Charlotte Bront ’s father was a rural clergyman. She lost her mother when she was five. Bront ’s two older sisters died of an illness. Bront had an active imaginative life, writing stories of a fantastic world called Angria. Her first novel — Jane Eyre — was immediately and widely popular, and brought her into London literary circles. After losing all of her siblings (兄弟姐妹) to illness, Bront married a clergyman she respected, but did not love. She died at 38 of complications (并发症) of her pregnancy.
The Victorian period brought sweeping changes across British society, and writers like Bront explored its crises and progress. Abroad, the British expanded into a global empire that brought wealth from colonies. With the Industrial Revolution at home, manufacturing became Britain’s economic backbone. As the middle class found profitable opportunities, a new laboring class struggled for wages, job security, and adequate working and living conditions. Jane Eyre includes themes of reforms that emerged from the crisis: better political representation, working conditions, and education. Few of these reforms came immediately for women, who had limited status in Vietorian society. As Jane strives for economic and personal independence, she touches on the issues of class, economics, and gender roles that affected Victorian Britain at large.
The most popular literary form in the Victorian period was the novel, and Jane Eyre illustrates many of its defining characteristics: social relevance, plain style, and the narrative of an individual’s inner thoughts. Jane Eyre bears earlier Gothic features, with its mysteries, supernatural events, and picturesque scenery. Jane Eyre is a coming-of-age story, in which the protagonist’s (主角的) ambitions are set against the pressures and expectations of society. Victorian novels with similar styles and goals include Charles Dickens’ semi-autobiographical story, David Copperfeld (1849-1850), and Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mary Barton (1848) and North and South (1855).
The Bront s became a literary powerhouse when Charlotte, Emily, and Anne all wrote successful first novels. Each sister published under a masculine-sounding pseudonym (假名) based on their initials. Charlotte Bront became “Currer Bell”; Emily Bront wrote Wuthering Height (1845-1846) as “Ellis Bell”, and Anne Bront published Agnes Gray (1847) as “Acton Bell”.
24.What can we learn about Charlotte Bront based on Paragraph 1
A.She created a fantasy world named Angria after writing Jane Eyre.
B.She entered London literary circles due to the success of her book.
C.She was survived by her siblings who carried on with her career.
D.She passed away peacefully in her old age surrounded by family.
25.Why was Charlotte Bront ’s novel Jane Eyre widely popular
A.It was her first attempt at writing.
B.It was supported by famous literary figures.
C.It was written based on her own life.
D.It was about important social issues of her time.
26.Which literary characteristic of Jane Eyre fits with the Victorian novel tradition
A.A focus on the protagonist’s inner thoughts and social relevance.
B.A narrative style that avoids addressing class and gender issues.
C.A rejection of Gothic elements and mysterious stories.
D.An emphasis on fantastic worlds unrelated to reality.
27.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 most nearly mean
A.A group of people with minimal influence.
B.A powerful and influential force in literature.
C.A single writer who gained fame and strength.
D.A group of writers only focusing on social issues.
In the age of AI, worries about its impact on the environment are snowballing. For example, asking ChatGPT a question uses ten times more energy than an old-fashioned search. The development of AI has also caused a big increase in greenhouse-gas emissions. Google’s emissions went up nearly 50% from 2019 to 2023. However, these concerns might be overstated. In fact, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that the electricity used by data centres could become three times as much within five years. But at present, the 1.5% of global electricity consumption related to data centres mainly comes from things like streaming, social media and online shopping. Moreover, some of AI’s electricity use will help with greening the economy. AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical grids (电网), cut fuel use in shipping and spot invisible leaks of greenhouse gas.
Policymakers and industry leaders face the task of maximizing AI’s advantages while minimizing its climate effects. The best way would be for governments to set a proper price for carbon and let the market operate. But because a global carbon price remains a distant dream, focusing on other three measures are more down-to-earth.
The first is more openness. Starting in August 2026, the EU will require some AI developers to report how much energy they use in detail. That approach should be copied elsewhere. A second is to rethink how data centers operate. The IEA notes that being able to shift workloads between different data centers at different times could reduce stress and help balance energy grids. Third, technology companies must keep their promises about protecting the environment instead of depending on buying renewable-energy credits.
