Aron Ralston was a pretty normal guy, but he always had an extremely adventurous desire to travel and see the world. During his childhood, his family moved to Denver, Colorado, a place offering many opportunities to climb mountains, explore, and eventually become the adventurer he’d always wanted to be. Back in 2003, Ralston was climbing in the remote, mountainous area of Southwestern Utah, when the unthinkable happened: Aron got stuck in a crevice (裂缝) in the rocks and pinned by a big stone that weighed over 360 kilograms. The weight of the rock crushed his arm, and he was pinned by it. Aron took photos of his bad situation (which was going to get a lot worse), hoping rescue teams (救援队) would know where he was and came to remove the rock so that he could get out and home safe.
But rescuers never came. Aron waited for them for days till he lost his hope. He knew he had to do something. He was 18 meters above the floor of the valley where he was pinned in, and he had a pocketknife. He made what must have been one of the most difficult decisions of his life: to cut his own arm in order to survive. Aron cut the lower part of his arm off, having to wrench (扭动) his forearm against the big stone to break the bones, and then got himself down to the bottom of the valley, where he would begin to walk and search for help. Luckily, help arrived in the form of a helicopter (直升机) that spotted him, covered in blood. Aron had tied off the wound to keep himself from bleeding to death pretty successfully and would eventually make it out alive.
Ralston went on to become an inspiring speaker and continued to travel and climb mountains—he didn’t let an incident that forced him to cut his own arm off, stop him from doing what he really loved.

A.He waited for the rescue to come.
B.He cut the stone using his pocketknife.
C.He moved off the stone using all his might.

