At just 20 years old, Nick Griggs from Northern Ireland has become one of Europe’s most promising athletes. The young runner has won two European Under-20 Championship gold medals and now aims to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Like many athletes, Griggs found inspiration from a sporting legend. “Watching Usain Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics changed everything,” he recalled. “I cheered loudly when he won the 100 meters in 9.63 seconds. That moment made me dream of becoming an Olympic medalist.”
Though starting as a sprinter (短跑运动员) and playing multiple sports including football Griggs discovered his true talent after joining Mid-Ulster Athletics Club at 14. His coach quickly noticed the teenager’s strong discipline (自制力), often arriving first for morning runs and staying late to improve his techniques. Changing to long-distance running proved successful — within two years, he won gold in the 3,000 meters at the 2021 European Under-20 Championships.
His success didn’t stop there. In 2023, he helped Ireland win gold at the European U20 Cross Country Championships and claimed individual bronze (铜牌). Then, just last November, Griggs set a new parkrun world record, completing the 5-km course at Victoria Park in Belfast in 13 minutes and 44 seconds beating the previous record by one second.
Behind these successes lie strict training routines. Griggs runs over 100 kilometers weekly, combining track workouts with hill training. “Some days I feel exhausted,” he admits, “but thinking of standing on the Olympic platform keeps me going.” His teammates describe him as “the most focused athlete in the gym”, always completing extra main exercises after regular sessions.
With the 2028 Olympics approaching, when he’ll be 23, experts believe Griggs’s steady progress could make him as a strong medal hope. “Every race teaches me something new,” says the determined runner. “My Olympic dream that started in 2012 continues to guide my training.”
4. What inspired Griggs’s Olympic dream
A. Advice from his coach. B. His parents’ being athletes.
C. Winning a school competition. D. A famous sprinter’s Olympic victory.

Many people believe that modern lifestyles have caused humans to sleep less than our ancestors did in earlier times. However, a review of 54 global sleep studies shows that people in small, traditional communities actually sleep fewer hours than those in modern industrial societies.
Common beliefs suggest that smart phones and other devices have created a “sleep-loss problem” in recent years. But many past studies asking people to report their sleep hours may be unreliable. Newer research using special devices to measure physical activity or brain waves finds no clear drop in sleep time over the last 50 years. A 2016 study of 168 research projects even showed no change in average sleep length since the 1970s.
Earlier studies mainly focused on industrial nations. Now, scientists can use wrist-worn activity trackers to study sleep in traditional societies. For example, hunter-gatherer groups in southern Africa average just 6.7 hours of nightly sleep.
Researchers compared sleep habits between industrial societies and small traditional communities. Their analysis covered 54 studies with direct sleep measurements from 866 healthy adults. They found that traditional groups slept for 6.4 hours on average per night, while industrial societies averaged 7.1 hours. They also found that people in non-industrialized societies were asleep for 74 percent of the time they were in bed, compared with 88 percent in industrial societies, a measure known as sleep efficiency (效率).
Samson explains that safer sleeping conditions in modern societies may explain these differences. “We have improved safety in our bedrooms,” he says. “People no longer need to fend off dangers like wild animals or conflicts at night.”
To improve sleep quality, experts suggest maintaining consistent bedtimes, avoiding screens before bed, and creating a dark, quiet bedroom environment. Additionally, reducing caffeine intake and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing can help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
8. Why might newer research on sleep hours be reliable
A. It relied on self-reports.
B. It used activity trackers.
C. It collected data from a large database.
D. It contained data from industrialized nations.
9. How does the author show the sleep hours of both societies in paragraph 4
A. By giving examples. B. By stating arguments.
C. By providing research results. D. By comparing different studies.
10. What does the underlined phrase “fend off” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Defend against. B. Give up. C. Look after. D. Come across.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To promote the use of activity trackers.
B. To present research findings against common beliefs.
C. To provide practical advice for improving sleep quality.
D. To criticize modern lifestyles for causing sleep disorders.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. B

Chocolate, a beloved treat worldwide, is often criticized for its high sugar content and environmental impact. However, Swiss researchers have pioneered a new method to produce healthier and more eco-friendly chocolate by making the best of the entire cocoa fruit instead of wasting most of it.
Traditionally, only cocoa seeds are used, leaving the fruit’s pulp (果肉) and outer shell as waste. The new approach extracts (提取) natural sweetness from the cocoa fruit itself, not requiring added sugar. Scientists found that the fruit's juice contains 14% sugar, which is concentrated into juice and mixed with pulp to form a gel (凝胶). This gel replaces sugar in chocolate production while boosting fiber content. The traditional system of cocoa production in Africa and South America is not environmentally friendly, as reported by BBC. The industry is also suffering from the high price of cocoa beans and the poverty of the cocoa farmers. Using the entire fruit could help deal with these two issues.
Developing the perfect recipe required wide-ranging testing. Trained experts evaluated various mixtures, balancing pulp quantities to avoid too thick or not sweet enough results. Beyond health benefits like regulating blood sugar and reducing fat intake, the method ensures a way that doesn’t use up or harm the earth’s resources. Cocoa farming in Africa and South America faces issues like destroying forests and farmer poverty. By processing the whole fruit locally, farmers gain extra income and job opportunities.
Major chocolate companies are adopting parts of this approach, though none have fully removed sugar. Roger Wehrli encouraged producers to accept the method, stating it could find new and better ways to improve the industry. By 2025, the European Union will no longer allow cocoa that harms forests, which may reshape global supply chains. Roger Wehrli also noted, “Using the whole fruit benefits both farmers and the planet — it’s economically and ecologically promising.”
12. What is the advantage of the new chocolate-making method
A. It increases sugar content. B. It lowers production costs.
C. It helps chocolate taste better. D. It improves health benefits.
13. What is special about the new method in paragraph 2
A. Adding melon extract for sweetness.
B. Processing cocoa fruits to form a gel.
C. Using the natural juice from cocoa seeds.
D. Reducing the amount of cocoa beans used.
14. What is a key benefit of processing the entire cocoa fruit locally
A. It raises the global price of cocoa beans.
B. It increases job opportunities for local workers.
C. It provides additional income and employment for farmers.
D. It increases the chance of forest destruction in cocoa-growing areas.
15. What does the last paragraph aim to show
A. The different attitudes of companies.
B. The problems with the chocolate industry.
C. The challenges of adopting new methods.
D. The advantages brought by the new approach.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D
