A British driver, Billy Monger, was just 17 when he had an accident in a Formula 4 race, losing his legs as a result of the serious injuries. In a second, the teenager was facing a very different future. But Monger, who is now 25, refused to be defeated.
In October last year, Monger broke the world record for the fastest double amputee(被截肢者)to complete an IRONMAN at the World Championship, which is considered as one of the hardest endurance(耐力)events in the world. The athlete, who also works as a racing expert, took on the challenge with the goal of raising money for a non-profit organization which aims to fight global hunger and improve living conditions.
It’s perhaps obvious, when you consider the distances, that this event is not something you can simply walk into unprepared. For Monger, this was the result of a full year of training that taught him to deal with the difficult situation. With the help of expert trainers that become almost part of his close family, Monger trained nearly every day to get his body and mind in the best possible condition.
Being a double amputee, Monger faced a far more challenging preparation than most others. Running, for example, put huge pressure on his broken legs, so it was important that his prosthetics(假肢)fitted perfectly, or pain and soreness could possibly make him give up. Then came the cycle, where Monger decided to ride a pushbike rather than a handbike. It meant the former racing driver had to learn the basics over again.
After his record-breaking achievement, Monger said he has set his sights firmly on the Los Angeles Paralympics in 2028, where he hopes to compete for Great Britain in the para-triathlon. Whatever he does next, though, being a role model and providing support to others will remain Monger’s main goal.
4. What’s Monger’s purpose in joining in the IRONMAN World Championship
A. To collect contributions for a good cause. B. To prove his ability to drive race cars.
C. To prepare for the Paralympics. D. To test his new prosthetic legs.
5. Why was Monger’s training especially difficult
A. His preparations fell short.
B. He had to train alone without any support.
C. He had never done endurance sports before.
D. His prosthetic legs made running and cycling harder.
6 What can be expected of Monger in the future
A. He may leave the sports field completely.
B. He will follow the footsteps of his role models.
C. He will hold on to his dreams while helping others.
D. He hopes to coach those sharing the same experience.
7. Which words can best describe Monger
A. Tough-minded and inspiring. B. Kind-hearted and creative.
C. Lucky and generous. D. Independent and skilled.

Brown bears have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. In their 20s, my parents spent their summers running one of Alaska’s first brown bear viewing camps in the Katmai National Park. Brown bears were respected in our household, and we regarded them as individuals with their own personalities. My parents’ five years as bear guides, in the mid-1980s, took place during a key change in Alaska, where brown bear tourism had previously been hunting.
Biologists were learning to read brown bears’ behavior, challenging longtime ideas that bears were unpredictable (不可预测的). They discovered that if humans behaved equally predictably — by limiting visitors to small guided groups, respecting the bears’ behavior and space, and never feeding the animals human food — the bears could accept the human presence over time. The bear guides learned the lesson the hard way when a door once blew open to a summer house where some fruit had been left on a table. After a bear got in, it ate up everything and sat on the floor for days, wanting more.
The memories that stand out most were the bears’ unbelievable weakness and trust in humans: a female bear chose to nurse its babies in front of my camera; a bear got close to my father and me so it could take a rest beside us in the shade. What I didn’t realize as a child was that such moments could take place only because of how the land was protected and managed.
One of the greatest dangers to brown bears is losing their homes in nature. Around the world, brown bears now live in just 2% of the places they used to live. Almost all of America’s remaining brown bears make their home in Alaska. Katmai’s huge, untouched wilderness is very special — one bear might travel over 50 miles every summer just to find food for winter. It’s hard to understand why protecting this land is so important — until you see a mother bear with her baby with your own eyes.
8. What was the main change in Alaska’s brown bear tourism during the 1980s
A. More people started hunting bears.
B. People preferred guided tours to visiting on their own.
C. Bear viewing took the place of hunting as the main activity.
D. The government prevented humans from getting close to brown bears.
9. How can visitors help make bears’ behavior predictable
A. By directing their own behavior.
B. By teaching the bear guides some lessons.
C. By challenging the bears’ unpredictability.
D. By learning to read brown bears’ behavior.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards brown bears’ present situation
A. Satisfied. B. Worried. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Brown bear tourism history in Alaska.
B. Biologists’ efforts to study bear behavior.
C. Human-bear relationship and brown bear protection.
D. Bear viewing camps in Katmai Park and their popularity.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. C

A new study suggests an asteroid strike (小行星撞击) on the moon billions of years ago left two huge valleys (山谷) about the size of Earth’s Grand Valley. Researchers from the United States and Britain said their research shows the two deep valleys formed apace—the whole process finished within less than 10 minutes. They noted the crash (碰撞) happened near the south pole (极) on the far side of the moon. That is the side of the moon which always faces away from Earth.
The speed of the incoming object was thought to be around 55,000 kilometers per hour. The crash likely took place about 3.8 billion years ago.
The group’s research suggested the asteroid passed over the south pole before hitting. It then created a huge plain area and sent rocky materials at speeds of up to 1 kilometer per second. The researchers said material was sent flying and struck the moon’s surface like missiles (导弹), resulting in the creation of the valleys. The valleys appear comparable in size to the Grand Valley, in the U. S. state of Arizona.
It is thought that the asteroid was 25 kilometers across. The researchers guessed that the energy needed to create the two valleys would have been more than 130 times greater than the power of all the world’s current nuclear weapons (核武器)。
As broken pieces from the crash were thrown out from the moon’s south pole, ancient rocks in the polar area would be at or close to the surface. This makes it easier for astronauts to collect them. The researchers said those rocks can help scientists get a better understanding of the moon’s history.
The researchers noted it is not yet clear whether the two huge valleys are always shadowed like some of the valleys at the moon’s south pole. That is something that researchers are clearly going to reexamine.
12. What does the underlined word “space” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Strangely. B. Perfectly. C. Recently. D. Quickly.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The size of the asteroid that hit the moon.
B. The process of how the valleys on the moon were formed.
C. The speed of the incoming object that crashed on the moon.
D. The comparison between the moon’s valleys and other valleys.
14. Why are nuclear weapons mentioned
A. To explain how they work.
B. To show how dangerous asteroid strikes can be.
C. To warn that they should be managed properly.
D. To suggest that asteroids could be used as weapons in space.
15. What role do the ancient rocks in the polar area of the moon play
A. They prove there are huge valleys on the moon.
B. They tell the location of the asteroid strike on the moon.
C. They stress the influence of the asteroid strike on the moon.
D. They enable researchers to learn more about the moon.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. D

