Hiking Trails Around the World
For adventure lovers, hiking offers a unique way to explore nature. Here are four world-famous trails for different skill levels:Inca Trail (Peru)
Stretching 43 km through the Andes Mountains, this 4-day trek leads to the ancient city of Machu Picchu. Suitable for experienced hikers due to high altitudes (up to 4,200m), it combines history and breathtaking views. Permits are required and limited to 500 people daily. Due to its popularity, permits must be booked at least 6 months in advance through official channels.Appalachian Trail (USA)
Covering 3,500 km across 14 states, this trail is one of the longest marked paths globally. While challenging for thru-hikers attempting the full 5-7 month journey, beginners can enjoy shorter sections. Spring and autumn are ideal seasons to avoid extreme weather. Volunteer-maintained shelters along the route provide basic accommodation for long-distance hikers.Tiger Leaping Gorge (China)
This 22 km trail in Yunnan Province winds through one of Asia’s deepest gorges along the Jinsha pleted in 2 days, it offers dramatic cliffs and views of snow-capped mountains. While the path has steep sections requiring enough fitness, it remains popular with both Chinese and international hikers. The highlight ‘28 Bends’ section rewards hikers with breathtaking views but requires 3 hours of continuous ascent. Local guesthouses along the route provide cultural immersion into Naxi minority traditions.Tour du Mont Blanc (Europe)
Circling Western Europe’s highest peak, this 170 km trail crosses France, Italy, and Switzerland in 10-12 days. Though physically demanding due to altitude changes, its clear signage and mountain huts make it accessible to intermediate hikers. Hikers should carry multiple currencies as mountain hut fees vary between ?15-50 per night in different countries.

