McCabe, a passionate runner and animation (动画制作 ) lover, set out on a journey in January to create a
popular video of a dancing stick figure. He made it using the popular GPS-tracking app Strava, which allows
runners, cyclists, hikers and walkers to record their paths.
During ten months, McCabe performed 120 runs and recorded the paths. And then he used video-editing
software to connect all the paths together, presenting a hat-wearing stick figure dancing to the song Purple Hat
across the streets of Toronto. McCabe’s video is part of a growing movement known as GPS art. What sets his work
apart is that it is in motion (运动 ). Rather than just one piece of unmoving GPS art, which typically includes
mapping out a path ahead of time in a particular shape and then performing the ride or run, McCabe’s video is a
collection of many runs, requiring detailed planning.
While the dancing man might look simple, creating it was complex. Many of the runs were about 6 miles, but
some were longer or shorter. “You need to have a lot of images per second in order to present motion naturally,”
said McCabe.
“The inspiration for this generally comes from Strava art,” said McCabe, who had seen other people
experiment with creating GPS designs, but none that were in a video form. “As far as I know, it’s an original idea.
I’m pioneering Strava animation. The project was deeply enjoyable. It’s creativity coming from unexpected
sources.”
Other Strava artists say they do it for the same reason. “You’re exercising your brain and your body at the
same time. To mark the 2024 Summer Olympics, I drew the image of an athlete and the Olympic rings over London
by cycling 264 miles in one go, which was extremely tiring,” said Nicholas Georgiou, 59, a Strava artist and cyclist
based in Central London. “I like to create things even when it means pushing myself during tough tasks, and I just
find my bicycle is like my pencil. It feels good to be able to get out and achieve something,” he added.
24. What is a key feature of McCabe’s video of a dancing stick figure
A. It includes various dance styles.
B. It connects music with GPS tracking.
C. It mainly serves experienced runners.
D. It turns running routes into moving art.
25. What primary difficulty did McCabe face in creating the video
A. To record various running speeds.
B. To find suitable filming locations.
C. To plan long paths with a GPS app.
D. To ensure smooth movement effects.
26. What is McCabe’s contribution to the field of GPS art
A. Making GPS art creation easier.
B. Introducing a fresh way to present art.
C. Spreading traditional mapping techniques.
D. Using GPS technology for fitness tracking.
27. How does Nicholas Georgiou view the process of creating Strava art
A. It is challenging yet meaningful. B. It requires cooperative efforts.
C. It is professional and competitive. D. It leads to improved city planning.

Like dogs, wolves can recognize and respond to the voices of familiar humans more than those of strangers,
according to a recent study. The research challenges the belief that dogs’ ability to differentiate human voices is
due to selective breeding (选择性繁殖).
Holly Root Gutteridge and colleagues carried out experiments across five zoos and wildlife parks in Spain,
involving a total of 24 gray wolves. The team set up speakers and first played the animals the voice of a number of
strangers. Then, they played the wolves the voice of their keeper who would say familiar things to them in Spanish,
such as “Hey, what’s up, wolves ” The wolves raised their heads, pricked their ears up, and turned toward the
speaker. To test that the effect wasn’t accidental, the researchers went back to playing the wolves recordings of
strangers and found that they once more lost interest. Finally, to make sure that the wolves truly knew their keepers’
voices, the team mixed things up and had the keepers say a series of unfamiliar phrases. Once more, the results held
up.
Root Gutteridge pointed out the significance of wolves being able to differentiate between humans, despite the
fact that our species went our separate evolutionary (进化的) ways tens of millions of years ago.
Before this, there had been a limited number of studies on the topic of how animals differentiate between the
vocalizations (发声) of other species. Research has shown that our close cousins, gorillas, listen to people, but that
was expected.
Given the new finding, “chances are that lots of species are listening to us and getting to know us as
individuals,” Root Gutteridge said. “And it’s not all about us. Dogs could be listening to the neighbors’ cats and
understanding the difference between one meow or the other. If the abilities are that general, it means that animals
might be having a lot more cross-species interactions than we had thought about before.”
28. What established viewpoint does the recent research question
A. Wolves cannot understand human languages.
B. Wolves recognize the voices of humans better than dogs.
C. Dogs are the only animals that can differentiate human voices.
D. Selective breeding enables dogs to differentiate human voices.
29. How did the researchers test if the wolves truly recognized their keepers’ voices
A. By asking strangers to reproduce the keepers’ voices.
B. By letting the keepers say unfamiliar phrases in Spanish.
C. By changing the playback speed of the keepers’ recordings.
D. By playing recordings of strangers speaking familiar phrases.
30. Why are gorillas mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To stress their close relationship with humans.
B. To offer additional evidence for the recent study.
C. To point out another species that can differentiate voices.
D. To explain how animals’ ability to differentiate humans’ voices developed.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The focus of the future studies.
B. The limitations of the research.
C. The significance of the research.
D. The uniqueness of the experiments.