Some days it seems nearly impossible to find even half an hour for a workout. ___16___ This means that if you manage to get three 10-minute exercise periods, you greatly reduce the possibility of developing serious health problems later in life. So it’s truly worth scheduling these short movement breaks into your day.
One simple way to exercise is by walking every day. You can walk your dog. If you usually just let your dog out a few times a day, turn one of those outings into a proper walk with it. Gradually, you’ll notice that your 10-minute walk might become a 20-or 30-minute one on some days. ___17___
For those who are used to running, it’s quite convenient to break into a jog whenever and wherever you are, as long as you have comfortable shoes on. ___18___ So after this quick exercise, you can smoothly return to work or go on with whatever activity you were busy with before.
___19___ Choose three songs that always get you active. Since most songs last between 3 — 4minutes, three of them provide the perfect time for a short workout. Just move to the rhythm (韵律) of these songs in any way that feels right to you. This can even be done in the comfort of your own home.
Doing housework can also be a form of exercise. Ten minutes spent sweeping leaves or cutting unwanted branches in your yard are part of your daily chores. If you complete these tasks every day for a week, you will get some exercise. ___20___ These activities all count as 10 minutes of movement, contributing to your overall daily exercise goals.
A. Joining a group is necessary.
B. The first thing to prepare is a pair of sports shoes.
C. Another enjoyable way to exercise is through music.
D. However, the benefits of exercise are widely recognized.
E. Besides, you’ll also save some money on keeping your yard orderly.
F. If you don’t have such an animal friend, force yourself to take a daily walk at a specific time.
G. Jogging for 10 minutes won’t make you overly sweaty or mess your hair due to the short time.
【答案】16. D 17. F 18. G 19. C 20. E

【答案】
Recently, more and more high schools have adopted a two-day weekend policy. From my perspective, this is a positive move. It gives us students much-needed rest, allowing us to recharge and better engage in study during the week.
However, to make the most of these weekends, I suggest we plan ahead. We can set aside some time for self-study and review, and also schedule activities we enjoy, like reading or doing physical exercise. This way, we can balance relaxation and learning.
All in all, the new policy offers great potential for us to grow both academically and personally.
第二节(满分25分)

On a cool day recently, police officer Wright went on his regular patrol (巡逻) through a peaceful countryside, wooded area. The sun shone through the leaves, casting broken shadows on the narrow road. As he drove along, his eyes looking quickly around the surroundings, he suddenly discovered a dog sitting alone in the middle of the road. It was an old-looking dog, with a dirty coat and a tired expression.
The area was hardly populated, with no houses in sight. Concerned for the dog’s safety, Wright pulled over. He thought it would be best to take the dog with him and try to find its owner. Getting close to the dog gently, he spoke in a soft voice, “Come on, baby. Let’s get you out of here and find your home.” He opened the car door, hoping the dog would climb in. But to his astonishment, the dog refused to move. It just sat there, looking at him with an intense gaze (凝视), as if trying to say something important. Wright didn’t understand it. A dog in the middle of an empty road, refusing help — it was a strange situation.
Since he had pressing duties to attend to — protecting the people and property of the area, Wright couldn’t spend too much time on this one matter. He decided to leave the dog for the time being and continue his patrol. But as he drove away, he couldn’t shake the image of the dog from his mind. He kept thinking about what could have happened to make the dog act so strangely.
After checking several nearby houses and finding nothing uncommon, Wright’s curiosity got the better of him. He returned to the exact place where he had first seen the dog. To his great surprise, the dog, which he later learned was named Gita, was still sitting right in the middle of the road. This time, when he tried to touch it, Gita jumped up and started running onto an unmarked, little-used road.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
Sensing that there was something wrong, Wright decided to follow. Gita moved surprisingly fast for its age, leading the officer down the overgrown path. Wright had to push through bushes and step carefully over tree roots to keep up. As they went deeper into the woods, Gita occasionally looked back to make sure Wright was still following. The officer noticed the dog’s breathing was heavy, but it never slowed down. When they reached a small stream, Gita rushed straight through the shallow water without hesitation. Wright, now completely convinced this wasn’t just a random walk, followed closely behind, until they came to a summer house.
Finally, Wright found the truth — an old man lying on the ground near the summer house. The man, pale and weak, could barely lift his hand to wave for help. Wright immediately called for an ambulance while checking the man’s condition. Gita rushed to its owner’s side, licking his face anxiously. The man whispered that he had fallen hours before while collecting firewood and couldn’t get up. Without Gita’s persistence in seeking help, the situation could have turned tragic. This heartwarming rescue shows how deep the bond between humans and animals can be. In our busy lives, we often overlook these loyal companions, but they never stop watching over us, proving that sometimes the purest form of love comes on four legs.安徽卓越县中联盟&皖豫名校联盟2024—2025学年高一(下)期中检测

C

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