27.What helped Aron Ralston survive

In a groundbreaking announcement, Deepseek, a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), has revealed its latest innovation: an advanced AI system named “DeepMind 2.0.” This new technology is designed to understand and respond to human emotions with unprecedented accuracy, marking a significant leap forward in the field of emotional AI. According to Deepseek’s CEO, Dr. Emily Zhang, the system uses a combination of machine learning, natural language processing, and advanced algorithms to analyze facial expressions, voice tones, and even subtle body language cues.
The potential applications of DeepMind 2.0 are vast. In healthcare, the system has already been tested in several hospitals, where it assists doctors in identifying patients’ emotional states, such as anxiety or depression, and provides tailored recommendations for care. In education, the technology could help teachers better understand students’ emotional needs, creating a more supportive learning environment. Additionally, in customer service, DeepMind 2.0 could enable more empathetic and effective interactions between businesses and their clients.
However, the announcement has sparked a heated debate among experts. While many praise the potential benefits of the technology, others have raised serious concerns. Professor David Lee, a leading expert in technology ethics, warns that the ability to analyze and respond to emotions could be misused. “This technology could lead to privacy violations (侵犯), emotional manipulation, or even exploitation,” he said. “For example, companies might use it to influence consumer behavior in unethical (不道德的) ways, or governments could use it to monitor citizens’ emotions without their consent.”
Despite these concerns, Deepseek remains optimistic about the future of DeepMind 2.0. The company has emphasized its commitment to ethical AI development, including strict data privacy measures and transparency in how the technology is used. Dr. Zhang stated, “We believe that the benefits of this technology—improving mental health, enhancing education, and fostering better human connections—far outweigh the risks.”
Deepseek plans to launch DeepMind 2.0 globally by the end of this year, with initial rollouts in healthcare and education sectors. The company is also working with policymakers and ethicists to establish guidelines for the responsible use of emotional AI.
28.What is the primary function of DeepMind 2.0
A.To develop new algorithms for data analysis.
B.To analyze and respond to human emotions accurately.
C.To improve the speed of internet connections.
D.To replace human workers in various industries.
29.According to Dr. Emily Zhang, what makes DeepMind 2.0 unique
A.It can operate without any human intervention.
B.It focuses simply on customer service applications.
C.It can solve complex mathematical problems.
D.It uses advanced algorithms to analyze emotions.
30.What is one major concern raised by Professor David Lee
A.It could cause privacy violations or emotional manipulation.
B.The technology might be too expensive for widespread use.
C.It may not be effective in educational settings.
D.It could cause job losses in the technology sector.
31.What steps has Deepseek taken to address ethical concerns
A.It has stopped the development of DeepMind 2.0.
B.It has decided to limit the use of the technology to healthcare.
C.It has adopted strict data privacy measures and transparency.
D.It has partnered with companies to increase profits.
The Paris Olympics are getting ready to defend against cyberattacks (网络攻击), with the threat possibly coming from criminals.
“We are worried about everything from the broadcasters to the sponsors, transport infrastructures (基础设施) and support, and competitions. Any kind of attack is on the table,” said John Hultquist, an analyst at Mandiant Consulting, a US cybersecurity consultancy firm.
His concern is reasonable, as cyberattacks are surprisingly common during the Olympic Games. The first cyberattack on the Olympics was in Montreal in 1976. Many events had to be postponed or moved because of the 48-hour electrical disruption. Tokyo Olympics in 2021 reported 450 million cyberattacks — which doubled the number experienced during the 2012 London Olympics.
However, it’s important to note that the Paris Olympics will make the first attempt to take heavy advantage of artificial intelligence (AI) in its operation. “AI will have a huge impact on us,” a senior French military official stated. “It will allow us to rearrange data faster and extract key events, which will help fight back.” However, he also warned that there are many enemies and the resources may not be enough to deal with all possible attacks.
These attacks could target gyms, local transportation such as trains and subways, Paris’ electricity and water systems, phone networks, and media reporting of the Games. The highest risk involves disruption of infrastructures and broadcasts. Furthermore, attacks could extend beyond the Games with the spread of fake videos about the events. Deepfake videos could be used to distract from the reality of particular events.
Hultquist also warned that competition results could be tampered (篡改) with, highlighting the potential for interference (干扰) with cameras, timekeeping devices, and scoreboards. Talking about the importance of data security, he recommended keeping systems isolated (隔离的) and using paper backups for scores to ensure their security.
32.What does the underlined phrase “on the table” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Ready. B.Harmful. C.Possible. D.Preventable.
33.Why are many Olympics in the history mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To give the evidence of John’s worry. B.To specify the figures of the cyberattacks.
C.To highlight the sharp increase in cyberattacks. D.To illustrate the bad effect caused by the disruption.
34.What is the senior French military official’s attitude toward the use of AI in the Paris Olympics
A.Curious but opposed. B.Positive and optimistic.
C.Supportive but cautious. D.Uninterested and doubtful.
35.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about
A.The high risks and their influences.
B.Safety concerns of the event and the solutions.
C.The impact of deepfake videos and related measures.
D.The potential interference and the importance of security.
Whether you’re looking to lose a few pounds, spend more time at the gym or learn a language, turning bad habits into good ones is all about self-control. Some of us have more than others. And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. 36
Michael Inzlicht is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and a self-control researcher. He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. 37 When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. Inzlicht says that these types of individuals generally have what’s called “trait self-control” meaning it’s an aspect of their personality.
When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. 38 A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come. 39
40 Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.
A.However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it.
B.Another tip for success, says Inzlicht, is making gradual steps.
C.Even a small amount of money can encourage people to work out.
D.They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort.
E.Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now.
F.Don’t be afraid of frustration, since it is necessary for your improvement.
G.Actually, self-control improvement can bring about benefits to all individuals.

I always love going to school as I can meet my friends and learn from my teachers. Everyone has an unforgettable moment in their school life and mine was in junior middle school.
That day started as usual. I woke up, got ready and went to school, where I first met my friends and then we were required to gather for the daily get-together. After that, we went to our respective classes. I went to my classroom as well and settled down as usual, greeting my classmates and waiting for the teacher to arrive.
It was a chemistry class and the teacher asked us to go to the laboratory to conduct a long-anticipated experiment. I took my stuff and was ready to leave the classroom when I felt sharp pain in my stomach. I sat down for a while, with hands rubbing my stomach. I was waiting for the pain to go off by itself. However, it was in vain. The pain still remained. Unfortunately, all of my friends had gone except the class monitor, the one I had never thought to make friends with.
But anyway, I called him and informed him of my condition, asking him to help me contact my parents. Noticing my trembling voice and begging eyesight, he agreed instantly and went to contact my parents without any hesitation.
On his departure, I realized that things were getting worse. Beads of sweat dropping off my paleface, I had to lean against the desk to ease the severe pain without realizing I suddenly vomited (呕吐). Everything around me was in a total mess, including myself. At that point, I thought my life was over and was scared of all the mean words to be said by my classmates and schoolmates. At that embarrassing moment, the class monitor came back. Obviously, he knew my dilemma. I was frozen with pain on the spot, maybe awkwardness, to be accurate.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

