I soon found that my mother’s words were true. A sailor’s life is indeed a hard life. There was no time for play on board and even in the fairest weather there was much work to be done.
On the very first night the wind began to blow. The waves rolled high. The ship was tossed (颠簸) this way and that. Never had I seen such a storm.
All night long the wind blew. I was so frightened that I thought the ship would surely go to the bottom. Then I remembered my pleasant home and the words of my kind mother. “If I live to reach dry land,” I said to myself, “I will abandon this thought of being a sailor. I will never set my foot in another ship.”
Day came. The storm was worse than before. I felt sure that we were lost. But towards evening the sky began to clear. The wind died away. The waves went down. The storm was over.
The next morning as I stood looking out over the beautiful smooth sea, the first mate came up. “Well, Bob,” he said, “Were you frightened by that little gale (大风) ”
“A little gale ” I said. “Indeed, it was a terrible storm.”
“Do you call that a storm ” he laughed. “Why, it was nothing at all. You are only a fresh-water sailor, Bob. Wait till we have a real storm.”
And so, I soon forgot my fears. Little by little, I gave up all thoughts of going home again. “A sailor’s life for me,” I said.
My first voyage (航海) was not a long one. I visited no new lands, for the ship went only to London. But the things which I saw in that city seemed very wonderful to me.
Nothing would satisfy me but to see the whole world.

Can Seawater Stop Wildfires
Wildfires swept across Los Angeles for weeks several months ago. Firefighters worked around the clock but faced many problems, including a lack of freshwater. About a week after the fires broke out, planes began to drop seawater on them. Many wondered why seawater wasn’t used in the first place since LA is a coastal city. The simple answer is that seawater won’t be used unless everything else has failed. Here is why.

