Dear Peter,
Hearing you are going to a Chinese friend’s birthday party, I have some advice for you.
Firstly, you should give him some gifts that he might like, depending on his hobbies. Then he will
appreciate your gifts. If you don't know him very well, give him some practical gifts like books and
dictionaries. They will be used for a long period of time and your friend will remember you for it, which will
deepen your friendship. Besides, don't forget that you must arrive on time. Being late is not a sign of
politeness for a birthday party.
I hope my advice is useful to you. Have a great time at this party!
Yours,
Li Hua

Gradually,Emily’s confidence grew with Mr Jenkins’ help. She started approaching math problems with
a new-found enthusiasm. Instead of seeing them as insurmountable obstacles, she began to view them as
challenges to be conquered. Every day after school, she would meet Mr Jenkins, and they would work
through problems together. As she understood more and more concepts, her grades started to improve. She
even found herself enjoying the process of solving math problems, just like she enjoyed painting.
Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. She nervously opened the report card, not knowing
what to expect. To her surprise and delight, she saw a significant improvement in her math grade. She
couldn’t believe it. She immediately ran to Mr Jenkins to thank him. He smiled and said,“You did all the
hard work. I just showed you the way.” Emily realized that with determination and the right guidance, she
could overcome any obstacle. From then on,she knew that she could achieve anything she set her mind to.

第一节
Text 1
W: How are things going at the new school
M: I'm a little homesick. I miss my parents.
W: I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you should write to your parents more often.
M: Yes. I suppose you're right.
Text 2
W: Barry, don't feel so bad. It's not your fault that your brother failed the class.
M: I don't know. I could have encouraged him to study more.
Text 3
M: Oh, I'm sorry. I just realized that I forgot to bring the tape recorder you lent me. I left it in my dormitory.
W: That's all right. I won't need it until tonight.
Text 4
M: You're joining us for dinner tonight, aren't you
W: Oh, I'm really sorry, but I will have a Chinese test tomorrow and I need all the time I can get to prepare.
Text 5
M: I'm no expert, but that noise in your fridge doesn't sound good. Maybe you should call and have it checked out.
W: You're right, I'll do that right away.
第二节
Text 6
W: I'm worried about Tony. He didn't come home after school in the afternoon.
M: He called me this morning to say that he was staying at his friend Simon's house this afternoon.
W: Where is Tom now It's almost 5:00 p.m.
M: He's at Rhonda's party, remember He said he would be home later in the evening. Stop worrying so much. Our sons are
nearly adults. They'll both graduate next year.
Text 7
W: Do you like jazz music
M: No, rock music is my favorite because I can sing along to it. Jazz music is too wild for me.
W: That's exactly why I like it. It makes you follow along with your mind and you really have to listen. It's not like pop
music on the radio. It's boring and so similar to every other pop song.
M: I have never thought about it that way. When I'm driving, I want to pay attention to the road. I don't have to think about
the music. I like classical music for that reason, too, and it has no lyrics.
Text 8
M: Could I borrow some money, Wendy
W: How much do you need, Chris
M: Well, I only have 50 yuan, but I need 100 yuan for my dog.
W: Oh, no! What happened to Pookie
M: He ran away. We're not sure where he went, but he was very sick when we found him. Now the vet says he needs some
special medicine; otherwise he will die.
W: I'm sorry to hear that. I wish I could help, but I've only got 25 yuan. Why not ask Stan
M: I feel bad. He always helps us out. Is it OK to ask him again
W: I think so. He earns more than us, and he doesn't have children.
M: True. And he likes helping people. I still feel embarrassed to ask, though.
W: Think of Pookie!
Text 9
M: This suitcase is too full! Can you help me get all these things in it
W: I can, but should I Do you really need all this You come to Dallas all the time.
M: But this was special. I want to keep these souvenirs to remember our holiday.
W: OK, you can keep the souvenirs and the clothes. But what about all these papers Do you really need them
M: I do. Those are important numbers that Bill gave me at dinner last night.
W: Just take pictures of them with your phone and then you won't need to carry them. You can save them to your computer
when we get home.
M: Good idea.
W: Is that why Jim invited us to dinner To let Bill give all this information
M: Yes, and he wanted us to meet Julie. She wants to work for us when she graduates.
