Last Friday, Britain’s Prince William announced the winners of this year’s Earthshot Prize. The prize is meant to encourage new ideas and rapid action to help protect the planet. Below are parts of this year’s prize-winning projects in each category.
Protect and Restore Nature
Kheyti won the prize for protecting and restoring nature with its “Greenhouse-in-a-box” idea. Kheyti is already working with 1, 000 farmers across India, which is one of the most climate-affected countries in the world. The company says the greenhouses allow farmers to use 90% less water and produce seven times as much food. Kheyti hopes to get its greenhouses to 50,000 farmers by 2027.
Clean Our Air
Charlot Magayi won the prize for cleaning the air. Ms. Magayi developed a stove (炉子) that uses a fuel that’s cheaper and pollutes far less than charcoal stoves. Currently, over 200,000 of her Clean Stoves are being used in Kenya.
Build a Waste-Free World
A London-based company called Notpla(for “Not Plastic”)won the prize for building a waste-free world. They’ve created a plastic substitute(替代品)from plants found in the ocean. Unlike most plastic, their products break down naturally with no microplastics. Notpla believes their products can help end the plastic pollution that’s filling landfills and polluting oceans.
Fix Our Climate
The Earthshot Prize for working toward fixing our climate went to a company called 44.01 from Oman. 44.01 has come up with a way to turn polluting carbon dioxide(CO2)into a rock called peridotite. Once the CO2 has been turned into rock, it can no longer be released into the atmosphere again. The method that 44.01 uses is fast, cheap and permanent.
1. What is the aim of the Earthshot Prize
A. To offer practical advice on global warming.
B. To find solutions to the environmental problems.
C. To develop a strategic partnership with all parties.
D. To encourage literary creations of the British people.
2. Where are Kheyti’s greenhouses widely used
A. In India. B. In Kenya. C. In the UK. D. In Oman.
3. What do Charlot Magayi and 44.01 have in common
A. They want to build a waste-free world.
B. Their projects are directly good for farmers.
C. Their achievements benefit the air cleaning.
D. They use plants from the ocean in their products.

For many runners, a marathon can often be a challenge—but sometimes what gets a runner through the tough 26.2 miles is looking out into the crowd and seeing his or her loved one holding up a sign and shouting words of encouragement. For one mom, though, her loved one was a bit more hands-on.
While running the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon in Salt Lake City, Courtney Rich, a self-taught baker and mother of two, was beginning to run out of energy just yards from the end when she was suddenly joined by her 10-year-old daughter, Avery.
The touching moment, caught on video and posted on social media, shows Avery running to her mother’s side to support her as she approached the end of the race. Rich’s face lit up when Avery joined her and helped her cross the finish line.
Rich later said in the video’s caption that being joined by her daughter to finish the race was “a moment I hope neither of us ever forget”. Rich said that her daughter could tell she was struggling after a phone call near the end of the race. “She knew I had struggled the last few miles,” Rich said. “She saw tears in my eyes when I called on mile 24.”
In the video, Rich’s facial expression changes from tiredness to a smile after seeing her daughter emerge from the crowd to join her. Then, Rich and her daughter ran hand-in-hand to the finish line. “Nothing could have prepared me for the moment my 10-year-old daughter would jump out of the crowd and run with me to the finish line,” she said. When the race was done, the two hugged each other at the finish line. The video ends with a final caption, “And then she just held me. She held me.”
In the past, the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon has had other memorable moments of mothers caring for their children, but perhaps not as hands-on as this one.
4. What happened to Rich when she was coming to the finish line
A. She felt herself struggling. B. She was far behind others.
C. She fell down all of a sudden. D. She was interrupted by Avery.
5. How did Avery react to the accident
A. She ran the rest in place of Rich. B. She tried to call for help at once.
C. She helped Rich run to the finish line. D. She shouted encouraging words to Rich.
6. How did Rich feel about Avery’s response
A. Doubtful. B. Content. C. Concerned. D. Expected.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. A Daughter Cheered For Her Mother By Joining In Her Race
B. A Mother Encouraged Her Daughter To Pursue Her Dream
C. A Daughter Got Involved In Her Mother’s Race By Mistake
D. A Mother Would Never Give Up On Her Marathon Dream
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. A

Live with roommates Have friends and family around you Chances are that if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.
I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.
Zero waste was a lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.
Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn’t need. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.
As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged.
So here is my advice: Lead by action.
8. What does the underlined phrase “jump on that bandwagon” in the first paragraph mean
A. Join you in what you’re doing. B. Share an apartment with you.
C. Help you to make the decision. D. Transform your way of living.
9. What was the attitude of the author’s father toward buying groceries with jars
A. He was favorable to it. B. He disapproved of it.
C. He was tolerant of it D. He didn’t care about it.
10. What can we infer about the author
A. She is a determined person. B. She respects others’ privacy.
C. She is quite good at cooking. D. She enjoys being a housewife.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. How to have your own personal space at home.
B. How to live in harmony with other family members.
C. How to persuade others through your own actions.
D. How to live a zero waste lifestyle in your household.