Jeffrey Boakye, a writer and teacher from London, is right to think that the stories we tell our children shape
their future values. Recent research from the End Sexism in Schools campaign also established that children in the
UK are still living off a worryingly limited diet of male authors and male main characters.
Our research confirms that the novels Boakye mentions in his recent article are in the top five most taught in
years 7 to 9. But boys need to be taught to listen to and respect female voices as powerful, and to be empathetic to
the viewpoints of women and girls. This is essential in tackling one of the root causes of male violence against
women and girls. And girls need to be taught that our expectations of them are not tied to life-denying gender
stereotypes (性别刻板印象).
English literature could be taught by allowing teachers and students to decide together, exploring relevant and
important themes, including those Boakye identifies. The techniques of reading, analyzing and understanding can
be taught with examples, but all students need not answer the same questions on the same books, in class or in
exams. The current system is more convenient for teachers and graders, but it’s also deeply repetitive. Let the kids
choose their own texts: It’ll be less boring and we might just learn something in the end.
Parents—challenge your schools to change. Teachers—you have the ability to make these changes. It is our
duty as their parents, educators and carers to teach children more books by women, and more books with female
main characters. If this means leaving out some of the so-called classics, then so be it.
32. What does the underlined word “empathetic” most probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Understanding. B. Indifferent.
C. Enthusiastic. D. Approving.
33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. The novels Boakye mentions are boring.
B. The current system benefits students more than teachers.
C. More say should be given to students about what to read.
D. Teachers and students could do literature research together.
34. What does the author suggest English literature teachers do
A. Ask more open-ended questions.
B. Select more materials by females.
C. Focus more on reading techniques.
D. Reduce the use of classic literature.
35. Which of the following could be a suitable title for the text
A. Enriching the literary diet of children B. Reading literature for pleasure
C. Understanding children’s literature D. Challenging gender stereotypes

Cotton or plastic: which kind of bag is better for the environment Many of us would naturally say that the
cotton bag is best, but that might only be true if you use that bag thousands of times. Surprised Keep reading and
we’ll explain.
36 . Its production releases toxins (毒素), and it’s often discarded (丢弃的) after a single use, leading
to more production. Disposed (处理后的) plastic can sit in landfills for centuries or enter the sea, harming wildlife
and breaking down into polluting microplastics.
Because of these factors, many people are reducing their plastic use. 37 . While cotton bags break down
more naturally than plastic, their production uses more energy, water and pesticides. They are also heavier, leading
to higher carbon emissions during transport. An article from Columbia University suggests that cotton shopping
bags need to be used over 7,000 times before they are more sustainable than plastic ones.
It’s not just about shopping bags. Lightweight plastic components in cars and planes help reduce fuel use and
emissions. 38 , the amount of land, water and chemicals needed to produce enough natural textiles and
leather would be enormous. Researchers have been looking to see if carbon could be captured during the
production of plastics, reducing the amount in the atmosphere.
One other characteristic of plastic might actually be the key to this issue. 39 , but it also means it can
be used to make items that can be reused again and again. The problem is that we often don’t. Plastic can cause
serious harm to the environment, and efforts to throw less of it away can reduce this. 40 .
A. However, the situation is complex
B. Re-using it more could be one way to achieve this
C. Plastic is undoubtedly harmful to the environment
D. If they are often recycled and turned into new products
E. If we didn’t use so much plastic in clothing and footwear
F. Many people believe that cotton bags are always environmentally friendly
G. The fact that plastic lasts for centuries is what causes much of the environmental harm

When I was 15, I won a scholarship to study at a music school in Somerset. I had always dreamed of being a
cellist (大提琴手). I practiced every day—getting up at 6 am to work on my music basics, practicing during lunch,
and spending extra time with my cello after lessons.
A year later, while preparing for an important competition, I pushed myself too hard. I was playing a difficult
piece when I felt something snap (断裂) in my forearm. A sharp, burning pain spread from my hand to my arm.
After a few days of no improvement, I began to panic. Weeks went by, and I still couldn’t play or even write
properly. Despite seeking medical advice, no effective treatment was provided.
Months passed, and I still had to attend classes with my arm in a support band. All the concerts and
competitions I had worked so hard for passed by. Helpless, I began to ask myself: Who was I without my cello
The loss weighed heavily on me, and I was so heartbroken that I had to be hospitalized. My parents were very
worried about me.
Then something unexpected happened. I needed a new picture for my work collection, so I booked a photo
shoot at a studio. The photographer suggested I photograph with my cello. At first, I wasn’t sure, as I didn’t see
myself as a cellist anymore. But I brought it anyway and sat down for the photos.
As he took pictures, the photographer became excited. He said joyfully, “This is it! You light up with the
instrument.” His words, along with the familiar feeling of the cello between my legs, made me realize something.
Through the camera, I didn’t look like a heartbroken musician—I looked like someone connected to a living art.
The photographer encouraged me to explore different poses, reminding me, “The music is still inside you.”
That moment gave me a sense of peace and hope. Maybe I hadn’t lost my identity—I was just waiting to
rediscover it.

