2025 promises to be another year for great art exhibitions. From 15th-century Italy to new works by living artists, there is something for everyone. We round up Turner and Constable from Tate Britain, which is the UK’s national gallery of British art from 1500 to the present day.
Plenty of artists who have big anniversaries (周年纪念日) in 2025 are not getting exhibitions. Jean Francois Millet might have been expected to get better recognition than the small show at the National Gallery with Life on the Land (August 7 — October 19, 2025). Robert Rauschenberg will have a collection of exhibitions in 2025 across the globe. Tate Britain will give J. M. W. Turner major birthday honors on November 27, 2025: a joint (共同的) show with John Constable which runs until April 12, 2026 (the latter’s anniversary).
Chalk and cheese painters and personalities, the two men had very different but equally influential landscape styles. This is being described as “the definitive exhibition”, a combination of the artists’ personal stories, with added details from sketchbooks and artifacts, running alongside a context of industrialization, urbanization, and changing views of landscape. On one hand, Turner was driven by his love of travel, drama, and narrative, on the other, Constable was characterized by his careful observation and homesickness, but above all both loved nature and sought the best means they could to represent it.
This is billed as the heavyweight battle of the year but these artists complement (补充) each other. However you like your landscape, you will find it here.
21. When will the exhibition at Tate Britain take place
A. On April 16. B. On August 7.
C. On October 19. D. On November 27.
22. What did Turner and Constable have in common
A. They were born in the same year.
B. They were major landscape painters.
C. They shared similar personalities.
D. They reflected homesickness in their works.
23. Where is this text probably taken from
A. An art magazine. B. A review of paintings.
C. A history textbook. D. A guidebook to a city.

Kari Lehman can’t imagine life without the free after-school program at Beaver River School in Beaver Falls, New York. Each afternoon, her two sons, aged 7 and 11, get hands-on help with homework, a healthy snack, fun activities and chances to make friends — while she and her husband finish their workdays. “They get their homework done, move their bodies, socialize — and then our evenings are free for family time,” Lehman says. “So we can have dinner together and spend time as a family. It would actually change our lives, our family, if we didn’t have this program.”
The program at Beaver River is just one of 18 after-school programs at schools across New York, serving over 1,200 students at no cost. Each day, the first hour is for academics (学业). School-day teachers work one-on-one with children who need extra help in math, reading, or any other school subject. The second hour is for hands-on projects. Students try activities in science, cooking, art, health, and career skills while also learning teamwork and building confidence.
Last year, nearly 60% of students participating (参加) in the programs improved their math grades, around 80% of students got A’s in English exams, and close to 100% of parents reported satisfaction. In one survey of the parents of more than 700 students, 93% of parents said their children showed overall well-being because of their participation in the programs.
Beyond academics, the programs host family nights, and community events. Last year, the programs each hosted more than 25 events for families, providing opportunities for the whole family to connect with the school, with nearly 100% of attendees rating the events as effective. “The program makes us feel like we’re a part of the community by bringing the families in and helping us build relationships,” says Makenna Grunert, a mother who has two kids.
24. What do we learn from Lehman’s words
A. Children should learn to do housework.
B. The program takes a long time every day.
C. She is quite satisfied with the program.
D. Her family seldom gather for dinner now.
25. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. Educators working for the program.
B. The daily class schedule of the program.
C. A hands-on project for senior students.
D. The importance of after-school programs.
26. Which is the percentage of the participating students raising their math grades last year
A. About 60%. B. Nearly 80%. C. 93%. D. 100%.
27. Grunert believes the after-school program brings a sense of ________.
A. safety B. humour C. curiosity D. belonging
C
Many people in America believe that “more is better”. College students often share this idea when they use laptops in class. Laptops do allow students to do more, like engage in online activities, and access information from the Internet. In fact, students who use laptops often take many more notes than those who write by hand. Moreover, when students take notes using laptops, they tend to take notes verbatim, writing down every word the teacher says. Obviously, they believe that it is advantageous to take more complete notes that are useful for later review.
However, research by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer shows a surprising result. Across the experiments, Mueller and Oppenheimer had students take notes in a classroom setting and then tested students on their memory for factual detail, their conceptual (概念的) understanding of the material, and their ability to generalize the information. Half of the students were instructed to take notes with a laptop, and the other half were instructed to write the notes out by hand. In each study, however, those who wrote out their notes by hand had a stronger conceptual understanding and were more successful in applying the material than those who took notes with their laptops.
What drives this unexpected finding Writing by hand is slower and forces students to listen carefully. They must think about what is important and then summarize the information in their own words. This process makes the brain work harder and helps them understand and remember better. On the other hand, typing on a laptop is so fast that many students write everything down without thinking deeply about the lecture. This type of note-taking does not help them learn well.
The research by Mueller and Oppenheimer serves as a reminder, however, that even when technology allows us to do more in less time, it does not always foster (促进) learning. Even though laptops let students record a lot of information quickly, deep learning happens when the brain must work to choose and summarize key ideas.
28. What does the underlined word “verbatim” in the first paragraph mean
A. Regularly. B. Nervously. C. Exactly as spoken. D. Creatively as expected.
29. What do Mueller and Oppenheimer find in their research
A. More complete notes are very useful for later review.
B. Students who write out their notes on paper learn more.
C. College teachers increasingly turn to technology in class.
D. Students who take notes with a laptop outperform the rest.
30. What does the author focus on in paragraph 3
A. Giving an example. B. Introducing a new topic.
C. Making a summary. D. Offering an explanation.
31. What should students do when it comes to learning according to the text
A. Use more brain power instead of technology.
B. Produce a written record as soon as possible.
C. Have a memory test shortly after each lesson.
D. Brush up on some language points repeatedly.
D
A recent study of Asian elephants in northern Cambodia shows a larger population than previously thought, raising hopes that the endangered species could slowly recover.
Researchers, with the help of the Fauna & Flora conservation group, collected samples (取样) from elephant waste in Cambodia’s northern plains and extracted (提取) DNA. From the DNA, they were able to figure out individual elephants, population size, and determine the sex of the animals and the overall genetic diversity of the population.
From their work, they discovered that there are around 51 elephants in the Prey Lang, Preah Roka, and Chhaeb Wildlife Sanctuaries, with greater genetic diversity — which helps animals stay healthy and survive longer, the researchers said — than in two other areas of the country where elephants live.
Overall, some 400 to 600 Asian elephants are believed to remain living in the wild in Cambodia. Researchers said the study’s findings underscore the potential (潜力) of the northern area studied to become a national stronghold for Asian elephants, contributing to Cambodia’s biodiversity conservation goals.
“Still, problems remain. Deforestation and habitat degradation continue to be a serious concern,” said Pablo Sinovas, director of Fauna & Flora in Cambodia. “This study provides a strong base to support conservation efforts and landscape management.”
The research was carried out in the 2020-21 dry season, but Sinovas said since elephants reproduce slowly, it is not thought that the population size would have changed significantly since then.
Researchers want to conduct similar studies elsewhere in Cambodia and in other countries, such as neighboring Vietnam where the Asian elephants face similar challenges with small populations. “We were very pleasantly surprised by the results of the project,” said Alex Ball, co-author of the study. “We now hope to apply this methodology across Cambodia and beyond, helping to build a clearer picture of Asian elephant numbers and guide efforts to stop the fall in the populations of these remarkable animals.”
32. What does the new study show about Asian elephants in northern Cambodia
A There is a slow growth in their populations.
B. They have a smaller population than expected.
C. Their habitats have doubled in the previous years.
D. Genetic diversity has little impact on their survival.
33. What can we infer about the northern area studied in Cambodia
A. It is home to a new species of elephants.
B. It has been protected as a tourist attraction.
C. It has been divided into small parts since 2020.
D. It provides a valuable habitat for Asian elephants.
34. What is Sinovas’ attitude toward the study
A. Uncaring. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.
35. What do the researchers plan to do next
A. Post the pictures of elephants they have studied.
B. Address other challenges facing Asian elephants.
C. Work with the local villagers to build elephant parks.
D. Support the recovery of Asian elephants in other areas.