Tired of standing in line Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again.
Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to see what you’ve taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some companies are closely copying Amazon’s approach to using AI-powered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve put in them. Customers pay by entering a credit card, or through an online payment system. When a customer exits the store a green light on the shopping cart shows that their order is complete, and they’re charged.
The companies behind the smart carts, including Caper and Veeve, say it’s much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazon’s Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, co-founder of Caper, believes the technology to run Go is too expensive to use in a large-format grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve has said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said, “We’re always happy when Amazon is doing something. They force retailers (零售店) to get out of their old school thinking.”
Each time a business uses AI and cameras, it raises questions about customers’ privacy and the effect on jobs. Beshry notes that the cameras in his shopping cart point down into the cart, so only a customer’s hand and part of their arm will be captured (拍摄) on camera.
12. What do we know about the smart shopping carts
A They are able to recognize goods put in them.
B. They are linked to the cameras fixed in the ceilings.
C. They flash the green light when the order is canceled.
D They can tell customers where to find what they want.
13. What does Beshry think of the technology used in Amazon’s Go stores
A. It is likely to help retailers to think differently.
B. It has attracted many more retailers than before.
C It is far more expensive than their shopping carts.
D. It may reduce the cost of running a store greatly.
14. When it comes to AI and cameras, what makes the public worried most
A. That they can only buy goods online.
B. That goods in the stores may be more expensive.
C. That they have to wait in a line for a longer time.
D. That somebody may know their privacy.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. The new technology improves retail sale.
B. AI-powered cameras are used in retail stores.
C. Artificial intelligence affects the future of job market.
D. Smart shopping carts will let you skip the line.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. D

In a small town, there was a community talent show held every year in the local park. The event was a highlight for many, with performances from various local talents. Among the audience was a woman named Emily, a kind-hearted local librarian, along with her 12-year-old daughter Anna. Both of their eyes were filled with excitement.
As the show began, Emily and her daughter watched a young girl in amazement, about eight, confidently sing a song. Her voice was surprisingly powerful for her small body. Then a group of teenagers followed. Their hip-hop dance routine was full of energy, leading to cheers from the crowd. There was even an elderly gentleman who performed a series of magic tricks. However, as the sun began to set, many in the audience grew tired and the applause (掌声) after each act became less enthusiastic (热情的).
Then came the turn of a young boy, around ten years old, nervously holding his violin. As he started playing, it was clear that he was a beginner. His notes were shaky and he missed a few beats. The audience, already tired, responded with only a little polite applause. Emily noticed the boy’s frustrated face as he finished his performance.
It was at this moment that Emily recalled a powerful memory from her own childhood—the time when she had stood on a similar stage, her voice trembling (颤抖) through a song. But the kindness she had received from a stranger in the audience pushed her to carry on. Drawing from the lesson she had learned from the past experience, Emily stood up, clapping loudly and cheering for the boy. “Great job! Keep practicing, and you’re doing wonderfully!”she called out. Her enthusiasm inspired other members of the audience to join in the applause, their clap growing louder and more sincere.

【答案】范文
Anna looked up at her mother, surprised by her actions. “Mom, why did you do that ”she asked curiously. Emily smiled and said that the boy was brave enough to share his talent with them. She thought it’s important to encourage and support each other, especially when someone is just starting out and that people can never know how much a simple act of kindness can mean to someone. Anna nodded thoughtfully, watching as the young violinist left the stage with a shy but proud smile.
Since that day, Anna carried her mother’s lesson with her. She found herself looking at situations differently, seizing opportunities to offer support and kindness. In school, when classmates struggled or felt nervous, Ann a was there with a word of encouragement, remembering her mother’s example at the talent show. She realized that these small acts of kindness didn’t just help others, and that they made herself feel good too. Anna hoped that just like her mother, she could be a source of initiative and encouragement in someone else’s life.贵阳市白云兴农中学2023-2024学年度第二学期高二期末考试

C. A Daughter Got Involved In Her Mother’s Race By Mistake
D. A Mother Would Never Give Up On Her Marathon Dream