Dr. Sarah tightly held the strap of her medical bag as the jeep bounced along the cracked road in northern Zambia. The dry-season wind carried red dust that covered everything — her notes, the temporary clinic’s windows, even the bandages. For 18 months, she’d served here with Doctors Without Borders, yet the sight of children lining up barefoot at dawn still pierced her heart.
Last month, tribal conflicts broke out near the clinic. Sarah was sewing up a farmer’s knife wound when shouting erupted outside. She pushed two nurses into the storage room just as a stone smashed through the window. Glass pieces cut her forearm, but she kept pressure on the farmer’s bleeding artery until the chaos became calm. That evening, she texted her parents: “Don’t worry — scratches fade. Hope doesn’t.”
The cruelest moments came quietly. Two weeks ago, a teenage mother had walked 12 miles carrying a feverish baby. Sarah diagnosed cerebral malaria, but the medicines had run out. She held the tiny body as if life slipped away, tears mixing with the mother’s silent sorrow. Yet, when a former patient — a boy she’d treated for snakebite — brought her a carved wooden bird, Sarah whispered, “This is why I stay.”
Rainy season transformed challenges. Floods blocked supply trucks, forcing Sarah to ration painkillers. She caught typhoid herself, vomiting between patient visits. One midnight, villagers carried in a girl with a broken leg from a fallen tree. Pale and shaking, Sarah set the bone by flashlight. “My pain isn’t important,” she told her assistant, watching raindrops trace paths on the girl’s relieved face.
Now, as Sarah sterilized (消毒) tools in boiling water, she noticed a desert rose blooming by the clinic’s rubble wall. Its pink petals mirrored the sunrise — a fragile yet persistent beauty, much like the lives she fought to protect.
24.How long had Dr. Sarah worked in Zambia when the tribal clashes happened
A.1 year B.1.5years C.2 years D.3 years
25.What caused Sarah’s injury during the tribal clashes
A.Direct hit by a thrown stone B.Flying glass from broken windows
C.Gunfire while seeking shelter D.Collapse of the storage room
26.Why did Sarah continue working while sick with typhoid
A.She wanted to avoid criticism. B.Medical resources were limited.
C.She gave priority to patients’ needs. D.No assistants could replace her.
27.What does the desert rose symbolize about Sarah’s work
A.Temporary achievements B.Dangerous environment
C.Consistent hope amid hardships D.Connection with nature
The increase of a protein called alpha-synclein in the brain has long been considered the fundamental cause of Parkinson’s This leads to the reduced production of dopamine (多巴胺), which helps control muscle movement. While some existing treatments aim to ease these symptoms by improving dopamine levels in the brain, their long-term effects are limited. So far, there are no approved treatments that can end or slow the progression of Parkinson’s.
In an effort to combat this, Gennaro Pagano and his colleagues at Roche, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, developed a new drug called prasinezumab to fight against the build-up of proteins in Parkinson’s disease. They tested the drug on 316 people with early-stage Parkinson’s disease. Among the participants,105 received a placebo, while 211 received the actual drug at either a low or high dose (剂量). At first, the results suggested that the drug had no meaningful impact, but the team later realized it might be effective among those with more severe Parkinson’s.
Additional analysis showed that low and high doses of the drug had a greater effect among the severe participants than seen in the initial pared with taking a placebo, it significantly reduced the rate at which participants’ physical symptoms worsened over the year-long period. Gennaro Pagano, the lead researcher, explains that this could be because people with more rapidly progressing Parkinson’s tend to have higher levels of alpha-synuclein in their brains and, therefore, may benefit more from a drug that potentially clears the protein.
However, Vinata Vedam-Mai at the University of Florida Health says one limitation of the research is that it doesn’t assess whether alpha-synuclein is being cleared from the brain. She would also like to see longer-term data to better determine the drug’s safety and effectiveness. However, the latest trial did not report any serious negative events.
28.What is prasinezumab intended for
A.Improving dopamine levels in the brain.
B.Controlling the progression of Parkinson’s.
C.Increasing the build-up of proteins in the brain.
D.Slowing the aging of Parkinson’s suffers’ muscles.
29.What did the initial outcome of the test show about the drug
A.It had no significant effects.
B.It was harmful to patients’ health.
C.It required higher doses to be effective.
D.It succeeded in treating early-stage Parkinson’s.
30.Who may benefit most from the new drug according to the study
A.Patients who had severe Parkinson’s.
B.Patients who took a placebo in the test.
C.Patients who received higher doses of drugs.
D.Patients who had lower alpha-synuclein levels in the brain.
31.What does Vedam-Mai think of the new research
A.It fails to achieve the expected outcome.
B.It proves the safety and effectiveness of the drug.
C.It was a major breakthrough in treating Parkinson’s.
D.It requires additional statistics to evaluate the drug.
A lot of manufactured glass today made from sand and sodium carbonate(碳酸钠) can be reused or melted down and recycled into new items, but it doesn’t break down in the environment and will sit in landfills for thousands of years. A team of Chinese scientists aimed to deal with this environmental concern by developing an eco-conscious alternative.
In a study published recently in the journal Science Advances, a team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Process Engineering describe how they engineered biodegradable glass made from amino acids(氨基酸). That glass would have a smaller impact on the environment and can break down in a few weeks or in several months.
In a test, glass beads(玻璃珠) made out of amino acids were placed under the skin of mice, and the breakdown of the bead and the skin healing process were observed for 30days. A diagram from the study shows how the mice’s bodies broke down the beads. In that month, the glass implant degraded beneath the skin, the wound site healed, and fur grew back. “Throughout the experimental period, no mice exhibited any pain-related behavior that may have been caused by the glass implantation, and none of them experienced obvious weight loss,” the researchers wrote in their paper.
Although amino acids do degrade over time in the environment, this biodegradable glass is not as durable as traditional glass, because amino acids can break down quickly in heat. In order to overcome this hurdle, the researchers chemically modified the amino acids using the heating-cooling procedure applied in glass manufacturing. This is when materials for the glass are heated to become soft and then rapidly cooled so as to make the glass tougher.
“It’s important to point out that this biodegradable glass is currently in the lab stage, and far from large-scale commercialization,” emphasized Yan Xuehai, a professor involved in the study, in a press release.
32.What is an advantage of the new glass
A.It takes less time to break down.
B.It can be recycled at a low cost.
C.It is produced without pollution.
D.It has a wide range of applications.
33.Why did researchers implant glass beads inside mice
A.To assess whether the glass is biologically harmless.
B.To investigate why amino acids are medically useful.
C.To explore how long it takes for the glass to degrade.
D.To observe if the glass can be melt down in mice’s stomach.
34.What does the underlined word “hurdle” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.The challenge of improving the heating-cooling procedure.
B.Environmental problems caused by traditional glass.
C.The difficulty of selecting materials for the glass.
D.The instability of amino acids.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Amin o Acids Make Glass Tougher
B.Amin o Acids Cast New Light on Science
C.Biodegradable Glass: Closer to Sustainability
D.Biodegradable Glass: Ready to Hit the Market
This summer, climate change continues to push Earth’s weather to extremes. 36 We invite some experts to discuss the science behind exercising in the heat, how to keep your body safe, and what to do if you suspect you or someone you’re with has heat exhaustion.
37 If you had a heavy meal like a cheeseburger, you’ll want to wait two to three hours before your hot outdoor exercise, since that fat and protein-rich meal will take even longer to move through the digestive process. Should you eat after that hot run No. You can hydrate right away, but wait until you’ve cooled off to eat. That’s because digesting food will delay getting your body back to its usual temperature.
Protect your skin — it’s the body’s cooling system. Your skin and related tissues are incredibly designed to move warm blood away from your core to keep your vital organs cool. Any damage to your skin or the underlying tissue prevents your body from being able to air condition itself. To protect your skin, start with sunscreen. 38 .
Wear materials that will help your body breathe. 39 Wear sweat-wicking athletic clothing that allows your skin to cool. Avoid materials like cotton that basically keep the heat close to your body.
Hydrate before, during and after exercise. Dehydration can really happen to you. 40 Besides, keep drinking while you’re working out.
A.Don’t eat right before you head out.
B.Try more heat-friendly forms of exercise.
C.The type of suitable clothing you wear can also help you stay cool.
D.But high outside temperatures in a dry climate can also be dangerous.
E.Is a daytime run or bike ride in hot summer weather OK for our bodies
F.And consider wearing sun-protective clothing that blocks the sun, and include a hat.
G.Make sure you are drinking water at least an hour before you head out to exercise.

