M:Is it true that fast food restaurants are very popular in the USA
W:Yes, especially in big cities.
M:Why
W:Because the food is good, the service is fast and the prices are low.
M:Oh, that's good.Then which restaurant is most well-known
W:McDonald's. By 1982, there were 7,063 McDonald's in the world, and about 1,283 of them were in other countries, such as Japan, England and AustraliA.
M:I see. How about the service and the food
W:Well, the employees there are helpful and polite, and the tables and floors are very clean. Most important, people can get the same food at any McDonald's in any state of the country. The food, of course, is quite good. French fries, the hamburgers, the sandwiches—are all specially prepared. Workers buy their lunches there because they taste better than their lunches from home.
M:How about the owner of McDonald's
W:It was first owned by two brothers,Richard and Maurice McDonald. Then, in 1960, Ray Kroc, a 56-year-old salesman, bought the name and most of their restaurants for $ 2.7 million.
(Text 7)
W:What are you doing,Tom
M:I'm writing to my mother.

W:No,I don't think I will work at the boy's camp where I worked last summer. Camp jobs don't pay much.
M:I think I can find a job at the Hollywood Hotel. A friend of mine was a waiter last summer. The pay wasn't good, but the tips were.
W:My sister worked there last summer, making beds and cleaning bathrooms. She didn't like it but she earned a lot of money.
M:That sounds really good.
W:Yes. And I want a job outside. After sitting in college classes all winter, I'd like a job in the open air.

(Text 10)
Few people would even think of beginning a new job at the age of 76, but one of America's most famous artists did just that. Anna Mary Robertson, better known as “Grandma Moses”, turned to painting because she was too old to work on her farm.
Grandma Moses painted carefully and her works were nice. She first painted only to enjoy herself, and then began to sell her works for a little money. In 1939,a collector,Louis Caldor happened to see several of Grandma Moses' works hanging in a shop. He liked them, bought them at once, and set out to look for more. Caldor held a show to introduce the works of Grandma Moses to other artists.
Grandma Moses died on December 13th, 1961, at the age of 101. She was world-famous.

Ivet Curbelo was born and raised in Sant Clara, a small Cuban (古巴的) city of about half a million people. Later, she moved to Havana to continue her studies and played in popular Cuban bands.
A special musical journey has taken Curbelo onto Chinese stages offering Chinese audiences nationwide a chance to enjoy her music. The opportunity presented itself with the opening of the first Argentine restaurant in Shanghai. The owners were looking to set their customers' dining experience to a dynamic (充满活力的) music and traveled to Cuba in search of a band that would fit the bill. “I hesitated in the beginning because I didn't think there was room for Latino (拉美) culture in a country with so much traditional culture in China,” Curbelo admitted, quickly adding, “but the proposal to be a violinist in a traditional Cuban group seemed like a fantastic opportunity to get to know this beautiful country. So I came to China at last.”
This musical journey took her all across China—touring, recording and even producing music for famous bands. Among her most unforgettable moments, Curbelo listed the opening of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, where she had the opportunity to share the stage with the famous Italian musician Andrea Bocelli and most of the foreign artists based in Shanghai.
A musician's week is never normal. In addition to a busy schedule, each day differs from the last. There are weeks with meetings during the day and a show that same night. And there are those times when demand is low, giving her more time to record or visit the shows of fellow musicians.
Curbelo now not only sings in her native Spanish, but also in other languages, including standard Chinese. “I sing in several languages because I have projects of different styles; singing in Chinese is always the most difficult but it brings me much satisfaction. Besides, I have a better understanding of Chinese traditional culture,” Curbelo said.

Many people dream of going into space, but until recently only professional astronauts had that privilege. However, that all changed with successful first missions for several space tourism companies.
First off the runway, in early July,2021, was Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic company. Its spaceship, called VSS Unity, took four passengers and two pilots on a trip to the edge of space, where they experienced weightlessness and saw the Earth from above.
VSS Unity has a fully reusable design—it is carried to a height of 9.5 miles under a larger “mothership” plane called Eve. It is then released before firing its own rockets to reach its maximum height of 53 miles. As it begins to fall, its wings turn around so that it floats down slowly like a shuttlecock (羽毛球) before levelling out and flying back to land like a normal aeroplane. Virgin Galactic hopes to begin regular flights in 2023.
Less than two weeks later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' New Shepard rocket made its first flight, launching a space capsule with four passengers to an altitude of 66 miles. Among those on board were Bezos himself and 82-year-old Wally Funk, a pioneering female pilot who trained for NASA's Mercury programme in the early 1960s but had waited 60 years for her chance to go into space. Funk became the oldest person to fly in space but only held that record until October, when 90-year-old actor William Shatner flew on the second New Shepard launch. Shatner played Captain Kirk in the Star Trek TV series and films.
In September, the Inspiration 4 mission carried four ordinary people into orbit around Earth. The launch was the first private passenger flight for Elon Musk's SpaceX company, using a Dragon spacecraft that is also used for NASA missions. Designed to raise awareness and funds for St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, US, the mission was paid for by billionaire Jared Isaacman. He was joined on the three-day flight by medical researcher Hayley Arceneaux, competition winner Dr Sian Proctor and hospital supporter Chris Sembroski.

