I really love this saying, “Love is endless and unlimited.” For me, there's a story behind it. When I used to hand out chocolates with beautiful paper bags, my friends always told me, “You are wasting time and money. No one here believes in nameless gifts.” To be honest, I have noticed that people here do donate in temples. They give food to the poor, and provide clothes and other things for whoever is in need.
I think maybe I am the one who starts to think of the dogs in our neighborhood. When I moved into this new community, I noticed that there were two street dogs. They were wounded and homeless, and everyone used to stay away from them and hit them when they came any closer. They were becoming thinner and thinner and they would die of hunger sooner or later.
But my habit of loving dogs has changed all these things. I began to walk close to them and give them food regularly. When I touched their heads and gave love to them, I could see tears in their eyes. My friends noticed, and now even kids and elders in the community provide them with food and also love them. I am really glad to see that I saved their lives.
What I started will lead to beautiful memories with them. They enjoy playing with me and they even have a particular pose when they see me. I see a sparkle in their eyes and a smile on their faces. They are priceless for me.

Mandy and Joe have been married for five years and they both love travelling to new countries. But while this shared hobby brings them together, it is also a source of contention. “I do all the planning and book,” says Mandy. “Don't get me wrong. I enjoy it, but if Joe paid a bit more attention, he wouldn't have turned up for a flight to Grenada packed for a winter city break. ‘Jumpers and boots?!’ I cried. ‘You're supposed to have packed shorts and T-shirts—it's 30℃ in the Caribbean!’ Then I realized he thought we were going to Granada, in Spain.”
How Joe and Mandy each approach their travel plans is just one example of the many ways in which men and women differ. Yet, is what goes on inside our minds and bodies really so different Furthermore, are we born that way
On this issue, scientists are divided. The majority of scientists believed that patterns of behaviour thought to be more male or female are learnt firstly from our parents, then from our peers(同龄人) and, ultimately, from the societies in which we live. As Simone de Beauvoir famously said, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”
On the other side of the fence sat those who believed that male and female brains are actually wired differently. In one study in which 34 monkeys were required to interact with different types of toys, the males showed a strong preference for toys with wheels rather than soft toys, whereas the females were noticeably drawn to soft toys. These preferences were clearly not the result of parental influence.
Whatever the truth behind the differences between men and women, we can safely conclude that although the social impact on how we think and behave is undeniable, there exists a biological contribution. The question that now needs answering is to what extent biology affects the choices we make and the way other people treat us.

In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers from the University of Zurich told 50 people they'd be receiving about $100. Half of the people were asked to spend that money on themselves, and half were asked to spend it on someone they knew. Before giving out any money, the researchers brought everyone into the lab and asked them to think about a friend they'd like to give a gift to and how much they would spend. They then performed functional MRI scans (扫描) to measure activity in three parts of the brain related to social behavior, generosity, happiness and decision-making.
Their choices—and their brain activity—seemed to depend on how they had promised to spend the money earlier. Those who had promised to spend money on other people tended to make more generous decisions throughout the experiment. They also had more interaction (相互作用) between the parts of the brain related to altruism(无私) and happiness, and they reported higher levels of happiness after the experiment was over.
Another piece of good news was that planning to give away just a little bit of money had the same effects on happiness as giving away a lot. “At least in our study, the amount spent did not matter,” says lead author Philippe Tobler. “Even little things have a beneficial effect—like bringing coffee to one's workmates.”
It's not yet clear how long these warm feelings last after being generous. But studies have shown that older people who are generous tend to have better health, says Tobler, and other research has suggested that spending money on others can be effective at lowering blood pressure. “Moreover, there is a positive connection between helping others and life expectancy (预期寿命),” he adds.
Next time you think that the best way to make yourself feel better is to buy yourself a treat, consider that the opposite is likely true. “It's worth giving it a try, even if you think it would not work,” Tobler says. “Repeated practice is probably needed so that giving becomes second nature.”

