Are you interested in ancient Britain Take a trip back in time and discover the Britain ancestors.
Avebury, Wiltshire
This village is the proud home of the largest stone circle in Europe. Built during the New Stone Age (around 3000 BC), archaeologists think it was used to comfort the power of nature. The nearby Avebury Manor (庄园) let people know how the village developed over the centuries. Unlike others, visitors are welcome to sit on the chairs, and lie on the beds.
Skara Brae, Orkney Islands
Older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza, Skara Brae is unusually well-kept. So much that it’s been described as the most remarkable prehistoric monument in all of Europe. The Neolithic village is made up of eight round houses, connected by a series of small passages. The village was home to farmers, hunters and fishermen and the network of homes includes a workshop and prison. Be sure to wrap up warm against the fierce Orkney winds.
Butser Ancient Farm, Hampshire
Experimental archaeologist Dr Peter J Reynolds founded Butser Ancient Farm in 1970 with a special vision: to create a working ancient farm where fellow archaeologists could explore their theories on how people lived and worked during the Iron Age. Near South Downs National Park, the farm builds ancient houses based on real archaeological sites from around the country.
Maiden Castle, Dorset

Ever since I graduated from high school, I’ve worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o’clock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why I’m so relieved (解脱的) to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate (高估) the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the factory, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other choices have become only too clear. “This job pays well, but it’s hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard and keep reading,” she added. When I’m back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seem too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陈腐的) now ring true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.
4. What does the author think of his summer holiday
A. It was no holiday for him at all.
B. It brought him complete confidence.
C. It was a relief from his hard work at school.
D. It offered him a chance to make more friends.
5. What can we infer about most college students from the text
A. They do better in the real world. B. They often regret their decisions.
C. They think too highly of themselves. D. They are expert at operating machines.
6. What is the biggest pressure for blue-collar workers
A. A low income. B. Loss of work.
C. Working conditions. D. Less breaks.
7. How did the working experiences change the author
A. He became responsible for his work.
B. He learned to be more practical at work.
C. He began to respect blue-collar workers.
D. He came to appreciate his college education.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. D

One recent study on the link between music and stress found that music can help calm pediatric emergency room (儿科急诊室) patients. In the trial with 42 children ages 3 to 11, University of Alberta researchers found that patients who listened to relaxing music while getting an IV injection (静脉注射) reported significantly less pain, and some showed significantly less distress, compared with patients who did not listen to music. In addition, in the music-listening group, more than two-thirds of the doctors reported that the IVs were very easy to administer—compared with 38 percent of doctors treating the group that did not listen to music.
“There is growing scientific evidence showing that the brain responds to music in very different ways,” says Lisa Hartling, PhD, professor of pediatrics at the University of Alberta and lead author of the study. “Playing music for kids during painful medical procedures is a simple means that can make a big difference.”
Music can help adult patients, too. Researchers at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore found that patients in palliative care (保守治疗) who took part in live music therapy (治疗) sessions reported relief from continuous pain. Music therapists worked closely with the patients to individually design the means, and patients took part in singing, instrument playing, lyric discussion and even song writing as they worked toward accepting an illness or the end-of-life issues.
“Active music engagement allowed the patients to reconnect with the healthy parts of themselves, even in the most weakest condition or disease-related suffering,” says music therapist Melanie Kwan, co-author of the study and president of the Association for Music Therapy, Singapore. “When their serious pain symptoms were relieved, patients were finally able to rest.”
8. What is the purpose of the experiment
A. To test the effect music has on child patients.
B. To prove child patients prefer listening to music.
C. To reduce the doctors’ stress during the treating.
D. To show most doctors apply music to the treatment.
9. Which of the following is the music therapist’s job
A. Playing light music. B. Regulating patients’ workouts.
C. Designing suitable treatment. D. Helping patients accept reality.
10. What can be inferred from Kwan’s words
A. Music can help patients reduce the pain.
B. Adult patients take an active part in music.
C. Patient brains respond to music in different ways.
D. Music therapists can point out the symptoms of patients.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. How music therapists design music
B. Music therapy can improve health
C. Why music is associated with relaxation
D. Live music excites and activates the body
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. A 11. B

