Maria Branyas Morera lives in Spain and celebrated her 117th birthday on Monday. She was very grateful for the received congratulations and the interest that so many people have shown in her state of health.
Surviving two world wars, Maria now has 11 grandchildren. Since January 2023 she holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest person on the planet. Last year she explained the lifestyle reasons behind her old age: “Good connection with family and friends, contact with nature, keeping positive and staying away from bad people.”
Maria has agreed to take part in scientific testing so researchers can discover the secrets to her long life. They have taken samples (样本) of her saliva (唾液), blood and urine (尿液) and will compare this to her 80-year-old daughter. Maria’s health has baffled many and scientist Manel Esteller said: “It’s still a mystery. She has a completely clear mind. She remembers impressive events from when she was only four years old, and she does not present any disease common in elderly people. There might be a genetic reason because many of her family members are over the age of 90.”
Maria was born in San Francisco in 1907, but later moved to Barcelona with her mom and sister, after her dad died. During the Spanish civil war, she worked as a nurse alongside her doctor husband Joan Moret, with whom she had three children. Since 2000, she has lived in a nursing home in Catalonia.
Maria has competition from another woman, Trinh Thi Khong. Trinh Thi Khong lives in Vietnam and she has birth documents that show she was born in 1905. Efforts are making from her family to get her recognized as the world’s oldest person because she is two years older than Maria. The only person to have reached past the age of 120 is French citizen Jeanne Calment, who lived for 122 years and 164 days before her death in 1997.
4. Which of the following contributes to her long life according to Maria
A. Genetic reason. B. A healthy, balanced diet.
C. A good relationship with family. D. A positive attitude to strange people.
5. What does the underlined word “baffled” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Puzzled. B. Worried C. Frightened D. Excited.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. Maria’s family history B. Maria’s life experience.
C. Maria’s achievements. D. Maria’s characteristics.
7. What do we know about Trinh Thi Khong
A. She has a big family. B. She is healthier than Maria.
C. She is probably older than Maria. D. She holds the record for the oldest person.

While work on lab-grown meat has made the headlines in recent years, similar work on fruit is less common. Scientists at Plant & Food Research in New Zealand are aiming to change that by growing fruit tissue (组织) from plant cell that they hope will one day taste, smell and feel like real fruit. Researchers hope that the program will help guarantee the country’s food security.
“Here in New Zealand we’re good at growing traditional gardening crops,” said Dr. Ben Schon, the lead scientist for the food by Design program at the government-backed Plant Food Research, “but looking into the future, there’s a lot of change coming in the world with population growth, increasing urbanization (城市化) and climate change.”
The program aims to grow fruit tissue without the parts that are usually discarded like the peel of the banana. Providing consumers with only the tissue of fruit will help reduce food waste, said Schon.
Lab-grown food could play an important role in sustainable agriculture but are still in the very early stages of development, according to Dr. Ali Rashidinejad, a senior food scientist at Massey University in Palmerston North. Since lab-grown food is a completely new idea, once it is developed, it will then have to prove its safety through long expensive experiments. The Plant & Food Research program started 18 months ago, but scientists warn that the end goal of getting something that is nutritional and enjoyable to eat is some years away and might not be achievable at all.
The technology would probably be suitable for growing fruit tissue within cities, said Dr. Sam Baldwin, a strategy leader at Plant & Food Research, in the hope that it would reduce the cost and carbon emissions created when transporting food into urban centers.
8. What is the purpose of the program
A To raise concern. B. To balance diet.
C. To ensure food safety. D. To promote well-being.
9. Which aspect of lab-grown fruit did Dr. Ben Schon talk about
A. The necessity of growing the fruit. B. The process of designing the program.
C. The plans for developing the fruit. D. The problems with experimenting on the fruit.
10. What is the scientists’ concern about the program
A. Its difficult research process. B. Its uncertain research result.
C. Its short research period. D. Its expensive research facilities.

In a small town in Thailand, there lived a 14-year-old girl named Nisa. She was born with a physical disability that left her with a limp (跛行), but she had a heart full of love and filial piety (孝心)。
Nisa’s life had been filled with challenges from the start. She was born with a physical disability. To make matters worse, Nisa’s mother passed away when she was young, leaving her and her father to depend on each other. Her father had worked tirelessly ever since, taking on multiple jobs to make ends meet and provide for Nisa. He had been her rock, always there to support and encourage her, despite the difficulties they faced. However, her father suddenly fell seriously ill. The medical expenses were like a huge mountain that the family could not afford. Now, with him lying sick in bed, Nisa felt a deep sense of responsibility to step up and help.
One day, she heard about a local marathon that offered a significant cash prize to the winners. She was filled with a mixture of hope and fear. As a disabled girl, she wondered if she could succeed. The possibilities of failing and getting hurt made her anxious. However, when she saw her sick father, she recalled the care he had given her. She said to herself, “I must try, for him I can face any odds.” Thus, with firm resolve, she readied for the challenge.
On the day of the marathon, Nisa showed up at the starting line with her crutches (拐杖). People around her were surprised, but she was determined. As the race began, she moved forward slowly but steadily. Along the way, many people cheered for her and offered her water and words of encouragement. Nisa felt the warmth and kindness from strangers. However, the rough road made it hard for her to maintain balance with her crutches. Her legs and arms quickly became tired. Then, Nisa thought of giving up. Her legs were trembling, and her arms felt like they were on fire. The pain was unbearable, and the finish line seemed impossibly far away. She paused for a moment, gasping for breath, and looked around. The cheers of the crowd echoed in her ears, and she remembered her father’s face — his unwavering support and love. “I can’t let him down,” she whispered to herself. With renewed determination, she gripped her crutches tighter and pushed forward, one step at a time. Though her pace was slow, her spirit was unyielding. She refused to give up, no matter how hard it was.
Nisa didn’t win the first prize, but her story caught local charities’ attention. Her courage and determination inspired many, and soon, donations began pouring in to help her father’s medical expenses. A local news station featured her journey, and people from all over the town came forward to offer support. Nisa’s act of love and sacrifice touched hearts, and she became a symbol of resilience. Though she didn’t cross the finish line first, she won something far greater — the admiration and help of her community. Her father, though still weak, smiled proudly, knowing his daughter’s bravery had brought them hope.