Doubling down on such approaches would help transform AI from climate suspect to climate hero.
28.What is the main concern about AI
A.Its inability to reduce emissions. B.Its impact on social development.
C.Its shock on old-fashioned search. D.Its high-level energy consumption.
29.What can be inferred from the second paragraph
A.AI’s environmental-friendly potential remains tested.
B.AI has a minor role in the current electricity consumption.
C.AI is currently the most effective way to reduce emissions.
D.The process of AI detecting gas leaking is easy to achieve.
30.Which solution is more realistic to minimize AI’s climate effects
A.Fixing a proper price for carbon. B.Allowing the market to operate.
C.Reconsidering data center operations. D.Purchasing renewable-energy credits.
31.Which of the following is the best title for text
A.AI and Climate: A Battle of Balancing. B.Climate: A Victi m or a Beneficiary of AI
C.AI’s next target: Environmental Protection. D.AI: A Threat or a Contributor to the Climate
When Philip Sontag first visited Antarctica as a Ph. D.student, he collected a bag of penguin (企鹅) feathers. A decade later, Sontag and his team have discovered how to use these feathers to map mercury (汞) pollution in the Southern Hemisphere, a growing threat to wildlife.
Mercury, a poisonous by-product of gold mining, becomes more and more in the food chain and affects animals’ nervous systems. While sampling rocks or soil for mercury provides limited insight, tracking its presence in the food web is crucial for ecosystem monitoring.
Penguins have a way to dispose of mercury through their feathers, which they molt (换羽) regularly. Sontag, now a polar researcher at Rutgers University, and his team analyzed these molted feathers to determine where penguins were exposed to mercury. They found a clear relationship between mercury levels and carbon-13, which varies geographically and acts as a marker for where penguins feed or breed (繁殖). The study confirmed this pattern across seven penguin species in the Southern Ocean, revealing higher mercury exposure in northern, warmer regions with higher carbon-13 levels.
The findings suggest that penguins could serve as bioindicators, living trackers of environmental pollutants. By measuring mercury in feathers, scientists can track the metal’s movement through the oceanic food web over time, rather than just at a single moment. For example, penguin species living near each other showed different mercury and carbon-13 levels due to varying migration and feeding patterns. These data could be modeled into a map-like database to aid conservation and polar research.
Marine scientist Miriam Gimeno Castells notes that penguins are mid-level predators (捕食性动物), and undergo dramatic molts, making it easy to collect feathers from many individuals. The molted feathers contain mercury that gets into their body during the nonbreeding season.
Sontag plans to collect newer feathers from different species and compare mercury levels in penguins’ blood and their food with those in their feathers. As for the penguins’ health, senior author John Reinfelder makes it clear that they have not yet been exposed to poisonous mercury levels. “The penguins will be okay,” he says.
32.How did Sontag use the penguin feathers he collected
A.He kept them as a reminder of his trip.
B.He studied the content of a chemical in them.
C.He observed their changes in different environments.
D.He classified them to identify different species of penguins.
33.What does the underlined part “dispose of” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Recognize. B.Consume. C.Remove. D.Combine.
34.What do we know about penguins from the text
A.They are ideal bioindicators.
B.They are sensitive to carbon-13.
C.They are top-level predators in the food chain.
D.They are free from the effects of human activities.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.The Life Cycle of Penguins in Antarctica.
B.Gold Mining and Its Effects on Penguins.
C.The Impact of Climate Change on Penguin Populations.
D.Penguins Help Map Antarctica’s Growing Mercury Threat.
Rising parental expectations and criticism are linked to an increase in perfectionism among college students. 36 They may include depression, anxiety and self-harm.
37 Prior research has shown that perfectionists become more neurotic (神经质的) and less careful as they get older. Perfectionism also can pass through generations, with perfectionist parents raising perfectionist children.
Three types of perfectionism were increasing among young people. Self-oriented perfectionism involves perfectionist standards about the self. 38 That is to say, someone expects others to be perfection. Socially prescribed perfectionism is the perception that other people and society require perfection. The three types of perfectionism interact and even worsen the effects of each other in negative ways.