W: Sounds great! How will this new tool work
M: Well, it uses a computer chip and special glasses. We start by putting the chip into the blind person’s eye. The chip is very, very small, of course. And the glasses have a very small video camera inside.
W: So, how do the computer chip and glasses work together
M: Well, a blind person puts on the glasses and looks at something, for example, this pen. Then the video camera in the glasses takes a picture of the pen. The camera then sends the picture to the computer chip in the person’s eye.
W: And then the person can see the pen!
M: Exactly! This whole process happens very quickly, of course.
W: Wow! Now, using this tool, will a blind person be able to see as well as a normal person
M: No, they won’t have perfect vision, but they will be able to see many things. This tool is still new, but for many of the people in our study, it has changed their lives.

根据第一段“The Paris Olympics are getting ready to defend against cyberattacks (网络攻击), with the threat possibly coming from criminals.(巴黎奥运会正准备防范网络攻击,威胁可能来自犯罪分子)”以及划线词上文“We are worried about everything from the broadcasters to the sponsors, transport infrastructures (基础设施) and support, and competitions.(我们对转播商、赞助商、交通基础设施和支持以及比赛等一切都感到担忧)”以及“Any kind of attack is”可知,上文提到他们对一切网络攻击都感到担忧,由此说明任何形式的网络攻击都是可能的。

36.前文“And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. (研究表明,自控能力强的人往往更快乐。但问题是,我们通常只在未来得到奖励)”指出自控能力强可以带来快乐,但这种快乐在未来才能得到,因此E项“Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now. (因此,我们不断地权衡是等待还是现在就拥有它)”符合语境,表明我们会纠结于是自控以得到未来的快乐,还是不自控现在就获得快乐,是前文矛盾的结果,承接前文。故选E。
37.前文“He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practice it. (他说,具有讽刺意味的是,那些真正擅长自我控制的人并不需要练习自我控制)”指出擅长自控的人不需要练习自控,后文“When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. (当你喜欢并渴望一些对你更好的事情时,比如学习、努力工作或锻炼,你不必考虑去做)”用具体的例子说明这种自控可以自然发生,因此D项“They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort. (他们可以毫不费力地一直保持好习惯)”符合语境,说明这样的人可以轻松保持好习惯,是对前文的解释,后文是对其例证,选项中的They指代前文的those who are really good at it。故选D。
38.前文“When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. (说到提高自我控制能力,Inzlicht说,很难改变你与生俱来的性格)”指出提高自控力很困难,后文“A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behavior you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. (大量的研究表明,你可以提高你想要改变的特定行为或你想要养成的习惯的自制力)”说明特定行为或习惯的自控力是可以提升的,因此A项“However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it. (然而,这并不意味着你对此无能为力)”符合语境,指出提高自控力也是有办法的,和前文构成转折,引出后文,其中的this指代前一句话。故选A。
39.前文“For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come. (例如,Inzlicht说,当我们因为改变生活而得到报酬时,我们更有可能做出改变。有些健身房会向你收取一定数额的一年会员费,然后每次你来的时候都会返还你几美分)”指出报酬可以推动人做出改变,并举出健身房返还一小部分费用的例子,因此C项“Even a small amount of money can encourage people to work out. (即使是少量的钱也能鼓励人们去锻炼)”符合语境,说明被返还的费用可以让人坚持锻炼,承接前文。故选C。
40.后文“Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change — not to mention unsustainable.

However, he considerately helped me to go to the toilet. He then advised me to wash up in the toilet while waiting for my parents’ arrival. Meanwhile, he even tried to comfort me and promised he would clean the classroom so that there was no need for me to feel embarrassed. Tears were welling up in my eyes, dripping down into my mouth and tasting like a mixture of embarrassment and gratitude. Shortly after that, my parents arrived. Having known everything from the class monitor, they took me to the hospital immediately. It turned out that I had food poisoning.
After fully recovering from the food poisoning, I returned to school. Instead of trying to cover everything up, I shared what had happened to me publicly in front of my classmates and teachers, extending my parents’ and my own heartfelt gratitude not only for the class monitor’s generous assistance but also for his kind consideration. Without his timely help, I wouldn’t have recovered in such a short time. I now clearly know that he is the one that I should make friends with. After all, a friend in need is a friend indeed.