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Janet couldn't lift spirit all day, for she missed everything in New Jersey. Her family had just moved here from New Jersey, having rented a small restaurant, which was planned to open next Sunday. She helped her mother and father wash the kitchen supplies in the shiny Dew kitchen.
“I hate this stupid decision. I have lost all my friends in New Jersey. What should I do now?” Janet muttered to herself (喃喃自语).
“What's up?” her mother asked, and never stopped wiping the table and mopping the floor.
“Nothing.” Janet answered in a low voice. The girl had been complaining about the move but her parents had made the decision ignoring (忽视)her feelings. And now they were too busy to comfort her. What's worse, the first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to the new classmates surrounding her, and even harder to follow the teachers' pace. Faced with so many challenges, she felt depressed and gave a deep sigh. But the moment she saw her hardworking parents, she could do nothing but look forward and stopped her complaints.
On the day of the grand opening, the three were wearing broad smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant. Even Janet was in high spirits as she rushed around, seating guests, ordering dishes, and serving glasses of water. What a big day for her family!
At one of the tables sat a family with a girl who was about Janet's age. As she filled their glasses, Janet realized the girl was in her class. Janet lowered her head to avoid looking directly into her eyes, and she turned away from the table.
Janet's mother noticed what had happened, and followed Janet to the kitchen. “Honey, what are you doing back here We need you out and you are really a helper.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
“Mom, I don't want to be out there. There is a girl from my school!”
__________________________________________________________
Janet left the kitchen with a glass of lemonade and a plate of cookies.

参考范文:
“Mom, I don't want to be out there. There is a girl from my school! ” Janet sat in the corner, with her spirit sinking. Feeling Janet was in an embarrassment, her mother realized she had ignored Janet's feelings after the move. She expressed her sincere apology to Janet, holding Janet in her arms, and suggested that she make new friends by serving her a lemonade and some cookies. “Taking action is the most effective way to get rid of loneliness!” The instant Janet heard that, her eyes shone with a mixture of excitement and expectation.
Janet left the kitchen with a glass of lemonade and a plate of cookies. Nervous as she was, she accumulated/gathered her courage to approach the table where the girl sat, placing the lemonade and cookies down carefully. She bravely looked at the girl directly into the eyes. “Hello, I'm Janet. Thanks so much for coming to our restaurant! ” The girl looked up, with a bright smile on her rosy face, and gave her a big hug. They became close friends from then on. Most importantly, Janet's enthusiasm about new life was increasingly growing.单元检测卷(二)

Victor's hobby was collecting stamps. He had stamps from other countries, like England,Canada and China. On his birthday, can you guess what people gave him That's right—stamps.
Victor's favourite stamps came from France. He had almost every stamp from 1954 to 2009. He only needed one. That was a 1974 special edition. It was very hard to find.
He looked for it everywhere. He asked his friends and relatives to help him. But nobody could find the stamp. It made Victor very sad.
“Don't worry. Never give up,” his father said to him.“If you have enough patience, you'll find one one day.”
“I hope so,” Victor said.
Victor also liked writing. He had a penfriend in France. They wrote to each other every month. Victor's penfriend, Phillip, usually used new stamps to send letters. Sometimes, his mother gave him some stamps. Once Phillip's mother gave him a big, green stamp. It looked old. When Victor received the letter, he was very surprised. He looked carefully at the stamp. It was the 1974 special edition stamp. Victor was so happy. He told his sister, his mother and his father.
“You see,” his father said, “you did find your stamp. So, it's good to have two things in life.”
“What are they?” Victor asked.
“Friends and patience,” his father answered.

【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章以Mandy和Joe的故事为切入点,主要介绍男人和女人在行为模式上不同的原因。

D

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
“Mom, I don't want to be out there. There is a girl from my school!”

Most importantly, Janet's enthusiasm about new life was increasingly growing.