Lin Fei was a diligent (勤勉的) student, always burying his head in books and earning top grades. His teachers admired his dedication and thirst for knowledge. When he graduated and entered a famous university, he was determined to continue his academic excellence and aimed to secure a scholarship.
At university, Lin Fei encountered a challenging course titled “Advanced Physics”, taught by the strict and respected Professor Wang. On the first day of class, Professor Wang warned the students about the course’s difficulty, causing many to drop the course immediately. Lin Fei, however, wasn’t scared; he believed in his ability to tackle any subject.
Professor Wang was known for his high expectations and his commitment to pushing students to achieve their best. He often said in class, “You alone must set your own standard of excellence,” a sentence that puzzled Lin Fei, as he had always found school to be easy.
The first test arrived, and Lin Fei, overconfident in his abilities, did not prepare as diligently as he should have. He even spent the night before the test watching a movie with friends. The next day, he was shocked to receive a 75. C+, on his test paper. Physics was his strongest subject, and he had never received such a low grade before. He approached Professor Wang, who listened to his arguments and explained that grades were a reflection of effort and understanding.
Realizing that his scholarship was now in jeopardy (处于危险境地), Lin Fei decided to turn things around. He understood that this was his last chance to improve his course grade. He began to study with a newfound determination, spending hours each day understanding the complex concepts that had previously eluded (把……难倒) him. He attended every lecture, completed all assignments diligently, and spent additional hours in the library, going over textbooks and solving problems. As the next test approached, Lin Fei felt very calm. He knew he had tried his best.

根据第二段中“She pushed two nurses into the storage room just as a stone smashed through the window. Glass pieces cut her forearm, but she kept pressure on the farmer’s bleeding artery until the chaos became calm. (她赶紧把两名护士推进了储物间,就在这时,一块石头砸破了窗户。玻璃碎片划伤了她的前臂,但她一直按压着农民正在流血的动脉,直到骚乱平息下来)”可知,是窗户破碎后飞溅的玻璃导致Sarah受伤。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段“Rainy season transformed challenges.
根据最后一段中“Its pink petals mirrored the sunrise—a fragile yet persistent beauty, much like the lives she fought to protect. (它粉红色的花瓣映照着日出——一种脆弱却又持久的美,就像她拼命保护的生命一样)”可知,沙漠玫瑰象征着Sarah在困境中始终坚守的希望。故选C。

37.根据后文“If you had a heavy meal like a cheeseburger, you’ll want to wait two to three hours before your hot outdoor exercise, since that fat and protein-rich meal will take even longer to move through the digestive process. Should you eat after that hot run No. You can hydrate right away, but wait until you’ve cooled off to eat. That’s because digesting food will delay getting your body back to its usual temperature.(如果你吃了一顿像芝士汉堡这样的大餐,你会想等两到三个小时再进行户外运动,因为富含脂肪和蛋白质的大餐需要更长的时间才能通过消化过程。热跑之后你应该吃东西吗?不。你可以马上补充水分,但要等到身体冷却后再吃。这是因为消化食物会延迟你的身体恢复正常体温)”可知,本段的建议是出门前不要吃太多东西。故A选项“出门前不要吃东西”符合语境,故选A。
38.根据本段主旨句“Protect your skin — it’s the body’s cooling system.(保护你的皮肤——这是身体的冷却系统)”可知,本段主要建议保护皮肤。

66.Dear fellow students,
Noticing a serious phenomenon that some high school seniors burdened with school work spare little time for regular physical exercise, I’d like to appeal to you to take proper exercise.
Doing sports is of great significance, which enables us to keep in shape and get refreshed after a long time of work. Therefore, I suggest we fit exercise into our busy schedule, making it part of our daily routine. Put down our books to stretch our arms from time to time and do some jogging and jumping every day.
It is high time that we should arouse our awareness of proper exercise.

67.One possible version:
The day after the test, he was excited to find that he had earned an A. He rushed to Professor Wang’s office, eager to share the news. Professor Wang, who seemed to be expecting him, said, “If I had given you the grade you expected initially, you wouldn’t have worked as hard as you did.” Lin Fei was speechless, realizing the wisdom behind Professor Wang’s approach. This experience taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of perseverance and the role of challenges in promoting growth.
Encouraged by this achievement, Lin Fei redoubled his efforts in other courses as well. He became more active in class discussions, often sharing his insights and seeking clarification on challenging topics. His classmates, too, noticed the change and began to approach him for help with their studies. Lin Fei, now a role model of academic excellence, realized that setting one’s own standard of excellence meant always trying to do better than before, regardless of past accomplishments. As the term drew to a close, he was happily awarded the scholarship he had always dreamed of.
