Have you ever had anything unforgettable between you and your neighbors Mr. Lee is our neighbor. He is a retired (退休的) doctor. He likes planting flowers and has the finest garden full of different kinds of flowers.
People can see the beautiful flowers from the street. I used to think there wasn’t a flower that he didn’t grow.
Our neighbor lives near us, but we know him little. We just say hello to him as we walk past his house on the way to the city park. Weeks ago, I heard that he lost his wife because of a strange illness. I was sure he was lonely because I saw his sad look on his face. So I decided to help him smile. After school. I would usually go to his house and talk with him. He told me all about his flowers. On rainy days, I also went to his house. I sang and danced, and he would clap (鼓掌) his hands and say “Great”.
For me, it was a perfect stage (阶段). Looking back, he might think that this trouble was nearly ending.
I thought I could help him smile, but he also encouraged me a lot. Just as the saying goes, “Helping others is helping ourselves.” That’s what I learn from this experience.

Long ago, there was a monster called “Nian”. At the end of winters, he often appeared in a village and ate the animals and villagers. The monster seemed very strong and nobody could fight him. So the villagers had to hide in the mountains to keep themselves safe.
One day, a smart old man came to the village. He told an old woman how to scare Nian away. That evening when Nian arrived at the village, he saw only the old woman’s house was bright. Nian got close to the house. Suddenly, he heard the noise of firecrackers (鞭炮). The monster felt afraid and jumped. And then he found the house was covered in red paper. This scared him even more and he ran out of the village quickly. When the other villagers returned, they saw that the old woman didn’t die.
The villagers later learned that Nian was afraid of red color and loud noises. They decided to put up red couplets (对联), set off firecrackers and stay up late when it was time for Nian’s visit at the end of winter. That is the legend (传说) of how the Spring Festival celebration began.

Do you know what the world’s tallest animals are How do they sleep and drink
The world’s tallest animals are giraffes. You may think it’s difficult for them to sleep, but they have no such problems because giraffes don’t often stop for a snooze (打盹). Although they are so tall—males (雄性) can grow up to 18 feet, giraffes actually have the fewest sleep of all animals. They sleep about half an hour a day in the wild. When they sleep, they seldom lie down and they sleep for minutes at a time, because it’s difficult for them to get up again and it’s dangerous in the wild. But the giraffes in the zoo sleep around 4.6 hours every day, mostly at night. They usually lie down to sleep.
Drinking water may cause problems for giraffes because their long necks are too long to reach the ground. They must spread their legs in an uncomfortable position (姿势) to drink water. It makes them easily hunted by other animals like Africa’s big cats. As a result, they usually get water from the plants that they eat. They only need to drink water every few days.
21.Why isn’t it difficult for giraffes to sleep
22.How long do giraffes sleep a day in the wild, about half an hour or 4.6 hours

One night when I was in the second grade, I saw something on the news. It was about a group of homeless people sleeping outside in the cold. They didn’t have a warm and comfortable place to stay. That really bothered (使……担心) me.
So I decided to start a club. The goal was to raise money to help the homeless. I called it the Rock Club as I decided to make beautiful paintings on the rocks and sell them. When I first started, we only had about five members. But that quickly grew to about twenty. It wasn’t hard to ask people to join the club, because people came up to ask me if they could join.
We spent all of our free time painting rocks. We painted animals, flowers and even the names of sports teams. We went around the school to search for teachers and hoped they could buy our rocks. By New Year’s Day we raised thirty-three dollars and then we decided to give the money to a local homeless shelter (收容所). We were happy that we could help the homeless by ourselves.
A few days later, our Rock Club’s story came out in the newspaper. We all felt proud that we did something and people began to give more attention to the needs of the homeless in our town. Our school decided to start a program just for kids to help the homeless shelter.
Something as simple as some rocks, some paintings made me realize that you’re never too young and that you don’t need much to make a big difference.

28.How did the club make money

I was careful to behave as well as possible, to persuade the King to give me my freedom. Lilliputians soon began to lose their fear of me. They called me the Man-Mountain. Sometimes I lay down and let them dance on my hand, and from time to time children came to play games in my hair. By now I was able to speak their language well.
One day the King invited me to watch the regular entertainments, which are greatly enjoyed by him, his family, and his lords and ladies. I was most interested in the rope-dancing. A very thin rope is fixed thirty centimeters above the ground. People who want to become the King’s most important officials jump and dance on this rope, and whoever jumps highest without falling gets the best job. Sometimes the King orders his lords to dance on the rope, to show that they can still do it. This sport is, of course, rather dangerous, and there are occasional (偶尔的) deaths as a result. It seems a strange way of choosing officials.
There was another interesting entertainment. The King holds a stick in front of him, and sometimes moves it up and down. One by one, people come up to him and jump over the stick or crawl under it. They go on jumping and crawling as the King moves the stick. The winner is the one who jumps and crawls for the longest time, and he receives a blue ribbon (缎带) to wear round his waist. The second best receives a red ribbon, and the third best gets a green one. Many of the Lilliput lords wear their ribbons proudly at all times. I had certainly never seen entertainment like this in any of the countries I had visited before.