Parental expectations had a larger impact than parental criticism on self-oriented and other-oriented perfectionism. 39 Parental expectations have a high cost when they’re perceived as excessive. Young people take in those expectations and depend on them for their self-esteem. And when they fail to meet them, they’ll be critical of themselves for not matching up. To compensate, they strive to be perfect.
Parents can help their children navigate societal pressures in a healthy way by teaching them that failure, or imperfection, is a normal and natural part of life. Another method is to focus on learning and development, not test scores or social media to help children develop healthy self-esteem. 40
A.Perfectionism often becomes a lifelong character.
B.So parental expectations maybe more damaging.
C.It can have damaging mental health consequences.
D.Self-respect is important to teenagers’ development.
E.Other-oriented type is perfectionism turned outward.
F.These ways can be effective to cope with perfectionism.
G.The older they are, the more likely they will be perfectionists.

At fourteen, I was the new girl at a rural school in an apple-orchard valley. There were twenty-eight kids in my class, which was equally divided between boys and girls. It was the tightly knit group of twelve girls that kept me an outsider. They teased me about my bright red hair, my height, my clothes, my shoe size, my accent and anything else they could think of.
I cried myself to sleep after my parents’ pep talk. They said all the right things like “Ruby, Give it time” and “Once they get to know you, they’ll love you.” I wanted to believe them, but the evidence proved otherwise.
Then, a few months into the school year, my parents’ predictions came true. I was playing out in left field for the girls’ baseball team when a ball rocketed right at me. I put my mitt(棒球手套)up as a shield, and the ball packed itself right into my glove. That play saved the game, and we beat the boys’ team for the first time.
Well, after that, the girls couldn’t just exclude me from the victory party. It turned out they liked my sense of humor, and a few actually said they wished they had my mass of bright red hair. Suddenly, I was “in.” Friendships grew, and soon I was included in the overnights and birthday parties.
Spring break came and went, and we returned to a school of freshly waxed floors, redone notice boards and one new girl. Rosa was tiny and quiet. She scanned the crowded hallway, her gaze flitting from one unfamiliar face to another. Her fingers nervously twisted the belt of her backpack, and every now and then, she would take a small step back, as if trying to make herself smaller.
Instantly, memories of my own first days at this school flooded back. I vividly remembered the feeling of being an outsider, the uncertainty and the longing to fit in.

As Jane strives for economic and personal independence, she touches on the issues of class, economics, and gender roles that affected Victorian Britain at large.(《简 爱》包含了从危机中产生的改革主题:更好的政治代表权、工作条件和教育。
根据文章第三段“The most popular literary form in the Victorian period was the novel, and Jane Eyre illustrates many of its defining characteristics: social relevance, plain style, and the narrative of an individual’s inner thoughts.(在维多利亚时代,最受欢迎的文学形式是小说,《简 爱》体现了小说的许多典型特征:社会相关性、质朴的风格以及对个人内心想法的叙述)”可知,维多利亚时期最流行的文学形式是小说,《简 爱》体现了其许多典型特征:社会相关性、朴素的风格以及对个人内心想法的叙述。故选A。
根据划线单词所在语境“The Bront s became a literary powerhouse when Charlotte, Emily, and Anne all wrote successful first novels. Each sister published under a masculine-sounding pseudonym (假名) based on their initials. Charlotte Bront became “Currer Bell”; Emily Bront wrote Wuthering Height (1845-1846) as “Ellis Bell”, and Anne Bront published Agnes Gray (1847) as “Acton Bell”.(当夏洛蒂、艾米莉和安妮三姐妹都写出了成功的第一部小说时,勃朗特一家成为了文学界的一股强大力量。