It was a quiet early afternoon in the library, and we librarians were enjoying a chat at the library desk. Suddenly, a regular reader, who had been reading a magazine, marched up to us, gave us an annoyed “Shush (嘘)!” and went back to her seat.
Shocked into silence, we tried not to laugh. How strange for a group of librarians to be shushed by a reader! Shouldn't it be the other way around
Well, it seems hard to explain. If you're a baby boomer (婴儿潮出生的人) like me, you probably remember libraries as places of adults' silent reading. These days, however, libraries are more like busy community centers, where being noisy to some degree is the new normal, especially when kids are taking part.
I am a loud librarian. My voice is naturally on the louder side. The hundreds of programs I led as a children's librarian were filled with singing, dancing, movement exercises and cheerful readings of books with crowds of children and their caregivers. No shushing allowed!
Growing knowledge about the importance of kids and teens learning through hands-on experiences has since caused a sea change in how public libraries connect with young readers. These types of programs like board games, poetry reading and story times certainly aren't designed to be silent.
But it's a balancing act. Not all readers—or librarians—like the idea of a noisy library. It's clear to me now that on the day my colleagues and I were shushed by a reader, we should have been using our “library voices” as we talked. Still, it's unlikely that libraries will ever return to the days when they were places of silence. There's just too much fun and learning happening. I heartily agree with my friend Rachel Payne, an early-childhood service educator at the Brooklyn Public Library, who told me, “When I visit a library and it is quiet, I always feel a bit sad. A library where conversations are happening and tables are full is a very good thing!”

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Our Garfield became a mostly indoor cat. He used to wander outside but we discovered he had a terrible sense of direction, so now he has to stay inside. He does not enjoy being on the inside looking out, but it's safer for him so that's how it has to be.
When Garfield isn't sleeping, he's either sitting on a windowsill (窗台) or sitting with his wet nose pressed against our glass door overlooking the deck (木质平台), like a prisoner behind bars. As he ages, he earns back his outside rights an hour per day because he shows us that he will stay close to the back deck.
When we let him out last week, a thunderstorm arose out of nowhere. By the time we heard the crack of lightning and remembered Garfield was outside, we opened the door to see nothing but strong wind and heavy rain. My daughter Janette put on her rubber boots and raincoat to check around the house, but Garfield was nowhere to be found. The thunderstorm obviously had scared him into a run in the wrong direction. Who knew where he would end up
It took me forever to fall asleep that night. I prayed (祈祷) someone would protect him and help him find his way home. As I continued praying, I realized that in my daily prayers for my family, I rarely included Garfield. Now that he was gone, maybe forever, I realized what an important part of our family he was. I prayed for his safe return.
My husband Peter was the first one up at 6:00 A. m. He checked the doorstep, but no Garfield was in sight. I saw my neighbor Heidi taking her dog out for a walk, and I asked her to please keep her eyes open for our cat. Janette and her three brothers all walked around the house that day looking like they had lost their best friend. Peter decided to look for Garfield around the neighborhood.

参考范文:
Peter and I drove around to search the neighborhood. We spotted a few cats but none were our gorgeous orange cat with his white chest and white face. I put up my lost-cat notice around the neighborhood, with a photo of my beautiful cat and our phone number. After another restless night and another empty doorstep in the morning, I thought sadly, “He's not an outdoor cat. He could not possibly survive two nights out there. We were never going to see him again.”
I was saying to myself “Never say never” when I heard something scratching the door at 10:00 p.m. I opened the door and found Garfield was right there! With excitement, I picked him up and shouted to the living room: “He is back! Garfield is back!” All of my family gathered around Garfield and me, greeting and comforting him. We all took turns holding him and fussing over him as the long-lost friend that he was. Garfield's still an indoor cat. He's such an important part of our family that we can't afford to lose him again.