David Chambers, a young volunteer firefighter, was about to finish his night shift(轮班). Everything seemed normal that night until a loud crash(碰撞)broke the quiet near his sister’s house. Without thinking twice, David ran toward the sound to see what had happened.
When arriving there, David saw two cars that had crashed into each other. One of the cars was a police patrol car. The scene looked very terrible, and there were some people standing around who were worried and scared. Thick smoke was rising from the cars, and the smell of oil filled the air. Amidst all this mess, David noticed that something was not right with the police car.
David quickly checked the car. He soon found a man trapped inside. That man was Officer Mark Kimsey. His body was stuck under the broken glass and twisted metal, and it was clear that he needed help right away. David was scared, his heart beating fast, but his mind stayed clear.
As he approached the car, David could feel the heat radiating(散发)from it. The situation looked very dangerous. The car was likely to catch fire anytime. Even though the heat was strong, David did not lose his focus. His training as a firefighter had prepared him well for such moments. He did not think about the danger that lay ahead. All he thought about was to save Officer Kimsey.
At the same time, a kind passerby joined David to help at once. Together, they planned to pull the trapped officer out through one of the broken windows. The window was the only way out because the main door was stuck. Every second counted as the air inside the car was filled with smoke. They had to act fast.

M: That’s very interesting. When will you be available for employment
W: In two weeks. I’ve promised my parents a ten-day visit. I can start work immediately after I’m back.
M: Great! I will call you back in a couple of days about our final decision.
W: OK. Thank you very much.

【原文】 M: Hello, everyone. Today’s guest is just 14 years old, and he is protecting birds around the world. His name is Dessi Sieburth. His love of birds started when he made his first bird feeder about six years ago. Now, he has his own group called “Protecting Our Birds”. He has been making western bluebird boxes for about four years. Dessi hangs them up in trees and takes them down every week and looks at them to see if the bluebirds are nesting. He does that every year during the summer. He chooses the bluebird because they nest in dead trees, but a lot of dead trees are being cut down. Dessi makes these boxes to take the place of the trees. He does research about birds, runs a website to teach people about birds and how to help them, and builds boxes for birds. Dessi has interviewed biologists, written a lot of articles on birds for local newspaper. Dessi also recently spent 10 days in Alaska with his family where he did research on golden eagles in Denali National Park. So now let’s welcome Dessi Sieburth!

A. safety B. humour C. curiosity D. belonging

【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. A

【答案】One possible version:
David reached inside the car and found Officer Kimsey’s hand. He tightly gripped it, trying to reassure the injured officer. “Hold on, sir. We’re going to get you out,” David said calmly, despite his racing heart. The passerby and David worked together, pulling with all their strength. Finally, with one last heave, they managed to free Officer Kimsey from the wreckage and dragged him to safety just as flames erupted from the car. They laid him on the ground. Soon sirens wailed in the distance as an ambulance and fire crew thundered onto the scene.
In the days that followed, the story of David’s rescue spread far and wide. Local news stations covered the event, praising David’s bravery. He received calls and messages of gratitude from people he had never met. The fire department awarded him a medal for his courageous actions. David was hailed as a hero, but he just shrugged it off. “I was doing my job,” he said. Meanwhile, Officer Kimsey recovered, and the two men became close friends. David returned to his normal life, continuing his work as a volunteer firefighter, always ready to help when trouble came.