根据第一段“For example, asking ChatGPT a question uses ten times more energy than an old-fashioned search. The development of AI has also caused a big increase in greenhouse-gas emissions.(例如,向ChatGPT询问一个问题比传统的搜索多消耗十倍的能量。人工智能的发展也导致了温室气体排放的大幅增加。)”可知,人们主要担心AI的高能耗问题,故选D项。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段“The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that the electricity used by data centres could become three times as much within five years. But at present, the 1.5% of global electricity consumption related to data centres mainly comes from things like streaming and social media.(国际能源署(IEA)预测,数据中心的用电量将在五年内增加三倍。但目前,与数据中心相关的1.5%的全球电力消耗主要来自流媒体和社交媒体。)”可知国际能源署预测未来五年数据中心用电可能变为三倍,但目前数据中心占全球电力消耗的1.5%主要来自流媒体和社交媒体等,言外之意是目前AI在数据中心电力消耗方面作用较小,故选B项。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段“The best way would be for governments to set a proper price for carbon and let the market operate. But because a global carbon price remains a distant dream, focusing on other three measures are more down-to-earth.(最好的办法是政府为碳设定一个合适的价格,让市场运作。但是,由于全球碳价格仍然是一个遥远的梦想,因此关注其他三个措施更为实际。)”以及第四段“A second is to rethink how data centers operate.(第二是重新思考数据中心的运作方式。)”
文章第一段“In the age of AI, worries about its impact on the environment are snowballing.(在人工智能时代,对其对环境影响的担忧正在滚雪球。)”指出人们担忧人工智能对环境的影响,如高能耗和增加温室气体排放等,第二段“AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical grids(电网), cut fuel use in shipping and spot invisible leaks of greenhouse gas.(人工智能已经帮助提高了电网的效率,减少了航运中的燃料使用,并发现了看不见的温室气体泄漏。)” AI: A Threat or a Contributor to the Climate

根据第四段“By measuring mercury in feathers, scientists can track the metal’s movement through the oceanic food web over time, rather than just at a single moment.(通过测量羽毛中的汞含量,科学家们可以追踪金属在海洋食物网中的长期运动,而不仅仅是在一个单一的时刻)”和第五段末“The molted feathers contain mercury that gets into their body during the nonbreeding season.(脱落的羽毛中含有汞,在非繁殖季节会进入它们的身体)”及划线处后面“…which they molt (换羽) regularly.(它们会定期换羽)”可知,企鹅羽毛中含汞,而企鹅换羽的习性,可以消除身体内的汞。
根据第四段“The findings suggest that penguins could serve as bioindicators, living trackers of environmental pollutants.(研究结果表明,企鹅可以作为生物指示器,是环境污染物的生活追踪者。)” 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“When Philip Sontag first visited Antarctica as a Ph. D. student, he collected a bag of penguin (企鹅) feathers. A decade later, Sontag and his team have discovered how to use these feathers to map mercury (汞) pollution in the Southern Hemisphere, a growing threat to wildlife.(当菲利普·桑塔格(Philip Sontag)还是博士生时,他第一次访问南极洲,收集了一袋企鹅羽毛。

66.Dear Editor,
I hope this email finds you well. I would like to suggest inviting our British exchange students to contribute articles to the school English newspaper.
This initiative would provide them with an opportunity to share their experiences, cultural insights, and impressions of our school. It would also help our students better understand British culture and improve their English skills. Moreover, such articles would promote cross-cultural communication and strengthen the bond between our students and the exchange students.
I believe this would be a meaningful addition to our school newspaper. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Without hesitation, I walked up to her, wearing a warm smile. “Hello, I’m Ruby. Welcome toour school! It might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but I’m here to help,” I said softly, trying to put her at ease. Rosa looked up at me, a hint of surprise in her eyes, and then offered a shy smile. Immediately led her on a tour around the school. We visited the library, science labs and art room. While showing her the sports field, I casually mentioned our upcoming baseball practice, and noticed her evident interest, so I decided to invite her to join us.
The next day, just as l expected, Rosa showed up at the baseball practice. She sat on thesidelines, watching intently. I handed her a baseball glove. “Want to give it a try ” I asked. She hesitated for a moment, then nodded. I patiently taught her the basics, from how to hold the bat to the proper way of catching a ball. With each successful catch, her confidence grew. By the end of the afternoon, she was laughing and chatting with the rest of the team, no longer the timid new girl. Rosa had now found her place in our group. Now, she was “in 3”, too.
