Many of us have heard of Alex Honnold, who made history in 2018 when he became the first man to climb EI Captain without ropes or safety equipment. But his mother, Dierdre Wolownick, just became the oldest woman to conquer the famous peak: she reached the top on September 23 — the morning of her 70th birthday.
Dierdre, the writer and language teacher, decided to take up climbing as a means to connect more with her son. In 2008, accompanied by her son Alex, she visited a climbing gym and completed 12 routes that first day with his help, but it was months before she worked up the courage to return and practice on her own.
Dierdre became committed to the sport, and began to meet friends and sharpen her skills. She scaled (登上) parts of Half Dome and Cathedral peak at a time when many people at her age are thinking about retirement and slowing down. The writer would go on to publish a book about her climbing experiences with Alex called The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story.
"As a mother, I am impressed by this role exchange process. Parents and children often wind up changing roles in life as they get older," she writes in her book. "But never, I thought, is that transformation as obvious as when they climb together."
On September 23, Dierdre and her friends set out in the dark, at 6 am. The route is steep (陡峭的) enough to require all-fours, grabbing rocks and trees and whatever else will hold the weight. Yet despite all the difficulties the team made it to the top."It was really inspiring to watch her and then to have her on top with all of us," said one of Dierdre's friends."There was a special look on everyone's face. We knew where we were. We knew how amazing the moment truly was.
4.Why did Dierdre start climbing mountains
A. To know her son better.
B. To celebrate her birthday.
C. To seek writing inspiration.
D. To set an example for the old.
5.Which of the following best describes Dierdre

6.What does the last paragraph tell us about Dierdre's climbing journey
A. It was worth the effort.
B. It took days to complete.
C. It was arranged on her own.
D. It required special equipment.
7.What may be a suitable title for the text
A. Mountain climbing benefits health
B. Mother goes beyond her son's wish
C. Climb together, bond closer
D. Slow down, better your life

Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain operations and defeat master chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. After many failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake, although the outcome is unlikely to trouble the world's dessert masters.
In the latest experiment, researchers tried various cheesecake designs. In early attempts, which involved simply adding ingredients one by one, the team found that the cake quickly turned into a mixture. Through trial and error, they discovered that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients, while triangular (三角的) biscuit supports on the inside were necessary to keep the cake from falling apart. "To print the cake successfully, we need to put the ingredients together in a careful way," said the team leader Cooper.
Although much work is still needed to collect data and improve the designs, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace traditional cooking, allowing food to be adapted to different nutritional(营养)needs. "We have a huge problem with the low nutrition of processed foods," said Cooper. "3D food printing will still produce processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, a better control of nutrition based on personalized needs."
The team said 3D printing could also allow chefs to create entirely new food experiences, with flavours and textures (质地) placed very precisely. "It is particularly practical for the plant-based meat market, where texture and flavour need to be carefully designed to taste like real meats," said Cooper. And, with more concern about food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of food-related illness and the spread of disease. According to Cooper, this seems like a win-win solution for all of us.
8.Why does the author mention robots in paragraph 1
A. To show the disadvantages of 3D printing.
B. To introduce the popularity of using robots.
C. To stress the difficulty of 3D printing desserts.
D. To explain the function of robots in different areas.
9.What is the key to the success of the 3D printed cheesecake
A. The thickness of biscuit walls. B. The flexibility of inside support.
C. The unique taste of ingredients. D. The structural design of the cake.
10.What do the underlined words "the silver lining" in paragraph 3 mean
A. The side effect. B. The main reason.
C. The positive aspect. D. The best solution.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning 3D printed food
A. Promising markets. B. Additional benefits.
C. Practical concerns. D. Technical challenges.

E-bikes are becoming more and more popular. It opens cycling to older people, those with disabilities, people who live in hilly cities where regular cycling requires serious effort.
Three things are needed to make e-bikes popular—a safe place to ride, good affordable bikes and a secure place to park. Safety comes first. For bike lanes (车道) to work, the network has to be continuous, not just forcing cyclists into the middle of a busy street. It should be well protected so that the cyclists won't feel they'll be knocked down by cars. It's necessary to provide good affordable e-bikes to customers either in physical stores or in online stores. Only in this way can people consider buying one as their means of transportation. Parking remains an avoidable problem if we want to encourage more people to ride e-bikes. In the Netherlands or Copenhagen, large bike parking lots at train and bus stations encourage a variety of transport. People can easily find bike parking everywhere. This is going to be needed in other cities too for e-bikes to really become a form of transportation.
As a matter of fact, people have found that e-bikes are effective transportation choices. A recent study shows that people who ride e-bikes increase their travel distance by 2. 1 to 9. 2 km per day on average. That is sure to do good for their health. It's also believed that if just 15% of a city's population turned to e-bikes, it would reduce the carbon emissions (排放) from transportation by 12%.
All of these lead me to conclude that e-bikes are a far better way of dealing with transportation emissions than electric cars. They won't work for everyone, but they don't have to.
12.What is the most important for cyclists
A.Their safety. B.Affordable bikes.
C.Good parking lot. D.Fast transportation.
13.Why are the Netherlands and Copenhagen mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.To show their good e-bikes.
B.To show their e-bikes are affordable.
C.To show cyclists have safe places to ride.
D.To show they offer good bike parking lots.
14.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3
A.The rules of riding bicycles. B.The advantages of riding bicycles.
C.The health benefits of riding bicycles. D.The harmful influence of riding bicycles.
15.What is the author's attitude towards e-bikes
A.Worried. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem—inability (没能力)to read.
In the library, I found my way into the "Children's Room". I pulled a few books off the shelf and sat down on the floor. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was the one I could share secrets with, but later he was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my dog.
On the book's cover, there was a dog which looked the same as mine. I figured the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the little, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty and got the main ideas of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It was until then that I realized I had begun to overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed myself in the real scene.

My mother's call brought me back to the real world and I suddenly realized something. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. From then on, I kept going to the library. In the library, I was exposed to different types of books: detective stories, love stories, poems and so on. My mother encouraged me to spend time doing my favorite thing. Day by day, I finally succeeded in overcoming my inability to read. Moreover, I began to write some stories. When I went to university, I chose literature as my major.
Last year, my mother was so proud that her son was awarded a PhD in literature. I never told my mother about my experience that summer. It was the very first book that made me who I am today. This year, I began writing my first book on the topic of my dog. I hope writing could be my lifelong career.
