Understanding culture through music
Last night, I watched a performance of Butterfly Lovers, a beautiful violin concerto composed by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang.It's a piece that really deserves to be heard.
The music took me through the twists and turns of a classic story about a young couple torn apart by their families. When the two lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, first meet, the music is light and pleasant, as if whispering to the audience.It is followed by a fast and cheerful section which represents their three happy years of school.Then the music gets dramatic with heavier notes and that is when the lovers are separated because
Zhu's father forces her to marry another man. Angry and sad, Liang falls sick and dies.Zhu weeps bitterly over the loss of her love.Overcome with sorrow, she jumps into his grave.Finally, during the most exciting part, the music takes a softer turn and ends on a bittersweet note, telling us how the couple transform into butterflies and fly away to be together forever.It is an amazing journey!
Butterfly Lovers combines Chinese and Western musical elements:it is played on Western instruments such as the violin, but more significantly, much of the music has its roots in Chinese Yue Opera.This unique combination has made me realize that music is indeed a universal language.You should definitely listen to Butterfly Lovers—I bet you'll like it!

I'd never heard of the yangqin—a 17th century Chinese stringed instrument—until this past Sunday, when I had the pleasure of hearing Eastman graduate and music artist Wenzhuo Zhang perform on it in a concert.
Wenzhuo, a Chinese native, began her training on the yangqin at age five.When she was only 13, Wenzhuo was awarded a scholarship to the Arts School of Hebei Province.After graduation, she got first in the nationwide competition and was admitted into the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing, where she was awarded her bachelor's in yangqin performance in 2005.She received her doctor's degree from Boston University in music education in 2015 and studied at Eastman from 2017 to 2019.Wenzhuo has performed many times and won countless awards for her performances.
Before Wenzhuo performed five pieces on her yangqin, she introduced a brief historical background, and discussed its continued usage up to the present day.The yangqin was first used in Chinese folk music performance and operas.As time went on, the yangqin slowly became a little popular.Performances began to be supported by the state, and yangqin performers were given a path to higher levels.
Wenzhuo performed four pieces going back to centuries ago, and one piece from the modern time.Needless to say, Wenzhuo's performances sounded splendid.The yangqin is a unique and beautiful traditional instrument, and its sound is wonderful.It was nice to learn about the yangqin and a joy to watch Wenzhuo perform on it.

If you ever visit an English village, make sure to look out for morris dancing.Undoubtedly one of the strangest traditions of English culture, morris dancing is a form of folk dancing that dates back to the 15th century.If you ever get the opportunity, you really have to see it.
Men and women wearing old-fashioned, shabby(破烂的) clothing dance in the streets of towns and villages across the country during the holiday periods.Women wear long skirts and men wear short trousers with bells attached to them.They dance to traditional folk music which is often played on traditional musical instruments.
Some groups carry heavy black sticks with which they beat against each other while they dance.Other groups wave handkerchiefs in the air while they perform.The dances are usually performed near a pub so that when they're over, the dancers and audience can sing some traditional folk songs over beer.The celebrations will often continue long into the night.
Morris dancing is a great English tradition but it's facing a big crisis.As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people are joining morris dancing groups.The dancers are getting older and older and eventually, if not protected, the tradition will die out within the next few decades.
If you've ever had the fortune to see morris dancing, you may understand why teenagers aren't rushing to sign up.Frankly, it's not exactly the coolest thing for an 18-year-old to do.Why dress up in bells and funny costumes when you could be going camping, playing sports or doing anything else
However, it would be a great shame to lose such a fun and lively part of England's history and culture.So here's a toast to the next generation of would-be morris dancers!Let's hope they don't leave it too late.