In 1971, a poor young man traveled across the country, trying to make a start for himself. On the way, he had completely run out of money, so he had no food to eat and had to live in his car.
This continued until one morning. After sleeping in his car for a week, he walked into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast. After eating his first good meal in weeks, he found he had to lie to the owner, telling him he had lost his wallet. He was so embarrassed (尴尬的) that his face turned red. The owner walked behind the young man’s seat. He bent down (弯腰) and stood up with a 20 dollars in his hands. It seemed as if it had fallen on the floor. “Young man, you must have dropped this,” the owner said. The young man was so surprised that he couldn’t believe his eyes! He quickly paid for the breakfast and left.
On the way out of town, he realized, “Maybe nobody dropped the money at all. Maybe the owner just wanted to help me in a way that didn’t embarrass me. What a kind person he is! If I have a chance in the future, I will do the same to help others.”

Recently I had a trip to Sydney with my parents. We visited the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals. Some are native (当地的) to Australia and can only be found there. There are more than 500 animals there, including kangaroos (袋鼠), koalas and crocodiles (鳄). They are kept in their natural environment. I like the Wildlife Park better than a zoo. In zoos, most of the animals are in cages (笼子).
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We could touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there, too. They looked very cuddly (令人想拥抱的). Although we couldn’t carry koalas, I could take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir (纪念物) of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater (淡水) and saltwater crocodiles (鳄鱼). Some of them are very big and scary (吓人的) with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species (种类) of birds. I saw an old parrot (鹦鹉). It could “talk” and made a great impression on me.
I enjoyed the trip very much. There was so much to see.

So, many people think of it as the birthplace of Chinese film.

Most people don’t take first aid (急救) training because they are busy. But in fact, everyone should learn first aid because it is helpful. Here are its good points.
Help to save lives. First aid helps you save lives. Giving someone first aid can help him or her get better soon. It teaches you how to keep calm (镇静的) in special situations.
Help someone feel better. Not every accident or injury needs treatment (治疗) in the hospital. But it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to help someone injured, even though the injury isn’t very serious. You can use first aid to help anyone in need like a child crying because of a cold.
Keep a situation from getting worse. Sometimes, if a person doesn’t receive first aid in time, he or she will get worse. If you offer him or her care, he or she will feel better.

Tony was a twelve- year- old student. His school closed at three o’clock every day. His parents usually worked until dinner time and got home very late. So after school Tony went to his grandma’s house every day.
One afternoon, Tony walked to his grandma’s house as usual. When he reached the door, he found he couldn’t find his key anywhere. “Oops, I lost my key,” he said to himself.
Tony rang the doorbell (门铃), but no one came. He walked around the house and looked through every window. Usually, his grandma was in the living room waiting for him. Today she wasn’t there. Tony felt worried. He found the kitchen window was open. So he climbed inside.
Tony found his grandma in her bedroom. She fell down and hurt her leg. Tony ran to call his father. Soon his father came over and took her to hospital.
A few hours later, Tony’s grandma was safely home. Tony told her about his lost key. She was happy that he found a way to help her. She smiled and told him she had two things for him. In 1988, Wang Chengbang retired (退休) from the army. Instead of enjoying a relaxing life, he volunteered to save the soil from desertification (沙漠化) by planting trees in Korla, Xinjiang.
It is no easy job. The high temperature in Korla makes it difficult for anyone to work day after day in the sunshine. Besides, water is a big problem. In fact, Wang Chengbang’s work in the first few years failed as very few trees survived (存活).
But Wang Chengbang didn’t give up. “After trying many different ways. I learned how to grow young trees in a better way,” said Wang Chengbang. He also worked out new ways to save water. With his hard work, more and more trees survived. He finally planted more than 1.5 million trees. Those green trees prevent desertification, make the air cleaner and protect people from the hot sun. Now, Korla is a model city in environmental protection.
Wang Chengbang is also successful in fighting cancer (癌症). In 2005, he had cancer and the doctor told him that he had only six months to live. However, he continued taking care of his trees rather than lying on the hospital bed. “Working is the best medicine. Planting trees helps to fight cancer,” he often jokes.
Now at the age of 85, Wang Chengbang is still working.