There are two main ways to send seawater to a fire, but both are hard. One way is to pump seawater into water tanks (将海水泵入水箱) and move it into fire trucks. This takes a lot of time and work. The other way is to use helicopters and planes. They must fly close to the ocean to fill their water tanks. This can be dangerous if the waves are rough.
Damage to equipment (损坏设备)
Most firefighting equipment is made from metals (金属), like iron. Seawater can react with these metals and make the equipment rust (生锈的) more quickly. This can cause the equipment to break and even put the firefighters in danger.
Harm to the environment
Seawater can change the soil and harm the ecosystem. Plants get water through their roots (根). Normally, the salt level in the soil is lower than that in plant root cells. This allows water to move from the soil into the roots. However, seawater can add a lot of salt to the soil. When the soil has a higher level of salt than plant root cells, water runs out of the cells instead of into them. Plants will dry out and die as a result. This change in the soil can last for many years.
9.When was seawater used to stop the wildfires in LA
A.As soon as the fires broke out. B.About a week after the fires broke out.
C.One month before the fires were put out. D.About a week before the fires were put out.
10.Which of the following can be put in △
A.Efforts in cleaning seawater B.Difficulty in moving seawater
C.High cost of sending seawater D.Danger of seawater to firefighters
11.What can seawater do to plants
A.Make them get more water. B.Make them grow well.
C.Make them dry out and die. D.Make them change colors.
12.What can we learn from the passage
A.Using seawater is a good way to fight fires. B.Firefighters must say no to seawater.
C.It is cheaper to use freshwater than seawater. D.There’re some risks when using seawater to fight fires.
Painted with cool cultural dots
Every day at work, I drink water from a teapot with dots (小圆点) all over it. But these aren’t just random (随意的) dots. They are part of the aboriginal Australian dot-painting tradition.
The paintings use hundreds of little dots. They come together to make shapes, like animal footprints, the sun or humans. Australia’s aboriginal people don’t have a written language. They paint dots to tell stories about their culture, environment and ancestors (祖先).
But they don’t want outsiders to know their special knowledge about the land. So, they “hide” their stories in dots. It’s like a secret code (代码) that only they can completely understand. For example, the aboriginal people paint lots of water holes with dots. These dot-marked water holes help show where to find water in the hot, dry land. And they paint certain patterns (模式) of dots to mark the migration routes of animals. These marked patterns are used to remember the best times and places to hunt. The colors in the paintings are also very important. For example, red often represents the earth and blood while yellow can be used to stand for the sun.
Dot painting has a very long history in Australian aboriginal groups. For many, many years, older people have passed down the art to younger people. This way, they can keep their culture alive. Now, more and more people around the world know about dot painting. In Australia and other countries, you can see these paintings in art galleries. People from different places can look at these beautiful paintings and learn about the culture of Australian aboriginal people.
I’m not aboriginal, but these paintings hold a special place in my heart. They remind me of home, where I first discovered how art connects us to history and tradition.
13.Why do the aboriginal people use dots in their paintings
A.To sell their paintings for money. B.To share their secrets with outsiders.
C.To keep their special knowledge secretly. D.To make art works look more beautiful.
14.What does the color yellow often stand for in dot painting
A.The sun. B.The earth. C.Water holes. D.Animal footprints.
15.Where can people see dot paintings now
A.Only in Australia. B.In art galleries around the world.
C.In the school libraries. D.Only in the aboriginal communities.
16.What’s the main purpose of the text
A.To encourage more people to buy dot paintings. B.To introduce dot painting in different places.
C.To compare dot painting with modern painting. D.To tell the history and cultural importance of dot painting.
Super Fast Train on Its Way
The world’s fastest high-speed train is on the way.
On December 29, 2024, China brought to light a prototype (样车) of the train. It marks a new era for the country’s high-speed trains.
The newest model is called the CR450. CR stands for China Railway. The CR450 is able to run at 450 kilometers per hour in tests. When it enters service, its speed is expected to reach 400 kilometers per hour. 17 The CR400 came out in 2017. It operates at 350 kilometers per hour.
18 According to its developers, the CR450 offers a quieter ride. The noise levels inside the train have been reduced. Meanwhile, cabin (座舱) spaces have been increased so that passengers can enjoy more comfortable rides.
In addition, the train has shorter braking (刹车) distance. It is also designed with greater stability (稳定性). All this helps to ensure the safety of passengers.
The new train has been tested across several high-speed rail lines in China. 19 Further tests are needed, said the China State Railway Group. All tests are set to be finished within two years.
20 It has built the world’s largest railway network. The network covers almost all corners of the country. High-speed rail has been an effective means of travel for long journeys as it allows people to travel around with ease and comfort.
A.It is not yet put into use, though.
B.The CR450 does well not just in speed.
C.How to reduce the noise of the high-speed train
D.It’s much faster than the CR400 model.
E.China is now the world leader in railway development.

Run Like a Pro (职业运动员)
For many people, running is one of the simplest ways to stay fit. But running can sometimes be dangerous if we do it the wrong way. For your safety, learn these tips (建议) and try to be a good runner!
Take your time
If you develop an interest in running, you may want to run often. However, overdoing it or pushing yourself too hard can cause you to get hurt. It’s also important not to run too fast at the beginning. Run at a pace (步速) that feels comfortable. And if you’re planning on a long run, remember to increase your pace slowly.
Take breaks
Resting is as important as training. Your body needs time to rest after hard runs. Running coach Sam Murphy says that if you run hard one day, you should take a break or do an easier run the next day. Some runners follow the 80/20 plan: 80% of their runs each week are easy, and only 20% are hard.
Have a strong body
According to Runner’s World, strength (力量) training is great for runners. It can help make your body stronger, lower the risk of getting hurt, and even improve your speed. However, this doesn’t mean you need to do heavy weight training. Simple exercise at home, like sit-ups and push-ups, can be good too.
Have a good diet
Eating and drinking the right things is also important. “Many people forget this,” Dr. Paul Hobrough said. “Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in protein (蛋白质), like eggs, chicken and milk. These can help your energy return quickly.”
