult. 37
Take risks.
To make a huge success,a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. If you are going to make a huge jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by definition. 38 This can be more than personally upsetting.
Never do anything that bores you.
My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things, and then leaves you alone.I’m not good enough to do well in something I dislike. 39
It’s very hard to succeed if you don’t want to be with other scientists, because you have to go to key meetings where you spot key facts that would have escaped you.And you have to chat with your competitors, even if you find them objectionable.
So my final rule is: 40
A.Meet challenges with great courage.
B.If you can’t stand being with your real peers, get out of science.
C.Put another way,it’s to go somewhere beyond your ability and come out on top.
D.Be sure you always have someone to save you from a deep mess.
E.Avoid foolish people.
F.In fact,I find it hard to do well in something I like.
G.Besides, you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes.

When Ariel rode her bike to Jamaie Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens,New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching.After a one-mile walk, she found a beautiful female swan(天鹅) near the water’s edge.Ariel,30,who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund health recovery center, knew that some swans can be aggressive(富于攻击性的).But as she approached this one,it didn’t move.Ariel found that the swan which buried its neck in its wings seemed to have lost its all energy.
She was certain that the bird needed medical attention.Ariel took off her jacket and covered the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up,and carried it in her arms gently. And then a thought struck her:What should I do now
Her best choice was the recovery center, but that was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way Luckily, some warm-hearted strangers driving by offered her,her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station.
On the subway,no one seemed particularly to focus on the feathered passenger.“One man was sitting right in front of me on his phone.I don’t know if he noticed there was a swan in front of him,” said Ariel.Ariel called the center, and Tristan Higginbotham,an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove the bird, the bike, and the rescuer to the center.

Science Fair
Aiming to raise the students’ awareness of science and technology and develop our team spirit, our school held a science festival named “Science Fair” on May 18.
During the festival,we took part in experiments in groups.Class 1 showed their amazing experiment,in which they used a chopstick to lift a glass filled with rice.Another experiment was conducted by Class 2,in which we watched an egg enter the bottle without being broken.Students from Class 3 even could raise fish in boiling water!
The Science Fair has proved to be a great success due to all of the students’ hard work. From the activity,I realized the importance of teamwork and was amazed by the charm of science and technology.I found my new interest in science.
第二节
There, the staff members along with Ariel gave the swan careful examination. And they decided that the swan might have lead poisoning, caused by eating weights used on fishing lines. With careful attention, the swan was back up on her feet, ending up even making a handsome boyfriend at the center—another injured swan, and living a happy life with him.The staff thought it a happy ending and built a web page on the Internet to praise Ariel and call on more people to follow Ariel’s example.
Soon Ariel’s story got spread online.Moved and inspired by her selfless contribution and generous kindness,Internet users posted to sing highly of her one after another. When interviewed, she said,“Animals are the friends of mankind and an important part of the natural ecosystem.Protecting animals to maintain natural ecological balance has important significance. Thus,we human,as their friends, should pay our efforts to save and protect them.Naturally,I just did what I thought right.”