Helen Monson has always been interested in helping her community. Her first volunteer experience was for the American Red Cross when she was in high school. When she was a school teacher, she also spent time being a volunteer. One year, she organized a Super Saturday fun day for the kids in the community.
After she retired, she started volunteering to help the old. When her father was older, he was not able to see as well as he used to, which made her sad because he had always enjoyed reading. She felt that it would be fun to read to elderly people in her community. She also helped one woman write her stories. Ann was almost 100 years old, and Helen wrote down information about her life when she visited her. She put the information in a book and got it published. Ann was very excited to share her life story with her children and grandchildren.

Sally and I went to an art museum yesterday. The museum was having a two-week show. Lots of very old artworks from two cities in Italy were on show.
I liked one of the paintings best. The painting was very beautiful. The light on the woman’s dress made it look as if she was really sitting there. A note on the wall told me about the artist and the painting.
There were quite a lot of paintings in the museum. Some paintings were stored away (被保存). We saw them on the computer. After enjoying the artworks, we went to a room with costumes (戏装) in the museum. There my sister dressed up like one of the people in the old paintings. That was her favorite part of visiting the museum.

Beethoven, a famous musician in the world, was born in Germany in 1770. In his childhood Beethoven didn’t have a happy life. His father was a singer. When he was only four, his father began to make him practice hour after hour on different musical instruments. If he did not put his heart into it, his father would beat him or make it hard on him.
Beethoven loved music and he learned so fast that he was able to go around to give concerts when he was only a boy of eleven. At the age of seventeen, he won high praise from Mozart, the great musician at that time.

The life of the animals in the zoo is different from that in the wildlife park (野生动物公园). In the zoo, most of the animals are very sad. They have to stay in cages all day and wait for the zoo keepers to feed them. They can’t go out of the cages, so they have to walk round and round.
However, the wildlife park is a good place for them. All the animals there live in the open air. They can run, jump and play happily, and look for food by themselves. They are protected there because people are not allowed to hunt. The most important thing is that they are free and happy in the wildlife park.
Most of the animals in the wildlife park are friendly. But some are scary, such as lions, wolves and tigers. Don’t worry. A special bus can take you to see the animals. You are quite safe inside the bus. How exciting it is if a tiger or a lion tries to watch you through the window!

A little stream (小溪) ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert. “I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert,” she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly vanishing (消失) into the sand. After many tries, she still failed. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If wind can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered, “That’s because the wind can fly, but I cannot.”
“That’s because you can’t give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the wind and it can take you across me,” said the desert. “Give up what I am now No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea. “The wind can carry the vapor (蒸汽) across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again,” said the desert. “And whether you’re a river or vapor, your nature never changes.” After hearing this, the little stream went into the open arms of the wind. It carried her to the next stage of her life.
The course of our lives is like the experience of the little stream. If we want to go through difficulties in our life to head for success, we should also change the way we are.

We’re thrown into a social situation, and everyone has his worries. Have you ever met any problems at school Have you ever got in trouble with your teacher Are you popular in your class If not, how to deal with it
What to do if you don’t feel popular
Try to take part in activities. Call your friends. Plan to do something. The worst feeling is staying at home alone, because it makes you feel even more lonely.
Try to make new friends. Choose friends carefully, not just because you think they’re popular. And remember, making good friends takes time. Choosing a popular person to be friends with is okay, if they are nice.
Be yourself. If you want to become friends with someone who’s popular, don’t make yourself into someone you are not just to impress(给人印象)that person.
Be nice. Be friendly. Be outgoing. But don’t overdo it! Talk to trusted friends if you are feeling really bad. Or you might want to write it down in a diary.
Do something special for yourself. You could take pictures of your friends, or collect their school pictures, and take a collage(拼贴画)to hang on your wall. This will remind you, when you are feeling unpopular, that you really do have friends.
Think up your own ideas. These suggestions(建议)might not work for everyone.

“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me that I should do this and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Zhang Hua, a middle school student in Guangzhou. Do you have the same problem Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were young. Why aren’t some parents so friendly in their children’s eyes
One of the most important reasons is when someone becomes a parent, he/she often worries about things. Since you were born (出生), your parents have worried about everything about you. They do a lot for you. Though something would make you angry, they care about you and worry about you. They worry about your choice (选择) of friends, the food you eat, your study at school, how much sleep you get and so on. All these things are part of your life, because they want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Phone them if you get home later than usual. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Talk about your ideas with them and they may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to think why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help that you can give them. When you become a parent, they may be able to help you learn how to get on with your children.
