With a birthday usually comes a party, as well as a cake, presents and wishes from friends. But beyond these, what does a birthday mean
One year, I spent my birthday by myself in a completely new place. Calls and messages poured in as usual. However, I was not certain about what to do. I had nowhere to go; I didn’t know anyone to share the joy of the event with, either.
At that moment, my mother called me, asking, “What are you planning for your birthday ”
“I’m not sure, Mum. There’s no one here. I’m so far from home.…” Although my voice sounded so weak, I could still hear its tremble clearly in the empty, quiet room. “You don’t always need a lot of people for your birthday. Just follow your heart and make this day yours.” What Mum said made me less unhappy.
Then I picked up a book and lost myself in it, with music on. I did as my mother had told me and enjoyed “my own day”. But unexpectedly, this solitary day became a bridge—connecting me with my inner self. It was a peaceful but satisfying day. I realized my growth for the first time—from a preschool (学龄前的) child who shared birthday chocolate with the class to someone who could now celebrate alone.
When I lay in bed that night, I remembered my mother’s words, “You came into our lives this day. We are thankful for it.” And indeed, that is the true meaning of birthday celebrations—the valuable gift of life itself. From the moment we are born, every day is a new chance to learn, to love, and to enjoy the world around us.
6. How might the writer feel at first on his birthday
A. Excited and full of plans. B. Lost and a bit lonely.
C. Calm and ready to explore. D. Worried and hoping for friends.

8. How did the writer get connected with his inner self
A. By replying to messages and preparing a party. B. By sharing birthday chocolate with the class.
C. By talking with his mother on the phone. D. By reading a book and listening to music.
9. Which of the following made the writer realize the true meaning of a birthday
A. His mother’s words. B. An educational book.
C. A piece of music. D. His preschool memory.
10. What does the writer mainly want to tell us
A. Sharing happiness can make us feel much happier.
B. Our parents love us from the bottom of their hearts.
C. Birthdays remind us to value our life and each day.
D. Being alone on our birthday makes it meaningless.

The webcam of your computer is very useful. We can use it to take pictures, take videos, scan (扫描) documents and have online meetings. But sometimes, you may want to cover it if you work remotely (远程地). You would like to cover it when you want to avoid showing your surroundings in an online meeting. In fact, it takes less than a minute to cover your webcam and protect your privacy.
Hide your webcam with tape for a quick cover. You can stick a piece of tape over your webcam. The tape provides a good barrier (障碍) between you and your camera. You should choose black or brown tape instead of clear tape. If the tape is clear, it may not block everything in your room or workspace.
Place a cute sticker over your webcam. You can search online or in a craft store for some cute stickers. You can choose a sticker with a cute design. Place it on your webcam as a cute, protective cover. Leave the sticker in place as long as needed.
Block off your camera with a square webcam cover. You can find some webcam covers in online shops. It is easy to place and remove, as it’s made out of a material that suctions (吸附) to your computer rather than sticks with adhesive (黏合剂). After buying a cover, you can place it over your camera so that nobody can see you or your surroundings completely. If you need to use your webcam, you can remove it easily.
There might be some other ways or tools to cover the webcam of your computer. Think it over and see whether you can come up with some new smart ways.

Firstly, the companion robot might be very expensive. I think my parents can’t afford to buy one. Secondly, the robot can’t look after me like a real person. If I fall ill, the robot can’t take care of me like my mother. Thirdly, the robot can’t work all the time. Sometimes it needs to be charged. It will lose its value if it has no power or battery.
In all, I prefer to stay alone rather than stay with a companion robot if my parents are not at home.