Besides being a lovely and important part of marine ecosystems, baby seals might have an unusual ability. They can change the pitch (音高) of their voices to be better understood, like humans do, a new study found. A person or animal using this skill is being what’s called “vocally plastic”, or adjusting their vocal (声音的) signals in response to environmental changes that overlap or cover up their voices, according to the study published Monday in the journal Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society.
The researchers had a number of reasons for wanting to test the vocal changes of baby harbor seals. The rare ability to copy new sounds — vocal learning — had been seen previously among adult harbor seals and a few other mammal species (哺乳动物), according to the authors. And very few mammals have the ability to change their vocal pitch to sound higher or lower, which is important for human communication. “By looking at one of the few other mammals who may be capable of learning sounds, we can better understand how we, humans, acquire speech, and finally why we are such chatty animals,” said Andrea Ravignani.
As the seals heard a speaker play a 45-minute recording consisting of high noise, low noise or no playback over several days, they naturally called out. When the baby seals heard louder sea noises, they lowered their vocal pitch. During more intense noise levels, the pups used a steadier pitch — and one seal raised its voice. This behavior, called the Lombard Effect, is typical for human speech when people talk louder to be more understandable, the authors said.
“The findings showed that seal pups have a more advanced control over their vocalisations than assumed up until now,” Ravignani said in a statement. “This control seems to be already present at only a few weeks of age. This is astonishing, as few other mammals seem capable of that.”
12. What does paragraph 1 tell us about baby seals
A. They are cute but rare.
B. They can change vocal pitch.
C. They can understand human words.
D. They can be harmed by environmental changes.
13. What is the researchers’ main reason for studying baby seals
A. To better understand adult harbor seals.
B. To show their rare ability of vocal learning.
C. To know more about human communication.
D. To find out how to protect them from extinction.
14. What does Ravignani intend to express in the last paragraph
A. Baby seals can control their vocalisations when born.
B. Baby seals’ vocal ability is out of scientists’ expectation.
C. Scientists have long understood the vocal ability of baby seals.
D. Many other baby mammals are better at vocalisations than baby seals.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. A surprising fact about baby seals
B. Baby seals are cuter than assumed
C. Harbor seals are in danger of extinction
D. The amazing survival ability of baby seals

【答案】范文一
Recently we have held a heated discussion about the problem whether mankind should explore space or not.Different people about it has different opinions.
Some people hold the view that space exploration will not only enable us to understand how the universe develop but also help farming to grow more food and apply the new technology to our life. While other people argue that we should stop exploring space because it costs too much time and money.
From my point of view,it is very necessary for human to explore space.Because it not only can provide the world with many different benefits, but also can solve people's shortterm and longterm problems.
范文二
Space Exploration Is a Waste of Time and Money
Everyone gets excited by the news of the most recent space flights, and I too share in people’s sense of awe and wonder at the photos from space that we see. Having said that, it is hard to believe that the high cost of space flight is justified. We should be spending our money more wisely, on what people need.
I cannot understand spending all this money on expensive research and experiments when so many people need food. Around the world, millions of people are hungry and dying of starvation. On the other hand, we hear on TV that for as little as a dollar a day, a child in Africa can be saved. Considering the billions spent on space travel, it just seems a better investment to feed the hungry.
Besides, there are a lot of unsolved mysteries on the earth. So why are we going into space to explore There are still many things to discover in the ocean depths and the Antarctic. But we do not even have to go that far. Science has yet to unlock all the mysteries of the atom, and there are many realms of technology that we are just beginning to understand and explore.
Finally, it just doesn’t seem a very wise investment to go to space. We have too many needs here on the earth to be wasting our effort on space exploration.
第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Curtis Whitson knew Arroyo Seco very well. He had been to the camping site across the river many times with his friends.
But this time, it was different. Now he was with family: his wife and his 13-year-old son. And as they approached the river late in the afternoon, he found that the usually quiet river had turned wild due to a heavy rain two days before. It was impossible for them to cross the river to reach the camping site or return because it was too late.
“We cannot camp in the wildness and I have to send out a message for rescue,” Whitson thought.
He looked around and found a stick. He pulled out his pocketknife and carved “Help” in it. Then he tied a red rope to catch people's attention. He threw it into the river, but it did not float far and got stuck.
“Why not try our luck with our green Nalgene water bottle and put a note in it ” suggested his wife,
Whitson did as he was told and carved the word “help” on it before he threw the bottle into the river. This time, it worked perfectly.
“All right, we have tried our best to get help,” Whitson said, “But we should not just wait in this dangerous wildness in case…”
They walked up and down along the river bank for about 30 minutes and found a flat place to set up their tents. They collected enough dead branches and wood to keep a campfire going on all night. As the darkness closed in, they placed on the top of the camp a headlamp with its flashing light on. They waited until 10: 30 pm. But nothing happened. So they went to bed. Before turning in, Whitson added more wood to the fire to keep the dangerous animals away.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Shortly after midnight, they heard a helicopter circling above their tents. Whitson jumped out of his sleeping bag excitedly and ran out to get the headlamp. While flashing the light at the helicopter, they kept waving theirs and shouting until they heard the magic words, “This is Search and Rescue. You have been found. We are looking for a good place to land. Please stay where you are.
When the officers dropped them back at the rescue center, the family learned more about the whole story. It turned out that a man living downstream saw the water bottle when he was fishing in the river. It was trapped in his fishing net. He picked it up and saw the word “Help!” on it. Immediately, he sent it to the rescuers, who found the note inside the water bottle. On hearing the story, Whitson's wife jumped up and hugged his husband and son, whispering to them, “What a romantic adventure!”2023—2024年度高一年级下学期期末考试模拟卷

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Shortly after midnight, they heard a helicopter circling above their tents.