few minutes and the pain was still present, but I pushed through it. I carefully followed my doctors’ advice, adding
simple exercises to my daily routine. The progress was encouraging, which filled my parents with relief and joy.
They offered support every step of the way. With each practice, my confidence grew, and I rediscovered the joy of

Paragraph 1:
With that in mind, I began a treatment plan that included targeted exercises. At first, the training only lasted a
few minutes and the pain was still present, but I pushed through it. The most important part was to play the cello
every day. The cramp in my arm made me feel powerless. But I didn’t give up. I knew the cello is a very expressive
instrument. The performer’s emotions can be directly transmitted to the audience through it. I was guided by this
feeling. I loved it and I was sure I could succeed. Finally, I was cured and could play the cello again.
Paragraph 2:
I realized that my experience could make a difference to others. So I began to volunteer in some hospitals,
taking some photos with children who suffered from injuries. When I took photos of them, they felt happy. And I
could also see their joy. I even started to lead workshops, focusing not just on skills but also on emotional strength.
I shared my story to offer hope to the people facing similar challenges. Music became not merely a means of my
personal recovery, but a way to lift others’ spirits, reminding us that everything is possible.

W: Jason, you came so early today.
M: Yes, much earlier than usual. I took a ride in my neighbour’s car. He found a job in our building the other day.
W: Then you won’t be late for work any more.
M:Yeah. Anything interesting in the newspaper
W: Well, a research team in a Japanese university has developed a face mask with “smart” capabilities. It can
translate the wearer’s speech into several different languages.
M: That’s really amazing. What are they
W: English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and French. And it is estimated to cost $400 per mask.
M: It sounds expensive to many people.
W: Indeed. I hope it’ll cost much less in the future. By the way, will you attend the business meeting at 10:00 am
this morning
M: Not really. I’m scheduled to meet a client then. And I’ll get my files ready before that.

W: Hello, this is CBC Company. Is that Mr Pitt
M: Yes, this is Pitt speaking.
W: Mr Pitt, we are very pleased with your interview last week, so we would like to offer you the position you
applied for.
M: That’s great. I am very honored to be able to join your company.
W: Could you come to work in two days, next Monday
M: I’d love to, but I’m afraid I need one more week than that. My mother fell down the stairs by accident and had
her left arm broken. I’ve to stay here with her, as it’s inconvenient for her to do anything.
W: Sorry to hear that. But does that mean you’ll be able to come to work the week after next week
M: Yes. By then, my mother will have left the hospital and my father will also have come back from his business
trip.
W: OK. So see you then.
M: Thank you for your calling, madam.

M:What kind of book are you taking, Jane
W: It’s a book called Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It is an inspiring novel that tells about how a young boy called
Auggie with facial differences handles the challenges and prejudices at school, and finally makes friends with
many classmates. I just picked it up for my brother.
M:Your brother Then what kind of book do you like to read
W: History. You know, my grandparents are history teachers. They usually read to me when I was young.
M:You must want to be a history teacher like them.
W: Not really. I want to become a great author in the future. Reading history helps sharpen my analytical and
critical thinking skills.
M: I agree. I also like reading history books. And I’m especially interested in the history of ancient Greece. What
about you
W: The Roman Empire. I have a dozen books about this period.

W: Hello. Welcome to the program. With the days getting shorter and dusk falling earlier, many people start to take
indoor activities with evening courses topping the list in Shanghai. It’s reported that Shanghai’s night courses have
been trendy among those aged from 18 to 55 who usually have day jobs. The public night school program initiated
by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism has been in operation for almost 10 years with
the aim of extending culture and arts education to a wider range of learners. Participants can choose the course they
like. Each course will have 12 lessons and will be given by professional tutors for about 500 yuan in total, far below
the market price. The fall semester has nearly 25,000 students and has begun at 400 teaching locations across the
city since this month. Different from traditional classes, the presence of foreign teachers is a big highlight. Shahar
Levy, a 46-year-old Israeli guide, is a foreign teacher of the Shanghai night course, teaching T’ai Chi at the
Shanghai Mass Art Center. His class was sold out within six seconds when its online registration opened in August.
Anyone interested in any of the night courses, please contact our staff at the given phone number.
