The art of writing by hand has a honorable history. From Emily Dickinson’s elegant cursive, to Stephen King’s neat block lettering, many of the most famous and important works of literature have been written by hand. Studies have shown that writing by hand can have enormous benefits in terms of memory, brain development, and even the quality of the writing itself.
Some say that handwriting has become a dying art since the arrival of the typewriter in the mid 1880s, even more so due to computers. However, despite the sense that writing on paper is out of date, it actually has a number of very important benefits.
Writing by hand is not only important for language processing and memory, it is also important for cognitive (认知的) development. In learning to write by hand, the human brain must integrate sensation, movement control, and thinking. For whatever reason, it does not do so when learning to type.
A 2021 study by the University of Tokyo shows that writing on paper could help students recall material better than typing on a keyboard. Likewise, a 2014 study from the Association for Psychological Science shows that taking notes on a laptop as opposed to writing them longhand (普通书写), leads to shallower processing of the material learned. This is because when using a laptop, students will often type out lectures word by word, without processing information and rewording it in their own language.
Writing by hand also helps students do better on exams. A study led by Dr. Virginia Berninger, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, suggests that children wrote longer and more complex essays when they were writing by hand, as opposed to using a keyboard.
So the next time you sit down to write an email to a loved one, consider the possibility that it might be better for your brain if you wrote a handwritten letter instead.
8. Why does the author mention Emily Dickinson and Stephen King
A. To compare different writing forms. B. To highlight the the history of writing.
C. To illustrate the advantages of writing. D. To introduce the famous writing works.
9. What has been shown to have significant cognitive benefits
A. Writing on paper. B. Tying on a laptop.
C. Using a typewriter. D. Learning literature works.
10. What can you learn about writing and typing from Paragraph 4
A. Taking notes on laptops is favored by students.
B. There is no distinct difference in processing information.
C. Writing by hand helps students remember materials better.
D. Taking notes on laptops contributes to deeper processing of the material.
11. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a benefit of writing on paper
A. Improving memory. B. Quickening the writing speed.
C. Enhancing academic performance. D. Boosting information process ability.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. B

It’s a dog, it’s a fox, it’s a wolf… it’s a robot A new dog-like robot has entered the field. Created to help keep airplanes and animals safe by imitating a predator (捕食者), the Aurora, as it is known, will soon begin its important work at the Fairbanks airport in Alaska.
According to The Verge, though not often discussed, the issue of airplane-animal collisions (碰撞) at airports is not trivial. In 2023, 92 animal collisions were reported to the FAA at airports near Alaska. And that’s just Alaska.
Trying to relieve this problem without harming wildlife requires some creative thinking. And that is where Aurora comes in. Aurora can climb rocks and stairs, and even do a little dance.
Silly as it may seem, these movements are meant to imitate the movements of predators such as foxes and wolves. Aurora can even be disguised as either a fox or a wolf, which hopefully will cause a fear response in the birds and other wildlife.
And yet, despite the fact that Aurora costs about $70,000, according to Ryan Marlow, Aurora’s robot handler, the robot is still preferable to a dog: “A border Collie (牧羊犬) requires food, training, warmth, and doesn’t collect data for us,” he told Anchorage Daily News.
There is something about Aurora that arouses a sense of fun. Maybe it is the dancing, or just the very concept of a robot chasing birds around. Whatever the case, here’s hoping that Aurora can make airports just a bit more safe for people and animals alike.
12. What can we learn from the example about collisions in Paragraph 2
A. The harm of airplane-animal collisions are not worth considering.
B. The frequency of collision between animals and airplanes is high.
C. The issue of airplane-animal collisions only happens in some cities.
D. The discussion about the airplane-animal collisions is common.
13. What are these movements made by Aurora used for
A. Scaring away the wildlife in the airport.
B. Making the wildlife more entertaining.
C. Responding to the actions of wildlife.
D. Interacting with the fierce predator.
14. What is the disadvantage of a real dog compared to Aurora
A. Its unaffordable price. B. Its demand for care.
C. Its inaccurate data. D. Its low efficiency.
15. What is the best title for this passage
A. Airplane-animal Collisions Draws Widespread Attention
B. The Creative Robot Makes Flight Travel Safer for People
C. An Innovative Robot Keeps Airfields Clear of Wildlife
D. The Issue in Many Airports Needs Urgent Response

School Picnic Day
My mom often tells me stories. One of her stories is about the school picnic. At that time, schools didn’t have a track and field day like we have now. Instead, the biggest day for them was the School Picnic Day.
The School Picnic Day was usually held on the last day of school in June. On that day, kids played simple games. No one cared who won and who lost. The true winners were the children themselves bathed in the joyous atmosphere of friendship and mutual respect.
Soon, before anyone knew it, the School Picnic Day would reach its climax with a grand feast at lunch time. Parents always packed picnic baskets for the kids. They filled them with as many good foods as they could afford. Lunchtime was a delightful occasion with children early sharing their baskets and exchanging treats with one another.
There was one family that was very poor. They had no picnic lunch that year. When my mom noticed this from a distance, she quickly tried to figure out how to help them. She knew they would be embarrassed if she gave them something from her own lunch basket.
Just then, the teacher announced there was going to be one final race before lunch. It would be the sack race, in which two people get inside a sack and hop as fast as they can to the finish line. The winner would receive a special lunch basket prepared by the teachers.
My mom wanted to enter this race. She waited until she saw Mary, the oldest sister of the family, get up. She asked Mary if she could be her partner, and Mary agreed. My mom had never been good at races, but as she put her legs into that sack with Mary, she told herself, “You can do it. You have to win!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Later, Mary came and thanked my mom for being her partner.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The teacher yelled, “Ready. Set. Go!” and the race was on. The trick with the sack race lies in the physical ability to maintain balance to keep from falling down. If you can keep standing, hopping and moving forward, you have a good chance to win. Most kids usually fall down right away, but this time my mom hopped in time with Mary. They pulled out in front and never looked back. They performed in perfect harmony as if they had rehearsed the race a thousand times. Their classmates were cheering. As they crossed the finish line, the crowds erupted into thunderous applause, shouting words of admiration.
Later, Mary came and thanked my mom for being her partner. Her eyes sparkled with excitement and joy. She said that her family really enjoyed the special picnic lunch. Then, in a gesture of profound appreciation, Mary handed my mom a sandwich. The two girls sat together in the warm sun, eating the last two sandwiches merrily. According to Mom, it was the best school picnic in the whole world. The picnic stood out as the most memorable and meaningful experience, symbolizing the power of kindness and bonds between friends.2023—2024学年普通高中高二(下)期末教学质量检测

D
